Most Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 problems have a narrow cause rather than one universal fix. Check your PC against the published 1080p targets, update the game and drivers, install Intel’s current NPU driver if an Intel Core Ultra system fails with Fatal Error, and use the correct campaign save if Continue loads the wrong level. A drop limited to the Nurgle Nightmare campaign is a developer-confirmed bug scheduled for a hotfix, not necessarily a failing GPU.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 launched on Steam for Windows on October 14, 2026. It is a DirectX 12, single-player game developed by Auroch Digital and published by Big Fan Games and Devolver Digital. Steam lists the title as Steam Deck Verified and showed 94% positive reviews from 417 reviews at the time of the published check. The correct remedy depends on when the problem occurs.

Check whether your PC meets the 1080p targets
Steam presents two targets. They are performance goals for particular quality presets, not a guarantee of a locked 60 frames per second in every scene. Compare every component, not just the graphics card.

A system below the minimum can require reduced resolution or quality, and an upgrade may be the practical solution. Even a system that meets a row in the table can dip below 60 FPS in a demanding scene, because the figures describe target profiles rather than every possible encounter. Make sure the game is installed on a drive with at least the stated free space and that Windows is 64-bit.

Do the safe update pass first
- Open Steam, select Boltgun 2 in your Library, and allow every pending game update to complete. This is especially important for the campaign bugs listed below, because the developer has scheduled hotfixes.
- Install current Windows updates and the latest driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics hardware. Restart Windows after the installation rather than testing immediately in the same session.
- If the processor is an Intel Core Ultra model and the game reports Fatal Error at launch, install Intel’s current NPU Driver for Windows, reboot, and try the game again. Auroch Digital specifically identifies this hardware class as affected and says a game-side fix is also in progress.
- Close the game completely before each comparison. Record whether the failure happens before the menu, in a particular campaign, or after loading a save; those distinctions determine which branch to follow.
Fixing Fatal Error on startup
Why this happens
Auroch Digital reports that the launch Fatal Error appears to affect specific hardware, such as Intel Core Ultra CPUs. That makes this a different problem from an ordinary low-FPS scene: the game may fail before it can render the menu.
Driver procedure
- Identify whether the PC uses an Intel Core Ultra processor.
- Download and install the current Intel NPU Driver for Windows from Intel’s official support channel.
- Restart the PC after the installer finishes. A restart is part of the test because the driver must be loaded by Windows before the game starts.
- Launch Boltgun 2 from Steam. If it now reaches the menu, the NPU driver was the relevant change.
- If the Fatal Error remains, keep the game updated and report the failure with your CPU model, graphics card, Windows version, driver versions, and the point at which the crash occurs. The developer has said a game-side fix is also being prepared, so an unchanged result does not prove that your hardware is defective.
Do not treat a launch crash as evidence that lowering in-game quality will help; quality options cannot be changed until the game reaches the menu.
When FPS drops in Nurgle Nightmare
The developer has named a specific issue: “Nurgle FPS drops” during the Nurgle Nightmare campaign. If frame rate is normal elsewhere and collapses in that section, the pattern matches the known bug.

- Update Boltgun 2 through Steam before changing numerous graphics settings.
- Replay or revisit the same location only after the update has completed, and note whether the drop still occurs in the same encounter.
- If the problem remains limited to Nurgle Nightmare, report the campaign section, quality preset, resolution, approximate frame-rate behavior, and hardware. Describe it as the known campaign-specific issue instead of assuming the entire PC is underpowered.
Auroch Digital has said a hotfix is planned. No universal setting change has been published as a confirmed solution for this bug.
Repairing Continue and campaign loading
Use the campaign save instead of Continue
The developer believes a particular save flow causes Continue to select the most recent Level Select save. This can happen after entering a level through Level Select and then leaving the game.
- Quit back to the main menu rather than repeatedly selecting Continue.
- Open Load Level.
- Select the save belonging to your campaign run, not the save created by Level Select.
- Load that campaign save and continue from there.
Some players have reported that simply restarting the game corrected the behavior. That is a player report, not a guaranteed fix, so use the explicit campaign-save selection when the problem returns. Keep the game updated while the developer works on the underlying issue.

Known progression and collision bugs
The Trenches final purge
Auroch Digital lists a bug in which the final purge in The Trenches does not end. If the objective remains active after the required combat, update the game and check for the developer’s hotfix rather than repeatedly replaying the section as if you had missed an objective.

Stuck inside the Lord of Skulls
The same known-bugs notice reports players becoming stuck inside the Lord of Skulls. This is a collision problem scheduled for a hotfix. Record the level, the action that placed your character inside the model, and whether restarting changes the position, then provide those details in a bug report after confirming that the game is current.
Methodical troubleshooting for general stutter or low FPS
The official material does not identify one universal stutter setting, registry edit, shader-cache operation, or FPS-booster program that fixes every PC. Use a controlled comparison so that each result is meaningful.

1. Establish a repeatable test
- Choose one location that you can reach consistently.
- Write down the resolution, quality preset, and whether the issue is a steady low frame rate or short pauses.
- Record whether the behavior is present from the menu onward or begins only in a particular level, encounter, or effect-heavy scene.
- Keep the same test route and settings while comparing one change at a time.
2. Separate a hardware limit from a game bug
If performance is low throughout the game and your processor, graphics card, or memory is below the minimum table, start with reduced quality or resolution and plan for hardware that meets the published target. If performance is normal in most areas but fails in one campaign section, the location-specific pattern is more consistent with a game issue. If only launching fails, follow the NPU-driver branch instead of changing quality settings.
3. Compare the published quality targets
Use the Steam profiles as reference points: Low Quality at 1080p and 60 FPS for the minimum target, or High Quality at 1080p and 60 FPS for the recommended target. Change the preset or resolution, run the same test route, and record the result. A meaningful comparison says exactly what changed and where; “it feels smoother” is not enough to distinguish a driver problem from a demanding scene.

Write down the Windows edition, CPU and GPU models, graphics-driver version, Intel NPU-driver version when applicable, game build after the latest Steam update, resolution, preset, and observed frame-rate range. This prevents a driver update, hotfix, and settings change from being mistaken for one another and gives the developer reproducible information.

How to report a remaining problem
A useful report is specific enough for the developer to reproduce. Include:
- Whether the issue is a startup Fatal Error, a crash after the menu, stutter, sustained low FPS, a save-loading failure, or a progression/collision problem.
- Your CPU, GPU, RAM amount, Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition, DirectX 12 support, and free storage.
- The exact campaign, level, or encounter and the action immediately before the failure.
- Resolution, quality preset, observed frame-rate behavior, and whether the issue occurs every time.
- Which updates you installed, including the Intel NPU Driver when relevant, and whether a restart changed the result.
For the Nurgle Nightmare drop, identify the affected campaign section. For Continue, state that you entered through Level Select and whether choosing the campaign save through Load Level worked. For The Trenches or Lord of Skulls, identify the objective or collision location and whether the latest hotfix is installed.
Fixes that are not established
Do not present a launch option, registry edit, shader-cache deletion, or generic “FPS booster” as a tested Boltgun 2 solution. The documented remedies are the Intel NPU-driver update for the affected launch hardware, selecting the correct campaign save, restarting when appropriate, installing game hotfixes, and making settings or hardware decisions based on the published targets. Anything beyond that should be described as an unverified experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
