Start with the low-risk sequence that resolves most post-update failures: exit Steam completely, restart the computer, reopen Steam, and test the game. If it still will not start, verify the game’s files, clear Steam’s download cache, repair the library folder if necessary, update the operating system and drivers, and temporarily remove software conflicts. When only one title fails, concentrate on that game’s mods, launch options, and publisher guidance. If Steam itself is damaged, reinstall the client into its existing location so installed games remain available.
First identify what actually broke
Steam games can stop at “Preparing to Launch,” close without an error, or never open after a client update for several unrelated reasons. Steam Support notes that the number of unique hardware and software configurations makes these failures difficult to diagnose with one universal fix. The fastest path is to establish whether the problem affects one game or the entire library and whether it began immediately after the Steam client changed.

There is no authoritative published percentage showing how often Steam client updates cause launch failures. Treat the update as a useful time marker, not proof of a single cause.
1. Restart Steam and the computer cleanly
Do this before changing files, drivers, or security settings. Steam’s own troubleshooting guidance treats a clean restart as a basic first step because it flushes temporary system states and caches.

- Open Steam’s menu and choose Exit. Do not merely close the window; wait for Steam to disappear from the notification area and, on Windows, confirm that no Steam process remains in Task Manager.
- Restart the computer normally. A full restart is preferable to putting the system to sleep and waking it.
- Open Steam again, allow any pending client operation to finish, and launch the affected game from the Library.
If the game starts, the failure was likely a transient process or cache state. If it does not, leave the game closed and continue with file verification.
2. Verify the affected game’s files
An interrupted download, disk error, or game update can leave local files that no longer match Steam’s manifest. Verification compares the installation with Steam’s records and reacquires files that are missing or corrupted. It does not erase your personal saves in the normal case, but a game may redownload a substantial amount of data.
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game that will not launch and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for the process to reach 100 percent before trying to launch the game.
Do not interrupt verification by forcing Steam to close or by starting the game from another shortcut. If Steam reports that files were reacquired, test the title immediately. A verification result that says all files were successfully validated does not rule out a driver, overlay, mod, or permissions problem; it only indicates that the files Steam checked match its manifest.

3. Clear the download cache, then repair the library folder
Clear Steam’s download cache
The download cache stores local configuration data used for downloads and updates. Steam says clearing it flushes that data and reacquires it from Steam’s servers. This is useful when an update appears stuck, repeatedly starts over, or leaves the client in an inconsistent state.
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Click Clear Cache and confirm.
- Steam will sign you in again. Enter your credentials, complete any requested verification, and wait for the client to finish reconnecting.
- Return to the affected game and try the launch again. If Steam schedules a download or update, let it complete first.
Clearing this cache does not reinstall every game. It resets local download information, so you may need to sign in again and recheck queued downloads.
Repair the Steam library folder
If updates cannot complete or Steam reports write or permission errors, repair the library location that contains the game.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the library’s menu button (the three-dot menu beside the drive or library entry).
- Choose Repair Folder and allow Steam to finish.
- Retry the pending game update or run file verification again.
Folder repair addresses library permissions and related update failures; it is different from clearing the download cache. If the library is on an external or secondary drive, make sure that drive is connected, unlocked, and reporting normal free space before repairing it.

4. Update the operating system and hardware drivers
A Steam client update can coincide with a platform change that exposes an existing compatibility problem. Install pending updates for Windows, macOS, or Linux, then update the graphics driver and any other hardware driver that the game depends on. Steam lists outdated operating systems, outdated drivers, and hardware near a game’s minimum requirements as common launch risks.
Check the game’s requirements
Open the game’s Steam store page and compare its operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage, and any required instruction-set or API support with your computer. “Meets the minimum” means the game may run under the publisher’s stated baseline; it does not guarantee that every graphics setting or future update will work. Pay particular attention when a recent game update raised its requirements.
Apply updates in a controlled order
- Install all pending operating-system updates and restart if requested.
- Install a current graphics driver from the hardware manufacturer or your computer maker. If the launch failure began immediately after a driver update, check whether the manufacturer provides a previous stable driver and follow its supported rollback procedure instead of repeatedly installing random versions.
- Update other relevant drivers, such as chipset, audio, or controller drivers, when the game or publisher identifies them as requirements.
- Launch Steam and test the game before adding other system changes.
On a laptop with switchable graphics, confirm that Steam and the game are using the intended high-performance GPU rather than an integrated adapter. The exact setting is supplied by the operating system or graphics-driver control panel and varies by hardware.
5. Temporarily remove software conflicts
Overlays and background utilities can inject code into a game or block files while the game starts. Steam identifies interfering software as a possible cause, and Capcom warns that security software can falsely flag or block legitimate game files.
For one controlled test, close non-essential software, including:
- Steam or third-party overlays and chat overlays
- Antivirus or endpoint-security components that are actively scanning the game folder
- VPN clients and traffic filters
- Hardware-monitoring, overclocking, fan-control, or frame-rate tools
- Controller remappers and other input utilities
- Screen recorders and capture tools
Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent fix. Pause or exit one category at a time, test the game, and re-enable it immediately after the test. If security software is the cause, create a narrowly scoped exception only through its documented settings and only for files you trust. If closing everything restores launch, re-enable programs one by one to identify the conflict rather than running the computer unprotected.
6. Fix a single game without disturbing the rest of Steam
When other titles launch normally, avoid reinstalling Steam first. Focus on changes unique to the failing game.

