Most apparent crashes in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer on Steam Deck have a specific explanation and a short first response: wait through first-launch shader compilation, press B if the invisible Epic Online Services (EOS) overlay appears to hang, and turn DLSS Resolution Scaling off—especially when it is paired with DLAA. For a dependable starting point, use a 30-FPS cap at 1280×800 with TSR and Frame Generation disabled, then test a race and a hub separately.

These steps address different failure modes. A gray screen during the first boot is not the same problem as hub-area hitching, and FPS that collapses after 25 minutes should be documented as a long-session symptom rather than automatically labeled a memory leak.

Use this order to identify the problem

Change one thing at a time so you can tell which symptom you fixed. The sequence below starts with the least disruptive checks and ends with evidence you can send to support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update SteamOS, the game and Proton. Restart the Deck after updates finish.
  2. On the first launch, allow shader work to finish. A gray or white fullscreen window can remain visible for several minutes.
  3. Press B once if the game appears stuck on the EOS overlay. Wait briefly before force-closing.
  4. Disable DLSS Resolution Scaling. Test with DLAA disabled as well while isolating stutter.
  5. Start from a conservative 30-FPS profile. Use 1280×800, TSR and Frame Generation Off.
  6. Test both a race and a hub/on-foot area. Record where the hitch occurs.
  7. If performance decays during a long session, restart and record the conditions.
  8. Submit a bug report when the symptom persists. Include the details listed in the diagnostic section.

Before changing graphics settings

Install pending updates

On the Deck, open Settings > System, install any available SteamOS update and reboot if requested. In your library, install the latest game update. If you have selected a compatibility tool manually, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility page and verify that your chosen Proton version is current enough for your setup. Do not assume that one Proton build fixes every Deck installation: a Valve Proton report shows that a newer NVIDIA driver allowed one Linux user to load the game after waiting for shader compilation, but that observation is not a universal Deck guarantee.

Use a repeatable test

For each change, note whether you are in a race, a hub, a menu or the first boot after an update. Also note the display resolution, upscaling mode, DLAA state, Frame Generation state and elapsed play time. This prevents a smooth race from masking a hub-only problem or a fresh restart from masking degradation that returns later.

Gray or white screen on first launch

Why it can look like a crash

Valve’s Proton issue #10228 describes a gray fullscreen window while a hidden splash window compiles shaders, followed by an “Application hung” message. Shader compilation can therefore make the game appear unresponsive even though startup work is still occurring. A commenter on that report said newer NVIDIA drivers allowed the game to load after waiting a couple of minutes; that is evidence of a driver-sensitive Linux case, not a promise that a particular Deck driver or Proton release will solve every launch.

What to do

  1. Launch the game while the Deck is connected to power or has sufficient battery.
  2. If the screen is gray or white and there is no clear crash dialog, leave the game open for several minutes. An unofficial 2026 Deck guide describes a roughly two-to-three-minute first boot; treat that as an estimate, not a measured standard.
  3. Avoid repeatedly force-closing during this phase. Interrupting shader work can make it harder to tell a real launch failure from a slow first compilation.
  4. If the game eventually reaches its menu, close it normally once and launch again. Later launches may behave differently after shader data has been created or updated.
  5. If the screen remains unchanged well beyond the initial wait, restart the Deck, verify updates, and try again before changing several graphics options at once.

The first-launch wait is most relevant after installing the game, changing Proton, updating graphics software or otherwise invalidating cached shaders. It does not explain every later freeze.

When the EOS overlay appears to hang

The documented Deck workaround

In its October 6, 2026 known-issues notice, the developer says: “The EOS overlay will not display on Steam Deck, making the game appear to hang. Press ‘B’ to cancel and return to the game.” This is a separate condition from shader compilation.

  1. Press the physical B button once.
  2. Wait briefly for control to return to the game.
  3. Continue only if the game responds. Do not press several buttons repeatedly while the overlay is closing.
  4. Force-close and restart only when the game still does not return after a reasonable wait.

If pressing B consistently returns you to the game, report that exact sequence in a support ticket. It helps distinguish an invisible overlay from a rendering or performance crash.

Stuttering caused by DLSS Resolution Scaling and DLAA

The setting combination to remove first

Developer support identified a specific trigger: “The stuttering begins immediately when DLSS Resolution Scaling with DLAA is enabled.” The same investigation states, “Disabling Resolution Scaling immediately removes the stuttering,” and recommends keeping Resolution Scaling set to Off as a temporary workaround.

  1. Open the game’s graphics or display settings.
  2. Set DLSS Resolution Scaling to Off.
  3. If DLAA is a separate option, turn DLAA Off while testing.
  4. Apply the settings and return to the same location where you noticed the hitching.
  5. Keep Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction off during the first comparison. Support’s investigation found that those options did not change the reported result, but leaving them off removes extra variables.

