Quick answer: Start with reversible checks: restart the PC, install the latest game and Windows updates, update GPU, chipset, and audio drivers, confirm the published requirements, and verify the game files. Then isolate one cause at a time. First-run stutter may be shader compilation; crashes commonly trace to damaged files, drivers, security software, or conflicting background utilities; controller delay is best isolated by testing one pad, wired versus wireless, and XInput versus DirectInput.
Do not change ten settings at once. Record what happens, make one controlled change, and test the same scene or input action again. That approach tells you whether the limiting factor is rendering, the operating system, the game installation, or the controller path.
1. Establish what is actually failing
“Lag” can describe several different problems. A low or uneven frame rate makes animation look delayed, while a controller signal that arrives late can make an otherwise smooth game feel unresponsive. A crash may occur at launch, during shader compilation, when loading a save, or only after extended play. Identify the pattern before changing settings.
- Stutter: brief pauses, hitching when entering a new area, or uneven frame delivery even when the average frame rate looks acceptable.
- Crash: the game closes, freezes, returns to the desktop, or never gets past the launcher.
- Controller input lag: a button press or stick movement appears late, drops out, or works in menus but not reliably during play.
Note whether the fault occurs in one game or several, whether it began after a driver or Windows update, and whether it happens only while streaming, recording, or using a second monitor. Those observations determine which branch to follow.

2. Run the reversible 10-minute pass first
Steam and Microsoft put basic compatibility and installation checks near the beginning of their troubleshooting flows because they are safe, quick, and frequently effective.
- Restart the PC. A full reboot clears a stuck driver, pending update, or background process that survived the game’s last session. If the controller is wireless, power-cycle it as well.
- Confirm operating-system support and requirements. Compare your Windows edition, processor, graphics card, memory, storage, and available space with the game publisher’s minimum and recommended specifications. A machine that meets recommended specifications can still deliver uneven frame times; the list is not a guarantee of perfectly smooth play.
- Update the game and Windows. Install the current game build and all offered Windows updates, then restart if Windows requests it.
- Install manufacturer drivers. Update the GPU driver, chipset driver, and audio driver from the hardware manufacturer. Audio and chipset packages matter because they can affect device discovery, power management, and conflicts even when the visible symptom is a crash or hitch.
- Verify the installation. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before launching again. Other launchers provide an equivalent repair or verify command.
- Close avoidable software. Exit overlays, capture programs, RGB utilities, overclocking tools, and unnecessary startup applications. Keep a note of what you closed so you can restore it deliberately.
- Apply security exceptions only when documented. If security software is blocking launch, follow the game publisher’s documented exclusion procedure for the game executable or folder. Do not disable protection broadly or leave an unverified exclusion in place.
Test after this pass with the same save, level, or menu action. If the issue is gone, re-enable background programs one at a time rather than restoring everything together.
3. Fix stuttering by identifying the limiting component
Stutter is an uneven-frame-time problem, not simply a low average frame-rate problem. A game can report a high average while delivering occasional long frames that your eyes perceive as a hitch. The common causes are shader compilation, a CPU or GPU limit, RAM pressure, driver work, and heat or power throttling.

Many modern games build a shader cache the first time they encounter effects. During that process, traversal, camera movement, or a new visual effect can trigger pauses. Square Enix’s support guidance gives an example compilation period of 35 to 90 minutes, with the actual duration depending on the PC’s specifications. That is an example, not a universal timer.

