Most stutter, crash, and controller failures in open-world racers are solved faster by isolating the cause than by changing every graphics option. First record your platform, game build, hardware, drivers, controller and exact trigger. Then update the game, Windows, GPU, controller firmware and chipset or Bluetooth drivers; verify the installation; test the controller over a different connection; and only then tune frame rate and streaming-heavy settings one change at a time.

This workflow is grounded in documented Forza Horizon 5 support cases, but it also applies as a diagnostic method to other open-world racing games. Menus, requirements and fixes differ by title and version, so treat game-specific examples as evidence for a troubleshooting pattern rather than a guarantee of identical results.

Start by separating a game bug from a local setup problem

A repeatable trigger is the most useful diagnostic evidence. A crash that occurs only when a controller connects points to a different layer than a crash that occurs at the same map location with keyboard input. Likewise, a smooth benchmark run followed by spikes while driving rapidly through a dense city suggests world streaming or frame-time pressure, not necessarily a defective GPU.

Forza’s support process asks for reproducible steps, and Microsoft guidance for controller-related Forza crashes likewise calls for current Windows, game, joystick, graphics, sound and other hardware drivers. A written baseline lets you identify which change helped and gives support staff something they can reproduce.

Update the complete software and firmware chain

Apply updates in a controlled order rather than changing several layers without recording them. Install the current game update, Windows updates, GPU driver, controller firmware and relevant chipset or Bluetooth drivers. Restart after major driver or firmware changes.

  1. Open the game’s launcher or storefront and install any pending game update.
  2. Run Windows Update, including optional hardware or driver updates when they are relevant to your controller or chipset.
  3. Install the current driver for the GPU. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, note that version instead of assuming the newest driver is automatically the best choice.
  4. Connect the controller and use the Xbox Accessories app, where applicable, to install controller firmware.
  5. Update motherboard chipset and Bluetooth or wireless-adapter drivers from the hardware maker.
  6. Restart Windows, then test the original reproduction sequence before changing graphics settings.

Release notes matter. Forza updates have tracked version-specific frame drops and stuttering, and updates have also fixed PC crashes, graphics-setting resets and long loading times. Check the current release notes for your installed build before spending hours on local tuning; a known issue may require a game patch rather than a setting change.

Fix controller detection, disconnects and missing input

Controller symptoms fall into three different categories: the game crashes when the controller is connected, Windows sees the device but the game receives no input, or input works and then disconnects. Test the connection path first, because it is a reversible way to separate radio, driver and software-layer problems.

Compare the three connection paths

Connection What it helps isolate Typical trade-offs Useful result
USB cable Bluetooth interference, radio range and wireless-adapter problems Usually the simplest diagnostic path; cable quality and port stability still matter If wired input is stable while wireless is not, investigate Bluetooth or adapter drivers, interference and power management
Bluetooth Operating-system Bluetooth stack and pairing state Convenient, but sensitive to interference, adapter placement and power-saving behavior If Bluetooth fails but USB works, the game is less likely to be the root cause
Dedicated wireless adapter Bluetooth-specific faults versus another wireless transport Requires a compatible adapter and current adapter driver If the adapter is stable and Bluetooth is not, focus on the Bluetooth path rather than graphics settings

Use a USB cable for a quick isolation run, then try Bluetooth and a wireless adapter where available. A known-good Xbox Wireless Controller can serve as a comparison device. It is a diagnostic control, not a universal cure: if both controllers fail over the same path, keep investigating the computer, game and input layers.

Controller troubleshooting sequence

  1. Close the game completely and restart Windows once. A restart clears a stuck input service and gives you a clean reproduction.
  2. Update the controller firmware in the Xbox Accessories app when the controller is supported.
  3. Reconnect using USB and launch the game. Test menus, steering, throttle, braking and every button used to reproduce the issue.
  4. Repeat over Bluetooth, then through a wireless adapter if one is available. Record which path fails and whether the failure occurs at launch, in menus or during a race.
  5. Update Windows, chipset drivers, Bluetooth drivers and wireless-adapter drivers, then repeat the same test.
  6. Temporarily disable Steam Input, third-party remappers, overlays and controller virtualisation layers one at a time. Duplicate input layers can make a device appear detected while routing or suppressing the actual game input.
  7. Verify the game files after firmware, driver and connection tests. A damaged file can imitate missing input or trigger a crash when the game loads its controller-related components.

