The reliable fix sequence for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered on PS5 Pro is: install the current game build and Patch 5.01, stop background downloads, fully restart the console after Rest Mode, check ventilation and dust, and restart the game after a long session. Then verify HDR at both the PS5 and television, confirm that the display supports VRR, and compare the two graphics modes with VRR recorded. Those steps address the software, display and console-state causes that can look identical on screen.

PS5 Pro support is official. The Remastered release notes add PSSR, VRR and uncapped frame rates; Ray Tracing Mode targets 60 FPS, while Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and can reach up to 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display. HDR settings that fail to appear should be treated as an update problem first, not as evidence that the television is incompatible.

Start with the current build

Do not diagnose HDR, VRR or frame pacing on an old installation. CD PROJEKT RED’s PlayStation 5 feature notes for the Remastered release, dated 28 September 2026, add official PS5 Pro support and specifically list PSSR, VRR and uncapped frame rates. The same notes record a fix for an issue in which HDR settings sometimes did not appear on consoles.

Install Patch 5.01 before changing display settings

Patch 5.01 was published on 8 October 2026. Its console changes include general performance optimizations, a fix for PlayStation 5 settings resetting at launch, and a fix for incorrect frame-rate limits in different graphics modes on the base PS5. It also adjusts Bloom, tone mapping, character lighting, Ray Tracing and Path Tracing. These changes can alter both perceived image quality and frame pacing, so make the update the first diagnostic step.

  1. From the PS5 home screen, highlight the game and press the Options button.
  2. Choose Check for Update and allow the download and installation to finish.
  3. Start the game and confirm that you are running the Remastered PS5 build rather than an older or incompatible installation.
  4. Apply any pending console software update, then launch the game again before evaluating HDR or VRR.

If the HDR menu was missing before the update, check it again immediately after the game and console updates. The official fix specifically covers that symptom.

What the PS5 Pro graphics modes are designed to do

The official notes describe two relevant graphics targets. They are targets, not a promise that every scene will measure identically on every display.

Mode Lighting and image emphasis Official frame-rate target VRR requirement for the stated maximum Best diagnostic use
Ray Tracing Mode Enhanced lighting through the ray-tracing presentation Targets 60 FPS None stated for the 60-FPS target Check whether lighting quality is worth any frame-pacing difference on your display
Performance Mode Higher resolution than the earlier performance presentation, with performance prioritized Targets 60 FPS and can reach up to 90 FPS Up to 90 FPS behavior is specifically tied to a VRR-capable display Check the smoothest presentation and whether VRR is behaving correctly

PSSR is a reconstruction feature intended to deliver higher visual fidelity without compromising performance, according to the release notes. It does not replace correct television calibration or fix a console that is overheating. Use the modes as controlled comparisons: change only the mode, keep the same scene and camera movement, and note whether the hitch follows one mode or remains in both.

Fix HDR that is missing, disabled or washed out

When the HDR controls do not appear

First complete the game update and launch it again. The 28 September 2026 release notes explicitly list a console fix for HDR settings not appearing. If the controls are still absent after updating, perform a full PS5 restart rather than returning to Rest Mode, then check the game menu again.

Confirm HDR at the PS5 system level

  1. Open Settings on the PS5.
  2. Go to Screen and Video, then Video Output.
  3. Check the HDR setting and use the console’s HDR adjustment screens with the television in its intended game/HDR picture mode.
  4. Return to the game and verify that its HDR option is enabled when the menu is available.

The exact slider values that look correct depend on the television, its peak brightness, tone-mapping behavior and room lighting. No universal Witcher 3 value is established by the official notes. Treat the console adjustment and the in-game controls as a matched setup rather than copying a number from another display.

Correct a washed-out image without chasing several variables at once

A washed-out picture usually means the console, game and television are not applying the same HDR expectation. Make one change, return to the same scene and compare it before changing another setting.

  • Put the television in its game picture mode and enable its HDR mode for the HDMI input used by the PS5.
  • Confirm that the PS5 is outputting HDR as configured in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  • Check that the game’s HDR option is enabled after the update.
  • Use the television’s HDR controls for brightness, tone mapping and local dimming according to that display’s own behavior; do not assume a setting from a different panel will transfer.
  • Temporarily return to the same scene after each adjustment. If highlights clip or dark areas become gray, undo the last change rather than stacking additional corrections.

Patch 5.01 includes visual adjustments to Bloom and tone mapping, so an image can look different from an earlier build even when the television has not changed. Judge the updated image only after the patch is installed and the display has been returned to its normal game/HDR profile.

Separate an HDR problem from a cable or input problem

If HDR works in other PS5 games but not in The Witcher 3, focus on the game update, its HDR menu and its saved settings. If HDR fails across the console, verify the television input and its HDR capability before altering Witcher 3 settings. Test with the same HDMI input and picture mode throughout; switching inputs while troubleshooting can introduce a second variable.

Set up VRR correctly on PS5 Pro

Check the display before expecting high frame rates

The official feature notes condition Performance Mode’s up-to-90-FPS behavior on a VRR-capable display. A television or monitor that does not support VRR cannot show that behavior, even though the PS5 Pro build supports VRR and uncapped frame rates.

  1. Confirm that the television or monitor advertises VRR support and that VRR is enabled in its game or HDMI settings.
  2. On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and verify the VRR option is available and enabled.
  3. Launch the game after enabling VRR, then select Performance Mode if you are testing the VRR-dependent behavior.
  4. Keep the display’s game mode active and avoid changing HDR tone mapping during this test.