Allow the game to finish its documented compilation phase before judging ordinary play. Keep the shader cache enabled. Square Enix states that stuttering should be resolved once the cache has been created. If a driver update or a damaged cache causes the hitching to return, use the game’s or GPU vendor’s documented cache-reset procedure. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance specifically lists deleting damaged shader-cache files as a step; do not delete arbitrary folders without checking the publisher’s instructions.
Determine whether the CPU, GPU, memory, or thermals are limiting
Monitor frame-time consistency, GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures, clock speeds, and RAM use while reproducing the hitch. Watch for a component that reaches a sustained limit at the exact moment the frame time spikes.
| Pattern while reproducing the hitch | Likely pressure | Controlled change to test |
|---|---|---|
| GPU utilization remains high and lowering resolution improves frame times | Graphics workload | Lower resolution or demanding effects such as ray tracing, shadows, texture detail, model detail, or shader detail |
| One or more CPU threads are saturated while the GPU has headroom | CPU workload or background activity | Close background programs and reduce CPU-heavy settings such as simulation, view distance, or crowds when the game exposes them |
| RAM use approaches the installed amount and hitching worsens during area transitions | Memory pressure | Close other applications, stop capture software, and retest the same transition |
| Temperatures rise while clocks fall and the problem appears after several minutes | Thermal or power throttling | Check cooling, unobstructed airflow, power connections, and the system’s power mode |
| Hitching is concentrated on the first visit to effects or locations, then declines | Shader or asset compilation | Complete the initial cache-building process and keep the cache enabled |
These tests are diagnostic, not permanent prescriptions. If lowering resolution makes no difference, restore it and test another setting; that result suggests the resolution-scaled GPU workload is not the main bottleneck.

- Save your current settings or take a screenshot.
- Reduce resolution or the render scale briefly to test for a GPU limit.
- If the test points to graphics load, lower ray tracing first, followed by shadows, model detail, and shader detail. Reduce texture detail only when available video memory is under pressure; textures can have little effect on a pure shader bottleneck.
- Apply one change, restart the same test scene, and compare frame-time consistency rather than only the displayed average FPS.
- Return settings that do not affect the hitch to their previous values.
SEGA’s PC Performance FAQ, updated March 10, 2026, is an example of publisher guidance that asks players to examine settings and system behavior rather than assuming that a recommended-specification PC will produce identical frame delivery in every scene.

4. Stop crashes at launch and during play
Crashes are often caused by corrupted files, incompatible drivers, security software, background utilities, or hardware that does not meet the game’s requirements. Steam notes that games may fail to launch for many reasons because PC hardware and software combinations are highly varied.
If the game will not launch
- Confirm the operating system and hardware against the publisher’s requirements.
- Restart Windows and install pending game, Windows, GPU, chipset, and audio updates.
- Verify the game files from the launcher. In Steam, use Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Close overlays, capture tools, RGB controls, overclocking utilities, and other nonessential startup programs.
- If security software reports a block, use only the publisher’s documented exclusion process and then retest with protection otherwise enabled.
If the game launches after a clean session, restore background utilities individually. The first utility that recreates the crash is a strong suspect; update it, change its overlay setting, or leave it closed while playing.
If it crashes after loading or during a specific action
Record the exact location, save file, graphics setting, and action that precedes the crash. A repeatable crash during one scene can indicate a damaged asset or shader cache, while a crash after extended play can point toward heat, power, or memory pressure. Verify files before reinstalling the entire game. Reinstallation is slower and does not correct a conflicting driver or utility.
Use a controlled clean startup
A clean startup temporarily prevents non-Microsoft services and startup programs from loading. Use it to isolate conflicts, not as a permanent configuration. After testing, restore normal startup and re-enable services in groups so that you do not lose unrelated hardware functions. Keep security protection active except for a narrow, publisher-documented exclusion that you remove after the test.

