Most THE FINALS connection problems can be isolated without changing advanced router settings. First check Steam, PlayStation Network or Xbox service status; then update the game, verify the matchmaking region, fully restart the game and network equipment, and test a wired connection. For friends who cannot see or invite one another, use the in-game Embark ID and confirm crossplay and privacy settings. A “Matchmaking cancelled by (Displayname)” message usually means a ranked-party restriction or that the named player disconnected—not that the player deliberately cancelled the queue.
This guide covers PC (Steam and Windows), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Menu names can change slightly between platforms and patches, but the underlying checks are the same.
Start with this 10-minute recovery sequence
Follow these checks in order. They separate a service outage from a local connection, account, party or region problem before you change firewall or port settings.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Check service status. Look at Steam Server Status for PC, or the PlayStation Network/Xbox service-status page for console. If the platform service is degraded, local changes will not restore matchmaking. Steam specifically advises checking its server status first when diagnosing connectivity.
- Install every update. Update THE FINALS and the platform client. On Windows, also install pending Windows updates and graphics or network-adapter driver updates. A client on an older build may fail to join a current session.
- Verify the region. In the game, open
Settings → General → Region → Preferred Region. Leave it on Automatic only when it chooses a sensible nearby region; otherwise select the closest correct region manually. - Close and relaunch completely. Exit THE FINALS rather than leaving it suspended. On console, restart the console instead of using rest mode or instant resume. Reopen the game after the restart.
- Restart the network path. Power-cycle the router and modem according to your ISP’s normal procedure. Wait until the connection is fully back before launching the game again.
- Run one wired test. Connect the PC or console directly to the router with Ethernet. Embark recommends wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi, and Steam recommends a direct wired test to expose wireless or powerline instability.
- Remove competing traffic. Pause game downloads, cloud synchronisation, video streams and large uploads. Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy, then test again. These can change routing or consume the upload capacity needed for a stable session.
- Check security software. Make sure the game and Steam are allowed through the operating-system firewall and any third-party security suite. If the problem occurs only on a work, school or hotel network, ask its administrator whether Steam traffic is filtered.
Keep the result of each test in mind. If the game works on Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, the likely fault is the wireless path rather than THE FINALS servers. If nobody in your party can connect, service status or a current game outage becomes more likely.

Match the symptom to the likely fix
| What you see | Most likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Queue never finds a match or immediately fails | Platform outage, stale client, incorrect region, blocked traffic or unstable connection | Run the recovery sequence, then verify region and firewall access |
| A Steam friend is online but absent from the Social list | Steam friendship not synchronised for THE FINALS, missing Embark ID link, privacy block or stale session | Add the player by Embark ID and restart both game clients |
| “Matchmaking cancelled by (Displayname)” | Ranked-party eligibility restriction, or the named player quit/disconnected | Check party ranks; if eligible, recreate the party after fixing the connection |
| High ping, rubber-banding or packet loss | Party leader is in a distant region, VPN routing, Wi-Fi interference or saturated bandwidth | Have the nearest-region player lead, select a nearby region, and test Ethernet |
| A temporary queue restriction appears after a disconnect | Matchmaking suspension for leaving, crashing or repeatedly failing to load | Wait for the timer to expire and stabilise the connection before queuing again |
| Invites fail only on one network | Firewall, proxy, ISP, school or business-network port filtering | Test another connection and give the documented Steam ports to the network administrator |
Fix Steam invites and cross-platform parties
THE FINALS supports crossplay between PC (Steam and Windows), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Crossplay is enabled by default. Turning it off restricts matchmaking to your own platform and can make queues longer, so leave it enabled when you are trying to join friends on another system.
Add the friend with an Embark ID
- Open THE FINALS and select Social.
- Select Add Friend.
- Enter the other player’s exact Embark ID, then send the request.
- Have the other player accept the request in the Social menu.
- Select the accepted friend and choose Add to Party.
Embark states that being friends on Steam, PlayStation or Xbox does not always add the player inside THE FINALS. The Embark ID route is the supported cross-platform method. An Embark ID is required to play and links platform accounts for cross-progression and cross-platform friends.
Confirm crossplay and privacy controls
- In THE FINALS, open
Settings → Gameplay → Network → Crossplayand ensure it is enabled on both accounts. - Open the Social menu’s Blocked Players list and remove an accidental block.
- On Steam, PlayStation or Xbox, review privacy controls for friend requests, communication and cross-network play. A platform-level restriction can prevent an in-game request from appearing.
- Check that each player is signed into the intended platform and Embark account. A platform account linked to a different Embark ID will not appear under the expected name.
If the friend is online but still missing
Close THE FINALS fully on both systems and launch it again. Do not rely on a suspended console session. After both players return to the main menu, send a fresh Embark ID request rather than repeatedly selecting an old Steam invite. If one player can see the other but cannot add them, compare the exact Embark ID spelling, including any suffix or capitalization shown by the game.

