Most Steam download and library failures can be repaired without reinstalling a game. Work through Steam’s fixes in order: restart Steam and the computer, clear the download cache, repair the library folder, verify the game’s files, and then check the download region, storage, network, and account. If a game is shown as uninstalled, add its existing library folder or begin installation in the folder that already contains the files.

Start with the symptom that matches your problem

Use this table to choose the shortest relevant path. Complete the steps in the listed order unless a step clearly does not apply.

What you see First action Next checks
A game will not start downloading Restart Steam and the computer Clear the download cache, change Download Region, then check network and disk space
“An error occurred while updating or installing” Repair the Library folder Verify files, check drive health and free space, and remove software conflicts
An installed game is marked uninstalled Start the installation while the existing folder remains in steamapps/common Add the correct library folder in Storage if it is on another disk
Games disappeared from Library Confirm the owning Steam account Remove filters, check Hidden Games, and review purchase history
Download is extremely slow or stuck Clear the download cache Temporarily change Download Region and inspect network, storage, and bandwidth settings
“Preparing to Launch” never finishes Verify files and update the operating system and drivers Disable non-essential background software and check the game’s requirements

1. Restart Steam and the computer

Close Steam completely, reopen it, and restart the computer before changing files or reinstalling anything. Steam says a restart flushes transient system state and caches, resets other programs, and releases locks on files and other resources. Those locks can prevent a download, update, or installer from writing to a library even when the drive has plenty of space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam’s menu and choose the option to exit the client, rather than only closing the window.
  2. Wait a few seconds, start Steam again, and retry the download or update.
  3. If the error remains, restart Windows, Linux, or macOS and try once more.

If this resolves the problem, no game files were changed. If it does not, continue with the download cache.

2. Clear Steam’s download cache

A damaged or stale download cache can stop games from downloading or starting. Clearing it does not remove installed games, but Steam signs you out and requires you to log in again.

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  2. Select Clear Download Cache.
  3. Confirm the prompt and sign in when Steam restarts.
  4. Open the Downloads view and start the game again.

Steam’s support wording is explicit: “This process will not affect your currently installed games, but you will need to log into Steam afterwards.” If a download remains paused or loops after signing in, inspect the library folder and storage rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

3. Repair the Steam library folder

Steam must have write access to the library folder to create, update, and remove files. Broken permissions or a folder that has become unavailable can produce installation and update errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Find the library that contains the affected game.
  3. Open its three-dot menu (…) and choose Repair Folder.
  4. Wait for the operation to finish, then retry the download or update.

Repair the specific library that stores the game; repairing a different library will not restore write access to the affected path. If the repair cannot complete, check whether the drive is connected, mounted, or reporting errors in the operating system.

4. Verify the game’s installed files

Verification compares the local installation with Steam’s expected files and replaces damaged or missing ones. It is useful after a failed update, an interrupted download, or a crash that leaves a game unable to launch.

  1. Open Library.
  2. Right-click the game and choose Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Allow the process to finish; it can take several minutes.

Do not treat every verification warning as a failure. Steam notes that “One or more files may fail to verify. This is normal for most Steam games.” Local configuration files can differ from the distributed versions and may be intentionally left unchanged. Restart the game after verification and, if Steam reports files were reacquired, let that download complete before launching.

5. Check the download region, network, and disk

Change Download Region temporarily

A regional content server may be slow or overloaded even when your internet connection works normally. You can test another region without changing the game or account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  2. Open the Download Region menu.
  3. Choose a nearby alternative region.
  4. Restart the download and compare its behavior.

Use this as a diagnostic change, not as a guarantee of higher speed. Return to a nearby reliable region when the original server recovers.

Confirm available space and write access

Steam may need more temporary working space than the final installed size while it unpacks or applies an update. Check free space on the drive that contains the library, not only the drive where the Steam client is installed. A nearly full drive can also make an update appear frozen while Steam rearranges files.

  • Make sure the library drive is visible in the operating system.
  • Confirm that your user account can create and modify files in the library folder.
  • Check whether another process is holding the game’s files open.
  • If the drive reports errors, back up important data before attempting repeated installations.

Test the connection

Pause other large downloads, cloud synchronization, and video streams while testing. Network interruptions, ISP caching or compression, and software that filters traffic can interfere with Steam’s content delivery. If every game fails on the same connection, test another network before assuming that the game or library is corrupt.

When Steam says a game is uninstalled but its files are still present

Steam can lose the library registration while the game folder remains intact. Do not delete the existing folder. The installation workflow can scan it and recover the files instead of downloading the entire game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Re-register a game in the same library

  1. Confirm that the game’s existing folder is still under the expected steamapps/common location for that library.
  2. In Steam, select the game and start Install.
  3. Choose the same library location that already contains the game.
  4. Let Steam inspect the folder. It should discover existing files and download only what is missing or outdated.

Starting the installation does not mean you should remove or rename the old folder first. If Steam proposes a different location, stop and select the library that contains the files.

Add a library located on another disk

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Select the plus (+) button.
  3. Choose the existing library folder on the other disk.
  4. After Steam adds it, return to Library and allow the client to rescan.

Installed games in the added library should reappear. If the disk is external, ensure it is connected before starting Steam and avoid unplugging it while the client is running. Steam warns that external drives can disconnect at inconvenient times; an internal drive is generally more dependable for an active game library.

