The fastest way to fix The Outlast Trials connection problems is to identify whether the failure affects everyone or only your party, then test one layer at a time. Check for a service or platform outage, retry a temporary matchmaking error, install game and system updates, verify automatic time synchronization, review firewall or antivirus permissions, test the router and internet path, and then inspect NAT and latency. If only one player is affected, isolate that player’s platform or network before changing the whole group’s setup.
The Outlast Trials requires an internet connection even when you play alone. Red Barrels states: “You must have an Internet connection to play The Outlast Trials whether you play alone (1 player) or with friends (2-3 or 4 players).”
Start with the symptom and its scope
Do not begin by changing router settings when the game’s servers or a console platform are unavailable. First note exactly what happens, when it happens, and who is affected. These observations narrow the problem before you make a change.

After every change, test the same action again. Nintendo’s matchmaking guidance specifically recommends testing after network changes; doing so also lets you identify which change helped.

1. Check for an outage before troubleshooting your home network
Open the relevant status page for the game service and your platform (PC, PlayStation, or Xbox). Ubisoft’s connectivity portal includes server-status and connectivity categories, while SEGA’s network guide begins with client and server status checks. These are general status resources, so the exact page and availability can differ by platform and region.
How to interpret a status result
- Confirmed incident or maintenance: Stop local troubleshooting and try again after the service reports recovery.
- No incident listed, but everyone is failing: Retry once, then capture the time and error. Status pages can lag behind a new incident, and a regional problem may not be shown immediately.
- Only your party is affected: Continue with client, account, and network checks rather than assuming a global outage.
A service check is especially important after a game update or when several friends in different locations fail simultaneously. Changing DNS, forwarding ports, or resetting a router cannot repair a server-side outage.
2. Retry a temporary matchmaking failure correctly
For the exact message “Failed to find server for match,” Red Barrels’ official announcement says to “wait a few moments and try again.” Leave the matchmaking screen, wait briefly, and start the search again rather than repeatedly clicking through the same failed request.

- Wait a few moments without changing network settings.
- Retry matchmaking.
- If it succeeds, treat the failure as transient and continue playing.
- If it repeats, move to the update, firewall, network, NAT, and party-isolation checks below.
Do not describe one successful retry as proof that your router is fixed. A transient error can return later, so note whether the problem is occasional or happens every session.
3. Update The Outlast Trials, the launcher, and the system
SEGA’s official network guidance recommends installing required client and game updates and keeping system drivers current. An outdated game build or launcher can fail to negotiate with the current service even when your internet browser works normally.
PC
- Open the game launcher and allow pending updates for The Outlast Trials.
- Install updates for the launcher itself when offered.
- Apply operating-system updates and current graphics or network drivers through the normal, legitimate update channels.
- Restart the computer after updates that request a reboot, then test online access again.
PlayStation and Xbox
- Check the console’s game-management screen for an available update.
- Install pending system software updates.
- Restart the console after installation before testing matchmaking.
Record whether the problem started immediately after an update. That timing does not prove the update caused the error, but it is valuable evidence for support and helps separate a version mismatch from a local network problem.

4. Set the system clock to automatic synchronization
SEGA specifically recommends automatic time synchronization because an incorrect clock can interfere with online services. Confirm that the computer or console is set to obtain date, time, and time zone automatically, then synchronize it and restart the game.

What to check
- The displayed date is correct.
- The time zone is correct for your location.
- Automatic time or network-provided time is enabled.
- The clock remains correct after a reboot.
This check is quick and reversible. It is worth doing before changing firewall rules or router settings, particularly if other secure online services also show sign-in or certificate errors.
5. Check firewall and antivirus permissions
Red Barrels’ announcement advises checking firewall or antivirus configuration when the game cannot connect to its servers. Security software can block a newly updated executable, launcher, or network component even though the game worked previously.
Use a narrow allow rule
- Open the security product’s firewall or application-control panel.
- Look for blocked or pending entries associated with the legitimate Outlast Trials game and its legitimate launcher.
- Allow those entries on the network profiles you actually use.
- Do not allow unrelated executables, pirated copies, or unknown files merely because their names resemble the game.
- Save the change, restart the launcher and game, and test matchmaking.
If you use third-party antivirus, review its quarantine and network-protection history for a blocked game or launcher file. Restore or allow an item only when you can verify that it belongs to the genuine installation. If temporarily disabling a security feature is part of your product’s documented diagnostic process, keep the test brief, remain offline from unnecessary sites, re-enable protection immediately, and create a specific allow rule instead of leaving protection disabled.
6. Test the local network path
Official connectivity guidance identifies ISP conditions, shared connection speed, and modem/router state as relevant factors. A successful web page load does not guarantee a stable path for an online multiplayer session.
Reduce competing traffic
- Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, video streams, and other game updates on the same connection.
- Ask other household users to stop high-bandwidth activity for one test.
- Close unnecessary network-heavy applications on the gaming device.
Restart and inspect the equipment
- Exit The Outlast Trials completely.
- Power down the modem and router using their normal controls.
- Wait for the equipment to finish shutting down, then restart it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Wait until the connection indicators return to their normal state.
- Restart the PC or console and test the game.
If your setup combines a modem and router in one unit, treat it as a single device. If you have separate units, restart them in the order recommended by the equipment provider. Avoid repeatedly power-cycling equipment while an ISP outage is in progress; check the provider’s status information first.