Understand “Matchmaking cancelled by (Displayname)”
Embark documents two common causes for this message. The first is a ranked-party restriction; the second is that the player who started the queue quit or disconnected. The display name identifies the party member associated with the failed queue, not necessarily someone who intentionally pressed Cancel.
Rank restrictions in ranked modes
Diamond or Ruby players cannot queue in a ranked party with players who are Silver or below. If your party contains that combination, matchmaking is cancelled before a match is found. Keep every member inside an allowed rank bracket, or switch the group to an unranked mode. Check every player’s current rank rather than relying on an old screenshot or a rank from a previous season.
When a player disconnected
If the ranks are allowed, treat the message as a connection or client failure. Have the named player complete the recovery sequence above, then disband and recreate the party before trying again. A player who drops during queue or fails to load can trigger the same wording as a manual cancellation.

Lower ping and stop region-related disconnects
The party leader’s location determines the matchmaking region for the entire party. Joining a friend in another country can therefore place everyone on that friend’s nearest server, even when another member has a closer server available. This is the first thing to check when a solo queue is fine but a party session has high latency.

- For a party, have the player nearest to the desired server create the party and start the queue.
A VPN can send traffic through a distant or congested route, while unstable Wi-Fi and background uploads can cause packet loss and rubber-banding even when a speed test looks fast. Disable the VPN for testing, use Ethernet, pause downloads and streaming, and relaunch the game before matchmaking.
Check Windows and console basics
Embark’s PC connection procedure also calls for current Windows updates, a system that meets THE FINALS requirements and the built-in Windows network troubleshooter. Run the troubleshooter from Windows network settings after closing the game, then retry without other bandwidth-heavy applications.

On PlayStation and Xbox, check the platform service status, restart the console and router, confirm the game is current and inspect the console’s NAT type. A strict or unavailable NAT can prevent a party from communicating even when web browsing works. If the NAT remains restricted on a home connection, the router or ISP may need to provide a less restrictive configuration; on a managed network, only the administrator can change it.

Steam publishes the following remote-port ranges for login, downloads, game traffic and Steamworks peer-to-peer features. These are reference values for a firewall or network administrator, not an invitation to open every port on the internet.
| Protocol | Remote ports | Steam function |
|---|---|---|
| TCP and UDP | 27015–27050 | Steam login and download traffic |
| UDP | 27000–27250 | Game traffic |
| UDP | 3478, 4379, 4380 | Steamworks peer-to-peer and voice |
| UDP | 27014–27030 | Steamworks peer-to-peer and voice |
How to use the port information safely
- First allow THE FINALS and Steam through the local firewall and retest. A correctly named application rule is preferable to a broad inbound rule.
- If the issue occurs only at a university, business, hotel or other managed network, provide the administrator with the table and ask whether the remote ranges are blocked.
- Test the same PC on a phone hotspot or another permitted connection. If it works there, the original network is the likely blocker.
- Do not try to remap Steam’s required ports to a custom range. Steam says these ports cannot be remapped; a network administrator must permit the documented ranges or provide an approved alternative path.
Steam’s recommended troubleshooting order is service status, a direct wired test, firewall checks, removal of interfering background applications and investigation of ISP or institutional blocking when the fault is network-specific or time-specific.

Deal with matchmaking suspensions after a disconnect
THE FINALS can temporarily restrict queue access after a player leaves, crashes, disconnects and fails to reconnect, or repeatedly fails to load into matches. This is a matchmaking suspension, not an account ban. The timer expires automatically.
What to do while the timer is active
- Restart the game and the platform once, then read the displayed timer rather than repeatedly attempting to queue.
- On PC, update graphics and network drivers and install the latest game update.
- Stabilise the connection with Ethernet where possible; avoid unstable Wi-Fi, VPN routing and heavy downloads.
- Check that the router, console or PC is not losing connectivity before the timer ends. Repeated failed loads can lead to another restriction.
Do not interpret the suspension as proof that the account has been banned. If the timer has expired but every queue attempt immediately creates a new restriction, investigate the underlying disconnect or crash instead of trying to bypass the timer.
Account for patch and region-selection changes
Server routing behavior can change with updates. Embark’s Update 10.2.0, dated April 9, 2026, fixed an issue in which players outside the EU, US and Asia could be sent to the wrong server region when Automatic selection was used. If a region or ping problem began immediately after a patch, read the current patch notes and support status before changing router settings. A setting that was correct in an earlier build may no longer be the relevant fix.

When a wired connection is worth testing
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic tool because it removes Wi-Fi interference, weak signal coverage and powerline-adapter behavior from the test. It cannot repair a platform outage, an Embark ID mismatch, a ranked-party restriction or a distant server selected by the party leader. Use it to answer a narrow question: does the same account, game and router work reliably when the console or PC is connected directly?
Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep THE FINALS, Steam or the console system, Windows and network drivers current.
- Leave crossplay enabled when your party spans PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
- Keep an accurate Embark ID for each regular teammate instead of depending solely on platform friend lists.
- Choose a nearby preferred region and avoid leading a party from a distant country when low latency matters.
- Use Ethernet for ranked sessions when possible, or play close to a strong 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi-Fi access point with minimal interference.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups and high-bitrate streaming while queuing.
- Allow Steam and THE FINALS through the firewall and remember that managed networks may require an administrator to permit Steam’s documented remote ports.
- If a disconnect causes a suspension, wait for the timer and fix the connection before attempting another match.
These checks isolate the major failure classes: platform outage, outdated client, party or account setup, rank eligibility, server-region choice, local network instability and blocked Steam traffic. Once the symptom changes—for example, invites begin working but ping remains high—stop repeating unrelated fixes and work only on the remaining category.
