If a router’s MAC address filter blocks your device, compare the router’s allowed list with the Wi-Fi MAC address your device is currently using for that network. Add that address to the allowlist and reconnect. If the address changes, use a fixed private address for that network when available; turning off private addressing is a fallback because it reduces privacy protection.

Why MAC filtering can block a device

A router using an allowlist may reject a device whose Wi-Fi MAC address is not on the list. In NETGEAR’s documented “Block all new devices from connecting” mode, for example, a new device must be added to the allowed list before it can connect. Other routers use different labels and rules. NETGEAR’s access-control guide illustrates the concept.

The address a device presents to a Wi-Fi network may be a private or randomized address rather than its hardware MAC address. It can also differ from the address used on another network or by the device’s Ethernet interface. For Wi-Fi filtering, use the address shown for the affected Wi-Fi network on the device—not an Ethernet address or an address copied from another network.

Fix the router’s allowlist mismatch

  1. Confirm the failure. Note whether the device cannot join the Wi-Fi network, or joins but cannot reach local resources or the internet. On Apple devices, install current software and retry before switching off Private Wi-Fi Address, as Apple’s guidance recommends.
  2. Check the router’s filtering mode. Sign in to the router’s administration interface and look for Access Control, MAC Filtering, an allowlist or whitelist, or a blocklist or denylist. Determine whether new devices are blocked unless explicitly allowed. The exact menu and behavior depend on router model and firmware.
  3. Find the address used for the affected network. Use the device-specific instructions below. If the device shows a private or randomized address, that is generally the address to match against the router entry.
  4. Add that Wi-Fi address to the router’s allowed list. Save or apply the change using the router maker’s instructions, then reconnect the device. Do not enter its Ethernet MAC in place of its Wi-Fi address.
  5. Check the match after reconnecting. Verify that the current Wi-Fi address still matches the saved router entry. If the connection still fails, confirm the router change was saved and check other possible causes, such as an incorrect Wi-Fi password, a stale entry, or a separate router policy.

Find the current Wi-Fi address on your device

iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi, then open the details for the affected network. Check the Private Wi-Fi Address setting and the Wi-Fi address displayed there. Apple’s controls and labels depend on the device’s software version; consult Apple’s current instructions for the applicable steps.

Android

Open the saved Wi-Fi network’s details and look for its Privacy or MAC address type setting. The exact location and wording vary by Android version and device maker. ASUS, for example, documents opening the network’s gear menu and selecting Device MAC as one option; that path is not universal. See ASUS’s instructions.

Windows

Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, and inspect Random hardware addresses and the network’s properties. Microsoft documents controls for both all Wi-Fi networks and an individual known network in its Windows Wi-Fi instructions. Menu names can vary by Windows release.

When to change the device’s address setting

First try allowing the current private or randomized address on the router. If the router’s rules or a changing address make that impractical, use the least disruptive device setting that solves the problem. Where available, prefer a stable private address for this network over switching to the hardware address.

Choice What it does Trade-off
Update the router allowlist Allows the address currently used by the device’s Wi-Fi connection. Best when the address is stable; check again if the device later changes it.
Keep a fixed private address for this network Preserves a private address for that network instead of rotating it, where the operating system offers this control. Maintains the private-address approach while giving the router a consistent value to allow.
Turn off random/private addressing for this network Uses the hardware MAC on current Apple releases; other devices may offer a Device MAC option. Reduces privacy protection for that network. Use only if the other approaches do not work or a managed network requires it.

Apple address modes

On supported Apple releases, the choices include Off, Fixed, and Rotating. Fixed retains a private address for that network; Off uses the hardware address. On the release families described by Apple, Rotating changes the private address every two weeks. Apple’s instructions also note that, for older release families listed in its guide, a device that has not joined a network in six weeks uses a different private address the next time it joins. These behaviors depend on software version and network conditions, so check Apple’s version-specific guidance.

Android address behavior

Android behavior depends on version, device maker, and the network’s randomization mode. Android documentation describes persistent randomized addresses associated with network profiles and, on some networks with Android 12 or later, non-persistent behavior that can regenerate at connection time under specified conditions. Check the actual address in the network details rather than assuming it is the same as the hardware address or one used on another network. See the Android MAC randomization behavior documentation.

Windows address controls

Windows provides random hardware address controls for Wi-Fi generally and for selected known networks. If the router depends on a consistent address, inspect the setting for that specific network and use Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows version.

Why preserving a private address is usually preferable

Private and randomized addresses make it harder to associate a device with activity across networks using its MAC address alone. The Internet Engineering Task Force explains that randomization reduces the ability to build a persistent association between packet flows and a device, assuming no other unique identifiers or stable patterns are visible (RFC 9797, section 1). Randomization can also disrupt network services that assume a persistent address.

MAC filtering is an address-matching access-control feature, not strong proof of a user’s identity. A router rule can be useful for managing connections, but matching a MAC address should not be treated as robust authentication.

If the device still cannot connect

  • Recheck that the allowlist entry matches the address currently shown for the affected Wi-Fi network.
  • Confirm that the router’s access-control change was saved and that the rule is an allow rule, not a block rule.
  • Check the Wi-Fi password and any other router restrictions that might independently prevent access.
  • If a private address changes, check the network details again and update the allowlist or choose a stable private address for that network if supported.
  • Some router features—including device blocking, bindings, schedules, or content filters—may also rely on MAC addresses. ASUS notes that randomization can affect such features; TP-Link notes that randomized devices may appear as unknown and can be renamed in its interface. See ASUS’s guide and TP-Link’s guide.

Router menus and operating-system controls vary by model, firmware, release, and manufacturer. If the labels above do not match your screens, use the current instructions for your exact router and device.
