Frame generation can make a game look smoother, but it cannot repair an unstable native render. The reliable fix is to stabilize the game-rendered frame rate first, use only one frame-generation system, pair it with the vendor’s latency feature, and verify VRR, V-SYNC, fullscreen mode, and refresh rate as a single configuration. Then isolate artifacts by type. If the base frame pacing is sound and visual errors persist after updates, reduce or disable frame generation and report the reproducible case to the game developer.

Why frame generation stutters or produces visual artifacts

Frame-generation technology inserts synthesized frames between frames rendered by the game. It estimates how objects moved by using motion vectors, depth data, and the previous image. The inserted frame is not an additional fully rendered game frame, so it can only be as convincing as the information supplied by the game and the consistency of the native frames.

When the native render fluctuates, the generated images inherit that uneven timing. A counter may show a high multiplied FPS while controls still feel delayed or motion looks jerky. Errors are most visible where the game does not provide dependable motion data: HUD elements, subtitles, crosshairs, shadows, thin geometry, particles, foliage, wires, and objects that appear or disappear between frames.

Use this order of operations:

  • Measure native FPS and frame-time consistency with frame generation disabled.
  • Enable one frame-generation path only; do not stack game-integrated generation with a driver-level interpolator.
  • Use the matching latency feature: Reflex with DLSS Frame Generation, Radeon Anti-Lag with AFMF, or Xe Low Latency with XeSS-FG.
  • Check VRR, V-SYNC, fullscreen mode, and monitor refresh rate together.
  • Change one setting at a time and keep a record of the result.

1. Establish a clean native-render baseline

Before changing image quality or synchronization, turn frame generation off and repeat the same scene, camera movement, and route through the game. Record both the rendered FPS and a frame-time graph. An average FPS number hides spikes; a graph shows whether frames arrive at regular intervals.

Stabilize the rendered input

  1. Disable frame generation in the game and close any driver-level frame interpolator.
  2. Choose a repeatable test location, such as a busy outdoor area or a combat sequence. Use the same resolution, display mode, and graphics settings for each comparison.
  3. Watch the frame-time graph while panning the camera and moving through the scene. Look for repeated spikes, long pauses, or large swings rather than a single low reading.
  4. Lower GPU-heavy settings or resolution until the native render is consistently paced. Shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ray tracing, and crowd density are common starting points, but change only one group at a time so you know what helped.
  5. Re-enable generation only after the native result is stable. Treat the native FPS as the input to generation; do not use the multiplied output as proof that the render is healthy.

Intel’s current XeSS Frame Generation developer guidance lists 40 FPS as a minimum and 60 FPS as recommended for the best latency experience. Those figures apply to the rendered input, not the generated total, and are guidance rather than a universal requirement for every game or GPU.

2. Use one frame-generation path

Running two interpolators on the same presentation chain can create uneven cadence, duplicated motion, and extra latency. If a game has native support, prefer that implementation and disable global or driver-level alternatives.

Native DLSS Frame Generation versus Smooth Motion

NVIDIA states that native DLSS Frame Generation and Smooth Motion are competing technologies and should not be used together. Turn off Smooth Motion when the game’s own DLSS Frame Generation option is enabled. Conversely, if you are testing Smooth Motion for a title without native support, leave the game’s frame-generation option off.

Other duplicate paths

Disable any second interpolator supplied by a launcher, overlay, community mod, or graphics utility. Also avoid testing multiple upscalers or injectors at once. A clean test has one upscaler, one frame-generation method, and no overlay that inserts its own frames.

3. Match frame generation with the correct latency feature

Generated frames do not contain new game logic or additional input samples. They can raise the displayed refresh cadence while the game still produces input updates at the native rate. Latency-reduction features help control the render queue, but they cannot recreate missing motion information or make an unstable base render smooth.

Frame-generation implementation Latency feature to test What it addresses
DLSS Frame Generation NVIDIA Reflex, when exposed by the game Coordinates CPU and GPU work to reduce queuing associated with the generated presentation.
AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) Radeon Anti-Lag AMD says AFMF can add latency and recommends Anti-Lag for the optimal experience.
Intel XeSS Frame Generation (XeSS-FG) Intel Xe Low Latency Accounts for additional Present calls when frame generation is detected.

