Most Spotify podcast failures come down to one of four checks: the internet connection, download eligibility, available storage, or Spotify’s local app data. Start by testing another song or podcast, then verify that you are online, have at least 1 GB of free memory, and are downloading to an eligible account. Use Spotify’s Offline Mode when you need to force playback from saved episodes. Reinstall only after those checks, because reinstalling removes existing downloads.

The steps below separate streaming problems from download problems, explain why saved episodes can disappear, and show when an Android SD card is actually relevant.

Start by identifying what is failing

Before changing settings, establish whether Spotify cannot play anything, cannot play one episode, or cannot complete downloads. The distinction determines the next check.

What you observe Most useful first check What it suggests
No Spotify song or podcast plays Test the internet connection and try another network A connection, service, or app-wide problem is more likely than a single-show issue
Other content plays, but one episode does not Try another episode from the same show and repeat the general checks The episode or feed may have an availability problem; Spotify’s published guidance does not establish one universal cause for a single-feed failure
Streaming works, but a download is stuck Confirm account eligibility, stay online, and check storage The download request is being blocked by account, connection, storage, or local-app conditions
Previously downloaded episodes are gone Reconnect Spotify, update the app, and check device limits Spotify lists a 30-day offline period, more than five devices, reinstalling, an outdated app, or a malfunctioning SD card as possible causes

Test another item

  1. Play a different Spotify song or podcast.
  2. If that also fails, check Wi-Fi or mobile data before troubleshooting the individual episode.
  3. If other content works, retry the affected episode and test another episode from its show. Keep the possibility of a show-specific availability problem in mind rather than assuming the whole app is broken.

Confirm that the episode can be downloaded

Spotify’s account rules differ by content type. Premium users can download albums, playlists, and podcasts. Free users can download podcasts. If you are trying to save music with a free account, the download will not behave like a podcast download.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Start the download while online

  1. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data network.
  2. Open the podcast and select the download control for the episode.
  3. Leave Spotify open long enough for the download to begin and finish. A downloaded indicator appears when Spotify has saved the item.

Spotify uses Wi-Fi for downloads by default. To permit downloads over cellular data on a phone or tablet, open Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline > Downloads and streaming and enable the relevant cellular-download option. Cellular downloads can consume a large amount of data, so use Wi-Fi unless you have checked your mobile plan.

Check the account and device context

  • Make sure you are signed in to the account that has the subscription or podcast-download access you intend to use.
  • Do not start the same download on more devices when the account is already at its device allowance.
  • If an episode is available for streaming but has no usable download control, treat that as an eligibility or availability issue rather than a storage problem.

Free storage and background cleanup

Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory for downloads. That is free space on the device, not merely space inside Spotify’s cache. When storage is nearly full, a download may remain pending, stop partway through, or fail without a clear explanation.

Make room and retry

  1. Check the device’s storage screen and remove or move large files if free space is below Spotify’s recommendation.
  2. Close Spotify completely and open it again.
  3. Retry the episode while the device is online.

Also disable automated cache-clearing, “phone cleaner,” or aggressive battery-saving tools that remove Spotify data in the background. Those utilities can delete local download files even when Spotify itself is working normally. If downloads repeatedly vanish after a cleanup routine runs, exempt Spotify from that routine before downloading again.

Use Offline Mode when you need downloaded playback

Turning off Wi-Fi or mobile data does not always tell Spotify to restrict itself to local files. The app may continue trying to load online content and appear unable to play. Spotify states that downloads play automatically when you lose internet, but that you can use Offline Mode to make sure only your downloads play.

On a phone or tablet

  1. Open your profile menu.
  2. Select Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline.
  3. Switch Offline mode on.

In Offline Mode, items that are not downloaded are grayed out. A grayed-out episode is therefore not a playback failure: it is content that is not available locally.

On desktop

  1. Open Spotify’s application menu.
  2. Select Offline Mode.
  3. Play an episode that was completely downloaded before the connection was lost.

If the episode still does not play in Offline Mode, it was probably not fully downloaded, the local data is damaged, or the item was removed from the device. Return to the online checks and download it again before considering a reinstall.

Why downloaded podcasts disappear

Spotify lists several specific reasons saved content can become unavailable. Check them in this order so you do not erase working downloads unnecessarily.

You have been offline too long

The account must connect to Spotify at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. Spotify’s Premium information says downloads become unavailable after 30 days offline until the library reconnects and synchronizes. Reconnect the device, open Spotify, and allow the library to synchronize before attempting another download.

The account is using too many devices

Spotify’s current support figures state a limit of up to 10,000 tracks per device and downloads on up to five devices. Its current Premium information describes up to 10,000 songs on each of five devices, or up to 50,000 total. These figures are account limits stated by Spotify; they are not a promise that every podcast episode will fit under an identical per-show rule.

If you have downloaded content on more than five devices, remove downloads or sign out of an old device, then reconnect the device you want to keep using and download the episode again.

The app was reinstalled

Reinstalling deletes Spotify’s local download files. Even when your library, follows, and playlists return after signing in, every downloaded podcast must be downloaded again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app is out of date

Update Spotify through the device’s normal app store or desktop installation channel. An outdated build can lose compatibility with current playback or download behavior. Restart Spotify after updating and retry the episode.

