If Tales of Eternia Remastered crashes, ignores a controller, scrolls through menus, or plays no voices, work through the checks in this order: install the newest game update, confirm your PC meets the Steam requirements, update Windows and the graphics driver, verify the Steam files, disconnect competing input devices, test Steam Input deliberately, and then inspect the game’s audio and voice settings. This sequence separates a damaged installation or outdated system from a controller, output-device, or game-side problem without assuming that one universal fix exists.

The Steam release is dated October 15, 2026. Bandai Namco’s October 16 launch notice identifies version 2.0.0 as the current launch update and asks players to apply the latest update before playing. That notice lists font, carryover-title, and text fixes, but does not claim a crash, controller, or missing-audio fix, so keep your expectations realistic while testing.

  1. Close the game, let Steam finish every pending download, and restart Steam.
  2. Confirm that your PC meets the listed minimums: Windows 11, DirectX 12, 4 GB of RAM, and at least a GTX 650 Ti, Radeon HD 7770, or Intel Arc A310-class GPU.
  3. Install pending Windows updates and the newest driver available for your graphics card.
  4. In Steam, use the game’s file-verification command.
  5. Disconnect other gamepads, wheels, fight sticks, USB adapters, and virtual-controller utilities.
  6. Test the remaining controller in the game’s Menu > Custom > Button Settings, then repeat the test after changing only the Steam Input state.
  7. For sound problems, inspect Master Volume, SE Volume, Voice Volume, sample playback, and Voice Language, then check Windows’ selected output device.

If a symptom remains after these steps, record the exact conditions instead of repeating random changes. The official material currently available does not establish a universal fix for crashes, continuous menu scrolling, or missing audio.

What is officially known about the PC release

Steam lists Tales of Eternia Remastered with Full Controller Support and explicit Xbox and PlayStation controller support. That means a controller failure after basic isolation should be treated as a possible game, driver, connection, or device conflict—not automatically as unsupported hardware.

Language and audio listing Ten interface-language entries; English and Japanese include full audio, while the other listed languages provide interface and subtitles A language selection that changes text but not spoken audio may be expected for a non-audio language.

Step 1: Install the current update before testing

Bandai Namco’s launch notice says to apply the latest update before playing. In Steam, wait for the download to finish, close the game completely, and restart the Steam client so the installed build is re-read. On a console, allow the platform’s update process to complete before launching.

Check the title-screen or Steam build information after restarting and note the version shown. The launch materials identify version 2.0.0, but a later hotfix could supersede it. Do not assume that version 2.0.0 fixes a particular crash or audio symptom: its published changes are font style, carryover Titles, and text bug fixes.

Step 2: Check system requirements and system software

Confirm the hardware and operating system

Open Windows’ system information and compare the edition, installed memory, and GPU with Steam’s minimum listing. Windows 11 and DirectX 12 are specifically listed. If your machine falls below any of those requirements, troubleshooting cannot turn it into a supported configuration; upgrade or use a system that meets the minimums before drawing conclusions from a crash.

Apply Windows updates

Install all pending Windows updates, restart, and test the game once. This is part of SEGA’s general troubleshooting sequence for crashes, distorted audio, and graphics glitches. It is general PC guidance, not a diagnosis that Windows updating alone resolves an Eternia problem.

Update the graphics driver

Install the current driver supplied for your GPU model, restart Windows, and test again. Avoid changing several graphics variables at once: if the crash disappears, you need to know whether the driver update—not an unrelated setting—changed the result. Record the GPU model and driver date for any support report.

Step 3: Verify the Steam installation

Use Steam’s file-verification function before deleting or reinstalling the game. The usual path is Library > right-click Tales of Eternia Remastered > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish, allow Steam to reacquire any files it reports, restart Steam, and reproduce the original symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification is a focused check for an incomplete or altered installation. It does not repair a controller driver, change Windows’ audio output, or prove that the game itself is free of a software defect. If verification finds nothing and the same reproducible crash remains, note that result before considering a full reinstall.

Step 4: Isolate controller input

Remove competing devices

Exit the game and unplug every input device except the one you intend to test. Include a second Xbox or PlayStation pad, steering wheel, fight stick, accessibility device, USB wireless receiver, and any virtual-controller or remapping utility. Bluetooth can leave a previously paired pad active even when it is not in your hands, so turn that device off during the first test.

Reconnect one controller, confirm that Steam shows that single device, and launch the game. This creates a clean baseline. If the problem disappears, reconnect devices one at a time until the conflict returns; the last change is useful evidence even though it does not prove which driver or layer is at fault.

Check the game’s button settings

Open Menu > Custom > Button Settings. Confirm that the displayed actions correspond to the physical buttons you press and test navigation without touching the stick. The Steam update list documents this menu as the in-game place to inspect button assignments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a controller that scrolls continuously, first remove every other input source and test again. Then check whether the menu still moves when your hands are off the controller. If it stops after disconnecting another pad or virtual device, the extra input was part of the trigger. If it continues with one known-good controller, record the controller model, connection type, and whether the behavior occurs in menus only or during gameplay; the available official pages do not identify a universal dead-zone or scrolling fix.

Compare wired and Bluetooth connections

Connection test Procedure What the result tells you
Wired Turn off Bluetooth, connect the controller directly to the PC with a known-good USB cable, and test with no other pad attached. If wired works while Bluetooth fails, investigate pairing, wireless interference, or the Bluetooth driver rather than assuming the game lacks controller support.
Bluetooth Disconnect the cable, pair only the intended controller, confirm Steam sees it, and repeat the same in-game test. If both methods fail identically, a broader game, driver, mapping, or device issue is more plausible than a single wireless link problem.

