Start with an untouched, working copy of the current GOG edition of Clive Barker’s Undying. Launch it once, quit normally, and keep that folder as your rollback point. Then choose one display path: edit User.ini and configure the bundled nGlide wrapper for a light-touch widescreen change, install the ModDB Widescreen + High Resolutions patch for broader resolution support, or install Undying Renewal for widescreen, 4K output, subtitles, controller support and other modern-game fixes. Add only one rendering layer at a time. That order is the most reliable way to avoid black screens, distorted images, crashes and controller conflicts on Windows 10 and 11.
What causes Undying problems on modern Windows?
Undying was released for PC in 2001. Its original Glide and Direct3D paths, fixed-era display assumptions and legacy input handling do not map cleanly to current graphics drivers, ultrawide monitors or high-DPI Windows desktops. A modern wrapper can translate the old renderer, but stacking several wrappers or changing files before you know the clean game works makes diagnosis difficult.
The practical rule is to change one layer at a time. First prove that the unmodified game launches. Next try the smallest display change. Only then move to a widescreen patch, dgVoodoo2, Vulkan or Renewal. If a change causes a black screen or crash, you can return to the untouched folder instead of guessing which file is responsible.
1. Establish a clean baseline before editing anything
Install the current GOG edition
The current Windows troubleshooting guide (published October 17, 2026) identifies the GOG edition as the simplest modern Windows starting point. It is listed for Windows 10 and newer, marked Windows 11 verified, DRM-free and usable offline without Galaxy. Install it to a location you can easily open, such as a dedicated games folder rather than a protected Windows directory.

Launch once and preserve the untouched folder
- Open the installation folder and locate the executable and the
Systemsubfolder. - Start the game without installing a patch, wrapper or launcher replacement.
- Reach the main menu, then quit normally. This confirms that the base files, permissions and first-run configuration are usable.
- Close the game and copy the entire installation folder to a backup location. Label it as the clean baseline.
Do not overwrite this copy while experimenting. The sequence matters: establish a clean, working base installation first, then add Renewal or another modification. If the modified copy stops launching, testing the clean copy immediately tells you whether the problem is the game installation or the added rendering layer.
2. The light-touch fix: User.ini plus nGlide
Use this route when the game already launches and you want widescreen framing with the fewest file changes. PC Gamer’s 2013 instructions describe the bundled nGlide configurator in the game’s System folder as the easiest high-resolution route.
Set a widescreen field of view
- Open the Undying installation folder.
- Open
System. - Make a backup copy of
User.ini. - Open
User.iniin a plain-text editor. - Find the field-of-view setting. The original default is 90; PC Gamer recommends approximately 100 or 105 for widescreen.
- Save the file without changing its extension or adding rich-text formatting.
A wider monitor shows more of the horizontal scene, so leaving the original 90-degree value can make the view feel excessively narrow. Use 100 first, then 105 if the image still feels cramped. These are practical recommendations, not a universal calibration: ultrawide aspect ratios and personal comfort can require a different value.

- Remain in the
Systemfolder and open the bundled nGlide configurator. - Select a resolution that your monitor and Windows display mode support.
- Apply the setting and close the configurator.
- Launch Undying and test a menu, a saved game and a new area before making any further change.
In PC Gamer’s testing, 1440p was the highest nGlide mode reported without crashes; resolutions above 1440p crashed in that test. Treat that as a test-specific limit, not a promise about every graphics card or wrapper version. If 4K is your goal, use the patch or Renewal route rather than assuming nGlide will be stable at 3840×2160.