If stutter disappears immediately after Resolution Scaling is disabled, keep that setting off until a game update documents a correction. Re-enable options one at a time later; otherwise you cannot identify which combination brought the problem back.

Why hubs can stutter when races are smooth

Players report smooth racing alongside hitching in hubs or on-foot sections. That pattern points to location-specific frame pacing rather than proof that the entire Deck is underperforming. It also means a single race is not a sufficient performance test.

Run two controlled tests

  1. Load one race and drive long enough to encounter a normal lap’s effects, opponents and camera movement. Note whether motion is consistently paced.
  2. Return to a hub or on-foot area and walk through the same type of space for several minutes.
  3. Record whether the hitch appears only in the hub, only during races, or everywhere.

Include that distinction in any support report. “Smooth races, stuttering hub” is more actionable than a single overall FPS complaint, because it identifies the game area in which frame pacing changes.

A stable starting profile for Steam Deck

No authoritative Steam Deck average-FPS benchmark was established for this game. The following is an unofficial starting profile from a 2026 Deck guide, not an official Valve-certified preset:

Option Starting value Why use it while troubleshooting
Resolution 1280×800 Matches the Deck’s native panel and avoids testing an unnecessarily higher render target.
Frame-rate target 30 FPS A conservative frame-time goal for comparing race and hub behavior; it is guidance, not a canonical measured average.
Upscaling TSR The unofficial guide’s recommended baseline while isolating other variables.
DLSS Resolution Scaling Off Developer support identifies this as the temporary workaround for the DLSS-with-DLAA stutter trigger.
DLAA Off during testing Removes the documented DLSS Resolution Scaling plus DLAA combination from the test.
Frame Generation Off Leaves latency and generated-frame behavior out of the initial diagnosis.
Ray Reconstruction Off during testing Support’s investigation found no change to the reported stutter, but disabling it keeps the comparison simple.

After this profile is stable, raise image-quality or frame-rate settings individually. If a change causes a problem, return to the last known-good value instead of changing several options simultaneously. A 30-FPS target does not mean every scene will hold 30 FPS; it is a controlled baseline for finding the cause.

FPS collapse after several races or a long session

What has actually been reported

A Steam discussion describes FPS dropping sharply after three or four races. Another report says the game becomes unplayable after about 25 minutes. Closing the game—and in some cases Steam—or restarting the Deck temporarily restores performance. These are community observations, not a confirmed memory-leak diagnosis, so do not treat a restart as proof of the underlying cause.

Recovery procedure

  1. Exit to the game’s menu and close the game normally if possible.
  2. Launch it again and check whether the original performance returns.
  3. If it does not, quit Steam as well, reopen it and retry.
  4. Restart the Deck when the slowdown survives a game and Steam restart.
  5. Before relaunching, write down elapsed play time, number of races, location where the slowdown began, resolution, upscaling mode, DLAA and DLSS states, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction states.

Repeat the same workload after the restart. If the collapse returns at a similar time, that timing is valuable evidence for support even though it does not establish a leak. Avoid claiming a permanent fix when the restart only recovers performance temporarily.

Use a symptom decision tree

The first visible symptom usually tells you which branch to test. A gray or white fullscreen window immediately after installation or an update belongs to the shader branch: wait, then retry after the cache has been created. A prompt or apparent overlay freeze that clears with one B press belongs to the EOS branch. Stutter that starts as soon as DLSS Resolution Scaling and DLAA are enabled belongs to the settings branch; turn Resolution Scaling off before changing quality options. Smooth races paired with hitching while walking in a hub belong to the frame-pacing branch and should be reported by location. A sudden decline after several races or roughly 25 minutes belongs to the long-session branch; restart and capture timing rather than assigning a cause.

These branches can overlap. For example, a fresh launch can first spend minutes compiling shaders and then expose hub hitching once you enter the game. Resolve the startup delay before comparing frame pacing, and use the same location and workload for each settings test.

How to make a useful reproduction log

Use a short, repeatable script instead of relying on memory. Write down the time of launch, when the menu appears, the first race start, the first hub visit and the moment any hitch or FPS drop begins. Note whether the Deck was restarted, whether Steam was restarted separately, and whether the problem returned after reopening the game. Record every graphics change in order, especially the state of Resolution Scaling, DLAA, TSR, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction. A log that says “stutters in hub at 18 minutes, disappears with Resolution Scaling Off, returns when re-enabled” is more useful than “low FPS.”

