If Wi-Fi, video, or sound stopped working immediately after a Linux 7.3 upgrade, first boot the previous kernel and test the same hardware. If the older kernel works, you have strong evidence of a kernel, firmware, or out-of-tree-driver regression; if it fails there too, the upgrade may only have exposed a separate configuration or hardware problem. Keep Linux 7.3 installed while you collect logs, identify the exact device and driver, and compare both kernels.

“Linux 7.3” normally means the upstream kernel release. Distributions can ship a differently patched or packaged build, so verify the kernel actually running on your machine before using release-specific advice. Mainline 7.3 was released on October 18, 2026, while the 7.2 stable series included 7.2.11 on October 15; your distribution may use another versioning scheme.

1. Confirm what was upgraded before changing anything

A symptom that appears after a reboot is not proof that the kernel caused it. A distribution update can change firmware, a desktop session, PipeWire or PulseAudio, a display manager, or a proprietary module at the same time. Establish the exact before-and-after state first.

Check the running kernel and distribution

Open a terminal and record the output of:

uname -r
cat /etc/os-release

Write down the computer model, the distribution and release, and whether the first failure followed a kernel update, a firmware update, a full distribution upgrade, or a desktop or audio-stack change. The version from uname -r, not the version shown in a downloaded package name, is the build that is currently controlling the hardware.

Identify the physical devices and bound drivers

For internal PCI or PCIe hardware, run:

lspci -k

For USB Wi-Fi adapters, USB sound cards, webcams, or other external devices, run:

lsusb

In the lspci -k output, find the Wi-Fi controller, GPU, and audio controller. Record the vendor and device IDs and the lines named Kernel driver in use and Kernel modules. A missing Kernel driver in use line is materially different from a device that has a driver but cannot connect or produce sound.

Preserve the first useful kernel messages

Inspect messages from the current boot:

journalctl -k -b

Search the output for the device or subsystem that failed. Useful terms include firmware, iwlwifi, amdgpu, nouveau, nvidia, snd, and sof. Save the relevant lines to a text file or copy them into your support report. Do not install a driver updater or replace a package before you have this baseline; doing so can erase the evidence that distinguishes a kernel problem from a configuration problem.

2. Prove or disprove a kernel regression

The fastest safe test is a controlled comparison with the last kernel that worked. Reboot and open the bootloader’s advanced-options menu. Select the previous kernel, let the same desktop load, and test the same Wi-Fi network, display, or audio output without changing any settings.

Result of comparison What it establishes Next move
Previous kernel works; 7.3 fails A regression in the kernel, firmware interaction, or an external module is plausible. Keep both kernels, save logs from both boots, and identify the first known-good and first known-bad versions.
Both kernels fail in the same way Timing alone does not establish that 7.3 caused the issue. Investigate radio state, cabling, profiles, services, firmware, and hardware independently of the kernel comparison.
7.3 works after a cold boot but not after a warm reboot Power-management, device-reset, firmware, or platform-firmware behavior may be involved. Record the reboot sequence and compare kernel messages from each boot type before changing drivers.

Use the old kernel as a recovery path, not as a reason to delete the new one immediately. A working older boot lets you read logs, install matching headers or firmware, and report the issue while the failing version remains available for repeatable testing.

3. Fix Wi-Fi by checking each layer in order

Wi-Fi failures after an upgrade usually fall into four separate layers: the radio is blocked, the device or driver is not bound, required firmware is missing or rejected, or the network service is running but cannot associate. Check them in that order. A password reset or a generic “driver update” cannot fix a radio that the kernel has not initialized.

Check airplane mode and hardware radio switches

Run:

rfkill list

Look at both Soft blocked and Hard blocked. A soft block can normally be cleared with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo rfkill unblock wifi

Run rfkill list again. If the device remains hard-blocked, use the laptop’s physical wireless switch or function key and check the firmware setup; a software command cannot override a hardware kill switch. Once the radio is unblocked, verify that NetworkManager or your distribution’s network service shows a Wi-Fi interface.

