Fix THE FINALS by matching the remedy to the symptom: update Windows and hardware drivers for PC crashes, allow shader preloading to finish before troubleshooting stutter, and correct region, network, and background-traffic problems for connection errors. Console crashes usually require a full power cycle, updates, storage checks, and sometimes a reinstall. The steps below separate launch failures, rendering problems, matchmaking errors, high ping, and the Windows KB5121003 driver issue so you do not apply a network fix to a graphics problem or repeatedly restart a normal shader build.

Identify what is actually failing

The timing and visible symptoms usually identify the fault category. Use this table before changing settings.

What you see When it happens Most likely area Start with
The game closes, freezes, or returns to the desktop At launch, during loading, or in a match Drivers, Windows, DirectX, hardware compatibility, corrupted files, or a system-driver conflict PC crash playbook, then the KB5121003 check if the timing matches
Frame pacing feels uneven, with brief freezes or hitching First launch, after an update, after a driver change, or after graphics settings change Shader compilation or graphics workload Let shader preloading reach 100%; then use the stutter steps
You remain on Connecting or matchmaking fails Before a match begins Region selection, service status, router, DNS, VPN, or local network configuration Check region, platform status, router, and Windows network steps
Actions arrive late, players teleport, or a warning icon appears During a match High ping, packet loss, Wi-Fi instability, background traffic, VPN routing, or party-region selection Use Ethernet, stop competing traffic, and verify the party leader’s region

A crash is a process failure; stutter is a frame-delivery problem; and lag or rubber-banding is a network-timing problem. They can occur together, but each needs its own checks.

Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate or eliminate every crash. It establishes whether the system is within the game’s supported baseline.

2. Update every relevant driver, not only the graphics driver

Embark identifies outdated or incompatible drivers as common causes of PC crashes. Check the graphics processing unit first, but also consider the CPU platform, motherboard and BIOS, monitor, Wi-Fi adapter or network card, modem, and connected peripherals. A recent Windows, game, or driver change is useful evidence if the crash began immediately afterward.

  1. Press Windows, type dxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Record the graphics card and Windows version shown on the System and Display tabs.
  2. Install the current driver from the graphics-card manufacturer’s official update utility or support page. Choose a clean-install option when the utility offers one and the problem began after a driver change.
  3. Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support utility for chipset, BIOS, audio, network, and other platform updates. Update monitor, Wi-Fi, modem, controller, and peripheral software when those devices have their own packages.
  4. Install Microsoft’s current DirectX components, then run Windows Update until no further updates are offered.
  5. Restart Windows before testing the game again. Do not judge the result from a session that is still using an old driver or pending update.

If the game crashes only when a particular device is connected, disconnect nonessential peripherals and test once. Reconnect devices one at a time after stability returns.

3. Remove avoidable software conflicts

Close overlays, hardware-monitoring tools, capture utilities, RGB controllers, and CPU- or GPU-intensive applications for a controlled test. This does not prove that an overlay is defective; it simply removes another process from the crash path. Re-enable tools individually so you can identify a repeatable conflict instead of changing several variables at once.

4. Record the crash before contacting support

If updating drivers, DirectX, and Windows does not help, preserve the exact error message or code. Note the operating system, whether the failure occurs at launch, during shader preparation, while loading a map, or in a match, and which driver or system updates immediately preceded it. Those details let support distinguish a local configuration problem from a game or platform defect.

Investigate the KB5121003-specific crash

Embark’s notice dated August 17, 2026 links crashes affecting some players after Windows update KB5121003 to changes involving inpoutx64.sys. Use the following workaround only when your crash began in that update’s timeframe and the symptoms fit; it is not a general crash remedy.

Before changing a system driver

  • Create a restore point or another recoverable backup and make sure you have administrator access.
  • Confirm that KB5121003 and the associated crash timing are relevant to your machine.
  • Do not remove unrelated drivers. If the failure does not match this pattern, return to the general PC crash steps and contact official support.

Documented removal procedure

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run sc stop inpoutx64.
  3. Run sc delete inpoutx64.
  4. In File Explorer, open C:WindowsSystem32drivers and delete inpoutx64.sys.
  5. If instructed by the current Embark guidance and you understand the registry risk, remove the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesinpoutx64 key.
  6. Restart Windows and test THE FINALS.

This procedure changes a kernel-level driver and registry service entry. If the commands report that the service or file is missing, stop rather than deleting other files. If crashes continue, provide Embark with the update number, the exact error, and what each command reported.

Stop stuttering and understand shader preloading

Why the preloading screen appears

The message Preloading Shaders 0–100% is a normal startup process. THE FINALS prepares shader data for lighting, shadows, particles, and destruction effects, then stores a local graphics cache. Embark says this preparation helps prevent frame drops, texture problems, stuttering, and freezes in a game with large-scale destruction and dynamic lighting. That explanation is an official rationale, not an independent frame-rate measurement.

Preloading can take several minutes after the first launch, a game update, a graphics-driver update, a graphics-setting change, or a cleared shader cache. Let the percentage advance and avoid repeatedly closing the game: each interruption can make the process start again.