If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, check Bluetooth interference, adapter placement, Windows power-management settings and duplicate input software. If it fails over every path, test another USB port and a known-good controller, then treat the result as a broader driver, game-installation or hardware issue.

Reduce stutter and frame-time spikes without making the game look poor

Stutter is a frame-time problem, not simply a low average-FPS problem. A game can report a high average while repeatedly pausing for asset streaming, shader work or a saturated CPU. A stable, slightly lower cap generally feels better than an uncapped output that oscillates between a high peak and severe spikes.

Confirm the baseline before tuning

Check the storefront requirements for the exact game and build. Forza Horizon 5’s Steam listing specifies Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher and lists graphics options including an Nvidia GTX 970, AMD RX 470 or Intel Arc A380. Those are a storefront baseline, not a promise of a particular resolution, preset or frame rate. Open-world density, map area, API, driver and game version all change the load.

Check Why it matters What to record
Resolution and refresh rate Higher pixel counts increase GPU work and can expose an unstable refresh target Native resolution, refresh rate and any dynamic-resolution setting
Frame-rate cap An uncapped rate can keep the GPU or CPU at its limit and magnify spikes In-game, driver-level and display-level limits
VRR and HDR Conflicting display modes can complicate perceived judder and latency Whether each is enabled in Windows, the driver and the game
World density Fast driving streams geometry, textures, traffic and reflections quickly Map area and speed at which spikes occur

Use a controlled frame-rate test

  1. Enable a frame-time graph or logging tool if the game provides one. Watch the graph while driving the same route at the same speed.
  2. Set a cap below the display’s unstable peak. Choose a value the system can sustain in the heaviest area rather than the highest number seen in an empty scene.
  3. Compare fullscreen and borderless using the same cap and route. Keep the mode that produces steadier frame times on your system.
  4. Run one pass with overlays and background recording disabled. Re-enable them individually later if the problem disappears.
  5. Change one graphics setting, repeat the route and record the result. Do not change the preset, cap and driver simultaneously.

Lower the settings that control streaming load first

Setting group Why it can cause spikes Practical test
Environment geometry and world detail Fast travel reveals more objects and geometry in a short time Lower one step and repeat a high-speed route through dense scenery
Texture quality Streaming large textures stresses video memory and storage bandwidth Reduce texture quality if VRAM usage is near its limit or spikes coincide with new areas loading
Shadows Dynamic shadows add CPU and GPU work as the scene changes Lower shadow quality before reducing the entire preset
Reflections Cars, wet surfaces and city glass can require expensive extra passes Reduce reflections and test the same route in bright and wet conditions
Traffic and world-detail distance More simulated and rendered objects increase CPU work Lower traffic or distance settings if spikes track busy roads

Keep a frame-time graph while testing. If lowering one group makes the spikes less frequent, keep that change and restore unrelated settings. There is no universal best setting: a GPU-limited system may benefit most from reflections or shadows, while a CPU-limited system may respond to traffic and world-detail distance.

Display and background checks

Test HDR and VRR in clearly documented combinations rather than toggling them randomly. Confirm that Windows, the GPU driver and the game agree about the active display mode. Disable overlays and background recording for one clean run; overlays can add hooks that affect presentation or trigger conflicts without being the original cause. If the clean run is stable, re-enable one overlay at a time to identify the offender.

Stop crashes at launch, when driving or when a controller connects

Use the same evidence-led order for crashes, regardless of whether the game closes at launch or several minutes into a race. A controller-triggered crash deserves the connection and firmware tests above; a crash that follows a graphics-driver update deserves a driver comparison.

