If the problem continues, clear Snapchat’s cache; on Android, also check that Snapchat has camera permission. The steps below help narrow down whether the cause is your connection, Snapchat, or the phone’s camera.
Try these fixes in order
Snapchat recommends checking the connection, restarting the app, updating Snapchat, and restarting the device for camera issues. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes: “lag” can describe several different symptoms, and Snapchat does not identify one cause for every case.

Switch networks
If you are on Wi-Fi, try mobile data; if you are on mobile data, try Wi-Fi. Snapchat notes that connection problems can affect camera operation. If the camera behaves normally on one connection but not the other, the issue may be with that network; contact your internet or mobile provider if needed. See Snapchat’s camera troubleshooting tips.

Close and reopen Snapchat
Fully close the app, then launch it again and test the camera. Simply switching away from Snapchat may leave it running in the background.

Update Snapchat
Check the iOS App Store or Google Play Store for an available Snapchat update and install it. Snapchat recommends using the current version of the app.

Restart your phone
Restart the iPhone or Android phone, reopen Snapchat, and check whether the camera preview and recording respond normally.

Clear Snapchat’s cache
Use the cache-clearing option inside Snapchat’s settings. The exact menu labels and route can vary by platform and app version; follow Snapchat’s cache instructions for the current steps. Snapchat says clearing the cache “won’t delete any of your Memories, Snaps or Chats.”
Check camera permission on Android
If Snapchat’s camera preview is blank, unavailable, or behaving abnormally, make sure the app is allowed to use the camera. Open Android Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Permissions, select Camera, and allow access if it is denied. Menu names and permission choices vary by Android version and device. Use the built-in Camera app to narrow down the problem
Open your phone’s built-in Camera app and try taking a photo or recording a short video. This comparison is a practical diagnostic check, not a guarantee:
- If the built-in camera also has trouble: the issue may involve the phone camera or system, not just Snapchat. Follow the phone maker’s camera troubleshooting guidance.
- If the built-in camera works but Snapchat still lags: continue with Snapchat-specific steps above. If the issue persists, report it to Snapchat using the bug-report flow.
For iPhone camera problems beyond Snapchat
Apple’s guidance is relevant if the iPhone’s own camera malfunctions or image quality is poor: remove a case, film, or accessory that blocks the camera or places a magnet near it; restart the iPhone; update iOS; and test the Camera app again. Apple says persistent camera problems may need service. Its microfiber-cloth advice is for blurry photos, not a fix for Snapchat app lag. See Apple’s iPhone camera troubleshooting guidance.