When preloading is genuinely stuck

Treat it as stuck when the percentage has not changed for roughly 10–20 minutes, the computer shows no meaningful CPU or disk activity from the game, or Windows reports that the application is not responding. Then:

  1. Close the game once and restart it.
  2. Exit CPU- and GPU-heavy applications, recording tools, overlays, and browser tabs before relaunching.
  3. Install the current graphics driver and finish any pending Windows or game update.
  4. Allow the entire preloading pass to complete after the update; do not cancel it because it appears slower than the previous launch.

If the game reaches the menu but stutters in matches, separate shader work from network lag. A smooth ping graph does not eliminate a graphics bottleneck, and a stable frame rate does not eliminate packet loss.

Additional stutter checks after shaders finish

  • Use the recommended hardware table as a baseline, particularly the 12 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended memory figures.
  • Return recently changed graphics settings to their prior values and test one change at a time.
  • Keep adequate free storage for the game and its local cache.
  • Test without overlays or background capture, then restore them individually if desired.
  • Record whether hitching occurs only during the first match after startup or throughout every match; that timing is useful when escalating.

Fix THE FINALS connection errors on PC

1. Select the correct matchmaking region

Open Settings → Gameplay → Region and choose the region that matches your location. When you join a party, the party leader’s location determines the matchmaking region for the group. A friend in another region can therefore create high latency even when your own connection is otherwise healthy.

2. Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi

Embark states: “A wired (Ethernet) connection is recommended over Wi-Fi.” Connect the gaming PC directly to the router with Ethernet; a Cat6 cable is a suitable physical option for a normal home gigabit connection. This is aimed at wireless instability, packet loss, and latency variation, not at correcting a graphics crash.

3. Remove competing traffic and routing detours

  • Pause game downloads, cloud synchronization, video streaming, and other large transfers while playing.
  • Temporarily disable Windows peer-to-peer Delivery Optimization if it is consuming bandwidth during matches.
  • Disconnect VPNs and proxies. They can add a distant route or prevent matchmaking from using the best path.
  • Restart the router, wait for it to reconnect fully, and then restart the game before matchmaking.

4. Run Windows network repairs

  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Open Windows network settings and run the built-in network troubleshooter.
  3. If the problem persists, set a reliable public DNS service in the active adapter’s IPv4 settings. The appropriate addresses depend on the DNS provider you choose.
  4. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run, one line at a time:
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
  5. Restart Windows and test matchmaking again.

If you are stuck on Connecting on a console, also check the PlayStation Network or Xbox Network status page and restart the router. A platform outage cannot be repaired by changing PC DNS settings.

Reduce high ping, lag, and rubber-banding

High ping means your actions reach the server late; rubber-banding is the visible correction when the server and your client disagree about position. Common causes include joining a friend in another region, unstable Wi-Fi, background streaming or downloads, VPN routing, and an ISP path problem.

  1. Ask who is party leader and confirm that the leader is in the intended matchmaking region.
  2. Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet. If Ethernet is impossible, move closer to the access point, use a less congested band, and avoid heavy wireless traffic during the test.
  3. Stop streaming, downloads, cloud backups, and Delivery Optimization.
  4. Disconnect VPNs and proxies, restart the router, then restart THE FINALS before searching again.
  5. Compare a solo match with a party match. If only the party session lags, the party region is a stronger suspect than the game client.

Do not infer a crash from a frozen character or a disconnected match alone. If Windows remains responsive and the game returns to the menu after a network warning, follow the network path; if the process closes or Windows reports an application failure, follow the crash path.

Fix crashes and launch failures on PlayStation or Xbox

Full power-cycle procedure

  1. Close THE FINALS completely rather than leaving it suspended.
  2. Shut the console down; do not use rest or sleep mode for this test.
  3. Unplug the console’s power cable for at least 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect power, start the console, and launch the game.

Update and storage checks

  • Install every available console-system update.
  • Install the latest THE FINALS update.
  • Verify that the internal drive has sufficient free space for updates and temporary files.
  • Avoid launching immediately after waking from rest or sleep; perform a fresh boot instead.
  • If crashes continue, uninstall and reinstall the game.

For a Connecting failure, check the status of the relevant PlayStation or Xbox network before reinstalling. An online-service outage will survive a reinstall.

A practical order of operations

Use this sequence when the symptom is unclear or several problems appeared together.

  1. Write down the exact message, error code, and point of failure.
  2. Check whether the machine or console meets the applicable requirements and has free storage.
  3. Install platform, game, Windows, DirectX, and hardware-driver updates as applicable.
  4. For PC graphics problems, complete shader preloading once without repeatedly closing the game.
  5. For matchmaking or in-match lag, verify region, party leader, Ethernet, router, VPN, and background traffic.
  6. For a console crash, perform the full power cycle before reinstalling.
  7. Only use the inpoutx64.sys removal procedure when the KB5121003 timing and symptoms match Embark’s notice.
  8. Retest after each major change so the result identifies the cause.
