A missing SharePoint thumbnail usually comes from the library view, an unsupported or oversized file, or the fact that you are looking at a page or video thumbnail rather than a picture-library preview. First identify the SharePoint surface, then apply the matching fix: switch to a thumbnail-capable view, verify the image format and size, or edit the page or video thumbnail settings.

Identify where the thumbnail is missing

SharePoint does not use one thumbnail system everywhere. A classic Picture Library, a modern document library, a modern SharePoint page, and a video item have different controls and failure modes.

  • Classic Picture Library: check the selected view and the 50-megapixel issue described below.
  • Modern document library: check the view configuration and file preview compatibility.
  • Modern page: edit the page image or page thumbnail; changing a library view will not repair search or news imagery.
  • Video: use the video’s Thumbnail controls rather than the image-library settings.

Also test the file itself. In Microsoft’s documented large-image defect, the thumbnail is missing but selecting the file name still opens the image. A generic icon therefore does not necessarily mean that the file is corrupt or inaccessible.

Fix a classic SharePoint Online Picture Library

Reduce images over 50 megapixels

Microsoft documents a thumbnail-preview defect in classic SharePoint Online Picture Libraries when an image exceeds 50 megapixels. The documented workaround is to reduce the image to less than 50 megapixels or use the new SharePoint Online Document Library view. The 50-megapixel threshold applies specifically to the classic SharePoint Online Picture Library experience; do not treat it as a universal limit for every SharePoint Server or Microsoft 365 preview surface.

  1. Download or open the original image in an editor that reports pixel dimensions.
  2. Multiply width by height. For example, 8,000 × 7,000 pixels equals 56 megapixels.
  3. Resize it below 50,000,000 total pixels, export it as a supported image format, and upload the replacement.
  4. Reload the library and select the file name to confirm that the image opens.
  5. If you need to retain the original resolution, move the files to a modern document-library view and test the thumbnails there.

Choose a thumbnail-capable view

Classic Picture Libraries provide All Pictures, Thumbnails, and Slides views. Use the library’s view selector and choose Thumbnails when you need image previews. If the library has been customized, edit or switch the view so that it displays file thumbnails rather than only names and icons.

In a modern document library, open the view menu and choose a layout that supports file thumbnails. If every file suddenly shows a generic icon, view selection is more likely than individual image corruption.

Check format and preview compatibility

Preview rendering depends on the SharePoint edition and the file type. Microsoft’s supported preview lists include common formats such as JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, SVG, TIFF/TIF, BMP, and PSD, with the exact list varying by service and edition.

Use a conversion test

  1. Compare a failing extension with the supported-format list for your SharePoint environment.
  2. Make a copy of the image and convert it to JPG or PNG.
  3. Upload the converted copy with a new file name.
  4. If the converted file receives a thumbnail, the original format or its encoding is the likely cause.

Do not overwrite the source until you have verified color profile, transparency, animation, and quality requirements. A conversion can change those properties even when it restores the preview.

Check image dimensions and size

OneDrive.com guidance says thumbnails or image previews are available below 100 MB, approximately 12,000 × 8,000 pixels. This is related diagnostic guidance, not a blanket SharePoint limit: SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and SharePoint Server editions can differ. Confirm which service and experience your users are using before applying that figure to a tenant-wide policy.

For a practical test, upload a smaller copy with the same extension. If the smaller file previews, inspect both its byte size and pixel dimensions. Large dimensions can trigger the classic 50-megapixel defect even when the file is not especially large in megabytes.

Repair page thumbnails and page images

A modern page’s thumbnail is separate from a document-library preview. Page thumbnails appear in places such as search, highlighted content, and news. If an image looks correct when the page is open but is absent in search or news, edit the page rather than the library.

  1. Open the SharePoint page and select Edit.
  2. Select the page image or page thumbnail property in the page details or image controls.
  3. Upload or select a supported image, save the page, and republish it if your site requires publishing.
  4. Use a 16:9 source where appropriate, as Microsoft recommends that ratio for page-thumbnail imagery.
  5. Allow indexing and cached cards to refresh before judging the result in search or news.

If only one web part card is wrong, verify that the card is using the page thumbnail property rather than an unrelated image URL.

Set a video thumbnail

Video poster images use video controls, not Picture Library views. Open the video in the library, choose Video settings, and use the Thumbnail controls to upload or change the image. Save the change and reopen the item from the library.

If the uploaded poster is rejected or remains blank, test a JPG or PNG copy and confirm that you have permission to edit the video metadata. A library-wide view change will not set a video’s poster image.

Decision tree for missing thumbnails

  • Only very large images fail in a classic Picture Library: calculate pixels, reduce below 50 megapixels, or move to the modern document-library view.
  • Only certain extensions fail: compare them with the supported preview list and test a JPG or PNG conversion.
  • Every file shows an icon: switch from the current view to Thumbnails or another thumbnail-capable modern layout.
  • The page is fine but search or news is not: edit the page thumbnail and image properties; use a suitable 16:9 source.
  • A video has no poster image: open Video settings and upload or change its Thumbnail.
  • The file name opens the image but its preview is blank: treat this as a rendering or compatibility problem first, not proof that the file is lost.

Reliable troubleshooting workflow

1. Reproduce with a known-good file

Upload a small JPG or PNG to the same library and view. If it previews, the library is functioning and the failing file’s dimensions, format, or encoding deserve attention. If it also fails, continue with view and permission checks.

2. Test the file name and permissions

Select the file name, not just the icon. Confirm that the image opens and that your account can read the item. Ask another permitted user to test when the result may be caused by a personal session or permission boundary.

3. Confirm classic versus modern experience

Use the library’s experience and view controls to determine whether the 50-megapixel classic-library guidance applies. Do not apply a classic-view workaround to a modern page thumbnail or video poster.

4. Retest after replacing or converting

Use a new file name while testing so a cached tile is not mistaken for a fresh result. Check the result in the same view where the problem occurred, then test search or news separately for page thumbnails.

If your goal is to capture a SharePoint page or document view for documentation, QA, or an automated report, ScreenshotNeo provides a single screenshot API call. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server supplies take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the full parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Replace the example URL with a page your authenticated capture workflow can access.

Operational and cost notes

  • Keep original high-resolution files and store a preview-sized derivative when users need fast browsing.
  • Use consistent JPG or PNG test files to separate library configuration problems from format problems.
  • When automating captures, wait for a meaningful selector or network idle so a page is not recorded before its image tiles load.
  • For private SharePoint pages, supply the required authentication headers or cookies only through an approved, secure workflow.
  • Check the response verdict and billing headers when using an external capture service; a failed page should not be mistaken for a valid screenshot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will rebuilding a SharePoint index restore a missing image thumbnail?

Usually not. Indexing affects discoverability and search results; a library preview still depends on the selected view, supported format, image dimensions, and the correct page or video thumbnail property.

Can I fix the problem by renaming the image extension?

No. Renaming changes the label, not the file encoding. Convert and export the image to a genuinely supported format, then upload the converted file.

Does the 50-megapixel rule apply to SharePoint Server?

The documented defect is specifically for classic SharePoint Online Picture Libraries. Confirm limits and preview behavior for your SharePoint Server edition before applying it.
