If a Steam game freezes, shows a black screen, or leaves a frozen frame after you press Alt+Tab, change the game to Borderless Windowed or Borderless Fullscreen first. Then test with Steam and other overlays disabled. Those two changes address the most common display-ownership and overlay conflicts without changing system-wide graphics behavior.
There is no single confirmed Windows defect behind every Alt-Tab freeze. The transition can expose conflicts among exclusive fullscreen mode, overlay rendering, Windows graphics scheduling, Full-screen Optimizations, display drivers, multiple monitors, and damaged game files. Work through the tests below in order, changing one thing at a time so you can identify the trigger and undo changes that do not help.
Why Alt-Tab can freeze a Steam game
When a game runs in exclusive fullscreen, it has a more direct relationship with the display than the Windows desktop does. Pressing Alt+Tab transfers focus and display ownership to another application. The handoff can fail or stall while Windows, the game, the driver, and any overlay negotiate a new presentation mode.
Borderless modes use a desktop-managed window instead of repeatedly switching the display into and out of exclusive fullscreen. Steam describes the borderless approach as providing significantly more stable and user-friendly behavior for players who frequently switch in and out of a game. That makes it the best first experiment, not a guarantee that every title will behave identically.

Other possible conflict points include Steam Overlay and third-party overlays, Steam’s own GPU-accelerated web rendering, Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS), Windows Full-screen Optimizations, an outdated or mismatched graphics driver, a multi-monitor arrangement, and corrupted files in one title. These are troubleshooting hypotheses: the same symptom can have different causes on different PCs.
Identify the exact failure before changing settings
Note what happens immediately after Alt+Tab. The symptom determines which test is most informative.

Also record whether the problem occurs on the first switch or only after repeated switching, whether it happens with a single monitor, and whether closing capture or monitoring software changes it. These observations are more useful to support teams than a general statement that the game “crashes on Alt-Tab.”

1. Use Borderless Windowed or Borderless Fullscreen
Open the affected game and find its video, graphics, or display settings. Set Display Mode to Borderless Windowed, Borderless Fullscreen, or an equivalent label. Apply the setting, quit the game completely, relaunch it, and test several Alt-Tab cycles.
- Launch the game from Steam.
- Open Settings, Options, or Video.
- Locate the display-mode control and choose the borderless option rather than Exclusive Fullscreen.
- Apply the change and restart the game if it requests a restart; restarting is worthwhile even when the game does not ask.
- Switch to another window and back several times, including while a level or match is active.
Borderless mode normally makes task switching smoother because the desktop compositor remains involved. Depending on the game and system, it can alter input latency, frame pacing, or access to exclusive-display features. Compare those trade-offs after stability is established; do not assume that a small performance difference means the test failed. If borderless mode fixes the freeze, keep it for games you switch away from frequently and leave unrelated titles unchanged.

2. Disable Steam Overlay and other overlays for one test
An overlay inserts a rendering layer into the game. A conflict can appear only when the game loses focus or rebuilds its frame after returning from another window. Disable overlays temporarily rather than permanently so you can identify whether one is responsible.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click the affected game, choose Properties, and stay on General.
- Turn off Enable Steam Overlay while in-game (the wording can vary slightly by Steam client version).
- Close and relaunch the game, then repeat the same Alt-Tab test.
- If the freeze remains, temporarily disable other overlays one at a time, including Discord, Xbox Game Bar, GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App, AMD’s overlay, and any capture or performance-monitoring overlay.
Test with all overlays closed first. If that works, re-enable them individually and retest so you know which layer causes the conflict. Disabling an overlay also removes its in-game chat, recording, performance display, or shortcut features for that test; it does not uninstall the software.
3. Turn off Steam’s GPU-accelerated web rendering
If Steam windows flicker, turn black, become unresponsive, or the problem appears tied to the Steam overlay, test Steam’s own GPU acceleration. Steam documents that some video drivers have trouble rendering Steam content when GPU acceleration is enabled.
- Open Steam and select Steam > Settings.
- Open Interface.
- Turn off Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views. The exact label can vary by client version.
- Restart Steam completely, not just the game, and then test the title again.
This setting concerns Steam’s interface and web views. It is not a guaranteed fix for a game-only rendering problem, so use it when Steam itself or its overlay appears involved. If it makes no difference, restore it unless you need the setting off for another Steam-rendering issue.
4. Test Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS)
HAGS changes how Windows schedules GPU work. It can interact differently with particular drivers, games, and overlays, so treat it as a reversible diagnostic rather than a universal optimization.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select Change default graphics settings.
- Switch Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling off.
- Restart Windows; the change is not fully tested until after the restart.
- Launch the game and repeat the Alt-Tab scenario that previously froze it.
If the freeze disappears, leave HAGS off on that machine or retest after a later graphics-driver update. If nothing changes, turn it back on if you prefer its previous behavior. HAGS affects broader Windows graphics scheduling, so a fix here can influence more than the one Steam game.