Do not compare a freshly restarted Deck with a session that has already completed multiple races and then conclude that a setting fixed the problem. Keep the workload, area and elapsed time comparable. If the symptom is intermittent, repeat the same test at least once and report that it did not reproduce consistently.

Settings comparisons that reveal the cause

Comparison Test A Test B Interpretation
Resolution scaling DLSS Resolution Scaling with DLAA Resolution Scaling Off, DLAA Off Immediate improvement in B matches the developer-documented stutter trigger.
Game area Race Hub or on-foot section Hitching only in B suggests a location-specific frame-pacing issue.
Session length Fresh launch After three or four races or about 25 minutes A repeatable decline indicates a long-session symptom; it does not prove the cause.
Launch state First boot after install or update Later boot after shader work A delay limited to A is consistent with first-launch shader compilation.
Image quality and stability Higher target or additional reconstruction features 30 FPS, 1280×800, TSR, Frame Generation Off Use B as the controlled baseline before trading stability for quality.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

  • Force-closing immediately on a gray screen: wait through the initial shader period first when there is no clear crash dialog.
  • Pressing buttons repeatedly at an EOS prompt: press B once, then wait.
  • Testing only a race: walk through a hub as well, because reports distinguish those areas.
  • Changing every graphics option at once: disable Resolution Scaling first, then compare before changing anything else.
  • Calling long-session degradation a memory leak: describe the timing and recovery behavior without assigning an unconfirmed cause.
  • Expecting a universal FPS number: no authoritative Deck average was established; use the 30-FPS profile as a troubleshooting target only.
  • Buying hardware as a first response: no physical accessory, storage upgrade, cooling device, power accessory or input hardware is established as necessary or reliably effective for these documented faults.

Do you need extra hardware?

No tested dock, external display, storage upgrade, cooling accessory, charger, controller or other physical add-on is established as a required or reliably effective fix for these symptoms. The documented actions are software and workflow changes: update SteamOS, the game and Proton; wait for shader compilation; cancel the invisible EOS overlay with B; disable Resolution Scaling; and compare races with hubs. Spend nothing on accessories until the problem has been reproduced with those variables controlled.

When and how to contact support

The developer’s known-issues notice links to its Customer Support Centre and asks players to submit a bug report when their symptom is not listed. Escalate after updates, the shader wait, the EOS B-button step and the Resolution Scaling test fail to explain or improve the problem.

  • Whether pressing B returned control.
  • Race versus hub/on-foot behavior.

What to expect after troubleshooting

A first-launch shader wait may resolve itself on later launches. The EOS overlay condition has a specific input workaround: B cancels it and returns to the game. DLSS Resolution Scaling with DLAA should remain disabled while the documented stutter persists. Hub hitching can remain even when racing is smooth, and a restart can temporarily recover a long-session FPS collapse without identifying its root cause. Those outcomes are different, so keep the relevant workaround rather than assuming one setting fixes every symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Galactic Racer hang on a gray or white screen on Steam Deck?

The first launch can be compiling shaders in a hidden splash window. Leave the game open for several minutes; an unofficial 2026 Deck guide estimates about two to three minutes. If it still does not proceed, restart, verify updates and try again. A gray screen is not proof of a permanent crash.

What should I do when the EOS overlay appears frozen?

Press the physical B button once, then wait briefly. The developer’s October 6, 2026 known-issues notice says the EOS overlay does not display on Steam Deck and that B cancels it and returns to the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does stuttering start when I enable DLSS and DLAA?

Developer support identified DLSS Resolution Scaling with DLAA as an immediate stutter trigger. Set Resolution Scaling to Off and test with DLAA Off. Keep Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction off while isolating the result.

Why are races smooth but hubs or on-foot areas choppy?

Players report that pattern as a location-specific frame-pacing problem. Test one race and then walk through a hub, and include the difference in your support report rather than quoting one overall FPS number.

Why does FPS collapse after a few races?

Community reports describe a sharp drop after three or four races or about 25 minutes. Closing the game, Steam or restarting the Deck can restore performance temporarily. Record timing and settings; the cause has not been confirmed as a memory leak.

What Steam Deck settings should I start with?

Use 1280×800, a 30-FPS target, TSR, DLSS Resolution Scaling Off, DLAA Off during testing, Frame Generation Off and Ray Reconstruction Off. This is unofficial troubleshooting guidance, not an authoritative benchmark or Valve-certified preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with updates and patience: first-launch shader compilation can look like a crash, and the invisible EOS overlay is canceled with one B press. For stutter, disable DLSS Resolution Scaling—especially with DLAA—and compare a race with a hub. Use 1280×800, TSR and a 30-FPS target as an unofficial baseline. If FPS collapses after several races, restart and document the timing; do not assume a memory leak or buy hardware without evidence.