When games disappear from the Steam Library

Verify the account

Sign out and check that you are using the Steam account that purchased the games. A different account can show an empty or incomplete library even though the files remain on the computer. For a recent purchase, compare the account’s purchase history with the receipt email.

Remove filters and inspect Hidden Games

  1. Open Library and remove restrictive collection, genre, or installed-only filters.
  2. Use View > Hidden Games.
  3. If the missing title is there, right-click it and choose Manage > Remove from Hidden.

Filters can hide a title without uninstalling it, while the Hidden Games view keeps deliberately concealed games out of the normal list.

Check purchase and Family Sharing status

If payment completed but a newly purchased title is absent, review purchase history, sign out, and sign back in. A “Pre-Load Complete” message generally means the files are present but the current account does not own the title or no longer has access through Family Sharing. Resolve the ownership or sharing issue before deleting local files.

Use the Download Manager to control an installation

The Download Manager shows what Steam is doing and provides controls that are easy to miss in the Library.

  • Open it with the Downloads link at the bottom of the Steam client, or use View > Downloads.
  • From a game’s Library page, select Downloads to reach the same view.
  • Inspect the queue to see whether another update is using the connection or disk.
  • Reorder queued items, pause a specific download, schedule updates, or set bandwidth limits as needed.

A game that appears stuck may simply be waiting behind another queued task or constrained by a bandwidth schedule. Check the queue before deleting files or changing the installation.

Move a game without downloading it again

Moving a game to another library can solve low-space problems or reduce reliance on an unreliable external drive. Steam can move the existing installation rather than downloading a second copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create or select the destination library in Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Open Library, right-click the game, and choose Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Choose Move Install Folder.
  5. Select the destination library and confirm.

Keep Steam open until the move completes. Verify the game afterward if it was interrupted, and make sure the destination drive has enough free space for the complete installation and temporary update work.

Fix a game stuck at “Preparing to Launch”

“Preparing to Launch” can indicate damaged files, an outdated platform component, incompatible drivers, a background-software conflict, or a system that does not meet the game’s requirements.

  1. Update Windows, Linux, or macOS through the operating system’s normal update mechanism.
  2. Install current graphics and other hardware drivers from the computer or component manufacturer.
  3. Run Verify integrity of game files from Properties > Installed Files.
  4. Temporarily disable non-essential overlays, security tools, tuning utilities, and other background software that may hook into the game.
  5. Compare the computer with the game’s published minimum and recommended requirements.

Linux-specific checks

Confirm that the game supports Linux or investigate whether its Proton compatibility configuration is appropriate. A title that lacks native support may require a different compatibility version, while a system update can also change driver or runtime behavior.

macOS-specific checks

Update macOS and check firewall or background-software conflicts. Also confirm that the game supports the installed macOS version and the Mac’s hardware architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair Steam without deleting installed games

If Steam itself is damaged, reinstalling the client to the same location can repair client files while preserving installed games. Protect the game and user-data folders before taking this step.

  1. Close Steam completely.
  2. Make a backup copy of the steamapps and userdata folders.
  3. Reinstall Steam to the same installation location.
  4. Start Steam and sign in.
  5. Check Settings > Storage and add a library folder if it is not detected automatically.

Do not uninstall Steam through an unrelated method or delete its folders first. Steam warns that other uninstall methods can remove game and userdata content. A backup gives you a recovery path if the client does not rediscover a library immediately.

When the usual fixes fail: hardware and software causes

Steam lists corrupted storage, RAM errors, ISP caching or compression, and software conflicts among causes that may require advanced troubleshooting. Use the symptom pattern to decide what to test next.

  • Only one game fails: verify that game’s files, check its requirements, and look for a game-specific background-software conflict.
  • Every game fails on one library: repair that folder, inspect the drive’s health, and test another library location.
  • Downloads fail on every library: clear the cache, change Download Region, test the network, and check filtering or security software.
  • Files vanish after every reboot: investigate drive disconnections, failing storage, or an external enclosure that is not staying mounted.
  • Installation errors appear alongside system crashes or corrupted archives: test system memory and storage before repeatedly downloading large games.

Make one change at a time and retry the same operation. This identifies the cause and avoids confusing a successful repair with a coincidental restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical prevention checklist

  • Keep adequate free space on the library drive for updates and temporary unpacking.
  • Use an internal drive for libraries that must remain available, especially if an external drive frequently disconnects.
  • Close Steam cleanly before shutting down or disconnecting a library drive.
  • Review the Downloads queue and bandwidth schedule when a title appears idle.
  • Keep the operating system and hardware drivers current for games that hang before launch.
  • Back up steamapps and userdata before repairing or reinstalling the Steam client.
  • When a game is marked uninstalled, preserve its existing folder and let Steam’s Install process scan it.

Recommended order in one pass

  1. Restart Steam and the computer.
  2. Clear Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then sign in again.
  3. Repair the affected library through Settings > Storage > … > Repair Folder.
  4. Verify the game through Library > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Change Download Region temporarily and check network, free space, drive health, and software conflicts.
  6. If the game is marked uninstalled, start installation in its existing steamapps/common folder or add the correct library.
  7. If titles are missing from Library, confirm the account, remove filters, inspect Hidden Games, and check purchase history.
  8. For “Preparing to Launch,” update the operating system and drivers, verify files, disable non-essential software, and confirm requirements.
  9. Only then consider reinstalling Steam, with backups of steamapps and userdata in place.
