Start with the reversible fixes: confirm your PC meets the listed requirements, update Steam and Stranded Deep, verify the installed files, and set the game to Steam’s stable None branch. If the problem is freezing, lower the demanding graphics effects. Use the DX9 startup option for fullscreen Alt-Tab crashes, launch Stranded_Deep.exe directly when the launcher fails, and back up your save folder before changing branches or files.
Choose the fix by symptom
Different failures point to different parts of the game. Use this table before changing files so you start with the lowest-risk test and preserve useful evidence.

Check requirements and establish a clean baseline
Steam’s Windows listing (2022) gives the following baseline. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee smooth performance; it only establishes that the game is within the published hardware range.

Check the processor, installed memory, graphics adapter and available disk space in Windows before troubleshooting. If the system is below a listed requirement, software changes may reduce symptoms but cannot make the hardware meet that requirement.

Update Steam and Stranded Deep
- Allow the Steam client to finish any pending update and restart it if Steam requests a restart.
- Open Library, select Stranded Deep, and install any game update shown by Steam.
- Start the game once after updating, using the stable branch described below, before changing several settings at once. A clean first run makes it easier to identify which change helped.
Verify the installed files
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click Stranded Deep and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (Steam may show a similarly named local-files page in older client layouts).
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the operation to complete.
- Launch the game again. If Steam replaces a damaged or missing file, test before applying another change.
Beam Team’s troubleshooting guidance treats verification as especially important after every update. It is a file check, not a save repair, so it should not be expected to restore a deleted or reverted world.
Use the stable None branch
- Right-click the game in Steam Library and open Properties.
- Select Betas.
- Set the branch selector to
None, identified by Beam Team as the recommended stable branch. - Let Steam finish downloading any branch change, then start the game.
Do not switch repeatedly while diagnosing a save. Different branches can handle save data differently, and Beam Team warns that saves may revert or develop issues after a branch change. Back up the save folder first if you must test another branch.
Reduce graphics load when the game freezes or stutters
Freezing and severe stutter are often workload symptoms rather than save corruption. Beam Team specifically identifies Shadows, Volumetric Clouds, Draw Distances, Ambient Occlusion, and Antialiasing as demanding effects that may need adjustment on lower-end systems.

- Lower Shadows first, because shadow maps can consume both graphics memory and rendering time.
- Reduce Volumetric Clouds if stutter is worse when looking across the sky or open water.
- Reduce Draw Distances if pauses occur while moving into a new area or viewing distant islands.
- Lower or disable Ambient Occlusion to reduce an additional lighting pass.
- Reduce Antialiasing if frame pacing remains unstable.
- Apply the settings and test the same activity that previously caused the freeze. Change one group at a time so you know which setting made the difference.
Graphics reduction is reversible and does not touch world files. If the game becomes stable but still looks rough, raise one setting at a time until you find the highest stable combination for your hardware.

Fix fullscreen Alt-Tab crashes with DX9
Beam Team documents a DX11 engine behavior that can crash when you Alt-Tab from fullscreen. If that is the exact trigger, choose the DX9 startup option rather than treating the crash as a general save or installation failure.
- Close the game completely.
- Start Stranded Deep from Steam so its startup choices appear.
- Select the DX9 option.
- Run in fullscreen and test switching to another application with Alt-Tab.
If DX9 prevents the crash, keep using it for fullscreen sessions or use a windowed display mode. This workaround targets the Alt-Tab path; it does not prove that DX11 is defective in every situation.
Bypass a broken launcher
If Steam’s launcher fails, hangs, or closes before the game window appears, run the game executable directly. Beam Team’s workaround bypasses the Stranded_Deep_x64 launcher.
- Open Steam Library and right-click Stranded Deep.
- Choose Properties, then open Installed Files.
- Select Browse (or Browse local files) to open the installation folder in File Explorer.
- Double-click
Stranded_Deep.exe. - If the direct executable also fails, record your Windows version, CPU, RAM, graphics adapter and VRAM for the support report, then complete file verification if you have not already done so.
Launching the executable directly is a diagnostic bypass, not a replacement for fixing missing files. If verification reports replacements and the direct launch then works, the original problem was likely in the installed files or launcher path.

