Start with Sony’s soft reset: hold the POWER button on the supplied remote for at least five seconds, then wait about one minute for the TV to restart. This clears many temporary faults without erasing settings. If the problem returns, identify its scope before changing settings: does it affect every input, one app, only Wi‑Fi, or only a soundbar/HDMI device? That answer points to the failing layer and avoids unnecessary factory resets.

Use the symptom to find the failing layer

Sony TV faults often look similar on screen, but they originate in different places. A frozen streaming app can be an app-service problem even while the TV reports a healthy network. Lip-sync can be introduced by a soundbar rather than the TV panel. An eARC failure can be a cable or HDMI handshake issue, not an internet fault.

What you see Most useful comparison Likely layer First action

The safe first step: Sony’s soft reset

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says most issues can be addressed with basic steps. Hold POWER on the supplied remote for at least five seconds. The TV should restart automatically; allow approximately one minute for it to turn back on. This is different from unplugging the TV and does not normally remove Wi‑Fi credentials, app sign-ins, picture settings, or paired devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to repeat it

Use one soft reset after a sudden freeze, failed app launch, lost network connection, or missing HDMI device. If the same symptom returns immediately, repeated resets are unlikely to identify the cause. Move to the symptom-specific checks below.

What not to do yet

  • Do not factory-reset the TV as a first response; a reset erases settings and sign-ins and should be reserved for model-specific guidance.
  • Do not change several audio, network, and HDMI options at once. Make one reversible change, test, and record the result.
  • Do not assume a visible Wi‑Fi icon proves that a particular streaming service is reachable.

Fix Wi‑Fi drops and intermittent internet

Work from the outside in: establish whether the internet is down, whether the router is reachable, or whether the TV’s own network connection is failing. Network Status/Network Diagnosis on Sony TVs separates those layers.

1. Check the network outside the TV

  1. On a phone or laptop connected to the same Wi‑Fi, open several unrelated websites or services. If those devices also fail, troubleshoot the router or internet provider before changing TV settings.
  2. Look at the router’s indicator lights. Abnormal warning, broadband, or internet lights point to a router or service problem rather than a Sony TV fault.
  3. Check the TV’s date and time. An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and service authentication; automatic time is preferable when the option is available.

2. Run Sony’s network diagnosis

  1. Open Settings → Network & Internet.
  2. Select Network Status, Network Diagnosis, or the equivalent label on your model.
  3. Read the three results. Sony’s diagnostic sequence checks the TV’s network hardware, the TV-to-router connection, and router-to-internet access.

Interpret the pattern rather than treating every failure as the same:

  • TV hardware fails: toggle Wi‑Fi off and on, soft-reset the TV, install available TV software, and test a wired LAN connection if your model has one. Persistent failure across Wi‑Fi and LAN suggests a TV-side issue that needs Sony support.
  • TV-to-router fails: the TV is not maintaining its local link. Reboot the router, move the TV or router to reduce obstruction, forget and reconnect the network, and compare with a temporary wired connection.
  • Router-to-internet fails: the TV can reach the router but the router cannot reach the internet. Check the service on another device and contact the provider if the outage continues.
  • All three pass: the TV has a working network path at that moment. A single app can still be broken, overloaded, or unable to reach its own service.

3. Reconnect after a password or router change

If the Wi‑Fi password, security mode, or router has changed, the TV may retain an invalid saved profile. In the network settings, choose the saved network, select the option to forget or remove it, then select the network again and enter the current password carefully. A soft reset after reconnecting can clear a stale network session.

4. Update the TV software

Open Settings → System → Software Update and install an available update. Keep the TV powered and connected during the update. Menu names vary by model and region, but the update control is normally under System. Software updates can correct compatibility problems that appear as repeated disconnects or failed network authentication.

5. Compare Wi‑Fi with wired LAN

Where the TV provides an Ethernet/LAN socket, connect it directly to the router for a comparison. If wired LAN is stable while Wi‑Fi drops, the internet service is probably not the limiting layer; investigate wireless coverage, interference, router band steering, or the TV’s saved Wi‑Fi profile. If both connections fail in the same way, return to Network Status and the router/service checks.