Compare another connection
When practical, test the same account and device on another trusted connection, such as a wired connection or a permitted mobile hotspot. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a recommendation to use a hotspot for regular play. If the game works on the alternate path, the original router, ISP route, wireless link, or household congestion deserves attention. If it fails identically, concentrate on the game, account, platform, or service instead.
7. Examine NAT and latency without guessing at ports
Nintendo’s matchmaking guide identifies a non-optimal NAT type and high latency as causes of matchmaking timeouts. NAT describes how your router permits inbound and outbound session traffic; latency describes the delay along the network path. A strict or unavailable NAT can prevent a party from connecting even when general internet access appears normal.
Read the available network diagnostics
- Open the built-in network test on your console, or the network diagnostics provided by your PC and router.
- Record the reported NAT status and latency for the affected player.
- Repeat the test at the time the game fails, because network conditions can change.
If NAT is strict, unavailable, or otherwise non-optimal, consult the router or ISP documentation for that exact model and service. Do not guess at port numbers or copy an unverified port-forwarding list. Incorrect forwarding can expose services, break other devices, or fail to address an ISP-level NAT. Escalate to the ISP when the router’s documented options cannot produce a usable NAT status.

Interpret latency carefully
High latency can cause a matchmaking timeout, but a single high reading does not establish a permanent fault. Compare several tests, note whether other household traffic is active, and distinguish a consistently poor result from a brief spike. Keep the recorded values with your support report.
8. Isolate the party before rebuilding it
When friends cannot join one another, determine whether the problem belongs to the group or one player.
- Have each player launch the game and test solo online access.
- Note which players can reach online functions and which cannot.
- Ask the affected player to complete the update, clock, firewall, network, NAT, and latency checks on that platform.
- Once each player can access online features, have everyone leave the current group.
- Rebuild the party from the Sleep Room or lobby and retry the trial.
If every player fails solo access, return to service-status and platform checks. If one player consistently fails while the others succeed, focus on that player’s platform, account session, security software, NAT, or ISP path. This pattern is useful evidence, but it remains a diagnostic inference rather than a rule confirmed by Red Barrels.

9. Platform-focused checks
PC
Confirm that the game and launcher are fully updated, the operating-system clock is automatic, and the legitimate game and launcher entries are permitted by firewall and antivirus controls. Check current system and network drivers, then compare the result on another connection if possible. Record whether the failure occurs before joining the lobby, while searching, or after entering a trial.
PlayStation
Check the console’s service status and installed updates, run its built-in internet test, and record NAT and latency results. Restart the console and network equipment using their normal procedures. If other players can connect, test the affected console account solo before rebuilding the party.
Xbox
Check the platform service status and pending game or system updates, run the console network test, and record NAT and latency information. Pause other household traffic, restart the network equipment, and repeat the test. Compare solo access with party access to determine whether the issue is local to one account or shared by the group.
The exact labels and menus can change with platform software versions. Use the current status and network-test screens shown on your device rather than following an outdated menu path.

Cannot connect even when playing alone
Remember that solo play still requires an internet connection. Check service status, client and system updates, automatic time, firewall or antivirus permissions, and the local network path. Then compare another connection if practical.
Disconnects during a trial
Record the time and whether downloads, streams, or other users were active. Pause competing traffic, inspect the modem/router, and compare wired or alternate-connection results. Repeated disconnects with high latency point toward a network-path investigation rather than a one-time matchmaking retry.
11. Prepare an effective support report