Remove or update mods
User-created mods can become incompatible with a new game update even when Steam’s original files verify correctly. Disable or remove the mods using the game’s documented method, then test a clean launch. Keep a backup of saves and configuration files before deleting mod folders. If the game has a mod manager, use it to disable all modifications, launch once, and re-enable them individually to find the incompatible item.
Review launch options
In the game’s Properties window, inspect the Launch Options field. Remove experimental commands, old performance tweaks, forced rendering APIs, or copied parameters unless the publisher currently recommends them. Test with the field empty, then add only one known-good option at a time. An invalid launch option can make a game close before its window appears.
Check compatibility settings
On Windows, test with compatibility mode disabled unless the game’s publisher specifically instructs you to use it. Compatibility settings selected for an older release can conflict with a current executable or launcher. Also check whether the game starts through a separate publisher launcher; that launcher may need its own update or sign-in.
Use the publisher’s current support instructions
Search the game publisher’s support page for the exact game version and the error text you see. Title-specific patches, known issues, required redistributables, and save-location instructions are controlled by the publisher, not by Steam’s general client settings.
7. Platform-specific checks

Linux users should record the Proton version selected for the game before changing it. If a new Proton version causes the failure, testing the game’s previously working version is a reversible diagnostic step; retain the version that the publisher or current compatibility guidance supports.
8. Repair Steam itself without deleting installed games
Use this step when Steam crashes, closes, or fails to open after its update, or when multiple games remain broken after cache, library, system, and conflict checks.
- Download the current Steam installer from Steam’s official distribution channel.
- Run the installer and select the same Steam installation location that already contains your library and Steam files.
- Allow the installer to replace or repair client and service files, then start Steam and sign in.
- Check the Library. Installed games should be detected in the existing library location; if a title is shown as uninstalled, use Steam’s option to add or select the existing library rather than immediately downloading a second copy.
Steam warns that uninstalling Steam through another method can delete game and userdata content. Do not remove the Steam directory first, and do not use an operating-system uninstall route that is not part of Steam’s supported repair process. If you have irreplaceable saves stored locally, back them up before any repair.

9. Collect evidence before escalating
If the game still will not launch, provide useful facts instead of reporting only that “Steam is broken.” Record:
- The exact on-screen error, or the fact that the game reaches “Preparing to Launch” and then closes.
- Whether every Steam game fails or only one title.
- When the failure began and whether it followed a Steam client, game, operating-system, or driver update.
- Your operating-system version, graphics hardware, graphics-driver version, and whether the game uses Proton.
- Any recent mod, launch-option, compatibility, overlay, antivirus, VPN, or controller-software change.
- The result of file verification, cache clearing, and library-folder repair.
- Steam and game crash logs requested by the publisher or Steam Support.
For a single-title failure, send this information to the game developer or publisher’s support channel. For configuration-specific problems that affect the computer beyond Steam, a qualified local technician can examine system logs and hardware. Avoid deleting logs or reinstalling the operating system before support has had a chance to review the evidence.

Each step narrows the cause, so note what changes rather than performing every fix at once. If a restart works only until Steam updates again, the client state or a background application deserves attention. If verification downloads files and the game then launches, the installation was incomplete or corrupted. If verification succeeds but disabling an overlay works, the files were sound and the conflict was external. If every game remains unavailable after cache clearing and folder repair, concentrate on the operating system, drivers, permissions, or the Steam client itself.
A failed test is still useful evidence. For example, a clean launch with mods disabled identifies a game-specific configuration even if the files are valid. Conversely, a title that fails on Windows, macOS, and Linux for different users may have a publisher-side issue; check the title’s support notices before repeatedly changing your computer.
Use the least disruptive remedy first
Cache clearing, file verification, disabling an overlay, and testing another Proton version are reversible. Driver changes and compatibility settings should be made one at a time so you can identify which change matters. Reinstalling the Steam client is a later repair, not a substitute for checking the affected game and library. Preserve the existing Steam location and local saves, and never leave antivirus or other security protection disabled merely because one launch test succeeded.
Recommended order, from safest to most disruptive
- Exit Steam, restart the computer, and test.
- Verify the affected game’s files.
- Clear Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache.
- Use Steam > Settings > Storage > library menu > Repair Folder if updates or permissions appear broken.
- Update the operating system and drivers, and compare the game with its published requirements.
- Temporarily close overlays, security tools, VPNs, monitoring utilities, and controller software.
- For one failing title, disable mods, clear launch options, and remove unnecessary compatibility settings.
- For a broken client, reinstall Steam into the existing Steam location.
- Escalate with the exact symptoms, versions, changes, and logs.

What happens when I clear Steam’s download cache?
Steam flushes locally cached download configuration and obtains it again from Steam’s servers. The client signs you out, so you must sign in again and complete any requested verification. Installed games are not automatically reinstalled, although queued downloads may need to be checked afterward.
When should I use Repair Folder instead of Clear Cache?