Windows Full-screen Optimizations can change how a fullscreen game is presented and how it transitions to the desktop. Test the option on the specific executable rather than changing every application.
- Find the game’s executable in its installation folder. Steam’s per-game Properties page can help you locate the installed files.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Disable full-screen optimizations, choose Apply, and then OK.
- Restart the game and test Alt-Tab again.
This option is per executable. It may help a title that behaves poorly in exclusive fullscreen, but it can also change how Windows handles that game’s presentation. If borderless mode already solved the problem, you generally do not need this additional change.
6. Update the exact graphics driver, then reboot
A driver update addresses rendering and display-transition bugs that can resemble an Alt-Tab problem. Install the current driver intended for your exact GPU from its manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Avoid selecting a driver for a different model merely because the product family name looks similar.
- Identify the GPU model in Windows’ system information or Device Manager.
- Download the current driver package for that model and your Windows edition from the GPU manufacturer’s official support site.
- Install it using the manufacturer’s normal installer.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not insist on a restart.
- Test the same game, display mode, monitor arrangement, and Alt-Tab sequence.
Keep a note of the driver version before and after the update. If the issue began immediately after a driver change, the previous stable driver may be relevant to your support request; do not repeatedly install unrelated packages while troubleshooting.

7. Verify the game’s files in Steam
When only one title freezes, missing or damaged files can mimic a display-transition problem. Steam can compare the local installation with its published files and reacquire anything it identifies as damaged.
- Open Library in Steam and right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish before launching the game.
- Restart the game and repeat the Alt-Tab test.
Verification is specific to that installation; it does not repair a system-wide driver, overlay, or monitor issue. It can also restore changed files, so expect to reapply unsupported modifications if the title uses them.
8. Reduce the test to one monitor and no capture utilities
Multiple monitors add display paths, refresh rates, resolutions, and focus transitions. A capture, streaming, RGB, frame-rate, or hardware-monitoring utility can also hook the game at the moment focus changes.
- Disconnect or disable all but the primary monitor for one test session.
- Use the same resolution and refresh rate you normally use on that display.
- Exit screen-recording, streaming, frame-rate-overlay, and hardware-monitoring utilities.
- Close unnecessary background applications and test the game in borderless mode.
- Reconnect monitors and relaunch utilities one at a time if the freeze disappears.
If one-monitor testing works, compare refresh rates, HDR or adaptive-sync settings, and which monitor is marked primary. The observation does not prove that a monitor is defective; it identifies the multi-display path as a useful place for the game or driver vendor to investigate.
Compare the workarounds before choosing what to keep

What to do when the freeze remains
Only one game is affected
Keep the test focused on that title: use borderless mode, disable its Steam Overlay, verify its files, and test its executable with Full-screen Optimizations disabled. If other Steam games switch normally under the same monitor and overlay conditions, contact the game’s developer with the title, Windows edition, GPU model, driver version, display mode, monitor count, and the exact reproduction steps.

Every Steam game is affected
Prioritize shared components: disable all overlays, test Steam GPU-accelerated web rendering, test HAGS, update the GPU driver, and use one monitor with capture utilities closed. If the desktop remains usable but every game fails, Steam Support and the GPU vendor can compare your logs and driver behavior.
The entire desktop locks up
A total desktop freeze points beyond one game’s files. After recovering safely, repeat the test with one monitor and no overlays, then try the HAGS and driver steps. Record whether audio continued, whether the display recovered by itself, and whether the problem occurs outside Steam. Those details help distinguish a game-window problem from a broader graphics-driver or Windows presentation failure.
The game recovers but loses focus or changes resolution
That behavior still identifies the display transition as the trigger. Keep borderless mode as the least disruptive workaround, then test Full-screen Optimizations and overlays separately. Do not change several Windows-wide settings at once; otherwise you will not know which setting altered the result.

How to run a clean, reversible troubleshooting pass
- Write down the current display mode, overlay state, HAGS state, monitor count, GPU model, and driver version.
- Change only the game to borderless mode and retest.
- If it still freezes, disable Steam and third-party overlays and retest.
- If Steam itself looks involved, disable GPU-accelerated rendering in web views, restart Steam, and retest.
- Test HAGS and Full-screen Optimizations separately, restarting whenever Windows or the game requires it.
- Update the exact GPU driver and verify the affected game’s files.
- Finish with one monitor and background capture or monitoring utilities closed.
- Keep the smallest change that solves the problem and restore every unrelated setting.
For a support request, include the game name, whether the issue affects one or all Steam games, display mode, number of monitors, GPU model, driver version, Windows edition, overlay state, HAGS state, and whether audio continues during the freeze. A short sequence such as “exclusive fullscreen freezes on the second Alt-Tab; borderless works; Steam Overlay off makes no difference” is far more actionable than a screenshot of the frozen frame.
Bottom line
Start with borderless fullscreen, then isolate overlays. If those do not solve the freeze, test Steam’s GPU acceleration, HAGS, Full-screen Optimizations, the graphics driver, game-file integrity, and finally the monitor and background-software setup. Each change is reversible; keep only the one that produces stable switching on your particular Windows PC.