Confirm that the adapter has a driver

For an internal adapter, inspect its entry in lspci -k; for a USB adapter, match its ID in lsusb and inspect the corresponding kernel messages. The important distinction is:

  • Device absent: the bus, firmware settings, physical connection, or hardware may be at fault.
  • Device present with no “Kernel driver in use”: investigate module availability, driver binding, and firmware before touching NetworkManager profiles.
  • Device present with a bound driver: continue to firmware, service, and association checks.

Do not choose a driver by brand name alone. Chipset and revision determine which kernel module and firmware files are valid, and two adapters sold under similar names can require different packages.

Read firmware and microcode errors

Filter the current boot’s kernel log for firmware-related messages and the chipset’s module name:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
journalctl -k -b | grep -Ei 'firmware|iwlwifi|wifi|wlan'

Messages about a missing, rejected, or incompatible firmware file point to a chipset-specific firmware package, not to a universal updater. Use the package name and installation method documented by your distribution. If the previous kernel works with the same firmware, compare the two kernels’ messages before replacing files; a new kernel can expose a driver-firmware compatibility issue that an older one did not.

Separate association from an actual driver failure

If an interface exists and the radio is unblocked, check whether the distribution’s network service lists nearby networks and whether only one access point fails. A single-network failure can be an access-point, security-mode, or saved-profile issue. Failure to create an interface at all is still a kernel, module, or firmware problem. Record whether the failure is “no adapter,” “no networks,” “authentication fails,” or “connected with no traffic”; those are different fault domains.

Test power-management behavior without making a permanent change

Some Wi-Fi modules behave differently after suspend or under aggressive power saving. Reproduce the problem from a fresh boot and after resume, and note the difference in the log. If the adapter works under the previous kernel but not 7.3, test with distribution-supported power-management settings only after collecting the default behavior. A regression report should include the exact chipset ID, both kernel versions, firmware messages, and whether suspend or a cold boot changes the result.

4. Diagnose graphics at the layer where it fails

“Graphics are broken” can mean a black screen before login, a desktop that starts at the wrong resolution, missing 3D acceleration, or one application that renders incorrectly. These symptoms do not share one fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Observed symptom Likely layer Evidence to collect
Black screen, blinking cursor, or graphical login never appears Kernel mode-setting, display manager, or a failed GPU module uname -r, GPU entry from lspci -k, dkms status, and boot or display-manager logs
Desktop appears but resolution or monitor detection is wrong Mode-setting, monitor detection, cable, or session configuration Connected outputs, selected mode, and kernel messages mentioning the GPU
Desktop works but 3D applications fall back to software rendering Acceleration stack or userspace driver Active kernel module and the application’s rendering diagnostic
Only one application flickers or crashes Application or userspace rendering path Application logs and whether other 3D programs behave normally

Check the module actually loaded

Inspect the GPU’s driver binding in lspci -k, then review the boot log for amdgpu, nouveau, or nvidia messages. For systems using a proprietary or other out-of-tree module, run:

dkms status

A module built for an older kernel may be present on disk but absent from the running kernel. That produces a graphical login failure even though the GPU itself is detected.

Match headers to the running 7.3 kernel

DKMS must compile against headers that exactly match the running kernel’s release string. Use your distribution’s package manager to install the header or kernel-development package corresponding to the output of uname -r, then rebuild the affected DKMS module using the distribution’s documented DKMS procedure. Do not assume headers for a nearby 7.2 build are sufficient.

After the rebuild, reboot and verify the module in lspci -k and dkms status. If the distribution has not yet published matching headers, boot the previous kernel for normal work and wait for the packaged header and module update rather than forcing an unrelated build.

Avoid unmanaged vendor installers

When your distribution provides packaged graphics drivers, prefer those packages. A vendor .run installer can place files outside the package manager and leave you responsible for rebuilding the module after every kernel update. If such an installer is already present and the old kernel still starts the desktop, record its version and DKMS state before attempting removal or replacement.

Recover from a failed graphical session

Boot the previous working kernel from the advanced-options menu. From that session, collect the GPU model, uname -r for both kernels, dkms status, and display-manager errors. A blinking cursor after a full upgrade is especially consistent with a missing header or failed DKMS build, but the log—not the symptom alone—should determine the repair.

