If an AI agent’s website screenshot shows fallback typography, wait for the target content and then for the browser’s used fonts to finish loading before capturing. In Playwright, the key step is await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready). If the screenshot call itself hangs while waiting for fonts, diagnose that separately: skipping the wait may isolate the stall, but it does not make the fonts correct.

Wait for the page content, then wait for used fonts

Navigation completing does not necessarily mean the page’s typography is ready. Wait for the content or element you intend to capture, then wait for the browser’s font set. The browser’s document.fonts.ready promise fulfills after loading and layout operations for fonts used by the document are complete. See MDN’s Document.fonts reference.

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('#capture-target').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });

Replace #capture-target with a selector for an element that matters on your page; it is an example placeholder, not a universal selector. If your agent uses a different automation framework, use its equivalent content-visible wait and evaluate the page’s document.fonts.ready promise before taking the screenshot.

Check the intended face when typography must be exact

Font readiness is not proof that every font declared in CSS loaded, or that the preferred family and weight won the CSS cascade. The set of fonts considered used can differ from all declared fonts, including when font-display: optional is involved. If exact typography matters, inspect document.fonts and the relevant face’s status, then verify the affected element is using the expected family and weight. A fulfilled readiness promise alone cannot establish that.

Why network idle is not a font-readiness substitute

Navigation lifecycle states and font readiness are separate signals. A page may still need a content-specific wait and the font-set promise even after navigation reaches a lifecycle state. Playwright discourages using networkidle as a general readiness condition for tests; prefer assertions about the page state you actually need. See the Playwright Page API.

For screenshot automation, the useful sequence is therefore: wait for navigation to the point your workflow needs, wait for the capture target or relevant content, wait for used-font loading and layout, and then capture. Network quiet by itself does not verify that the expected font is being rendered.

If Playwright hangs waiting for fonts

A completed navigation and a stalled screenshot call are different problems from a screenshot that simply captured fallback typography. First identify where the operation stops and whether it is the automation framework’s built-in screenshot font wait. An open Playwright issue #42986, opened September 29, 2026, reports a timeout on a public ArcGIS Hub page in a Linux WebKit 26.6 run under Playwright 1.63.0. The reporter says a Playwright 1.60.0 control completed, but intermediate versions were not bisected and the cause is not established. This is a bounded report, not evidence that all Playwright screenshots or WebKit versions hang.

Use the bypass only to isolate the blocked wait

A Midscene integration guide documents PW_TEST_SCREENSHOT_NO_FONTS_READY=1 as a way to skip Playwright’s built-in screenshot font wait when font resources stall. The reporter in issue #42986 says it allowed one screenshot to complete, but a subsequent normal capture timed out. Treat this as a diagnostic bypass, not a font fix: a screenshot that completes after skipping the safeguard may still show the wrong typography and may not be valid for visual comparison.

Use the environment variable for a diagnostic run of your test command, then remove it when checking the normal capture path. If the bypassed screenshot still has incorrect typography, inspect the actual font face and its delivery on the affected page and browser/container. Confirm the expected family and weight are declared and used, check the relevant face’s loading or error state, and determine whether that environment can retrieve the font resource. The issue report mentions an Avenir Next face in an error state; it does not establish a universal cause or repair.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely distinction to check Next step
Screenshot completes, but text uses a fallback font The capture may have happened before used fonts and layout settled, or the expected face may not be the one actually used. Wait for the target, await document.fonts.ready, then inspect the expected face and computed typography.
Screenshot call times out at “waiting for fonts to load” The framework’s screenshot readiness wait may be stalled, rather than the capture merely occurring too early. Reproduce in the same browser and environment; use the documented bypass only to isolate that wait, and do not treat its output as proof of correct typography.
Font readiness resolves, but the screenshot still looks wrong Readiness concerns used fonts; it does not prove every declared face loaded or that the intended family and weight won. Inspect the affected element’s actual typography and the relevant face’s status and delivery.

Make repeated captures more stable

Once font handling is correct, control other visual changes that can make screenshots differ. Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result, and their animation option can disable CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations. These measures help stabilize an image; they do not validate the font family or weight. Details are in the Playwright PageAssertions API.

If you need an API-based capture instead of maintaining browser automation, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot with one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. These are capture and billing features, not a guarantee that a site’s preferred font has loaded; verify the returned image when exact typography matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does `document.fonts.ready` prove that the preferred font loaded?

No. It signals that loading and layout for the document’s used fonts are complete; inspect the relevant face and element when the exact family and weight matter.

Will setting `PW_TEST_SCREENSHOT_NO_FONTS_READY=1` fix a wrong-font screenshot?

No. It skips Playwright’s built-in screenshot font wait for diagnosis; the resulting image can still have incorrect typography.
