If Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun II stutters, crashes, or ignores a controller on PC, start with the official requirements and a clean software baseline before changing advanced settings. The launch notice identified frame-rate drops in the Nurgle Nightmare campaign and a fatal launch error on some Intel Core Ultra systems; the developer said hotfixes were planned. Controller problems are usually isolated by testing USB, Bluetooth, Windows detection, and Steam Input separately.
This guide gives a reversible, evidence-based order of operations. It distinguishes confirmed launch issues from general PC troubleshooting, avoids promising a particular FPS gain, and explains what information to send to support if the fault survives the checklist.
What the symptoms usually mean
Different symptoms point to different layers of the PC. A short pause only when a level first loads is not diagnosed the same way as repeated hitching during combat, an immediate desktop crash, or a controller that works in Windows but not in the game. Write down when the problem occurs before changing anything; that record prevents you from losing the clue that identifies the failing layer.

| Symptom | First suspects | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| Brief or repeated pauses during play | Hardware below the target, driver state, overlays, or a patch-specific performance bug | Check requirements, update the graphics driver, disable overlays, then test a conservative preset |
| Crash before the main menu | Corrupt files, driver or overlay conflict, or the Intel Core Ultra launch issue | Verify the Steam installation and check the processor model against the developer’s notice |
| Crash only in Nurgle Nightmare | The FPS-drop issue reported at launch or a campaign-specific asset problem | Check the latest game patch before editing configuration files |
| Controller works in Windows but not in the game | Steam Input mapping, duplicate virtual devices, or an incorrect active device | Test USB, then compare Steam Input enabled and disabled |
| Controller disconnects or feels delayed | Bluetooth interference, cable or port problems, or competing input software | Use a direct USB connection and remove other controllers while testing |
The Steam store listing reported 94% positive reviews from 417 reviews when checked in 2026. That aggregate does not establish a universal performance level or rule out hardware-specific faults; it only provides launch-era context.

Check the official PC target first
Before adjusting graphics or reinstalling drivers, compare the computer with the game’s published minimum. The Steam listing specifies a 64-bit edition of Windows 10 or 11, 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, 13 GB of storage, and the following processor and graphics targets.
| Component | Published minimum | What a mismatch tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit | A 32-bit installation or unsupported older release is outside the stated target. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-8600K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Lower-tier or heavily throttled CPUs can produce uneven frame delivery even when average FPS appears acceptable. |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | Systems at or below this amount may page to disk when other programs are open. |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980, AMD Radeon R9 Fury, or Intel Arc A580 | A weaker GPU is not a settings problem that can be guaranteed to fix; lower visual settings are only an experiment. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | Confirm the installed Windows and driver stack can initialize DirectX 12. |
| Storage | 13 GB | This is the listed installation requirement, not a promise that any drive will deliver identical streaming performance. |
The 13 GB figure is the store’s stated minimum. Keep additional free space for Windows, shader caches, updates, and normal drive operation, but do not treat buying an SSD as a proven Boltgun II stutter cure. Consider a replacement drive only when the current drive is failing, reporting errors, or nearly full.
Build a clean software baseline
1. Update Windows and the graphics driver
- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and wait for the desktop to finish any post-update work.
- Download the current driver directly from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel. Select the driver for the exact GPU model and Windows edition; do not use a driver intended for a different card.
- Restart again. A driver installer that completes without a reboot can still leave the game using the previous graphics components until Windows starts fresh.
Record the driver version before and after the update. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, a rollback to the previously known-good version is a reasonable diagnostic step; it is reversible and provides stronger evidence than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
2. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and go to the Library.
- Right-click Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun II, choose Properties, then open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and allow the process to finish.
- Launch the game again without adding mods or configuration edits. If Steam reacquires files, test before changing graphics.
Verification replaces missing or altered installation files; it does not repair a Windows driver, a failing disk, or a game-code defect. If verification reports repeated corruption, investigate the drive and Steam library location rather than treating the result as a one-time fix.

