If File Explorer closes, restarts, or freezes when you try to share a file in Windows 11, first install available Windows updates and restart. If it still happens, determine whether Explorer itself is failing or whether the sharing setup or transfer is failing. For persistent Explorer problems, Microsoft’s documented system-file repair sequence is DISM followed by SFC; it is not a guaranteed fix for a sharing-menu crash.
First identify what is crashing
Note exactly when the problem occurs. Does File Explorer close, restart, or stop responding as soon as you select Share? Or does the sharing interface open, with the failure occurring later during setup or transfer? Those are different symptoms and may involve different sharing routes.
Also identify what you are trying to do: share a folder with another PC on your local network, send a file with Nearby sharing, create a cloud link, or open the app chooser from File Explorer’s Share command. Microsoft documents these as separate sharing paths; its support pages do not establish one specific cause or universal fix for Explorer crashing when sharing.
Install Windows updates and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart the PC, then try the same sharing action again.
Microsoft’s general File Explorer troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for updates and restarting as initial recovery steps. It addresses Explorer that will not open or start, rather than identifying a specific sharing-triggered crash.

If you are sharing over a local network
Network sharing configuration can prevent another PC from finding or accessing a shared file, but that is different from File Explorer closing or becoming unresponsive. If Explorer stays open and the issue is access or discovery, check the setup:
- Make sure both PCs are connected to the same network and are as up to date as possible.
- If you open Network in File Explorer and Windows says network discovery is turned off, enable network discovery and file sharing as prompted.

Try another sharing route as a diagnostic
If Explorer remains usable, try another documented entry point, such as the Share command from a different File Explorer location or its context menu. If the result changes, that may help narrow down which action triggers the problem. Microsoft documents both entry points, but does not say that switching routes repairs a crash.
You can also distinguish local-network sharing from Nearby sharing. Nearby sharing is a separate feature; Microsoft’s Nearby sharing troubleshooting page lists Windows 10/11 support and Bluetooth 4.0 or later with Low Energy support among its requirements. Check that page for current requirements and troubleshooting steps. A Nearby sharing transfer problem does not, by itself, establish why Explorer crashed.

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
If Explorer remains unreliable and Windows system-file damage is plausible, Microsoft recommends running DISM first and then System File Checker. These commands address Windows image and system-file issues; Microsoft does not identify them as a targeted repair for a sharing-menu defect.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Run
sfc /scannow. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100% and completes. - Restart Windows and test File Explorer again.
Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions if you need the full procedure or encounter an error.

If File Explorer still crashes
If Explorer remains unreliable after these steps, consult Microsoft’s File Explorer recovery guidance and report the issue through Feedback Hub. That general guidance includes more consequential recovery options, including resetting Windows; do not treat a reset as a routine first step, and protect important files with a backup before considering it.
If you need to move one file while diagnosing the problem, a USB flash drive can bypass the sharing action. That is only a transfer workaround, not a repair for File Explorer.
