WebGPU failures on an M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5 Mac are easiest to fix when you identify which initialization stage failed: browser exposure, adapter selection, device creation, canvas configuration or pipeline creation. Start with a secure origin and a current browser, then test a minimal call to navigator.gpu.requestAdapter(). In Chrome, inspect chrome://gpu; in Safari, check the release’s WebGPU setting and compare the same page in current Chrome. A null adapter, a lost device and a shader validation error require different remedies.
Understand the WebGPU initialization sequence
WebGPU is not a single switch. An application normally proceeds through these stages:
| Stage | Typical code | What failure means |
|---|---|---|
| Browser API exposure | navigator.gpu |
The browser, page origin or release does not expose WebGPU. |
| Adapter selection | await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter() |
No suitable GPU adapter was offered, or the request was too restrictive. |
| Device creation | await adapter.requestDevice() |
Requested features or limits cannot be provided, or the GPU process failed. |
| Canvas setup | context.configure({ device, format }) |
The context, format, device or canvas dimensions are invalid. |
| Pipeline and commands | device.createRenderPipeline(...) |
Shader, layout, resource-usage or validation errors occur after initialization. |
Log each stage separately. A browser crash can hide the original error, so reproduce with the smallest page that performs only the stage under investigation.

Use a supported, current browser
Chrome documents WebGPU support on macOS beginning with Chrome 113. A current release is preferable because WebGPU and GPU-process fixes continue to land. Safari support is release-sensitive; some versions expose WebGPU only through an experimental setting, while later releases may change that behavior.

WebGPU is restricted to secure contexts. Serve production pages over HTTPS. For local development, http://localhost is treated as a secure development origin; an arbitrary LAN address or plain HTTP hostname may not be. Open the exact URL you are testing and verify that the page is not embedded in an insecure frame.
Confirm that the page can see the API
if (!window.isSecureContext) {
throw new Error('WebGPU requires HTTPS or http://localhost');
}
if (!('gpu' in navigator)) {
throw new Error('WebGPU is unavailable in this browser or context');
}
console.log('WebGPU API exposed');
If this test fails, do not debug shaders yet. Update the browser, switch to a browser with documented support, correct the origin, and retest with a minimal sample.
Enable hardware acceleration in Chrome
Chrome recommends enabling Use graphics acceleration when available in Settings. After changing it, relaunch Chrome. An application can still load with software rendering, but performance and feature availability may differ, and some WebGPU paths will be blocked.

Record these details for every reproduction:
- Mac model and Apple chip generation (for example, M2 Max or M3 Pro).
- macOS version and build.
- Browser name, complete version and whether it is a stable, beta or preview release.
- The page origin, including whether it is HTTPS, localhost or another HTTP host.
- The exact console message, JavaScript stack and the first WebGPU call that fails.
- Whether the same minimal page works in another browser on the same Mac.
This information distinguishes an application bug from a browser-specific GPU regression. It also prevents a browser update or restart from erasing the evidence you need.
When navigator.gpu is undefined
An absent navigator.gpu means initialization has not reached adapter selection. The usual causes are an unsupported or outdated browser, an insecure context, a disabled experimental implementation, or a page running in a context where WebGPU is unavailable.

- Open the page over HTTPS or on
http://localhost. - Test the feature-detection snippet above in the page’s own console.
- Update Chrome or Safari to a current release and restart it.
- In Safari releases that expose the control, turn on Develop > Experimental Features > WebGPU, then reload the page. WebKit’s demonstration specifically documented Safari Technology Preview 92 or later for that workflow; current releases may differ.
- Run an unmodified minimal WebGPU sample. If it works, add your application code back one subsystem at a time.
Do not “fix” this state by suppressing the feature check. Code that assumes WebGPU exists will fail later with less useful messages.
When requestAdapter() returns null
The WebGPU specification allows requestAdapter() to resolve to null when no appropriate adapter is available. MDN identifies this as the expected result when the browser cannot provide an adapter, not as a JavaScript exception.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with an unconstrained request
const adapter = await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter();
if (!adapter) {
throw new Error('No suitable WebGPU adapter was found');
}
console.log('Adapter selected');
If this succeeds, add application requirements incrementally. A request can become unsatisfiable when it specifies an unnecessary powerPreference, a feature the adapter does not expose, or limits beyond the adapter’s capabilities.
Remove constraints one at a time
- Temporarily omit
powerPreference. Let the browser choose an available adapter before deciding whether a preference is important. - Request no optional features initially. Inspect
adapter.featuresand request only features your application truly needs. - Do not copy limits from another machine. Compare your requested limits with
adapter.limitsand lower them to the reported values. - Retest on the same origin after each change so a context problem is not mistaken for a hardware limitation.
Check platform and blocklist conditions
GPU blocklists, a disabled graphics stack, or a failed GPU process can leave the browser without a usable adapter even when the Mac has a capable integrated GPU. Chrome’s GPU diagnostics reveal these conditions; Safari generally offers less public detail, so cross-browser testing is especially valuable.
Chrome diagnostics: read chrome://gpu
Enter chrome://gpu in the address bar in the same Chrome profile that runs your application. Look for:

- WebGPU: Hardware accelerated, which indicates that Chrome is using a hardware path rather than a software fallback.
- Blocklist or disabled-feature notices that explain why acceleration was restricted.
- GPU-process crash messages or repeated resets.
- The reported graphics backend and driver information, which help correlate a failure with a macOS or Chrome update.
Hardware acceleration is not proof that every WebGPU feature will work, but a software-only status is a strong reason to resolve the graphics configuration before changing application code. Chrome notes that a repeatedly crashed GPU process may require reloading the page or restarting Chrome. Close other GPU-heavy tabs, relaunch Chrome, and reproduce with only the minimal sample open.
If acceleration remains blocked after a restart, update macOS and Chrome, check managed-device policies, and test a fresh browser profile. Avoid treating a browser reinstall as a guaranteed fix; the diagnostic status should tell you whether the underlying problem changed.
Request the device once, then handle device loss
After obtaining an adapter, request one device for that adapter and attach a loss handler immediately. Devices can be lost for transient reasons such as browser resource management or a driver update. MDN recommends observing device.lost and creating a replacement when the loss was not intentional.
async function createGpuContext() {
const adapter = await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter();
if (!adapter) throw new Error('No WebGPU adapter');
const device = await adapter.requestDevice();
device.lost.then(async (info) => {
console.error('WebGPU device lost:', info.reason, info.message);
if (info.reason === 'destroyed') return; // intentional shutdown
// Recreate the device and every resource that belongs to it.
// Prevent multiple recovery loops if several components report loss.
await rebuildWebGpuResources();
});
device.addEventListener('uncapturederror', (event) => {
console.error('Uncaptured WebGPU error:', event.error);
});
return { adapter, device };
}
A replacement device does not preserve buffers, textures, bind groups, shader modules or pipelines from the old device. Recreate all of them, reconfigure the canvas, and restart your render loop. Keep recovery idempotent so concurrent loss notifications do not create several devices and competing loops.
If requestDevice() rejects immediately, remove optional features and excessive limits just as you did for adapter selection. If the browser crashes before a promise settles, inspect the browser’s GPU diagnostics and test the smallest possible device request.

Configure the canvas only after device creation
Canvas setup must use the device that will submit commands. A typical sequence is:
const canvas = document.querySelector('canvas');
const context = canvas.getContext('webgpu');
if (!context) throw new Error('WebGPU canvas context unavailable');
const format = navigator.gpu.getPreferredCanvasFormat();
context.configure({
device,
format,
alphaMode: 'premultiplied'
});
Common configuration failures come from using a device that was lost, passing a context from a different canvas, configuring before the device promise resolves, or supplying a format that the implementation does not support. After device recovery, call configure() again with the new device before obtaining a new texture view.
Resize handling also matters. Set the canvas’s drawing-buffer width and height from the display size and device-pixel ratio, then reconfigure or recreate size-dependent resources as your rendering design requires. A zero-sized canvas is not normally a browser initialization failure, but it can make a successful renderer appear blank.
Pipeline creation errors and apparent crashes
Once the adapter, device and canvas work, failures usually move into shader or pipeline validation. Check shader-language syntax, bind-group layouts, vertex formats, texture usage flags and pipeline compatibility. Wrap validation-sensitive operations in error scopes so the message is associated with the call that caused it.
device.pushErrorScope('validation');
let pipeline;
try {
pipeline = device.createRenderPipeline({
layout: 'auto',
vertex: {
module: shaderModule,
entryPoint: 'vsMain'
},
fragment: {
module: shaderModule,
entryPoint: 'fsMain',
targets: [{ format }]
},
primitive: { topology: 'triangle-list' }
});
} finally {
const error = await device.popErrorScope();
if (error) console.error('Pipeline validation:', error.message);
}
An error scope turns a vague “pipeline failed” report into a validation message. Keep the scope close to the operation under test; a scope opened too early can collect unrelated errors.

A real Safari-versus-Chrome example
A WebKit report recorded pipeline-creation failures in Safari 26.6 on macOS 26.5 with an Apple M3 Max, while the same application worked in Chrome. The issue was later marked fixed. This demonstrates why a browser comparison is diagnostic evidence, not proof that your shader is wrong or that Apple Silicon is unsupported. Record the exact versions when reporting such a discrepancy.