When to stop using this route
If the game displays correctly but the picture is stretched, capped at the wrong size or unstable above 1440p, do not add additional wrappers on top of nGlide. Restore the backup of User.ini, return nGlide to a standard supported mode and move to the dedicated widescreen patch or Renewal. Keeping one renderer active makes the next test meaningful.
3. Widescreen and high resolutions with the ModDB patch
The ModDB Widescreen + High Resolutions project is the broader display-only option. Its Widescreen Patch 1.2 file is identified as a full version updated October 26, 2020. It adds widescreen support, high-resolution modes, additional resolutions in the video menu and a journal fix.
Install the patch
- Download the Widescreen + High Resolutions archive from the project’s ModDB file page.
- Make a backup of the clean GOG folder before extracting anything.
- Extract the archive directly into the Undying installation folder, alongside the existing game files and the
Systemdirectory. - Allow the archive’s files to merge with the game directory when Windows asks.
- Launch the game and check the video menu before changing wrapper settings.
The supplied system.ini selects Glide and high video settings by default. The patch calculates field of view from the current resolution, so its instructions say not to alter that FOV value. This differs from the light-touch nGlide method: do not carry a manual widescreen FOV edit into the patch unless you are deliberately undoing the patch’s calculation.

For additional modes, open dgVoodooCpl from the installed files and configure the wrapper there. The project specifically points to dgVoodooCpl for resolutions above 1080p. Select a mode that Windows and the monitor actually expose; an entry in a configuration list cannot make a display accept an unsupported refresh rate or timing.

If Glide produces a black screen, corruption or an immediate crash, select the Direct3D renderer in the patch’s configuration instead. Test that renderer by itself before introducing another wrapper. A 2022 GOG Community report describes one 2560×1440 setup using dgVoodoo with 2048 MB of video memory, 16× anisotropic filtering and 8× MSAA, and recommends selecting the DirectX 3D driver instead of nGlide. Those are community settings for one setup, not requirements for every computer; begin with conservative defaults and add filtering or anti-aliasing only after the game is stable.
4. The broader modernization route: Undying Renewal
Choose Renewal when you want more than a resolution change. The current Windows guide presents it as adding widescreen and 4K output, subtitles, controller support, faster loading, restored content and modern rendering.
Install Renewal over the clean GOG copy
- Keep the untouched baseline folder available.
- Download the current English Renewal archive from its ModDB project page.
- Extract the archive directly into the folder containing the GOG installation. Do not place it in a new nested folder unless the archive’s own structure requires that.
- Open the installed
UndyingLauncher. - Run the launcher once. The first run patches the game.
- Start Undying through
UndyingLauncherfor subsequent tests.
Do not combine Renewal with the separate Widescreen Patch or another full wrapper on the first attempt. Renewal already changes the rendering and launcher path. If it works, add no second display layer merely because another guide lists one. If it fails, return to the clean copy and test one documented alternative renderer, such as dgVoodoo2 or Vulkan, from Renewal’s configuration.

5. Fix a controller that Undying does not recognize
Controller failures are often caused by launch order or competing input devices rather than by the gamepad itself. Use a single wired USB/XInput controller for the first test; wireless adapters, remappers and virtual devices add variables that can be reintroduced later.

Prepare Windows before launching
- Connect one controller directly to the PC.
- Before opening Undying, verify in Windows that the device is detected and its buttons or axes respond.
- Disconnect extra controllers, steering wheels, flight sticks and virtual input devices temporarily.
- Close any input-remapping utility that creates a second virtual controller.
Refresh the launcher’s device list
If you connected the controller after UndyingLauncher opened, close the launcher completely and reopen it. The troubleshooting guide specifically calls out this launch-order issue. Start the game through the reopened launcher, then use the keyboard and mouse to confirm that controller support is enabled in the launcher or game configuration before testing buttons.
Interpret the result
- Windows does not see the controller: fix the USB connection, device mode or Windows driver first; Undying cannot receive input that the operating system does not expose.
- Windows sees it, but the launcher does not: close and reopen
UndyingLauncherwith the controller already connected, then retest with other input devices disconnected. - The launcher sees it, but the game does not: confirm that controller support is enabled, launch through the correct launcher, and test the clean baseline or Renewal separately rather than layering another input tool.
- Buttons work but the layout is wrong: check whether the controller is presenting an XInput or another device mode. Change only that mode, then repeat the one-controller test.
Renewal is the route in the supplied Windows guide that explicitly lists controller support. The original nGlide and Widescreen Patch procedures are display changes; they should not be assumed to add controller handling.