Protect and locate your saves before changing anything
Back up first. Copying the complete game folder is the safest way to preserve every slot and configuration file before changing branches, deleting data, or attempting recovery.
Current Windows save location
The current save area is:

- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Paste
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowBeam Team GamesStranded Deepand press Enter. - Close the game and Steam before copying files, so no process is writing a slot while you make the backup.
- Copy the entire
Stranded Deepfolder to a separate location such as an external drive or a clearly named folder on another disk. - Keep the original untouched. Make any recovery experiments on a duplicate copy.
Beam Team’s 0.76.00 stable notes document a migration from the older location %USERPROFILE%DocumentsStranded Deep to the LocalLow path. If you have an older installation or an apparently empty current folder, check the former Documents location for legacy data, but do not move or delete it until the current folder has been backed up.

Recognize slot folders and configuration data

Options.json contains configuration data; it is not a substitute for backing up the slot folders. If settings reset or permissions are suspected, compare the file after closing the game, but do not overwrite the whole save directory while troubleshooting.
Recover after a branch switch
If a save vanished or reverted immediately after changing branches:
- Stop launching the game repeatedly; additional runs can make it harder to identify which files belong to which branch.
- Copy the entire current save folder to a second backup with the date in its name.
- Set Steam back to the branch on which the save last worked, normally
Nonefor the stable release, and let Steam finish switching. - Launch once and check the slots.
- If the save is still absent, close the game and compare the backed-up folders rather than deleting files at random. Preserve every original copy for support.
Branch changes can cause save reversion or compatibility problems; there is no safe assumption that a save created on one branch will be writable on another. A backup gives you a reversible starting point while you test.

Collect an output_log for repeatable crashes
When the crash continues after updates, verification, branch consistency and the symptom-specific fixes, send the developer a fresh log rather than a generic description.
- Reproduce the crash once, if possible, so the log contains the failure from the current run.
- Immediately open the game’s
Stranded_Deep_Datafolder in the local installation directory. - Locate
output_logand copy it without editing the contents. - Email it to
bugs@beamteamgames.comwith the subjectGame Crash, following Beam Team’s troubleshooting instructions. - Include your Windows version, CPU model, RAM amount, graphics adapter and VRAM, the Steam branch, whether you used DX9 or DX11, the exact action that triggered the crash, and which steps already worked or failed.
Attach the log from the same run as the description. An old log collected after several launches may no longer contain the relevant error.
Use antivirus checks only as a secondary test
Steam’s general client guidance notes that antivirus software can hook deeply into a system and affect disk or network operations. Treat this as a later check, after game updates and file verification, because security software can also protect your saves.
- Review the antivirus quarantine and event history for a blocked game executable or file.
- If your security product supports a narrowly scoped, temporary test exclusion, use it only for the game’s installation folder and restore the protection immediately after testing.
- Do not leave real-time protection disabled, and do not download replacement executables from unofficial sources.
- If the crash disappears only during the test, ask the security-product vendor how to create a permanent, least-privilege rule.
A low-risk order of operations
For most PCs, this sequence gives the most information while protecting progress:
- Confirm the published CPU, RAM, VRAM, DirectX and storage requirements.
- Update Steam and Stranded Deep.
- Set the branch to stable
None. - Verify the installed files.
- Back up
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowBeam Team GamesStranded Deep. - Lower the five demanding graphics settings for freezing or stutter.
- Use DX9 for fullscreen Alt-Tab crashes.
- Run
Stranded_Deep.exedirectly if the launcher fails. - Check antivirus events only after the game-specific steps.
- Send a fresh
output_logand complete system specifications to Beam Team for a repeatable failure.
File verification, graphics changes, branch consistency and direct executable launch are reversible. Save-folder edits and branch switching are the points where a backup is essential.
