Start with Settings > Accessibility: E-Day documents aim-assist, stick-control, weapon-toggle, and remapping options there. Change one setting at a time and try it in the same situation. These steps can correct an uncomfortable configuration; the available official sources do not establish a launch-build-wide aim or weapon-switching defect.
Check the controls before assuming something is broken
Open Settings > Accessibility and note the current values before making changes. The official Gears of War accessibility guide documents the relevant options. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it addresses the problem or makes it worse.

Adjust aim assist to match how you want to aim
Under Accessibility, try the Aim Assist options individually. Their documented behaviors differ:

| Snap Aim | Briefly pulls the reticle toward the closest valid nearby enemy. | You prefer a brief reticle adjustment rather than a continuing target hold. |
| Lock-on Aiming | While aim is active, holds the closest valid target to the reticle; flicking left or right moves to another valid target if one is available. | You want the reticle to stay with a valid target while aiming. |
The Target Lock Audio Cue depends on Lock-on Aiming. If you are testing that mode, check the cue as well so you do not mistake its audio behavior for an aim-control problem.

To compare settings fairly, use the same mode and similar situation for each test. An August 3, 2026 beta FAQ said aim assist affected Campaign and Horde Siege but not Versus. That was a beta-specific note: the official sources available here do not confirm whether the same mode limitation applies to the launch build. Do not assume an aim-assist setting will behave identically in every mode.
Correct a stick layout that feels awkward
If aiming is mapped to a stick that does not suit your setup, try Swap Sticks While Aiming. For a single-stick control setup, the accessibility guide says Single Stick Control works best with the described stick-swap combination. You can also use Controller Remap and the invert-axis or swap-stick options to align the input with your preference.

- Change one mapping at a time and verify which stick moves and which aims.
- If the vertical or horizontal direction feels reversed, inspect the relevant invert-axis option.
- If a remap produces unexpected results, restore the previous value you noted before continuing.
Make switching between primary weapons predictable
If pressing the weapon-swap control does not cycle between your two primary weapons the way you expect, check Toggle Primary Weapon in Accessibility. The guide describes it as letting you press the same weapon-swap button to switch weapons and then switch back—for example, D-pad left to switch and D-pad left again to return.
This setting changes the toggle behavior; it is not a repair for a controller button that fails to register. If switching still does not work, inspect Controller Remap and confirm that the selected button is intentional before treating the behavior as a defect.

When the problem persists
If aim or weapon switching remains unresponsive or behaves inconsistently after checking the settings, record enough detail to make the issue reproducible:
- Platform: Xbox Series X|S or Windows PC.
- Game mode and the action you took immediately before the problem.
- Controller or other input device, including whether it is wired or wireless if relevant.
- Current aim, stick, toggle, and remap settings.
- A short sequence of steps that reliably reproduces the behavior; include screenshots where useful.
Use the official Gears of War support page to report the issue, and check the Xbox service status for a possible service-side problem. Xbox’s October 1, 2026 launch announcement directs players to those routes for issues and service status; the game’s official FAQ also asks for useful detail and screenshots when possible.

Why E-Day controls may feel different from older Gears games
In a June 9, 2026 Xbox podcast, developer Matt Searcy discussed rebuilding movement, adding a jump button, and retaining the series’ heavier feel. The interview also describes active-reload feedback as part of the aiming experience. That context may help explain why the controls feel different, but it does not show that a particular aim problem is expected or that a specific setting will fix it. As of October 4, 2026, Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 with an October 6, 2026 release date. Xbox’s October 1 announcement said Premium early access was already live and gave the worldwide launch time as October 6 at 15:00 UTC. The launch date is still ahead at the time of writing, so beta notes should not be presented as verified launch-build behavior. See the Xbox product page and the October 1 Xbox Wire announcement.

Xbox also lists a limited-edition E-Day Xbox Wireless Controller. It is an optional replacement or themed controller, not an established fix for aim-assist behavior, incorrect settings, or a software defect. A different controller is worth considering only if you have a separate reason to suspect your current input device.
