If a PS5 download is slow or an update is stuck, first check PlayStation Network status, then determine whether the item is actually stalled, your connection is unstable, or the console lacks storage. Work through the low-risk checks below before deleting a download or using Safe Mode; no setting guarantees a faster download.
1. Check PlayStation Network status
Before changing console or router settings, check PlayStation Network service status for an alert affecting the PlayStation Store or other services. If PlayStation reports an outage or maintenance, wait for service to return and try again; local network changes are unlikely to fix a service-side interruption.
2. See whether the download is stalled or simply slow
Pause and resume the queue item
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 Control Center.
- Select the affected download and choose Pause, then Resume.
- If it still will not start, select Cancel and Delete, then download it again from your Game Library.
PlayStation gives this cancel-and-retry step for a download that will not start. It is not a routine fix for every download that is progressing slowly; avoid deleting a continuing download unless there is another reason to reset it.
Test the PS5 connection
On the console, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. A failed test or an error code can help distinguish a connectivity issue from a queue problem. If an error appears, use the current PlayStation support page for that exact code rather than assuming the progress indicator alone identifies the cause.

3. Check the home network
PlayStation recommends trying a wired connection when addressing a PS5 network connection error. If Ethernet is practical, connect the console to the router and test again. A suitable Ethernet cable is all that is needed to make a wired connection; PlayStation does not require a particular cable category or promise a specific speed gain.

Restart the PS5 as part of troubleshooting. If the console reports a server-connection error, PlayStation also advises turning off the modem and router, waiting at least five minutes, then restarting them, and checking for router firmware updates with the router manufacturer.

To isolate a possible home-network issue, check whether other devices can use Wi-Fi and whether they are downloading heavily. You can pause other devices’ downloads, disconnect devices temporarily, or try 5 GHz Wi-Fi if your router and console support it. These are general isolation steps, not a guaranteed PS5 download-speed fix. PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation on its Remote Play support page apply to Remote Play, not to PS5 game downloads.
4. Check free storage and software
Confirm there is enough room
In the Game Library, open the game’s product details and check its minimum free-space requirement. Compare that with the available space shown under Settings > Storage. If space is insufficient, free up storage before retrying the update or download.

Restart and update the console
For an update that will not install, PlayStation’s troubleshooting sequence includes testing the connection, restarting the PS5, and installing the current PS5 system software. If the issue continues after those checks, PlayStation lists deleting and reinstalling the game as a further option; this is more disruptive than pausing and resuming a queue item.
5. Use Safe Mode only after basic checks
If a download or update still fails after checking PSN status, the queue, connection, storage, restart, and system software, PlayStation lists Safe Mode > Clear Cache and Rebuild Database for persistent problems. Follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode instructions for entering the menu and selecting the relevant option. If the problem remains, contact PlayStation Support with the displayed error code, the steps that reproduce the problem, and when it occurred. Screenshots or video may also help explain the issue.

6. Let eligible downloads run in Rest Mode
Rest Mode can let eligible game and app updates download while you are away; it does not make them download faster. To enable the required settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and enable Auto-Download or Auto-Install.
You can enable Auto-Download without Auto-Install if you want updates downloaded but prefer to defer installation until you return to the console.

7. Use the displayed error code to identify the failure
Different PS5 errors can point to different problems: PlayStation’s error-code index describes NP-102947-3 as an internet connection that is too slow or unstable to perform an update, while other codes cover service maintenance, server communication, storage, or update installation. Look up the code shown on your console in PlayStation’s PS5 error-code index and follow the matching guidance. A stuck-looking progress display by itself does not establish that your home internet is slow.