A replacement controller can help only when the existing controller or cable is actually faulty. Buying a new pad does not repair a game-side bug, a Steam Input conflict, or an incorrect Windows output setting.

Step 5: Test Steam Input as a controlled experiment

Steam Input adds an input layer between Steam and the game. The official pages available for this title do not publish a Tales-specific Steam Input workaround, so treat the setting as a diagnostic comparison rather than a guaranteed cure.

  1. Close the game.
  2. Change only the game’s Steam Input setting in Steam’s controller properties. Note whether you started with the default, enabled, or disabled state.
  3. Restart Steam after the change.
  4. Reconnect the single controller and open Menu > Custom > Button Settings.
  5. Repeat the same navigation and button tests you used in the first run.
  6. Restore the original state if the change makes behavior worse, then record which state produced which result.

Do not combine a Steam Input change with a new remapping profile, a second controller, and a driver update in the same test. One-variable comparisons make a support report actionable and prevent a temporary change from being mistaken for a confirmed fix.

Step 6: Fix missing sound and voice audio

Separate total silence from missing voices

First determine whether all audio is absent or only spoken dialogue. Effects and music can work while voice audio is muted, routed differently, or set to another language. A complete lack of sound points first to volume controls or Windows’ output path; missing dialogue requires the voice-specific checks below.

Inspect the in-game audio controls

Open Menu > Custom and check these controls:

  • Master Volume: make sure overall output is not muted or set to zero.
  • SE Volume: raise it and use the documented sample playback to confirm sound effects are being generated.
  • Voice Volume: raise it and use its sample playback to distinguish a voice-channel setting from a general audio failure.
  • Voice Language: select the intended English or Japanese track, then test a scene with known dialogue.

The update list specifically documents sample playback for SE and Voice volumes, making those samples more useful than guessing from one quiet scene. Bandai Namco also advertises switches between remastered and original graphics and sound effects, plus English and Japanese voice acting. Try the graphics and sound-effects presentation options deliberately and note whether the symptom changes; do not assume that switching presentation modes repairs a missing voice track.

Check Windows’ output route

With the game running, open Windows’ sound output selector and choose the speakers or headphones you actually want to use. A monitor over HDMI, a USB headset, Bluetooth headphones, and a controller headset jack can appear as separate outputs. Test speakers or headphones connected directly to the PC to remove the controller’s audio route from the first diagnosis.

Interpret language availability correctly

Steam lists ten interface-language entries. English and Japanese include full audio; the other listed languages provide interface and subtitles. If the interface is set to a language without listed full audio, spoken dialogue may remain in an available voice language while menus and subtitles follow the selected interface language. Use Voice Language to choose English or Japanese when you need to test a supported voice track.

Diagnose crashes by when they occur

Crash before the game reaches the menu

  1. Install the newest update and restart Steam.
  2. Confirm Windows 11, DirectX 12, memory, and GPU requirements.
  3. Install Windows and graphics-driver updates.
  4. Verify Steam files.
  5. Disconnect every extra controller and virtual input tool.
  6. Retry with the simplest hardware setup and record any error text.

This order follows the documented general PC sequence and removes common variables without claiming that any single step is a Tales-specific fix.

Crash while loading or entering a scene

Record the exact location: title screen, save selection, a particular map, or a battle transition. Test once after verification and once after the system updates, keeping the save, settings, and controller setup unchanged. A crash tied to one reproducible location is more useful to support than “it crashes sometimes,” even when no official cause has been published.

Crash after changing controller or audio settings

Return to the last known configuration, restart Steam, and repeat the same action. Note whether the crash follows a Steam Input state, a Bluetooth connection, a language change, or an audio-output switch. Do not infer that the changed setting caused the crash unless the behavior is repeatable.

When reinstalling is justified

Reinstall only after the update, requirements, system software, controller isolation, audio checks, and Steam verification have been completed. A reinstall can replace a damaged installation, but it will not correct an incompatible Windows version, a graphics driver, a Bluetooth pairing problem, a competing virtual controller, or an output device selected by Windows. Preserve your saved-game information according to the platform’s normal backup options before removing the installation.

Build a useful support report

If the symptom persists, send a reproducible record rather than a list of guesses. Include:

  • Platform and storefront, such as Steam PC or a named console.
  • Game version shown after updating, including whether the launcher reports version 2.0.0 or a later build.
  • Operating-system edition, DirectX version, GPU model, driver date, and installed RAM for PC.
  • Controller model, wired or Bluetooth connection, and whether every other input device was disconnected.
  • Steam Input state used during the test.
  • Audio output device, whether direct PC speakers or headphones were tested, and whether effects, voices, or all sound were missing.
  • Voice Language and the relevant Master, SE, and Voice volume settings.
  • Exact crash location, message, or sequence of actions, plus the result of Steam file verification.

This information lets support distinguish a hardware or driver conflict from a reproducible game behavior. Steam Community posts show that players have reported controller trouble, but those reports do not establish how common the issue is or what causes it.

What the current evidence does—and does not—prove

The title has documented full controller support, in-game button and audio controls, English and Japanese voice options, and a launch update. Those facts justify checking the listed settings and isolating the input and output paths. They do not prove a universal fix for crashes, continuous menu scrolling, or missing audio. No independent prevalence statistic for those symptoms is published in the available official material, and a later Bandai Namco hotfix could change the recommended sequence.

Use the update-and-isolation workflow first, keep one variable constant in each test, and preserve the details of any failure that survives it. That is the most reliable way to determine whether your particular problem is an installation, system-software, connection, routing, or game-side issue.