First-response recovery order

  1. Restart the computer and reproduce the crash once. Record the exact point of failure and any error text.
  2. Install current game and Windows updates.
  3. Update controller firmware and hardware drivers, especially GPU, chipset, Bluetooth and sound drivers.
  4. Remove overclocks temporarily. Return CPU, GPU and memory to known-stable settings before judging the game.
  5. Disable third-party overlays, capture tools and remappers for one run.
  6. Verify the game files through the relevant storefront or launcher.
  7. Repeat with the controller disconnected, then connect it by USB. This separates a controller path from a general launch failure.

Do not assume that a clean GPU-driver installation is always preferable to the newest driver. If the crash began immediately after an update, test the prior known-good version and record both versions. A rollback is a diagnostic step for a suspected regression, not a permanent recommendation to avoid updates.

Situation Next comparison Interpretation
Crash starts after a driver update Test the previous stable driver with the same game build and settings If the older driver restores stability, report a likely regression and keep the version record
Crash occurs only with a controller connected Test disconnected, USB, Bluetooth and adapter paths Focus on firmware, transport drivers and duplicate input layers
Crash remains after updates and file verification Remove overclocks and overlays, then repeat a minimal run If it still reproduces, collect a support-quality report rather than changing settings indefinitely

Verify files instead of reinstalling blindly

Corrupted or incomplete files can imitate a graphics crash, a long loading problem or missing controller input. Verification is faster and less disruptive than a full reinstall and should be performed after updates, controller tests and before escalating.

Steam

  1. Open the Steam Library and right-click the game.
  2. Choose Properties, then Installed Files.
  3. Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
  4. Launch the game and repeat the recorded reproduction sequence.

The exact wording can change with a launcher update, but look for the installed-files verification command rather than deleting the installation.

Xbox app, Microsoft Store and other launchers

Use the launcher’s own Verify, Repair or equivalent installed-files command when it provides one. Keep the platform and game edition in your incident record because the Windows Store and Steam builds can receive updates on different schedules. If the launcher offers no file check, document that fact before considering a reinstall; do not assume that moving between storefronts will preserve saves, settings or installed add-ons.

When to change a driver and when to roll one back

Driver choice is a controlled A/B test. Update when the game, operating system or hardware vendor lists a fix relevant to your symptoms, or when your installed version is clearly out of date. Roll back when the failure began immediately after a specific update and the previous version is known to have worked with the same game build.

Build a support ticket that can actually be investigated

If the problem survives updates, connection tests, file verification and a minimal graphics configuration, submit a ticket through the game’s official support or troubleshooting hub. Forza’s dedicated ticketing process asks players to provide exact reproduction steps or a workaround; that information helps the developer evaluate and prioritize a fix.

Include these details

  • Platform and storefront, game edition and exact game version.
  • Windows build, CPU, RAM, GPU and driver versions.
  • Display resolution, refresh rate, HDR or VRR state, graphics settings and frame cap.
  • Controller model, firmware version, connection method and whether USB, Bluetooth or an adapter changed the result.
  • Overlay, recording and remapping software status.
  • Exact numbered reproduction steps, frequency, map or event, and whether the issue occurs at launch, in menus or during play.
  • Error text, crash code, logs or screenshots when available.
  • What happened after restarting, updating, changing the driver and verifying files.

“For example, if you know the exact reproduction steps, or a workaround to avoid the problem altogether, we can use that additional info to more efficiently investigate a fix.”

A compact decision path

Symptom First isolation test Most useful next action
Controller detected but no game input USB versus Bluetooth or adapter; disable duplicate input layers Update firmware and transport drivers, then verify files
Crash when controller connects Launch without it, then connect by USB Update firmware, Windows and hardware drivers; compare connection methods
Stutter only at high speed or in dense areas Frame-time graph with a stable cap Lower geometry, textures, shadows, reflections and traffic/world-detail settings one at a time
Crash immediately after a GPU-driver update Compare with the prior known-good driver Keep the version that reproduces less often and report the regression with exact versions
Crashes and missing input persist after all tests Minimal run with current updates, verified files, no overlays or overclocks Submit a support ticket with the complete reproduction record

The goal is not to find a magical universal setting. It is to make each variable observable: one connection, driver, cap or graphics group at a time, with the same reproduction route. That method distinguishes a local configuration fault from a version-specific game issue and produces the evidence needed for a lasting fix.
