If Warcraft III: Reforged crashes before a usable game window appears, shows a black screen, or Battle.net changes to Play and then does nothing, treat it as a launch failure first. Check requirements, update Windows and your graphics driver, remove security-software and overlay conflicts, repair the installation, and confirm the game is fully patched. A crash that happens only in a campaign mission or after a specific patch needs a different diagnosis from a failure that affects every launch.
Use the sequence below in order. It starts with reversible checks and ends with the diagnostic information Blizzard Support needs if the problem persists.
Identify the failure stage before changing anything
The timing and scope of the failure are more useful than the word “crash” alone. Blizzard’s launch-crash guidance is intended for a crash while the game is starting. A black screen or a crash after the game has loaded follows a different support path, so record exactly what you see.
| Where it fails | Typical symptom | Best first branch |
|---|---|---|
| Before a usable window | Battle.net returns to Play, the process closes, or no window appears | Requirements, Windows and graphics-driver updates, blockers, then installation repair |
| At startup display | A black screen appears instead of the menu | Treat it as a startup failure; test overlays, security software, drivers and patch state before changing in-game settings |
| At the menu | The game reaches the interface and then freezes or closes | Check patch notes, background programs and graphics-driver state; note the exact menu action |
| One campaign or mission | Other modes launch, but one mission freezes or crashes | Compare the symptom with current Warcraft III: Reforged patch notes before reinstalling or replacing hardware |
| During a match or map | Launch succeeds, but a particular map or session fails | Record the map, mode and reproduction steps; this is not the same as a universal launch failure |
Write down whether the problem affects every launch or only one map, mission, screen or account. Also note whether it began after a game patch, Windows update, graphics-driver change or installation of another utility. Those details determine which tests are meaningful.

Run the low-risk checks first
Close the game and reboot once
Exit Warcraft III: Reforged and Battle.net, then restart Windows. This is not a cure for corrupted files, but it removes a stuck client process and gives the next test a clean baseline. Do not launch several troubleshooting utilities at the same time; change one variable, test once, and record the result.
Confirm the computer meets the current minimum requirements
Blizzard lists unmet minimum requirements among the common causes of launch errors. Compare your processor, memory, graphics hardware, available storage and supported operating system with the current Warcraft III: Reforged requirements published by Blizzard. Do not assume that a computer capable of running another game meets this title’s requirements.
If a component is below the minimum, software troubleshooting cannot make that component meet the requirement. If the computer meets the minimum, continue with the software checks rather than treating the requirement check as proof that the system is healthy.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Install pending Windows updates
Apply all available Windows updates and restart when Windows requests it. An outdated operating system can prevent a game client or its graphics components from starting correctly. After the restart, test the game before adding any compatibility utility or changing files manually.
Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer
Install the current driver for the graphics hardware in the computer, then reboot. Graphics-driver updates are one of Blizzard’s first checks for launch errors. If the issue started immediately after a driver update, record that fact; it gives support a useful boundary for the failure and may justify testing the previous known-working driver through the manufacturer’s supported process.

Remove programs that can block startup
Test security software without weakening the computer permanently
Blizzard identifies security software that blocks the game client as a common cause. Temporarily pause protection only long enough to perform a controlled launch test, or use the security product’s documented game or application exception feature. Disconnect from untrusted networks while protection is paused, do not browse or download files during the test, and restore protection immediately afterward.
If the game starts only while protection is paused, do not leave protection disabled. Add the appropriate Blizzard and Warcraft III: Reforged executables using the security product’s approved exception process, then retest with protection enabled. If there is no change, restore the original settings and move to the next branch.
Close overlays and background applications
Background applications can intercept the game before it creates a usable window. Blizzard specifically calls out programs that modify mouse behavior, graphics-driver settings or game presentation. Shut down overlay, capture, hardware-monitoring, macro, mouse-enhancement and graphics-tuning utilities for one test session. Also close unnecessary launchers and messaging applications that inject an overlay.
Use a controlled test rather than closing random processes indefinitely: exit the suspected utility, launch the game, and record whether the result changes. If it does, re-enable utilities one at a time to identify the conflict. Keep the conflicting program closed when playing, update it, or use its own setting to disable game injection.
Do not stack compatibility tools
Running several overlay, compatibility or “performance” tools together makes the cause harder to isolate. Start with the unmodified game client, current Windows updates and a current graphics driver. Add optional tools back only after a successful launch.

