Start with a fresh restart, install pending operating-system and graphics-driver updates, verify the game’s files in Steam, and close non-essential background software. Then compare your computer with the game’s Steam requirements. If the game opens to a black, stretched, cropped, or otherwise unusable picture, update the video driver and DirectX first, then test a windowed or explicit-resolution launch option.
Work through these checks in order
A puzzle game that appears briefly and closes is usually crashing during startup. A game that launches with a black or distorted picture usually has a video-driver, DirectX, display-mode, or saved-configuration problem. The sequence below starts with reversible fixes and postpones disruptive steps.
- Restart the computer and Steam.
- Install operating-system and component-driver updates.
- Check the game’s requirements and operating-system support.
- Verify the installation in Steam.
- Isolate software conflicts.
- Recover the display with launch options.
- Collect evidence before contacting the developer.
1. Restart Steam and update the computer
Restart before changing settings
Exit Steam completely, restart the computer, and open Steam again before testing the game. A process left running after a failed launch can keep files, graphics components, or a display mode in a bad state. Test the puzzle game by itself after the restart. If Steam shows “Preparing to Launch” and then returns to the Library, note whether the behavior changes after the restart rather than immediately changing several settings.

Steam identifies an outdated Windows, Linux, or macOS installation as a possible cause of games failing after “Preparing to Launch.” Install all available updates for your operating system, restart when requested, and test again. On Windows, Windows Update also delivers .NET Framework versions that some games require. A system can appear generally usable while still lacking a component needed by one title, so do not skip optional platform updates that are specifically pending for the operating system.

Update graphics components
Install the current driver for your graphics hardware from the normal update channel for your operating system or GPU manufacturer. For display problems, update DirectX as well. A driver update is especially important when the game opens but shows a black screen, incorrect scaling, missing effects, or an immediate crash. Record the driver version after updating; it becomes useful evidence if the game still fails.
Change one thing, then retest
After an update or restart, launch the puzzle game before making another change. This gives each step a clear result. If a launch succeeds only after the restart, continue testing once more so you know the problem was not a temporary process state.
2. Check requirements and platform support
Open the game’s Steam store page and compare its listed requirements with the computer you are using. Check every category rather than only the processor:

- Installed memory.
- Graphics hardware and its driver.
- Operating-system version and edition.
- Free storage space for the installation and updates.
Steam warns that a computer at or below the listed requirements can experience launch and performance problems. A title may install successfully even when the hardware or operating system cannot run it reliably. Check available storage before verification or reinstallation too, because both operations need room to complete their work.
How to interpret a requirement mismatch
If the computer is below the listed CPU, memory, graphics, or operating-system requirement, treat that as a possible cause rather than assuming damaged files. File verification cannot add missing hardware capability or platform support. If the machine meets the requirements, continue with the software and installation checks instead of repeatedly changing video settings.
Linux: distinguish native support from Proton
On Linux, confirm whether the game offers a native Linux build. If it does not, you may be running it through Steam Play/Proton, which adds a compatibility layer. Check the game’s Proton community discussion for title-specific workarounds. If the behavior appears to be a Proton compatibility bug, Steam directs players to the Proton issue tracker rather than treating it as a normal file-corruption problem.
Native support and Proton are different troubleshooting paths. A native build uses the developer’s Linux version and its stated requirements. Proton runs Windows game code through a compatibility layer, so a successful download does not prove that every renderer, video mode, or startup component will work. Include the Proton context when reporting a reproducible failure.

macOS: confirm a Mac version
Check that the store page lists macOS support for the edition you own. Keep macOS current before troubleshooting launch failures. A Windows-only build cannot be repaired by verifying files on a Mac. If the store page does not list Mac support, the correct next step is platform compatibility information from the developer, not repeated display-option experiments.