Enable the matching option in the game or driver, then compare mouse or controller response in the same scene. If controls feel delayed, first confirm that the native frame rate is stable and that no second frame-generation path is active; latency features are not a substitute for either condition.

4. Verify VRR, V-SYNC, fullscreen, and refresh rate as one set

Presentation settings interact. A variable-refresh display, a V-SYNC policy, the game’s display mode, and the operating system’s selected refresh rate all influence whether generated frames arrive at the panel evenly. Test them as a configuration rather than changing one item and assuming the others are unaffected.

Check the monitor and operating system

  • Confirm that the monitor is actually running at its intended high-refresh mode in the operating system.
  • Verify that variable refresh rate (VRR) is enabled on the monitor and in the graphics driver when the display supports it.
  • Check the monitor’s stated VRR range. If the native render repeatedly falls below that range, the display may leave VRR operation or apply a different low-frame-rate behavior.
  • Make sure the game is using the same display that you configured, especially in a multi-monitor setup.

Test the game’s presentation mode

Record whether the game is using exclusive fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, or a window. Requirements differ by implementation and driver version. AMD release notes for an AFMF version recommend a FreeSync or other VRR display and specify fullscreen with V-SYNC disabled for that release. Intel documents that entering exclusive fullscreen while XeSS-FG is enabled can disable frame generation and switch to passthrough presentation. Therefore, a setting that works for AFMF is not a universal rule for DLSS or XeSS-FG.

After changing display mode, leave the menu, reload the same test scene, and confirm that frame generation is still active. Some games silently fall back to passthrough when the mode, resolution, or output device changes.

Choose a frame-cap strategy by observation

There is no single FPS-cap number that applies to every GPU, game, monitor, and VRR range. Test the game uncapped and then with a cap that leaves headroom below the display’s practical limit. Keep the setting that produces the flattest native frame-time graph and the fewest presentation spikes. Record whether the cap is imposed by the game, driver, or an external utility, because stacking caps can create their own cadence.

5. Remove motion-blur amplification

Generated frames can make an existing blur effect appear doubled or excessively smeared. Set motion blur to Off for diagnosis, then test a low value if you prefer the effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA Streamline advises halving motion-blur distance or magnitude when DLSS Frame Generation is used. Intel likewise recommends disabling or modifying motion blur for XeSS-FG. These are implementation-specific recommendations, so treat them as starting points rather than a universal percentage for every game.

6. Identify the artifact by what is moving

HUD, subtitles, crosshairs, and nameplates flicker

UI layers may be composited after the world motion vectors are generated. The interpolator can then treat a static subtitle, reticle, or nameplate as if it belongs to the moving scene, producing shimmer, double images, or brief displacement. NVIDIA research describes strong artifacts on UI and shadows when elements are not modeled by motion vectors.

  • Check whether the artifact disappears when frame generation is disabled. That confirms the feature is involved, but not necessarily that the game or driver is defective.
  • Look for a game setting that renders HUD elements at native resolution or through a separate UI path; use it only if the game documents that option.
  • Reduce the generation multiplier or switch to the game’s native implementation if multiple modes are available.
  • If the UI remains corrupted in a current build with a stable native render, capture a short reproducible clip and report it to the developer.

Fences, wires, foliage, particles, and thin geometry break up

Thin or partially transparent objects change visibility rapidly. A fence can be visible in one source frame and hidden by camera motion in the next, leaving the interpolator without enough evidence to place it. Lowering the generation multiplier can make the error less conspicuous; disabling generation is the definitive diagnostic.

Compare the same object while standing still, walking, and rotating the camera quickly. If the defect appears only during rapid motion or when the object crosses a contrasting background, it is characteristic of motion-vector or visibility ambiguity rather than a monitor fault.

Shadows shimmer or duplicate

Shadows can change shape independently of the caster’s apparent movement, and some games do not provide a complete motion representation for them. Test lower shadow quality and then frame generation off. If only the generated frames show the problem, keep the native setting that gives stable shadows and decide whether the performance gain is worth the remaining error.

The whole screen judders or cadence feels uneven

Whole-screen judder is more often a timing problem than an image-quality problem. Recheck the native frame-time graph, VRR range, V-SYNC state, refresh rate, display mode, and frame cap. Confirm that a second interpolator is not active. Do not start by changing texture quality or sharpening; those settings cannot correct uneven presentation.