Update and repair the installation in Battle.net
Let Battle.net finish patching
Open Battle.net, select Warcraft III: Reforged, and wait for the client to finish any download, “initializing” phase or update. A game that appears playable while files are still being patched can fail before the menu or load an incomplete state. Do not interrupt the update, put the computer to sleep, or start the game from an old shortcut while patching is in progress.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the installation repair option
- Open Battle.net and select Warcraft III: Reforged.
- Open the game’s gear or options menu beside the Play button.
- Choose Blizzard’s installation check or Scan and Repair option, using the label shown in your client version.
- Allow the scan to complete and download replacements before launching the game.
- Restart Battle.net if requested, then perform one clean launch test with overlays closed.
Repair is preferable to immediately deleting folders because it verifies the installation through the launcher and can replace damaged data. Keep a note of whether the scan found and replaced files; that information is useful if you need support.
Why patch level matters
Some failures are defects in a particular game build, not evidence that your hardware is failing. Blizzard’s Warcraft III: Reforged version 1.36.1 notes document a crash in the Fall of Silvermoon caused by a visual-effects thread issue, a campaign freeze, and a crash caused by campaign subfolders. These examples show why a complete update should precede drastic local changes when the symptom is tied to a campaign or a recently changed feature.
Fix a black screen at launch
A black screen before a usable menu is still a startup failure. Do not spend time changing campaign settings that you cannot reach. Work through the startup branches in this order:
- Confirm Battle.net has finished updating and run its installation repair.
- Install current Windows updates and the current graphics driver, then restart.
- Close overlays and applications that alter mouse input, graphics-driver behavior, capture or presentation.
- Perform a controlled test with security software temporarily paused or with a documented exception in place.
- Record whether the black screen affects every launch or began with one mission, map or patch.
If the screen remains black after these checks, capture the duration and behavior precisely: whether audio plays, whether the cursor appears, whether the window responds, and whether the process closes by itself. Do not describe all of these outcomes simply as “it crashes”; each points to a different diagnostic path for support.

Handle crashes after the game has loaded
At the main menu
When the menu appears before the crash, the failure is no longer a pure pre-window launch problem. Close background applications and overlays first, then verify the installation and patch level. Note the exact menu action—opening a profile, changing a setting, entering a mode or waiting idle—because “crashes at the menu” is too broad for reliable troubleshooting.
In a campaign mission
If the crash is limited to one mission, compare the mission name and trigger with Blizzard’s current patch notes. The 1.36.1 notes include campaign-specific fixes, including the Fall of Silvermoon visual-effects crash and a campaign freeze. A mission-only failure that began after adding campaign subfolders is also relevant because the same notes document a crash associated with campaign subfolders.
Do not reinstall Windows or replace graphics hardware based only on a single campaign failure. First confirm the game is patched, run installation repair, and document whether a different campaign or a new test game loads normally.
In a match or map
Record the map name, game mode, approximate time to failure and the action immediately before the crash. Test another map or mode once. If only one map reproduces the issue, include that scope in your support report rather than presenting it as a universal launch failure.

| Observed scope | Most informative next test | What not to conclude yet |
|---|---|---|
| Every launch fails before a window | Requirements, updates, blockers, then Battle.net repair | That the graphics card is defective |
| Only a black screen, with no usable menu | Startup-blocker and driver tests; verify patch completion | That an in-game setting is responsible |
| Menu works, one action crashes | Repeat the exact action with overlays closed and note the screen | That the installation is entirely unusable |
| One campaign mission fails | Check the mission against current patch notes and test another mission | That Windows must be reinstalled |
| Failure started after a patch | Confirm the new build and read its documented fixes | That a local hardware change caused it |
When reinstalling is reasonable—and when it is not
A clean reinstall is a later step, not the first response to a black screen. Use Battle.net’s repair and update functions before removing the game. Reinstalling can replace damaged files, but it does not correct an unmet requirement, an outdated graphics driver, a security rule or an overlay conflict. It also cannot fix a defect that was addressed only in a newer game build if the newly installed copy is not fully patched.
Before any reinstall, write down the failure stage, the patch level, the result of the repair scan and the programs disabled during testing. That record prevents you from repeating the same steps without learning anything. After reinstalling, allow Battle.net to complete every update before the first launch, and test with background applications closed.
Prepare a support-quality diagnostic report
Persistent failures should be escalated with evidence rather than a one-line “won’t start” report. Blizzard’s common-issues guidance asks for a DxDiag file, the troubleshooting already performed, what was happening when the error occurred, the exact error message and a description of what the failure looks like.
Create a DxDiag file in Windows
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - Allow the diagnostic tool to finish checking the system.
- Choose Save All Information and save the text file where you can attach it.
Do not edit out the hardware, operating-system or driver information that support needs. Remove personal information only if it is clearly unrelated and you understand what you are deleting.
Include an exact reproduction
- State whether the failure occurs before a usable window, at a black screen, at the menu, in a named campaign mission or during a match.
- Say whether every launch fails or only a particular map, mission or screen.
- Give the game version shown by Battle.net and note whether the failure began after a patch, Windows update or graphics-driver change.
- Copy the exact error text, including punctuation and any numeric code.
- Describe what happens visually and audibly: immediate close, freeze, black screen, return to Battle.net, audio continuing or no response.
- List each test and its result: updates, driver installation, overlay shutdown, security-software test, installation repair and any reinstall.
Blizzard notes that technical issues are frustrating to diagnose alone. A DxDiag file plus a precise reproduction gives support a usable starting point and helps separate a local configuration problem from a game-specific defect.
A practical decision tree
- No usable game window: verify requirements, update Windows and the graphics driver, test security software and overlays, then repair and patch through Battle.net.
- Black screen only: remain on the startup branch; record whether audio, cursor or responsiveness changes, and do not assume a campaign setting is involved.
- Menu appears: document the exact action that triggers the crash and repeat it with background programs closed.
- One campaign or map fails: compare the symptom with current patch notes and test another mission or map to establish scope.
- Still failing after all checks: create DxDiag, collect exact error text and reproduction steps, and escalate through Blizzard’s technical-support channel.
Keep the original settings after each test unless the result identifies a specific conflict. Changing many things at once can make the game appear fixed while leaving the real cause unknown, or can remove information support needs to reproduce the failure.
