A blank Task Manager does not necessarily mean Windows has no running processes. In Windows 11, a process list may be populated but invisible because its columns are hidden or set to zero width; a blank Performance page is a separate issue involving Windows performance data sources.
First confirm that Task Manager is in its full view, then identify which page is blank. Restore columns for an empty process list, and use the separate Performance troubleshooting only if that page is affected.
1. Open the full Task Manager view
Task Manager may open in a condensed view that shows only a short list of applications. Select More details at the bottom to display the full interface.
On current Windows 11 releases, the full interface normally has a navigation sidebar. Select Processes for apps and background processes, or Details for the detailed list of running processes.

If the full interface is visible but the list is empty, continue below. Do not assume no processes are running.
2. Fix a blank Processes or Details list by restoring columns
A Windows 11 process list can appear completely blank when its visible columns have been hidden or assigned a width of zero. You may still see the list area or a scrollbar even though process names are not visible.
Make a zero-width column visible
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details or Processes from the sidebar.
- Move the pointer slowly across the top row where the column headers should be. Look for it to change into a horizontal resize cursor.
- At a vertical column boundary, drag to the right to widen the column.
- Check whether process names and rows reappear.
This is especially worth checking if the page has a scrollbar but looks empty. A blank list does not prove that Windows has stopped all processes.
Re-enable hidden columns
- Right-click a visible column header, such as Name, PID, or Status.
- Select Select columns.
- Select the columns you want to display, especially the process-name column.
- Select OK, then widen any column that is still too narrow to read.
Zero-width columns have been reported in both the Details and Services views, including after Windows 11 installations and updates. Check the layout before repairing system files or changing the registry.

3. Determine whether only Task Manager is affected
Open another process-related tool to help distinguish a Task Manager display problem from a wider Windows issue. Press Win + R, enter resmon, and press Enter to open Resource Monitor. You can also open services.msc to check whether Windows services are listed.

Task Manager uses different Windows data sources for process lists and Performance charts. One page can work while another is blank.
4. Restart Windows Explorer only if the Windows shell is also affected
Restart Explorer when the desktop, taskbar, or File Explorer has disappeared, or when Windows shows a blank or black screen with a visible pointer. It is not a general fix for a process list whose columns are invisible.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer in the process list.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Wait for the taskbar and desktop to reload, then open Task Manager again.
If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.

If the whole display is blank or graphics are malfunctioning, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief screen flicker usually indicates that Windows accepted the shortcut.
5. Repair Windows system files
Use repair commands if multiple Windows tools are malfunctioning, Task Manager remains broken after fixing its columns, or Windows reports corrupted system files. Microsoft’s supported order is DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC).
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to finish.
- After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow.
- Let SFC reach 100 percent. Do not close Command Prompt or restart the PC while the scan is running.
- Restart Windows and check Task Manager again.
DISM repairs the currently running Windows image. SFC checks protected system files and replaces corrupted files when possible. Running SFC alone is not the same as repairing the component store, particularly when SFC reports that it could not repair some files.
6. Troubleshoot a blank Performance page
If Processes and Details show data but Performance is blank, focus on performance data rather than column widths. A Microsoft Community discussion associated the symptom with damaged performance-counter registrations or WMI. These are reported troubleshooting measures, not a universal Microsoft diagnosis for every blank Performance page.

Rebuild performance-counter registrations
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run lodctr /R.
- Allow the command to complete, then restart Windows and test Task Manager.
On 64-bit Windows, the command may report that it restored performance-counter settings from a system backup.
Restart Windows Management Instrumentation
- Press Win + R.
- Enter services.msc and press Enter.
- Find Windows Management Instrumentation.
- Right-click it and select Restart. If Restart is unavailable, stop and start the service only if Windows permits it and you understand that dependent services may also be affected.
Some community troubleshooting reports also suggest running winmgmt /salvagerepository from an elevated Command Prompt. It attempts to salvage the WMI repository; it is not a required fix for a blank Details list.

If the problem began immediately after an update, restart the computer fully. Then open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates.
Updates can change Task Manager’s selected columns or their widths. If the process list is blank but the rest of Task Manager works, check the column-width steps before attempting more invasive repairs.

What not to do first
- Do not conclude that no processes are running. Hidden or zero-width columns can conceal a populated list.
- Do not rely blindly on old menu instructions. Windows 11 may use the redesigned sidebar rather than the classic View or Options menus found in older guides.
- Do not restart Explorer as a universal Task Manager repair. Use it for a missing desktop, taskbar, or Explorer shell.
- Do not edit the registry before checking columns. The visible failure may be a damaged Task Manager layout.
- Do not stop SFC early. The scan must reach 100 percent to complete.
Recommended order of fixes
- Select More details if Task Manager is condensed.
- Identify whether Processes, Details, Services, or Performance is blank.
- For a blank list, widen a hidden column and use Select columns.
- Restart Explorer only if the desktop or taskbar is also missing.
- For a blank Performance page, consider restarting WMI or rebuilding counters with lodctr /R.
- Run DISM, then sfc /scannow, if the problem affects multiple Windows components or persists after view-specific fixes.
FAQ
Why is Task Manager blank even though programs are running?
The process columns may be hidden or set to zero width. Right-click a column header, choose Select columns, re-enable the process-name column, and widen a column by dragging its boundary.
Why is only the Performance page blank?
The Performance page uses separate Windows performance data sources from the Processes and Details lists. Broken performance-counter registrations or WMI are reported possible causes, but neither is a universal diagnosis.
Will restarting Windows Explorer fix a blank Task Manager?
Only when the surrounding Windows shell is also affected, such as a missing taskbar, desktop, or File Explorer window. It is not the normal fix for a process list hidden by zero-width columns.
Should I run SFC or DISM first?
Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth first, then run sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt. Allow SFC to reach 100 percent.

Current Windows 11 Task Manager uses a navigation sidebar and a redesigned interface. Older instructions referring to a classic menu bar, View, or Options may not apply to your version.
The Bottom Line
Start by identifying the blank view. For an empty Processes, Details, or Services list, restore hidden or zero-width columns before repairing Windows. Use Explorer restart for a broken desktop, performance-counter or WMI troubleshooting for a blank Performance page, and DISM followed by SFC when the evidence points to damaged Windows components.