Magenta tint, severe stutter, or failure after a mode switch

A sudden magenta cast, a large hitch, or a problem that begins after changing resolution, fullscreen mode, or a pause can indicate an integration or resource-state error. NVIDIA warns that incorrect integration values can cause a mismatch between frame generation and Reflex, leading to increased input latency and stutter.

Disable frame generation while loading, in menus, during pauses, and while changing resolution or display mode if the game allows it. Return to the main scene only after the swap is complete. If the game does not manage those transitions correctly, keep generation disabled until a patch is available.

7. Update, isolate, and retest methodically

  1. Install the latest game build available for your platform and a current graphics driver that supports the chosen implementation.
  2. Reset experimental driver overrides for the game. Leave only the intended upscaler, frame-generation method, VRR policy, and latency feature enabled.
  3. Disable overlays, injectors, performance monitors, reshade-style effects, and recording tools for one test. Re-enable them individually only after the clean configuration works.
  4. Use one change per test run. Keep the same save, scene, resolution, refresh rate, display mode, and camera movement.
  5. Record GPU model, driver version, game build, resolution, native FPS, generated FPS, refresh rate, VRR and V-SYNC state, fullscreen mode, latency feature, and the exact artifact.

If the issue disappears when an overlay or injector is removed, add tools back one at a time to identify the conflict. If it reproduces only in one game build or one presentation mode with current software, send the record and a short capture to the game developer.

Choosing among DLSS, AFMF, and XeSS-FG

Compare implementations on the conditions that affect your particular system, not on the multiplied FPS counter alone.

Comparison point Questions to answer
Minimum stable rendered FPS What native FPS and frame-time consistency do you get before generation? Intel’s guidance is 40 FPS minimum and 60 FPS recommended for the best latency experience with XeSS-FG.
Input latency Is the vendor’s matching latency feature enabled, and does control response remain acceptable in the same scene?
Artifact behavior Do HUD elements, shadows, thin geometry, foliage, or particles break up during movement?
Presentation compatibility Does the implementation work with your VRR range, V-SYNC policy, fullscreen mode, resolution, and refresh rate?
Support and updates Is the feature native to the game, and does the current game build and driver expose it correctly?
Integration path Is it integrated by the game or injected globally? Native support is easier to isolate when diagnosing a defect.

NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation can generate up to five frames per rendered frame on supported GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware. A higher generation multiplier increases the number of synthesized images, not the amount of new game simulation or input data, so evaluate latency and artifacts alongside the displayed FPS.

When disabling frame generation is the correct fix

Turn it off when the native render is stable but the feature causes persistent UI corruption, distracting geometry errors, unacceptable latency, or cadence problems that your display configuration cannot resolve. Use the game’s upscaler without frame generation if that improves image quality and native performance, or lower demanding settings to maintain a steady rendered rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disabling generation is also appropriate when a game loses the feature during exclusive-fullscreen transitions, produces severe errors after loading or pausing, or has a known integration defect that remains after updating. A stable native 60 FPS experience is preferable to a higher counter with visible duplicates and delayed controls.

A reproducible report developers can act on

Include enough information for the developer to recreate the presentation chain:

  • Game name, platform, game build, GPU model, driver version, and operating-system version.
  • Resolution, refresh rate, monitor VRR capability and range, VRR state, V-SYNC state, and display mode.
  • Upscaler, frame-generation method, generation multiplier if exposed, and latency feature.
  • Native FPS and frame-time behavior with generation off, followed by generated FPS with it on.
  • The exact scene, camera movement, and steps that trigger the artifact.
  • A short video showing the defect and a comparison with frame generation disabled.
  • Whether overlays, injectors, recording software, or driver overrides were enabled.

This information distinguishes a game-integration problem from an unstable base render, a presentation mismatch, or a third-party conflict.

Quick decision checklist

  • Native frame time is stable before generation is enabled.
  • Only one frame-generation system is active.
  • DLSS uses Reflex, AFMF uses Radeon Anti-Lag, or XeSS-FG uses Xe Low Latency where supported.
  • VRR, V-SYNC, fullscreen mode, refresh rate, and frame cap have been tested as a set.
  • Motion blur is off or reduced during diagnosis.
  • Artifacts have been classified as UI, thin geometry, shadows, or whole-screen cadence.
  • The game and driver are current, and overlays or injectors have been isolated.
  • A reproducible record exists before contacting the developer.