3. Disable overlays and capture tools temporarily
Turn off Steam’s in-game overlay and any GPU, chat, recording, frame-counter, or hardware-monitoring overlay for one test session. Close capture software completely, not merely its on-screen widget. These programs insert an extra layer between the game and the display or input device, so a clean launch helps separate a game fault from an integration conflict. Restore them one at a time after the game is stable; that identifies the conflicting program without permanently sacrificing a feature you use.
4. Reboot and test one variable at a time
After updates, verification, and overlay changes, reboot before drawing conclusions. Keep a short log with the date, game build, driver version, graphics preset, and exact location of the hitch or crash. Change only one setting between tests. Simultaneous changes make it impossible to tell which action helped or harmed.
Reduce and classify stutter
Use a conservative preset as a diagnostic
Select the game’s conservative or low graphics preset, apply it, and restart if the game requests one. This is not a claim that low settings permanently solve every hitch; it is a controlled test. If stutter becomes less frequent, GPU load, video memory, or a particular effect is implicated. If the pattern is unchanged, look harder at drivers, overlays, CPU load, storage errors, or a patch-specific issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not alter several advanced options at once. Test resolution or resolution scale first, then individual expensive effects such as shadows or volumetric quality if the game exposes them. Keep a written before-and-after note. Test the same area for a comparable duration, and distinguish:

- Menus: a hitch here points toward overlays, input polling, or a broader desktop conflict rather than scene rendering.
- Loading transitions: pauses may reflect asset or shader compilation and should be compared across repeated launches.
- Gameplay traversal: repeated hitches in one campaign area can indicate streaming or a game-specific bug.
- Combat effects: a drop only during heavy effects suggests render workload, while a constant uneven cadence suggests a wider scheduling or driver issue.
No independent benchmark establishes a guaranteed FPS improvement for a particular setting, SSD, or driver utility. Treat every change as a diagnosis, not a promise.
Handle the two launch issues reported by the developer
Nurgle Nightmare frame-rate drops
Auroch Digital’s launch communication reported FPS drops in the Nurgle Nightmare campaign and said a hotfix was planned. The final status of every planned fix is not established here, so check the newest patch notes or developer update before applying community configuration edits. First reproduce the problem after updating the game, then test the conservative preset and disabled overlays described above. Note the mission, checkpoint, graphics settings, and whether the drop occurs during traversal, combat, or a scripted event. This information helps distinguish a resolved patch issue from a local configuration problem.
Fatal launch errors on Intel Core Ultra hardware
The same launch notice identified a fatal launch error affecting some Intel Core Ultra processors. If the game closes before the menu, identify the exact CPU model in Windows’ System Information or Task Manager and compare it with that hardware class. Install the latest game update, restart, and test with overlays disabled. Do not assume every Intel Core Ultra system is affected, and do not infer that a processor replacement is required. If the error persists, preserve the exact message and include the CPU model in a support report.
The developer’s announcement acknowledged, “No launch is perfect, and we have seen a couple of bugs cropping up via our bug report form and in the Steam forums.” That statement is an acknowledgement of launch reports, not a guarantee that a particular workaround applies to your machine.

Fix controller detection and mapping
Start with a wired USB test
- Disconnect other gamepads, wheels, flight sticks, and virtual-controller software.
- Connect the controller directly to a USB port on the computer, avoiding a hub for the first test.
- Open Windows’ game-controller or Bluetooth-and-devices settings and confirm that the device appears and its buttons respond.
- Start Boltgun II and test in the main menu, then in a safe gameplay area.
USB provides a stable baseline because it removes radio interference, battery state, and pairing from the diagnosis. If the controller fails even in Windows, the game is not yet the primary suspect: try another cable or port and test the device with another application.
Then test Bluetooth
- Close the game before changing the connection method.
- Remove stale pairings in Windows, charge the controller, and pair it again.
- Keep the controller near the PC and temporarily disable other Bluetooth devices that could compete for bandwidth.
- Launch the game and compare response, disconnects, and button layout with the USB result.
A controller that works over USB but not Bluetooth points to pairing, radio, power-management, or interference issues. A failure in both modes points back toward Windows detection, duplicate devices, Steam Input, or the game itself.
Check Steam Input in both states
Focus’s PC and Steam guidance explicitly lists disabling Steam Input as a troubleshooting action. Steam Input can translate a controller into a layout the game understands, but it can also conflict with a game’s native support or with another virtual device. Test both states rather than assuming one is universally correct.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- In Steam, open the game’s Library page, choose the controller icon or Properties, and open the controller settings.
- Set Steam Input to Disable, launch the game, and test every important control.
- If the controller is not detected or the layout is wrong, return to the same menu, enable Steam Input, and test again.
- Keep the state that produces stable detection and correct prompts, and record it in your troubleshooting notes.
| Input path | When it helps | Trade-off | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native game support | Cleanest path when the controller is recognized correctly | Offers fewer remapping options | Supported by the Steam listing’s full controller-support claim |
| Steam Input enabled | Useful when translation or remapping is needed | Adds an input layer that can conflict with native handling | Steam platform feature; test result is machine-specific |
| Steam Input disabled | Removes that translation layer for diagnosis | Some devices or layouts may no longer be recognized | Listed as a troubleshooting action in Focus’s PC/Steam guidance |
| USB connection | Best isolation baseline for detection and latency | Requires a cable and limits movement | General diagnostic practice, not a guaranteed permanent fix |
| Bluetooth connection | Convenient wireless play after pairing is stable | Subject to pairing, battery, and interference variables | General diagnostic practice, not a guaranteed permanent fix |
Remove duplicate virtual controllers
Remapping utilities, accessibility tools, remote-play software, and other gamepads can create multiple logical devices. Close or uninstall them temporarily, then reconnect only the controller you are testing. If button prompts change, the game may be receiving input from a different device than the one in your hands. Reintroduce other devices one at a time after the correct controller path is confirmed.