6. Distinguish a drop from buffering

A service can buffer because of congestion even when the TV remains connected. Sony UK Support lists typical requirements of 5 Mbps for HD video and 25 Mbps for 4K video (figures recorded in 2026). These are typical requirements, not guarantees: household traffic, wireless conditions, service capacity, and peak-time congestion can still cause pauses. Test a second service and, if possible, a wired connection before blaming the TV.

When Wi‑Fi still disconnects

  • Capture the exact Network Status result and whether another device works at the same time.
  • Note whether the problem affects only one room, one router band, or both Wi‑Fi and LAN.
  • Use Sony’s model-specific support instructions before a factory reset; a reset removes saved networks and personal settings and may not fix a router or provider fault.

Fix Sony TV apps that crash, freeze, or stay on a loading screen

An app-only failure requires a different path from a network outage. If Network Status reports a healthy connection and another app plays normally, concentrate on the affected app and its service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Confirm whether the fault is app-specific

  1. Run Settings → Network & Internet → Network Status/Network Diagnosis.
  2. If the checks pass, open a second streaming app or a built-in service.
  3. Use the result to classify the fault: one app points to that app’s data or service; several apps point to TV software, the network, or a wider service outage.

2. Force-stop and reopen the app

Open the TV’s app-management screen, select the affected app, choose Force stop, confirm, and launch it again. The exact route differs by Android TV and Google TV software versions, so use the app’s entry under Settings when the label is present. Force-stopping ends a hung process without deleting your sign-in.

3. Clear cache, then data if necessary

Choose Clear cache for a low-risk cleanup of temporary files. Test the app. If it still freezes, Clear data can rebuild the app’s local state, but it normally signs you out and removes app-specific preferences or downloads. Have the account credentials available before using it.

4. Update or reinstall

Install pending updates for the app and for the TV. If the app remains unusable, uninstall it where the TV permits, restart the TV, and reinstall it from the TV’s app store. A reinstall replaces damaged app files; it does not repair an outage on the app provider’s side.

5. Correct the TV clock

Open Settings → System → Date & Time and enable automatic date and time when available. Incorrect time can invalidate security certificates and create server or sign-in errors that look like a network failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check service-side symptoms

If only one service fails on the TV while its website or mobile app also reports errors, wait for that provider to restore service. If the app fails only on the TV after cache clearing, updating, and reinstalling, record the TV model, software version, app version, and exact error message for the app provider or Sony.

App troubleshooting cautions

  • A Wi‑Fi icon indicates a local connection, not guaranteed access to every content server.
  • Clearing data and reinstalling are reversible but require a fresh sign-in.
  • Do not factory-reset the whole TV to repair one app until Sony’s model-specific guidance recommends it.

Fix audio delay and lip-sync problems

First establish where the delay enters the chain. Play the same content through the TV’s internal speakers, another app, and another input. A delay only through a soundbar, receiver, or one HDMI source usually points to external processing, a source setting, or a cable rather than the TV panel.

1. Reproduce the delay systematically

  1. Soft-reset the TV and the external audio system.
  2. Try a second channel, app, or HDMI input.
  3. Switch temporarily to the TV’s internal speakers.
  4. Note whether voices lead the picture or follow it, and whether the offset is constant or changes by source.

This comparison separates a TV-wide timing issue from a single source or sound system. If every source is delayed through the internal speakers, continue with TV software and model-specific support. If only an external path is delayed, inspect that path first.

2. Check cables and connections

Reseat HDMI, optical, or other audio cables at both ends. Look for loose plugs, damaged insulation, or connectors that do not fit firmly. Replace a suspect cable with a known-good one and retest before changing advanced audio formats.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

3. Reduce external processing

Soundbars and receivers can add processing time for surround virtualization, room correction, or format conversion. Disable or reduce those modes temporarily, then compare lip-sync. If the external system cannot decode the selected format, Sony suggests trying Digital Audio Output = PCM. PCM is a compatibility test; it may change surround capability, so restore the preferred format after identifying the cause.

4. Update both ends

Install available TV software updates and update the soundbar, receiver, or source device according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Firmware mismatches can affect HDMI audio negotiation and timing.

5. Avoid compensating for a source-specific fault globally

A/V sync controls can make one input appear correct while making another worse. Use them only after testing cables, software, and external processing. If the delay varies between broadcasts, apps, or HDMI devices, keep separate source settings where the TV or receiver supports them rather than applying one large correction everywhere.