Check whether WebGPU is enabled in that Safari release
Safari’s WebGPU behavior changes with Safari and macOS releases. When the release exposes the control, show the Develop menu in Safari’s settings and enable Develop > Experimental Features > WebGPU. WebKit’s historical demo required Safari Technology Preview 92 or later; that requirement should not be generalized to every current release.
After changing the setting, reload the page and rerun the minimal feature check. If Safari still fails, test the same URL in a current Chrome build on the same Mac. A working Chrome result narrows the issue to WebKit behavior, Safari configuration or a Safari-specific regression.

Use the event listener for uncaptured errors
Safari compatibility is not uniform for the convenience property GPUDevice.onuncapturederror. WebKit bug 323544 reports that Safari 26.6 on an Apple M2 Max lacked that handler attribute, while addEventListener('uncapturederror', ...) worked. Prefer the event-listener form and retain error scopes:
device.addEventListener('uncapturederror', (event) => {
console.error(event.error.name, event.error.message);
});
device.pushErrorScope('out-of-memory');
// Perform the allocation or operation being tested.
const error = await device.popErrorScope();
if (error) console.error(error.message);
Do not assume that the presence of the property is a reliable feature test across Safari versions.
Update macOS and Safari after graphics failures
Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guidance places keeping macOS and Safari current among the first remedies for misbehavior. Install updates, restart Safari, and retry before drawing conclusions from a GPU-process crash. An update can change WebGPU implementation behavior, so include the new version in your reproduction record.
Safari and Chrome: what to compare
| Diagnostic axis | Chrome on macOS | Safari on macOS |
|---|---|---|
| WebGPU enablement | Chrome documents support from version 113 on macOS; current releases are recommended. | Availability and experimental controls vary by Safari release; check the Develop menu when present. |
| Secure context | Requires HTTPS or http://localhost. |
Use the same secure-origin requirement and test the identical URL. |
| Adapter selection | Start with an unconstrained request and inspect failures alongside chrome://gpu. |
Use the same unconstrained request; detailed blocklist information is less visible. |
| GPU blocklist visibility | chrome://gpu reports hardware acceleration, blocklists and GPU-process problems. |
Use console output, OS/browser updates and a Chrome comparison to narrow the cause. |
| Device-loss recovery | Handle device.lost and recreate resources on a replacement device. |
Use the same recovery design; do not rely on Safari-specific handler properties. |
| Shader and pipeline diagnostics | Error scopes and uncaptured-error events expose validation details. | Error scopes and addEventListener('uncapturederror') are safer across releases. |
| Same-machine behavior | May succeed when a Safari-specific WebKit regression fails. | May differ by Safari/macOS build; record versions because fixes can land later. |
A repeatable recovery procedure
- Write down the environment. Capture chip, Mac model, macOS build, browser version, URL origin and the exact console error.
- Run a minimal page. Verify secure context,
navigator.gpu, adapter acquisition and a plainrequestDevice()before loading your full application. - Resolve browser exposure first. Update the browser; in Safari, enable WebGPU through the available Develop setting; use HTTPS or localhost.
- Inspect Chrome’s GPU page. Confirm hardware acceleration and investigate blocklists or repeated GPU-process crashes.
- Relax adapter requirements. Remove power preference, optional features and custom limits, then add only supported requirements back.
- Instrument the device. Attach
device.lost, listen foruncapturederror, and place error scopes around validation-sensitive calls. - Rebuild after loss. Request a replacement device, reconfigure the canvas and recreate every device-owned resource.
- Compare browsers. Test the same build, URL and workload in current Chrome and Safari on the same Mac to separate application defects from browser regressions.
- Update and restart. Install current macOS and browser updates, restart after GPU-process failures, and repeat the minimal test.
What not to conclude from a crash
- A crash does not establish that Apple Silicon lacks WebGPU support; the failure may be a browser GPU-process issue, a blocklist decision or a transient device loss.
- A successful adapter request does not guarantee that every feature, limit or pipeline will validate.
- A feature flag is not a permanent cure. It only changes whether a particular Safari release exposes its implementation.
- A browser reinstall or an external hardware accessory is not a universal solution; use diagnostics to identify the failing stage first.
WebKit’s historical prototype documentation warned that a WebGPU error might cause a crash. Treat that as historical context, not a current expectation: modern code should collect error-scope messages, report reproducible browser versions and recover from nonintentional device loss.
When to report a browser or WebKit bug
Report an issue when a minimal sample reproduces the failure after updates, the same secure URL works in another browser, and your code has removed optional adapter requirements. Include the Mac chip, macOS build, browser build, GPU diagnostics where available, a reduced HTML/JavaScript sample, console output, and whether the failure is a crash, a null adapter, a rejected promise, a lost device or a pipeline validation error. Mention whether the issue persists after a browser restart and whether a newer release changes it.
