If a SmartThings device shows as Offline, has a disconnected or incorrect status, or does not respond, first check whether the problem affects one device or several. For one device, start with its power, battery, range, and setup. If several devices fail, check the hub and network before resetting anything. Samsung Support recommends checking hub power, attempting a reset, or following additional troubleshooting steps; the right fix depends on the device and hub.

First determine whether one device or several are affected

Check the SmartThings app and, where available, the device’s own controls or manufacturer app. A single offline sensor points first to that device’s power, battery, range, or pairing. Several devices connected to the same hub going offline make hub status or network conditions more relevant. If local Wi-Fi device discovery is failing across multiple products, investigate the phone, router, and local network rather than treating each device as an isolated fault.

  • One device: begin with its power or battery and whether it is within range.
  • Several hub-connected devices: inspect the hub’s power and indicator before rebooting it.
  • Wi-Fi or LAN devices: check whether the phone and device share the local network and whether other LAN devices are discoverable.

Check the hub without interrupting an update

Confirm the hub is powered and inspect its indicator. Samsung says a flashing or solid magenta LED indicates an update; SmartThings may show the hub as disconnected during this time. Do not unplug or reboot the hub while that indicator is present. If it remains offline after the update, identify the hub model before following reboot instructions.

Restore power to the affected device

Plugged-in devices

Disconnect the device from power for two minutes, then reconnect it. If appropriate, try another outlet and check the device’s indicator for a warning state.

Battery-powered devices

Check that the battery is seated correctly. Remove it for 30 seconds, reinstall it, and replace it if it is still weak or depleted. Battery type depends on the exact device model, so check that model’s documentation rather than guessing a replacement.

Check setup, range, and interference

Some products must first be set up in their manufacturer’s app before SmartThings can connect to them. Confirm that initial setup is complete, then move the device closer to the hub and reduce obstructions as a test. If it reconnects nearby, range is a likely factor. A powered device may act as a repeater in some networks, so removing or relocating one can affect other devices. Consider a compatible repeater only after establishing that range is the problem.

  • Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
  • Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products

Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance also recommends keeping the hub away from the Wi-Fi router and notes possible Wi-Fi/Zigbee channel overlap. It gives Zigbee channels around 14–25 and Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, or 11 as examples, not a universal radio-planning rule. Router and hub capabilities differ, so check their documentation before changing channels.

For Wi-Fi or LAN devices, check the local network

For LAN discovery, verify that the phone and device are on the same local network. Complete setup in the manufacturer’s app if required. Restart the device, SmartThings app, and phone, then try discovery again. If the device has an Ethernet port, Samsung also suggests testing a direct Ethernet connection.

Check whether other LAN devices work in SmartThings. If several cannot be discovered, investigate the app and router conditions before troubleshooting each product separately. Rebooting a router can temporarily disconnect other devices using it.

If the Wi-Fi network name or password changed, Samsung notes that the hub and connected devices may need updated network details. The process varies by device; some products may require resetting and reconnecting.

Update or re-add only the affected device

Check SmartThings and the device’s native app for available software updates. If power, range, setup, and network checks do not resolve the problem, remove and add the individual device again using its model-specific instructions. Hub-connected devices may need to be reset or excluded from the hub and placed in pairing mode. A Bluetooth device may also need to be unpaired from the phone’s Bluetooth settings before pairing again.

For a third-party product, first see whether it works in its manufacturer’s app. If it does, Samsung advises that some linked services can be removed from SmartThings and re-added. Other products need device-specific power, range, reset, or re-add steps. Contact the manufacturer if the issue also occurs in its app.

Reboot the hub only when the problem points to the hub

A hub reboot turns it off and on to refresh it without removing connected devices or settings. Samsung Canada’s instructions vary by SmartThings Hub v1, v2, and v3, and by SmartThings Wi-Fi product. Identify your model and follow the current instructions for it rather than applying a generic button sequence.

Reserve factory reset for persistent hub-wide failures

A factory reset restores defaults and can remove data and device connections, unlike a reboot. The procedure depends on the hub model. On some firmware versions, setup again may require clearing devices, automations, scenes, and locations first. Treat it as a last resort after simpler checks and a model-specific reboot, and consult current Samsung instructions before proceeding.