Fix HDMI, ARC, and eARC detection problems

ARC and eARC work only when the devices, ports, settings, cable, and handshake all agree. The TV must use its specifically labeled HDMI input, and the sound system must use its HDMI output labeled ARC or eARC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Perform a complete power and cable reset

  1. Turn off the TV and the soundbar or receiver.
  2. Disconnect their power cords and unplug the HDMI cable.
  3. Wait two minutes.
  4. Reconnect the TV’s HDMI IN (ARC/eARC) to the audio device’s HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC).
  5. Power on the TV first, then the audio device.

This clears a failed HDMI handshake. Do not connect through a random HDMI input, adapter, switch, or extender while diagnosing ARC/eARC.

2. Enable BRAVIA Sync and Control for HDMI

On the TV, open Settings → External Inputs → BRAVIA Sync Settings → BRAVIA Sync device list → Enable. On the soundbar or receiver, enable its equivalent of Control for HDMI, CEC, or BRAVIA Sync. Labels vary by model. After enabling the controls, return to the BRAVIA Sync device list and check whether the audio system appears.

3. Update both devices

Install current software or firmware on the TV and the audio system. HDMI interoperability fixes can be delivered separately, so updating only one device may leave the handshake problem unchanged.

4. Use the right cable

Test with a short, known-good high-speed HDMI cable. Avoid long runs, adapters, and extenders during diagnosis. Sony specifically recommends a Premium HDMI cable for eARC. A Premium High-Speed HDMI cable for Sony BRAVIA ARC/eARC is the appropriate type to consider when replacing a suspect lead; verify the cable’s certification and the exact port requirements for your model.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

5. Isolate the audio system

If the soundbar or receiver is absent from the BRAVIA Sync list, disconnect other HDMI devices and leave only the TV and audio system connected. Replace the cable and repeat the two-minute power reset. If the device then appears, reconnect other sources one at a time to find a conflicting device, switch, or cable.

6. Check audio format compatibility

If the device is detected but produces silence, try Digital Audio Output = PCM as a compatibility check. A receiver that cannot decode the selected format may remain connected while outputting no sound. Once audio works, consult the receiver’s supported formats and choose the highest mutually supported setting.

ARC versus eARC expectations

  • ARC: uses the TV’s labeled ARC port and supports the audio formats allowed by the connected devices and settings.
  • eARC: requires eARC-capable ports on the relevant devices, compatible software, and a suitable high-speed cable. Sony recommends Premium HDMI for eARC.
  • Neither standard works through an ordinary HDMI input that lacks the ARC/eARC label.

Use reversible tests before a factory reset

Restarting, forgetting and reconnecting Wi‑Fi, clearing an app cache, swapping a cable, and testing another input are reversible. A factory reset is not: it removes saved networks, app sign-ins, picture and sound adjustments, and other personal settings. Use it only when Sony’s instructions for your exact model recommend it after software, cable, and isolation tests have failed. Record important settings and account details first.

A practical decision checklist

  • Only one app fails: test another app, force-stop, clear cache/data, update or reinstall, and set automatic date and time.
  • All apps fail but other devices work: run Network Status, toggle Wi‑Fi, reconnect the saved network, update the TV, and compare wired LAN.
  • Other devices also fail: inspect router lights and contact the internet provider if the router-to-internet check fails.
  • Audio delay is source-specific: test TV speakers, another input, cables, external processing, and PCM output.
  • ARC/eARC is missing: verify labeled ports, enable BRAVIA Sync/Control for HDMI, update both devices, use a known-good Premium-capable cable, and isolate the sound system.
  • Every source has the same fault: soft-reset, update software, document the symptom, and use Sony’s model-specific support route.

Prevent repeat failures

  • Keep TV, soundbar, receiver, and streaming-app software current.
  • Leave the TV’s date and time on automatic settings when supported.
  • Keep a spare known-good high-speed HDMI cable for isolation tests.
  • Label the router’s Wi‑Fi name and current password so a forgotten TV network can be re-added accurately.
  • When a fault appears, write down the input, app, Network Status result, cable arrangement, and whether TV speakers work. That record prevents repeating the same tests and gives support the details needed to identify the failing layer.
