When Steam shows a Cloud Save and Local Save conflict, it has found two different file states. Do not click through the prompt at random: quit the game, let Steam finish any pending synchronization, copy the local save folder somewhere safe, and compare the modification times and device history. Keep the newest trustworthy version, then allow Steam to synchronize that version.

If progress is missing, close the game before creating new saves. Check the game’s local save folder, restore a backed-up copy with Steam Cloud temporarily disabled, or download the cloud copy and verify it in-game. Steam cannot recreate progress that was never uploaded, so preserve every remaining copy and contact Steam Support when neither version contains the expected data.

What a Steam Cloud sync conflict means

Steam Cloud synchronizes supported game files before and after play sessions. When you exit, changed files can upload; when you resume on another device, Steam can restore the cloud version there. A conflict appears when Steam detects that the local files on the current computer and the files stored in Cloud do not represent the same state.

The dialog normally presents two choices: a Cloud Save and a Local Save, each with a modification time. The names do not mean that one is automatically safer. A cloud copy may be older than the save on the computer you played most recently, while a local copy may be an old file left on a second machine. The timestamp, the device where the progress was made, and an in-game check are the evidence you need.

Valve’s 2025 Steamworks presentation describes conflicts as automatically detected. It also reports that roughly half of Steam users played a game on more than one device during the preceding year, which is why a reliable decision process matters when switching computers or handhelds.

What to do before choosing local or cloud save

1. Stop new writes

  1. Quit the game normally.
  2. Wait for Steam to finish any pending sync indicator before closing or restarting the client.
  3. Do not launch the game repeatedly while deciding. Every launch can create new files or change modification times, making the original evidence harder to interpret.

Steamworks documents synchronization around game sessions: files can be synchronized before and after a session, and changed files upload after the session ends. Stopping now prevents an automatic upload from replacing the version you are trying to evaluate.

2. Make an independent copy of the local save

Find the game’s local save folder and copy the entire folder, including subfolders and files with unfamiliar extensions, to a different location. A USB flash drive is a simple optional destination; another internal folder is better than having no backup, but it does not protect against a disk failure. Give the copy a descriptive name such as the game title plus the date and computer name.

Do this before changing Steam Cloud settings or selecting either side of the conflict. Valve Support has warned that if the desired save is overwritten, it is unlikely to be restored unless it was backed up manually beforehand. Keep the original folder untouched until the restored version has been opened and verified in the game.

How to read the conflict dialog

Steam’s conflict screen compares a Cloud Save with a Local Save and shows their modification times. Treat those times as a starting point, not as an automatic verdict. Check which computer or handheld you used, whether the file represents a completed session, and whether an independent backup exists.

Decision factor Local Save Cloud Save How to use it
Modification time Time shown for files on the current computer Time shown for files stored by Steam Cloud Prefer the newest time that matches a session in which you made the progress you want.
Device history Progress created on the computer currently running Steam Progress uploaded from this or another device Identify where you last played successfully; a later timestamp on an unused device may not contain the expected run.
In-game result Can be tested only after preserving the files and selecting or restoring them Can be tested after Steam downloads the cloud copy Verify the expected character, level, chapter, or settings before continuing normal play.
Independent backup Can be copied to a separate folder or drive before selection May be the only remaining copy if the local folder is empty Preserve both candidates whenever possible; the copy not kept may be overwritten during synchronization.

Valve’s official 2024 guidance says, “Please do not choose to overwrite your save!” It also instructs players to check the timestamp and choose the most recent one. In practical terms, choose the newest trustworthy copy, not merely the newest date. A file created after a crash, a test launch, or an accidental reset may be newer but contain less progress.

Should I choose local or cloud save?

Choose Local Save when

  • The local timestamp is later than the cloud timestamp and matches your most recent successful session.
  • You played on this computer after the last known cloud upload.
  • The local folder contains the expected files and you have copied them to a safe location.

Choose Cloud Save when

  • The cloud timestamp is later and corresponds to a session on another computer or handheld.
  • The current local files are clearly old, empty, corrupted, or the result of starting a new game.
  • You have preserved the local folder and want Steam to download the known-good cloud state.

When the timestamps do not settle the question

Use your play history and the game itself. Ask which device you used last, whether you reached a checkpoint or changed a setting during that session, and whether the save can be opened after restoration. If both copies appear important, do not discard either one. Keep the backup, select the candidate that best matches your most recent intended progress, and verify it before making another save.

The version you select is synchronized to the device and to Steam Cloud. The version you do not keep can be overwritten as part of that process. That is why the independent copy made before selection is the recovery point if the first choice proves wrong.

How to recover a missing Steam save

1. Close the game before creating replacement progress

If a game opens at the beginning, shows an empty profile, or reports that no save exists, exit immediately. Do not play far enough to create a new save; doing so can upload the empty state and complicate recovery. Leave the game closed while you inspect the local files.

2. Inspect the local save folder

Use the game’s support documentation to identify its exact folder and filenames. Common platform roots are listed below, but each developer chooses the final directory, profile name, and file extension. Look for files with dates matching your last successful session, as well as rotating backups, profiles, or numbered slots.

Platform Common save roots used by Steam games
Windows Documents; AppDataLocal; AppDataLocalLow; AppDataRoaming; Saved Games
macOS Your home folder; Library/Application Support; Documents
Linux Your home folder and XDG data locations

Steamworks identifies these as common path families, not a universal location. A game can store settings in one directory and saves in another, and two games from the same publisher can use different names. If the game’s documentation gives a path, use that path instead of guessing.