Return to a known renderer
- Quit Undying and restore the clean GOG copy, or restore the backed-up configuration files in the modified copy.
- Launch the unmodified game at a standard resolution.
- If the clean game works, reapply only the chosen patch or Renewal archive.
- Use the default renderer first. If the display fails, switch to one alternative—dgVoodoo2 or Vulkan in Renewal, or Direct3D instead of Glide in the Widescreen Patch.
- Test again before changing resolution, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering or Windows scaling.
This isolates the rendering layer. A black screen after several wrappers are installed cannot tell you which wrapper failed.
Check display modes and Windows scaling
- Set Windows to a monitor mode that the display reports as supported.
- Begin with a standard 16:9 mode before trying 2560×1440, ultrawide formats or 4K.
- Check Windows display scaling if menus or the launcher are clipped; scaling changes the desktop and launcher presentation, but it does not create a new in-game resolution.
- If the image is stretched, confirm that the game is using the intended aspect-ratio-aware patch or Renewal configuration rather than the unmodified renderer at a forced widescreen size.
- If the picture is capped at an unexpected size, remove conflicting wrapper settings and select the mode in the active configurator only.
There is no authoritative benchmark establishing a universal frame rate or a guaranteed fix for every Windows 11 hardware configuration. Treat each resolution and renderer combination as a compatibility test on your own monitor and graphics driver.

7. Crashes that follow sound settings
PC Gamer reported that some modern-hardware crashes, particularly with Nvidia graphics, may be related to sound configuration. The reported workaround is in System.ini under the GalaxyAudio section.
- Back up
System.ini. - Open it in a plain-text editor.
- Find the
[GalaxyAudio]section. - Set the two values exactly as follows:
UseDirectSound=False
Use3dHardware=True- Save the file and test the same scene that previously crashed.
- If there is no improvement, revert the two values and retest the clean baseline before adding another modification.
This is a source-reported workaround, not a guaranteed fix. Do not combine it with several renderer changes in the same test, or you will not know whether sound or graphics caused the improvement.
8. A disciplined troubleshooting order
Use this decision sequence whenever a change fails:

- Does a standard resolution work? If not, keep the original renderer and investigate the installation, permissions or driver environment.
- Did the failure begin after nGlide, the Widescreen Patch or Renewal? Remove that one change and retest; do not install another patch over it.
- Is the problem limited to high resolutions? Return to a standard mode, then try the next mode supported by the monitor. PC Gamer’s nGlide test reached 1440p but crashed above it.
- Is the screen black or corrupted? Restore the original renderer, then try one documented alternative: Direct3D for the Widescreen Patch, or dgVoodoo2/Vulkan for Renewal.
- Is only the controller failing? Test Windows detection, one connected device and a freshly reopened launcher before changing graphics files.
- Do crashes follow audio changes? Test the
GalaxyAudioworkaround independently, then revert it if it does not help.
9. Choosing the right fix
- Choose User.ini plus nGlide when the base game is stable and you want the smallest possible change. It is easy to undo, but PC Gamer’s reported nGlide testing makes 1440p the sensible upper starting point.
- Choose Widescreen Patch 1.2 when you want widescreen, additional video-menu modes and high-resolution configuration without the broader Renewal feature set. Let the patch calculate FOV and use dgVoodooCpl for modes above 1080p.
- Choose Renewal when you need 4K output, subtitles, controller support, faster loading, restored content and modern rendering. Install it into a clean GOG copy and always launch through
UndyingLauncher.
For any route, keep the clean folder. It is the fastest way to prove whether a later problem comes from the game itself, a wrapper, a launcher or a display mode.