3. Verify the game files in Steam
Verification is the first repair for missing or damaged game content, including files that can cause missing textures or crashes. It is less disruptive than deleting and reinstalling the entire game and normally preserves the existing installation and local configuration.
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the puzzle game, or select its gear icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game again.
The check can take several minutes. Do not run it while another system-intensive task is active, and do not verify multiple games at the same time. Let Steam finish downloading or replacing content before testing; interrupting the operation leaves the result unclear.
What verification repairs
Steam can reacquire missing or damaged downloaded content. That makes verification relevant when a puzzle game crashes while loading or displays missing textures. It does not change the computer’s operating system, upgrade a graphics card, or convert an unsupported Windows build into a native Linux or macOS version.
What a verification warning means
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced. That message does not automatically mean the repair failed. Steam can restore downloaded game content while preserving settings stored on the computer. If the repaired content launches but the old display problem returns, the preserved configuration may still be selecting an incompatible resolution or refresh rate; use the controlled launch-option tests below.
Verification versus reinstall

Verification is therefore the lower-cost first repair. Reinstalling is not a substitute for checking requirements or platform support, and it may not remove every local configuration file.
4. Remove software conflicts without weakening security permanently
Close non-essential software one program at a time, launch the game, and note whether the behavior changes. Steam lists software that interferes with Steam as a possible reason a game will not launch. Useful candidates to test include:
- In-game overlays and chat overlays.
- Screen-recording and capture tools.
- Antivirus or other security components that inspect game processes.
- GPU, CPU, or fan-tuning utilities.
- Other non-essential background applications.
Change one variable per test so you can identify the actual conflict. If the game works after a particular program is closed, restore programs individually and adjust that program’s game or overlay settings. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled permanently; use the result to create a narrow, documented exception only if your security software and the game developer support that approach.

Do not close every background process at once if you need to identify a cause. A one-at-a-time test tells you which application changes the result and avoids mistaking a simultaneous restart or update for the fix. Restore each program after testing unless it is confirmed as the conflict.

5. Recover a black, stretched, cropped, or wrong-resolution display
Update the graphics driver and DirectX before changing launch settings. If the game still opens with an unusable image, force a simpler display mode from Steam. These options are recovery tools, not permanent replacements for a correctly configured in-game video menu.
Enter one launch option at a time
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game, or select its gear icon, and choose Properties.
- Stay on General.
- Find the Launch Options field.
- Enter one option from the table below, then close the Properties window.
- Launch the game and test the result.
- Remove the option after normal video settings are restored.

Replace bracketed values with numbers; for example, a supported 1920-by-1080 mode would use -w 1920 -h 1080. Test one change at a time so you know which setting fixed the picture. If a switch has no effect, the game may not support it, or it may use a different command-line syntax. Do not leave several experimental switches in the field indefinitely, because you may not know which one is forcing the current behavior.
Windowed versus fullscreen
Windowed mode is a recovery test: it avoids an incompatible exclusive-fullscreen setting and lets you reach the game’s video menu. Once the correct resolution and refresh rate are selected, fullscreen can restore the intended presentation. If fullscreen immediately returns the black screen, leave the game windowed and use the in-game display controls or a supported explicit resolution.

- An outdated or incompatible graphics driver can fail when the game initializes its renderer.
- A saved resolution or refresh rate may not be accepted by the current monitor.
- Exclusive fullscreen can conflict with the desktop display mode.
- A damaged asset or configuration file can prevent textures or other visual content from loading.
These causes overlap, so apply the driver and DirectX updates, file verification, and one controlled launch-option test rather than changing every setting at once. A black screen that becomes visible in windowed mode points toward a display-mode or saved-resolution problem; a failure in every mode keeps driver, DirectX, file, requirement, and compatibility causes in play.
6. Choose between native Linux support and Proton carefully

Do not assume that a successful installation proves Proton compatibility. A game may launch with a blank window, fail after a short process start, or require a title-specific Proton version or setting documented by its community. Keep the native-versus-Proton distinction in any support request so the developer or Valve can reproduce the same path.
7. Know when to reinstall
Reinstall only after you have completed verification, updated the operating system and graphics components, and isolated obvious software conflicts. Reinstallation replaces the complete game content, so it takes longer and uses more storage bandwidth than verification. It is reasonable when verification repeatedly reports damaged content or when the installation remains broken after the other checks.
Before removing an installation, identify whether the game stores saves or configuration locally and whether Steam Cloud is enabled. The verification process intentionally preserves local configuration files; a reinstall may not preserve every local setting. If the display problem is caused by a saved setting, reinstalling may not remove that setting, so try windowed or explicit-resolution recovery first.

Use that record when contacting the game developer for in-depth support. For a Linux title running through Proton, include the Proton context and use the Proton community or issue tracker route when the evidence points to compatibility rather than damaged local files. Saying that verification completed, which launch option was tested, and whether windowed mode worked is more useful than reporting only that the game “doesn’t start.”