3. Restore a usable local copy

  1. Keep Steam Cloud disabled temporarily for that game using its Steam library properties. The option is normally in the game’s General settings; wording can vary with the Steam client version.
  2. Copy the backed-up save files into the expected local folder. Preserve the folder structure and the original filenames unless the game’s documentation specifically requires a different name.
  3. Start the game once while synchronization is disabled and check the profile, chapter, character, or other unmistakable progress marker.
  4. Exit normally after verification.
  5. Re-enable Steam Cloud for the game. When Steam presents the next conflict, choose the restored local version so it becomes the synchronized copy.

Do not delete the backup while testing. If the game still shows no progress, close it, restore the untouched backup again, and confirm that you are using the correct account, profile slot, and platform-specific folder before trying another selection.

4. Restore from Cloud when the local copy is unusable

If the local folder is empty or its files are clearly older, allow Steam to download the cloud copy. Launch the game once, without making additional changes, and verify the expected progress. If it is correct, exit normally and resume regular play. If the downloaded profile is also missing the progress, preserve the local folder and the downloaded files rather than repeatedly launching the game.

5. Know when Steam Cloud cannot help

Cloud synchronization can only restore data that was uploaded successfully. If neither the local files nor the cloud copy contains the missing progress, Steam Cloud cannot recreate it. Keep every remaining file, including your independent backup and any downloaded copy, and escalate the case to Steam Support.

Temporarily disabling and re-enabling Steam Cloud safely

Disabling Cloud is a controlled recovery measure, not a repair by itself. In Steam, open the game’s library properties and use the per-game Steam Cloud control rather than changing synchronization for your entire library. Make the local restoration while Cloud is off so Steam cannot upload an empty or unverified profile.

After the game opens the restored save, exit normally and turn the control back on. Steam may show a new conflict because the local files now differ from the cloud copy. Select the restored local version only after checking its timestamp and confirming the in-game progress. Leave the backup untouched until the game has synchronized and opened correctly on the device you intend to use.

Why a conflict can keep returning

The game was launched on more than one device

Playing before the previous device finishes uploading can leave two legitimate sessions with different times. Finish a session normally, wait for the sync to complete, and then start the game on the next device.

A new or empty profile was uploaded

Starting a game while the expected folder is missing can create fresh files. If that happens, stop playing, preserve the older folder or backup, and use the restoration sequence with Cloud temporarily disabled.

The game is using a different save path or account

Check the game’s documented path, the Steam account currently signed in, and the profile or slot selected inside the game. A valid save in the wrong directory will look missing even though the files are present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Files are being changed after the session

Cloud uploads changed files after the game exits. Mods, cleanup tools, security software, or a forced shutdown can alter or remove files during that period. Exit normally, wait for Steam to finish, and avoid utilities that relocate the save folder while troubleshooting.

The conflict dialog appears on every launch

Stop making new saves and keep both versions. Record the timestamps shown, the device used for each session, and the exact error text. Repeatedly selecting one side without a backup can overwrite the only useful copy. If the cycle continues after a verified restoration, contact Steam Support rather than deleting files at random.

What to include in a Steam Support request

Steam Support’s Steam Cloud guidance provides troubleshooting information and a support-ticket path. Give the support agent enough evidence to distinguish a missing upload from a local-path problem:

  • Game title and AppID, if you know it.
  • Operating system and the device on which the progress was last visible.
  • The exact conflict or synchronization error text.
  • The Cloud Save and Local Save timestamps shown by Steam.
  • Which copy you selected, whether Cloud was disabled during restoration, and what the game displayed afterward.
  • Screenshots of the conflict dialog and any logs requested by Support.
  • A description of every surviving save folder and backup, without deleting or renaming the originals.

Support may ask for additional files or logs. Follow those requests while retaining your untouched backup; do not send the only copy of a save unless Support explicitly requires it and you have another copy.

How Steam Cloud’s scale affects recovery expectations

Valve’s 2025 presentation says Steam Cloud stores about 40 petabytes across roughly 40 billion files, with data centers in 31 countries. That scale explains why synchronization is useful across devices, but it does not turn Cloud into an unlimited version-history system. A newer empty or damaged file can still become the synchronized state, and a file that never uploaded is not available for download.

Preventing the next missing-save incident

  • At the end of a session, exit through the game’s normal quit command and wait for Steam’s sync indicator to finish.
  • Before moving to another device, make sure the previous session has completed synchronization.
  • Keep periodic manual copies of important save folders, especially before changing mods, reinstalling a game, or switching operating systems.
  • When a conflict appears, save a copy first and compare times instead of choosing the first button offered.
  • After a restoration, open the game and verify a recognizable progress marker before deleting any backup.
  • Record the game’s save location so you can find it quickly if the profile appears empty.

A concise decision checklist

  1. Quit the game and wait for Steam’s pending sync to finish.
  2. Copy the entire local save folder to a separate location.
  3. Read the Cloud Save and Local Save timestamps.
  4. Match each timestamp to the device and session that created it.
  5. Keep the newest trustworthy copy and preserve the other candidate.
  6. If progress is missing, inspect the game-specific local folder before launching again.
  7. For a local restoration, disable that game’s Cloud control, copy the backup into place, verify in-game, then re-enable Cloud and choose the restored local copy.
  8. For a cloud restoration, let Steam download the cloud copy and verify the progress before continuing.
  9. If neither version contains the save, retain all files and contact Steam Support with the timestamps, error text, operating system, game name, and screenshots or logs requested.