VRR smooths changes in presentation timing; it does not create frames that the game does not render and it cannot cure a console that is thermally throttling or busy with downloads. A display may also have a limited VRR operating range. If the image is smooth in some scenes and uneven in others, record the scene, mode and whether VRR was enabled rather than assuming the feature is defective.

Why stutter can remain with VRR enabled

Stutter is a frame-pacing symptom, not a single diagnosis. A VRR display can reduce the visibility of ordinary frame-time variation, but it cannot hide every hitch caused by background activity, a Rest Mode cache state, overheating or a long-running game session. Compare the same area with VRR on and off only after completing the console-state checklist below. Otherwise you may be measuring two problems at once.

Use this order for stuttering, low frame rates and long loads

CD PROJEKT RED’s technical support guidance covers low frame rates, slow or choppy performance and long loading times. Apply it in this order so each step removes a different possible cause.

1. Finish updates and stop background downloads

Pause or complete downloads from the PS5 Downloads/Uploads panel, then close other running applications. Network activity and installation work can compete with the game for console resources. Re-test the same location after the activity has ended.

2. Perform a full restart after Rest Mode

Rest Mode does not clear the cache. The support guidance specifically says to restart the console after using Rest Mode because the retained state may contribute to performance issues.

  1. Press the PS button and open the power menu.
  2. Choose Restart PS5, not Rest Mode.
  3. Wait for the console to return to the home screen, then launch the game normally.

Use this restart whenever the problem appears after waking the console, especially if a shutdown and cold boot have not been performed recently.

3. Check airflow and overheating

Make sure the PS5 Pro has unobstructed airflow and is not enclosed in a tight cabinet. Check for dust or dirt around the rear vents and clean the exterior using the console manufacturer’s safe procedure. The technical support checklist identifies overheating, poor airflow and rear dust as causes to rule out for choppy performance and long loads.

Do not infer overheating solely from a warm case. Look for a pattern: stutter that increases after the console has been running for a while, an unusually loud fan, or a problem that improves after the system cools. If the console displays an overheating warning, stop playing and address ventilation before further testing.

4. Restart the game after a long session

The support guidance recommends restarting the game after long play sessions to clear memory and improve performance. Save normally, exit to the PS5 home screen, close the game, and launch it again. Re-test the same scene rather than judging only from the opening area.

5. Check the physical disc when applicable

If you are using a disc edition, inspect it for damage or dirt. The official checklist includes disc condition among the causes of slow or choppy behavior and long loading times. Clean it carefully according to the console manufacturer’s instructions and test again. Digital installations do not have this disc-specific failure mode.

Compare modes as a controlled diagnostic

After updates, a full restart, airflow checks and a fresh game launch, compare Ray Tracing Mode and Performance Mode. The goal is not to declare one mode universally superior; it is to identify whether the symptom follows a rendering mode or persists independently of it.

  1. Stand in a repeatable location with moving foliage, crowds or a camera pan that makes pacing easy to see.
  2. Record whether VRR is enabled, the television’s game/HDR mode, and whether the session began after a full restart.
  3. Play for several minutes in Ray Tracing Mode without changing other settings.
  4. Return to the same location and test Performance Mode under the same display conditions.
  5. Note three separate observations: lighting quality, apparent sharpness or resolution, and consistency of motion.

Use the results to classify the problem:

Observation Most useful next check
Both modes hitch in the same moments Repeat the console-state sequence: stop downloads, restart after Rest Mode, verify airflow and restart the game after a long session.
Only one mode shows the hitch, while the other is stable Keep the stable mode and check VRR behavior, display range and the mode-specific frame-rate target.
Motion is smooth but the image looks gray or flat Work through the HDR system, game and television checks without changing graphics mode.
Performance Mode feels smoother only when VRR is enabled Confirm that the display is VRR-capable and that both the PS5 and display have VRR enabled.
The problem appears only after Rest Mode or many hours Use a full console restart after Rest Mode and restart the game after the long session.

Recommended settings by priority

If smooth motion is your priority

Use Performance Mode on a VRR-capable display, with VRR enabled at both ends of the connection. This is the configuration in which the official notes allow the mode to reach its highest stated frame rate. Keep HDR configured consistently while you evaluate motion so tone-mapping changes do not distract from frame pacing.

If lighting detail is your priority

Use Ray Tracing Mode and evaluate the enhanced lighting in the same scene used for the performance comparison. Its official target is 60 FPS. If the result feels uneven on your display, complete the stutter checklist before blaming ray tracing; a retained Rest Mode state or a long session can affect either mode.

If you do not have a VRR display

Do not use the up-to-90-FPS figure as an expectation for a fixed-refresh television. Choose between the two modes based on the image and motion you prefer on that display, and judge consistency after a full restart and a fresh game launch.

When the usual fixes do not work

Keep a short record before contacting PlayStation or CD PROJEKT RED support. Include the Remastered build and Patch 5.01 status, whether the console was restarted after Rest Mode, the selected graphics mode, VRR state, HDR state, display type, the scene where the hitch occurs, and whether the issue appears immediately or only after a long session. This information distinguishes a persistent game or console fault from a recoverable cache, download or thermal condition.

If settings continue to reset at launch despite Patch 5.01, or if severe stutter remains in both modes after the console is fully restarted, background downloads are stopped, airflow is clear and the game has been relaunched, avoid repeatedly changing HDR sliders. Restore a known-good television game/HDR profile, reproduce the issue once, and report the recorded conditions. A reproducible comparison is more useful than a list of unrelated setting changes.