An SD card is malfunctioning

This cause applies only to Android devices that actually use removable storage for Spotify data. A failing or incorrectly mounted card can make saved episodes disappear or prevent new downloads. It is not relevant to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or an Android phone that stores Spotify data internally.

When replacing an SD card can help

Consider the SD-card branch only after confirming that your Android device is configured to use removable storage and that the problem follows the card. Symptoms include downloads disappearing after a restart, repeated download failures despite adequate free space, or other files on the card becoming unreadable.

What a replacement can and cannot fix

  • A compatible microSD card can help when the existing card is failing or has corrupted storage.
  • Replacing the card will not repair a bad internet connection, an account device-limit problem, an expired 30-day offline period, or an episode that is unavailable from its feed.
  • Spotify downloads are app-managed local data. Plan to download episodes again after changing cards rather than expecting the old download files to transfer as playable media.

Use a card that your Android device supports for capacity and speed. After installing it, let Android recognize the card, reopen Spotify, and download one test episode before filling the card with a large queue. If the same failure occurs with internal storage or a known-good card, stop treating the SD card as the cause and return to the account, connection, and app checks.

Restart and clear local data before a clean reinstall

A normal restart is the least destructive repair. Close Spotify, restart the device, open the app, and retry the episode while connected. If that does not help, clear Spotify’s cache using the app or operating system controls available on your platform. Cache clearing removes temporary files; it is different from clearing storage or deleting the app.

Spotify recommends a quick reinstall when playback still fails. A clean reinstall goes further by removing residual local data, then installing a fresh copy. This can repair persistent app-data problems, but it also removes all existing Spotify downloads.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Use Spotify’s cache-clearing control first.
  2. Open the device’s storage settings, select Spotify, and delete the app from iPhone or iPad Storage.
  3. Restart the device.
  4. Reinstall Spotify from the App Store.
  5. Sign in, reconnect your library, and download the podcast episodes again.

Android 6.0 and later

  1. In Android’s app settings, clear Spotify’s storage and cache. Clearing storage signs you out and removes local downloads.
  2. Uninstall Spotify.
  3. Check internal storage and the SD card for a remaining com.spotify.music folder and remove it if it is still present.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Install Spotify again from Google Play.
  6. Sign in and download the episodes again.

Do not remove the folder while Spotify is installed or while a download is running. The purpose of this step is to remove residual data after uninstalling, not to relocate playable podcast files.

Mac

  1. Remove Spotify from the Applications folder.
  2. Delete com.spotify.client and com.spotify.client.helper from the user Caches folder.
  3. Delete the Spotify folder from Application Support.
  4. Restart the Mac.
  5. Install Spotify again using the normal Spotify desktop installer.
  6. Sign in and redownload the episodes.

Windows 10 and later

  1. Open Apps and Features in Windows Settings.
  2. Uninstall Spotify.
  3. Install it again from the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s Windows installer.
  4. Sign in and download the podcast episodes again.

A practical decision path

Step Do this Stop or continue based on the result
1. Scope the failure Play another song or podcast If nothing plays, repair the connection first; if only one episode fails, continue but allow for show-specific availability
2. Verify eligibility Confirm the account can download podcasts and start while online If the download control is unavailable, resolve account or episode availability before changing storage
3. Check network settings Use Wi-Fi or enable cellular downloads at Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline > Downloads and streaming Retry once the download starts and the downloaded indicator appears
4. Check space Keep at least 1 GB free and disable cleaners that remove Spotify data Restart Spotify and retry
5. Force local playback Turn on Offline Mode from the mobile/tablet data-saving settings or the desktop Spotify menu Grayed-out items are not downloaded; download them again online
6. Investigate vanished downloads Reconnect within 30 days, update Spotify, check the five-device allowance, and assess SD-card health on compatible Android devices Redownload after correcting the cause
7. Repair app data Restart, clear cache, then use the platform’s clean-reinstall procedure if necessary Expect to download every podcast again after reinstalling

What not to do

  • Do not assume that disabling mobile data is the same as enabling Offline Mode.
  • Do not replace an SD card on a device that has no removable storage.
  • Do not reinstall before checking storage, because reinstalling removes downloads that may otherwise be recoverable.
  • Do not interpret one unavailable episode as proof that all Spotify downloads are broken; test other content first.
  • Do not rely on a cache-cleaning or battery-saving utility that silently deletes Spotify’s local files.

When to contact Spotify support

Contact Spotify after the connection, eligibility, storage, Offline Mode, account-limit, update, and reinstall checks fail, especially when multiple devices reproduce the same episode-specific problem. Include the device platform and operating-system version, Spotify app version, whether other shows play, whether the episode ever showed a downloaded indicator, and whether the account had been offline for 30 days. Those details distinguish a local storage problem from a show or account availability issue without deleting more data than necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an SD card relevant if I use Spotify on an iPhone or computer?

No. Spotify’s SD-card failure guidance applies to Android devices that use removable storage. iPhones, iPads, Macs, Windows PCs, and Android devices storing Spotify data internally need the connection, storage, account, update, and app-data checks instead.

Will a new microSD card preserve my existing Spotify podcast downloads?

Plan on downloading the episodes again. Spotify downloads are app-managed local data, so changing the card is a storage repair, not a supported way to transfer playable episode files.

Why does Spotify show a gray episode in Offline Mode?

Offline Mode displays undownloaded items as gray. The episode must be downloaded while online before it can play without a connection.
