Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If Snipping Tool is not popping up after a screenshot, first identify what is missing: the small notification banner, or the Snipping Tool editor window. Those are separate failures. A missing banner is usually a Windows notification or Do Not Disturb setting; a missing editor window calls for launching, repairing, or resetting Snipping Tool. Use the matching fix below rather than changing every setting at once.
First, identify which part is missing
Press Windows+Shift+S, select an area, and watch what happens. Microsoft documents that the capture is copied to the Snipping Tool window and that a notification appears after a screenshot is finished. If the selection works but no banner is visible, troubleshoot notifications. If the capture completes but no editor window opens, troubleshoot the app itself.
| What you see | Most relevant area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The screen dims and you can select an area, but no banner appears | Windows notifications or Do Not Disturb | Check Settings > System > Notifications, then Notification Center |
| The capture works, but the Snipping Tool editor does not open | Snipping Tool launch or app installation | Open Snipping Tool from Start and capture again |
| Neither the overlay nor the app appears | Shortcut, app, or Windows installation | Search for Snipping Tool in Start and launch it directly |
Restore the missing notification banner
Turn on notifications globally
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure the main notifications switch is on.
- In the app list, select Snipping Tool.
- Enable Snipping Tool notifications and turn on Show notification banners.
- Take another test snip with Windows+Shift+S.
Windows separates notification delivery from banner display. Therefore, notifications can be enabled while banners are disabled, which makes a completed capture appear to do nothing even though the alert was generated.
Check Notification Center
Open Notification Center by selecting the taskbar clock or notification icon, or press Windows+N on Windows 11. If the Snipping Tool alert is there, capture is working and only the banner presentation is being suppressed. Recheck the per-app banner setting rather than reinstalling the app.

Do Not Disturb sends most notifications to Notification Center instead of showing banners. Turn it off temporarily and take another test screenshot. If you must leave it enabled, review its priority-notification settings and allow Snipping Tool through while testing. Restore your preferred notification mode after the test.
Make the Snipping Tool window appear again
Launch the app directly
- Open Start.
- Search for Snipping Tool.
- Open the app from the search result.
- Start a new capture from inside the app and save or copy the result.
Launching it directly distinguishes a notification problem from an app-window problem. If the editor appears when opened from Start, the earlier capture may have completed while the app window was closed or minimized.
Use Repair before Reset
If the window still does not appear, use Windows’ built-in app recovery options:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool.
- Open the app’s menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if the option is available.
- Launch Snipping Tool and test another capture.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, return to the same page and choose Reset, if offered.
- Open the app and test again.
Repair is the less disruptive recovery step. Reset is a stronger reinitialization and should be used only after Repair or when Repair is not provided. Microsoft notes that Advanced options, Repair, and Reset are not available for every app or installation, so a missing button is not itself an error.

Keep capturing while you diagnose the problem
Use the keyboard overlay
Windows+Shift+S opens the snipping overlay. Select a rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen region as available on your Windows version. If the editor window is available, Ctrl+C copies the capture and Ctrl+S saves it.

Open Snipping Tool instead of relying on the banner
If banners are disabled by policy or focus settings, open Snipping Tool from Start before taking the screenshot. This gives you a visible destination for the capture even when Windows does not display a toast notification.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The screenshot is captured, but there is no toast and nothing in Notification Center
- Confirm global notifications are enabled under Settings > System > Notifications.
- Open Snipping Tool’s entry in the app list and enable both notifications and banners.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb temporarily and test again.
- Launch Snipping Tool from Start and capture from inside the app.
These steps test notification delivery and app behavior separately. Microsoft documents the notification controls and Do Not Disturb behavior, but no single setting is guaranteed to be the cause on every PC.
The overlay opens, but the editor never appears
- Open Snipping Tool directly from Start.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Snipping Tool > Advanced options.
- Run Repair, then test.
- Use Reset if Repair is missing or does not help.
Snipping Tool is not listed under Installed apps
Search for the app from Start first. UI labels and available recovery options vary by Windows and app version. If the app is absent from both Start search and Installed apps, the supplied Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal reinstall path; use your organization’s approved Windows app-management process or current Microsoft support instructions for that specific build.

Windows+Shift+S does nothing
Open Snipping Tool from Start and use its capture command. This confirms whether the problem is the shortcut or the app. Keyboard shortcuts and Settings labels can differ between Windows releases, so test the direct app launch before changing system-wide keyboard settings.
Windows version notes
The documented Settings paths apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, with wording that can vary by build. Windows 11 uses Windows+N for Notification Center. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; if you are still using it, expect older interface labels and follow the support status and update policy for that device. The diagnostic distinction—banner versus editor window—still helps on either version.
A repeatable test after each change
- Open Snipping Tool from Start so you know the app is running.
- Press Windows+Shift+S and capture a small region.
- Check whether the editor window appears.
- Check for a banner and then Notification Center with Windows+N.
- Change only one setting or recovery option before testing again.
Recording which of these five results changes prevents you from confusing a repaired app window with a restored notification banner.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is an automated screenshot of a website—not a screenshot of your Windows desktop—ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a repair for the local Snipping Tool, but it avoids browser setup for repeatable web captures. Before the capture, it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL-based caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common screenshot-API parameter names are accepted to ease migration.