5. Isolate controller input lag
Controller troubleshooting works best as an isolation experiment. Extra pads, Bluetooth devices, remappers, overlays, and capture tools can all intercept or reorder input. Steam specifically identifies XInput emulators, Razer Synapse, capture software, and MSI Afterburner among possible conflicts.
Perform the one-controller test
- Exit the game completely.
- Unplug every other controller and input device, including spare USB pads, wheels, fight sticks, and unusual HID devices.
- Close remappers, controller configuration tools, overlays, capture software, and performance utilities.
- Connect one controller and launch the game.
- Repeat the same movement or button test in a consistent scene.
- Add devices and utilities back one at a time. Stop when the delay returns; the last item added is the variable to investigate.
Compare wired and wireless operation
Use a USB wired XInput PC controller as a diagnostic or replacement device, not as a guaranteed cure for stutter or crashes. A wired test removes Bluetooth or other wireless interference and gives you a known connection path. If the wired pad responds normally while the wireless pad lags, investigate pairing, radio interference, battery state, firmware, and the wireless adapter rather than changing graphics settings.
| Test | What it isolates | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|
| One wireless controller with all other devices removed | Wireless connection and device conflicts | Delay that disappears when other devices are removed points to interference or an input-layer conflict |
| One USB wired XInput controller | Wireless path versus game or driver path | Normal wired response with delayed wireless response narrows the problem to wireless operation |
| Same controller in another game or Windows controller test | Game-specific mapping versus system-wide behavior | Delay in every test suggests the controller, connection, or driver; delay in one game suggests its input settings or compatibility layer |
Check XInput and DirectInput mode
Look for the game’s controller mode and the launcher’s controller settings. XInput and DirectInput expose devices differently. If a game expects XInput but a remapper presents a DirectInput device, buttons may be misassigned, duplicated, or delayed. Test the controller in its native mode first; use an emulator only when the game or controller documentation requires it. Never run multiple remappers at the same time.
Remove overlay and remapper conflicts
Disable one overlay or utility at a time, beginning with controller remappers, capture software, RGB controls, and performance overlays. Steam’s conflict list includes XInput emulators, Razer Synapse, capture software, and MSI Afterburner. The goal is not to uninstall these programs; it is to determine whether their hooks are intercepting input. Once the offending layer is identified, update it, turn off its in-game overlay, or leave it closed for this game.

6. Use measurements instead of impressions
Keep a small test log with the date, game build, Windows build, GPU driver version, controller model, connection mode, and exact reproduction steps. For stutter, note frame-time behavior, temperatures, clock speeds, utilization, and RAM use. For crashes, note the last action and whether verification or a clean startup changed the outcome. For input lag, note whether the pad was wired or wireless, whether it used XInput or DirectInput, and which other devices were connected.
Change one variable per test. For example, do not lower resolution, disable ray tracing, replace the driver, and switch controllers before testing; you will not know which change helped. Use the same save, camera route, combat move, or menu sequence after each change so the comparisons are meaningful.
7. When to contact the developer
Escalate after the reversible checks, file verification, controlled background-process test, and device isolation fail to identify a cause. Steam recommends contacting the developer when general troubleshooting does not resolve a launch problem. Include evidence that lets support reproduce the issue rather than only saying that the game is “laggy.”

- For controller delay: controller model, wired or wireless mode, XInput or DirectInput mode, other connected devices, and remappers or overlays tested.
Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guide, updated July 22, 2026, directs players to complete its listed checks before opening a support ticket and documents a CrashReport folder. If the game creates that folder, attach the requested reports rather than deleting them. Follow the publisher’s upload instructions and remove personal information from logs when instructed.
Quick Recap
8. A compact decision path
- Everything is affected: reboot, update Windows and hardware drivers, and test with background utilities closed. A system-wide problem is less likely to be a single game asset.
- Only the first run stutters: allow shader compilation to finish and keep the cache enabled. Rebuild it only through the documented game or GPU procedure if it becomes damaged.
- Stutter follows temperature or clock changes: investigate cooling, power delivery, and airflow before lowering every setting.
- Only launch fails: verify files, perform a clean startup, and follow the publisher’s narrow security-exclusion procedure if a block is documented.
- Only the controller is delayed: disconnect every other device, test one wired XInput pad, then compare wireless and DirectInput paths.
- Nothing changes after isolation: send the developer the reproduction log, system details, and crash report folder or other files requested by its support page.
