Start by updating Tearscape in Steam, then test one performance variable at a time. Stuttering every few seconds and consistently low frame rates have different likely causes, so use separate diagnostic paths instead of changing every graphics option at once. Official patches include performance optimizations, but no published source confirms one setting, launch option, driver version, or accessory that fixes every computer.
Quickest troubleshooting order
Work through these steps in sequence and retest after each change:
- Update the game through Steam. The developer’s announcement archive lists Changelog 1.1.0 with “some performance optimizations” and Changelog 1.0.5 with “small performance optimizations.”
- Record your baseline. Note your platform, monitor count, resolution, refresh rate, whether HDR is enabled, and whether the problem is low average FPS or periodic hitching.
- Run a controlled display test. Use one monitor, turn HDR off temporarily, and compare fullscreen with windowed mode. Change only one item between runs.
- Test frame pacing. Compare an uncapped frame rate with a stable cap and compare V-Sync enabled with V-Sync disabled, if those controls are available in your setup.
- Disable nonessential overlays and capture tools. Close overlay, recording, monitoring, and chat components before launching the game again.
- Check that your computer meets the listed minimums. The requirements are low, but they are eligibility checks rather than a promise of a particular frame rate.
If the issue remains after these tests, keep the results rather than repeatedly changing settings. A short record of what changed and what did not makes it easier to identify a display-path, driver, or wider Windows problem.
First identify the symptom
Consistently low FPS
If the game is slow almost all the time, rendering load, resolution, a system below the minimum requirements, power management, or another process consuming CPU or GPU time is more plausible than a brief frame-time interruption. A low average frame rate usually improves when the rendering workload is reduced, although the available evidence does not establish a specific Tearscape setting that always works.

Periodic hitching or frame-time spikes
If play is smooth and then pauses or judders at regular intervals, focus on frame pacing and conflicts. Display synchronization, multiple monitors, HDR, overlays, capture software, driver behavior, and another application waking up in the background can all be diagnostic targets. Do not assume that a high average FPS rules out this type of problem.
What the available player report shows
One Steam Community report from 2026 describes Tearscape lagging every 5–30 seconds on a PC listed by the user as having an RX 9070, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32 GB of RAM, and current drivers. The report is an individual observation, not a prevalence measurement or a controlled benchmark. The same report says a Steam Deck was stable with the CRT filter off; that does not establish that Steam Deck systems broadly share, or avoid, the issue.
Update Tearscape before changing settings
Patch state is the least speculative variable to eliminate. The official changelog records performance work in two releases:

In Steam, open Library, select Tearscape, and check whether an update is queued. After the download completes, restart Steam and launch the game again. If the behavior is unchanged, verify the installation from Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. File verification is a recovery check for an incomplete or damaged local installation; it is not evidence of a particular Tearscape bug.

Confirm your platform and baseline hardware
Steam lists the following minimum configurations. They indicate that the game should be able to launch on the stated platform; they do not specify a target FPS, frame-time consistency, resolution, or quality preset.

Check the full system rather than only the GPU. A computer can exceed the graphics minimum while having a background process, thermal limit, power setting, driver fault, or display configuration that causes hitching. Conversely, a machine below one of the listed requirements may launch but cannot be expected to deliver consistent performance.
Run a controlled display test
The purpose of this test is to isolate the display path. Do not alter several options between runs, or you will not know which change mattered.

- Quit browsers, launchers, recording programs, and other nonessential applications.
- Disconnect or disable additional monitors temporarily so only one display is active.
- Turn Windows or macOS HDR off for the test.
- Launch Tearscape at the same resolution you normally use and test fullscreen.
- Repeat in windowed mode without changing any other option.
- Write down whether the hitch occurs, how long the test ran, and which mode was active.
If one-monitor fullscreen is smooth but two monitors or windowed mode is not, the result points to a display-path interaction rather than proof that the game needs a new graphics card. If every mode behaves identically, move to frame pacing and overlay tests.

Test frame pacing, V-Sync and frame caps deliberately
Uncapped versus capped output
Run one test with the frame rate uncapped, then another with a stable cap that your system can sustain. A cap can reduce large swings between frames, while an uncapped test shows whether the hitch is tied to the frame-rate limit itself. Use the same scene and test duration for both runs.
V-Sync on versus off
Compare V-Sync enabled and disabled, changing no other setting. V-Sync can alter the timing at which frames are presented; whether that helps depends on the monitor, refresh rate, driver, and game behavior. A successful result on one setup is not a universal Tearscape fix.
External frame-rate tools
The community report says the player tried capped and uncapped rates, V-Sync, RTSS, fullscreen, windowed mode, one and two screens, HDR, and current drivers without reporting a universally successful combination. Treat RTSS or any similar limiter as a diagnostic experiment, not a required installation. Test one limiter at a time and remove it if it adds another overlay or conflict.
Disable overlays and capture software
Overlays can hook into a game’s rendering path and may also wake up on a timer. Temporarily disable nonessential components, restart the game, and retest:

- Steam’s in-game overlay
- GPU-driver performance panels and recording overlays
- Chat, streaming, and screen-capture overlays
- Frame-rate monitors and hardware polling tools
- Any third-party game launcher overlay
Do not disable security software permanently. If turning off one overlay changes the behavior, re-enable the others and test the suspected component alone so you can identify the conflict. If no overlay changes the result, restore your normal settings and continue with driver and system checks.
Check drivers and Windows conflicts
Use a clean, current driver state
Install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU and operating system, then reboot before retesting. “Current” means the version available for your hardware at the time you perform the check; the available sources do not identify a particular driver release as a Tearscape fix. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, compare with the previous known-good driver using your manufacturer’s supported rollback procedure.
Look for a process that wakes up during the hitch
Open Task Manager before launching the game and watch CPU, GPU, memory, disk, and network activity while the stutter occurs. A spike in another process at the same moment is a lead, not proof of causation. Pause scheduled scans, cloud synchronization, large downloads, and recording jobs for a controlled test, then restore them afterward.
Optional broader diagnostics
If Tearscape still hitches after the game update, one-monitor test, frame-pacing comparisons, overlay isolation, and driver check, an optional PC diagnostic or driver-maintenance utility can help identify broader Windows conflicts. Such a utility is not an official Tearscape fix, is not endorsed by the developer, and cannot guarantee a frame-rate improvement. Use it only for general system diagnosis and review its proposed changes before applying them.

Platform-specific checks
Windows
- Confirm Windows 10 or later and the listed processor, memory, graphics, and storage baseline.
- Test with one monitor and HDR disabled before changing game quality settings.
- Use Task Manager to correlate a hitch with another process or a resource spike.
- After changing a driver, reboot and repeat the same controlled scene.
macOS
- Confirm macOS 11.0 or later, an Apple M1, at least 2 GB RAM, and 400 MB available storage as listed by Steam.
- Test with external displays and HDR disconnected or disabled when possible, then compare with the normal setup.
- Close screen recording, synchronization, and overlay utilities before launching.
SteamOS/Linux
- Use Ubuntu 20.04 LTS or the SteamOS/Linux environment supported by your installation, with the listed 2 GB RAM, graphics, processor, and 200 MB storage baseline.
- Compare one display with multiple displays and record whether the problem changes under fullscreen or windowed mode.
- Keep the game build and graphics stack current through your distribution’s supported update path.
Steam Deck
Do not infer a general Steam Deck diagnosis from a single report. The available report says one player’s Deck was stable when the CRT filter was off, while that player’s PC lagged. If you use a Deck, test the CRT filter on and off as separate runs, keep the same scene and frame-rate limit, and record the result. Stability on one Deck does not prove that every Deck configuration will behave the same way.
Lower rendering load only after isolation
If your symptom is low average FPS rather than periodic hitching, reduce one rendering demand at a time. Start with the game’s resolution or the most expensive available visual effect, then retest. If Tearscape does not expose a particular option, do not force a launch command or configuration edit based on advice for another game. No researched source confirms a universal Tearscape launch option, graphics preset, or configuration file.

This approach prevents a common troubleshooting error: changing resolution, V-Sync, HDR, monitor count, and drivers together, then attributing the result to the wrong variable.

Tearscape’s official minimum requirements are unusually low, so a new GPU, RAM kit, SSD, monitor, controller, or cooling pad is not automatically justified. The community report of recurring lag on a system listed with an RX 9070, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and 32 GB RAM is anecdotal, but it demonstrates why a powerful specification alone does not identify the cause.
Consider hardware only when the computer is below the published minimums, shows similar instability in other games or applications, or exhibits a measurable thermal, power, storage, or memory fault. If only Tearscape hitches while other workloads are stable, finish the software and display-path tests before spending money.
When to stop testing and report the problem
Contact the developer or use the game’s community support channel after you can provide a reproducible description. Include:
- Operating system and platform: Windows, macOS, SteamOS/Linux, or Steam Deck
- Game version and whether Steam downloaded the latest update
- CPU, GPU, RAM, monitor resolution, refresh rate, and monitor count
- Whether HDR, fullscreen, V-Sync, a frame cap, CRT filter, and overlays were enabled
- Whether the symptom is low FPS or a hitch every few seconds
- The exact test that changed or failed to change the behavior
- For recurring hitches, the observed interval, such as the one report’s 5–30-second pattern
That information distinguishes a reproducible game issue from a machine-specific conflict. It also avoids presenting one player’s result as a universal diagnosis.