5. Separate audio detection from audio routing

Audio troubleshooting becomes much shorter when you first ask whether ALSA detects a card. Run:

aplay -l
arecord -l

No card is listed

If neither command lists the expected controller, stay at the kernel and firmware layer. Inspect journalctl -k -b for snd, codec, and sof messages. Compare the same commands under the previous kernel. A card that disappears only on 7.3 suggests a kernel, codec, or firmware regression; changing the desktop volume slider cannot restore a device that ALSA does not see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A card is listed but there is no sound

A detected card with silence is commonly a PipeWire or PulseAudio routing, profile, port, mixer, or mute-state problem. In the desktop sound panel:

  1. Choose the intended output device rather than leaving an old HDMI, DisplayPort, Bluetooth, or USB output selected.
  2. Choose the profile that matches the hardware, such as internal speakers, analog headphones, or HDMI/DisplayPort.
  3. Select the correct port; speakers and headphones can appear as separate ports under one card.
  4. Clear application and system mute states and raise the output level.
  5. Test again with a simple system sound before judging a particular application.

HDMI and DisplayPort audio are especially easy to misdiagnose because the monitor’s audio profile can be selected while the internal speakers remain muted or disconnected. If ALSA detection is unchanged between kernels but the selected output or profile changed, focus on the audio-session configuration rather than reinstalling the kernel.

Compare the same profile under the old kernel

Boot the previous kernel and repeat aplay -l, arecord -l, and the sound-panel checks. If the card list changes, preserve the logs for a kernel or firmware report. If the card list and mixer state are identical but the desktop still routes audio incorrectly, investigate the PipeWire or PulseAudio session and its profile selection.

6. Roll back safely without losing the evidence

Use the previous kernel whenever it still boots and provides working hardware. This is both a recovery method and a controlled experiment. Leave 7.3 installed while you gather the first bad boot’s logs; removing it makes later comparison and reporting harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Restart and open the bootloader’s advanced-options entry.
  2. Select the last kernel known to work.
  3. Reproduce the exact Wi-Fi, graphics, or audio test you performed on 7.3.
  4. Save the old-kernel and 7.3 outputs of uname -r, lspci -k, relevant journalctl -k -b lines, and subsystem-specific commands.
  5. Use the older kernel for normal work while checking for distribution firmware, header, or driver updates.

Do not make the older kernel the permanent default or remove 7.3 until you know whether an update has fixed the issue and you have retained the failing version’s evidence. If 7.3 prevents normal recovery, use the working kernel or a distribution recovery environment to copy logs before repairing packages.

7. Report a reproducible regression

Kernel documentation defines a regression this way: “It’s a regression if something running fine with one Linux kernel works worse or not at all with a newer version.” Your report should demonstrate that pattern rather than relying on timing alone.

Include these details

  • Distribution name, release, and exact kernel strings from uname -r.
  • Computer model and the precise PCI or USB ID of the affected device.
  • The active driver, module, and firmware package version when available.
  • The first known-good kernel and first known-bad kernel.
  • A short reproduction sequence, such as cold boot, resume, connecting to a named network, opening the desktop, or selecting an HDMI profile.
  • Relevant journalctl -k -b lines and the output of lspci -k, lsusb, rfkill list, aplay -l, arecord -l, or dkms status, as applicable.

Send that evidence to the distribution’s bug tracker or the upstream driver project that owns the failing subsystem. State whether the previous kernel still works, and avoid claiming that the upgrade caused the failure if both kernels show the same behavior.

8. A compact decision checklist

  • Nothing appears in hardware listings: check physical connection, firmware setup, and bus detection.
  • Hardware appears but no driver is bound: investigate the kernel module, matching firmware, and (for graphics) DKMS and headers.
  • Wi-Fi interface exists but cannot connect: check rfkill, the network service, saved profiles, and firmware messages.
  • GPU is detected but the desktop will not start: compare kernels and inspect DKMS, display-manager, and mode-setting logs.
  • ALSA lists the sound card but you hear nothing: select the correct PipeWire or PulseAudio output, profile, port, and mute state.
  • The old kernel works: retain both versions, capture the difference, and report a possible regression instead of immediately replacing hardware.