If your existing pad has a hardware fault, a replacement PC controller such as an Xbox Wireless Controller can be tested after the USB and Bluetooth checks above. Treat that as an isolation step, not evidence that a particular controller model fixes Boltgun II for everyone.

| Action | Reversibility | Use it when | What to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change a graphics preset or one option | Immediate; restore the previous value | Stutter changes with scene load or effects | Preset, option, location, and repeatability |
| Disable an overlay or capture tool | Immediate; re-enable after testing | Crashes or hitches coincide with injected overlays | Which tool was closed and whether the crash returned |
| Verify files | Low risk; Steam restores files | Missing, altered, or repeatedly crashing game assets are suspected | Verification result and any files reacquired |
| Roll back a graphics driver | Reversible with a later reinstall | The issue began directly after a driver update | Old and new driver versions |
| Edit community configuration files | Variable; may be hard to undo | Only after official patches and basic tests are exhausted | Backups and every changed line |
Prefer the first four rows. Configuration edits copied from forums can mask the original problem, become invalid after a patch, or create a new crash. Back up any file before editing and restore it if the symptom changes in an unrelated way.
When the problem may be hardware or Windows
If other demanding games also crash, Windows reports display-driver resets, or the controller disappears outside Boltgun II, widen the investigation. Check Windows Event Viewer for the time of the failure, inspect Device Manager for warning icons, and test the controller on another computer if available. Repeated file corruption, unexplained disconnects, or a drive that reports errors should be treated as hardware or operating-system faults rather than game settings.

Do not infer a hardware failure from one crash. A single crash after an update can be a transient software conflict; a repeatable crash at the same location after a clean baseline is stronger evidence of a game or content-specific defect. Capture the pattern before reinstalling Windows or replacing components.
What to send to support
If the workflow does not resolve the issue, submit a concise report through Auroch Digital’s current support or bug-report channel. Include:
- Exact error text, including capitalization and numbers.
- Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU model, especially whether it is an Intel Core Ultra model.
- GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- Installed RAM and free storage space.
- Game version or patch number and the date of the test.
- Mission, checkpoint, menu, loading screen, or combat location where the fault occurs.
- Whether Steam file verification changed anything.
- Which overlays and capture tools were disabled.
- For controllers: model, USB or Bluetooth connection, Windows detection result, Steam Input state, and any other connected devices.
- A short reproduction sequence and whether the problem occurs every time or intermittently.
A report that includes the exact hardware and reproduction path is more actionable than “it stutters.” Keep the original error screenshot or crash log if the support form accepts attachments, and avoid deleting files before support has identified what it needs.
Bottom line
Use this order: meet the published PC target, update Windows and the GPU driver, verify the Steam files, disable overlays, and test a conservative preset one change at a time. Treat Nurgle Nightmare drops and Intel Core Ultra launch failures as potential game-side issues and check the latest hotfix before applying unofficial edits. For controllers, prove Windows detection with USB, compare Bluetooth, remove duplicate devices, and test Steam Input enabled and disabled. If the fault remains, a precise hardware, driver, location, and reproduction report is the fastest path to a fix.
