A fast internet plan does not guarantee fast console downloads. The quickest way to find the bottleneck is a controlled comparison: run the console’s network test, stop other downloads and streaming, then download one game over Ethernet if you can. If Ethernet is clearly faster, fix the Wi‑Fi path. If it is not, investigate router congestion, platform service status, the ISP connection, or the game server rather than changing random console settings.
This guide gives exact PS5 settings, an Xbox-safe troubleshooting sequence, and a decision tree for determining whether the slowdown follows your console or your home network.
Start with a controlled download test
Testing before changing settings prevents you from blaming the wrong component. A game download can be limited by the console’s Wi‑Fi reception, your router, another device using bandwidth, a platform service, an ISP problem, or the publisher’s delivery server. A single speed-test result on a phone does not identify which one is responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Stop competing traffic. Pause downloads and updates on other consoles, computers and phones. Stop 4K streaming, cloud backups, video calls and large uploads for the duration of the test.
- Run the console’s built-in network test. Record the reported connection result rather than relying on a speed-test app on another device. The result is a snapshot, not a guaranteed game-download rate.
- Use one download only. Pause the game download, wait a few seconds, and resume it once. Do not queue several titles while diagnosing the connection.
- Repeat while the console is idle. Close a running game or streaming app if the console allows it. Suspended software can continue using network or storage resources.
- Compare Ethernet with Wi‑Fi. Connect the console directly to the router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable, repeat the same test, and compare the download behavior. Keep the game and test conditions as similar as possible.
Do not treat a brief speed spike or a single slow minute as proof of a fault. Watch the download for long enough to see whether the rate is consistently poor, repeatedly drops to zero, or varies when another device starts using the network.

What the Ethernet comparison tells you
Ethernet is faster than Wi‑Fi
The bottleneck is probably between the console and the router. Wireless interference, distance, walls, a crowded radio channel, or a weak band connection can reduce throughput even when your broadband service is fast. Move the console closer to the router, remove large obstructions, and test again. Sony’s connectivity guidance specifically recommends a wired connection when possible and moving a wirelessly connected PS5 closer to the router when connection problems occur.
If moving the console is impractical, try the router’s less-congested wireless band and improve coverage with a better-positioned router or a mesh system. A dual-band router can help when one band is crowded, but it cannot overcome severe distance, interference or a poor broadband line.
Ethernet is no faster
The console-to-router Wi‑Fi link is unlikely to be the main cause. Compare the console’s result with another device connected to the same router, reboot the router and console, and check whether the relevant platform is reporting an outage. If another device is also slow, contact your ISP after collecting the test results. If only the console remains slow over Ethernet, use the platform’s own troubleshooting flow and escalate to platform support if the problem persists.

The rate changes whenever another device is active
Your home connection or router may be congested. Pause cloud sync, large uploads and video streams, then retest. Upload saturation is especially disruptive because it can increase latency and leave less capacity for the download. Schedule large transfers for another time rather than repeatedly changing console settings.

Fixing slow downloads on PS5
Set up and test a wired connection
On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Choose the wired connection option and complete the on-screen setup. Use a direct cable to the router for the comparison; a faulty intermediate switch or power-line adapter can create a second variable.
Sony’s error guidance states: “If possible, connect to the Internet using a wired connection.” A wired test is valuable even if you plan to return to Wi‑Fi because it separates wireless conditions from platform, ISP and server causes. If the download improves substantially, leave the cable connected for large games or address the wireless placement and band selection described above.
Improve PS5 Wi‑Fi when Ethernet is impractical
- Place the PS5 closer to the router and remove cabinets, metal objects and other obstructions between them.
- Try the router’s other wireless band if the current one is congested or has weak range.
- Keep the console away from sources of radio interference and avoid hiding it in an enclosed media cabinet.
- Pause other household traffic while downloading a large title.
- Retest after each change so you know which change helped.
There is no universal PS5 download speed target or guaranteed percentage improvement. Results depend on the ISP service, wireless conditions, platform and game-server load, and the size of the title.
Allow downloads in Rest Mode
Rest Mode can download while you are away, but only when the internet connection remains active. On PS5, enable Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet.

Automatic downloads and automatic installation are separate controls. To configure them, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, then turn on Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode, as appropriate for your preference. Sony notes that Auto-Download can be used when you want to keep a suspended game. If “Stay Connected to the Internet” is off, the automatic-update option cannot keep downloading while the console is in Rest Mode.
Rest Mode does not make a server deliver data faster. It simply lets an eligible download continue while the console is idle, avoiding the time you would otherwise spend waiting in front of the screen.
When a PS5 download stalls or repeatedly fails
First pause and resume once, then retry with other traffic stopped. Reboot the PS5 and router and check PlayStation service status before making more invasive changes. If several downloads or installs repeatedly stall, cached or temporary data may be contributing to connectivity or loading failures. Use Sony’s or the game publisher’s documented cache-clearing procedure for your model and software version. Do not delete saved data casually: cache-clearing instructions and saved-data deletion are not interchangeable.

Perform the same wired-versus-wireless comparison
- Pause other downloads, updates and streaming on the Xbox and on other devices.
- Run the Xbox network test while connected over Wi‑Fi.
- Connect the Xbox directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test under the same conditions.
- Download one title and observe whether the rate is steadier or materially higher over the cable.
A faster wired result points to wireless placement, interference, band congestion or coverage. A similar result on both connections points toward router congestion, the ISP, Xbox service conditions or the game’s delivery server. Use the Xbox slow-download and connection-speed troubleshooting pages for the next platform-specific checks, then escalate if measured connectivity and a wired test do not explain the slowdown.
Improve Xbox Wi‑Fi
Move the console closer to the router, remove obstructions, try the less-congested band, and pause competing traffic. If coverage is poor throughout the room or house, reposition the router or use a better router or mesh system. Test after every adjustment; changing several variables at once makes it impossible to identify the cause.
When an Xbox download stalls
Pause and resume once, close any running game, and restart the console and router. Check Xbox service status before assuming the console is defective. If repeated stalls affect multiple titles, use the documented platform or publisher cache-clearing process. Avoid deleting local or cloud saves unless the support instructions explicitly require it and you have confirmed that your progress is synchronized.

| Symptom | Most useful next step | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| One download is slow, while other titles and devices are normal | Pause/resume once, stop competing transfers, close the running game, and retry with the console idle. | A temporary transfer or server condition may have cleared. If only that title remains slow, the game’s delivery service may be the limiting factor. |
| Wi‑Fi is slow but Ethernet is normal | Move the console, remove obstructions, try the other wireless band, or improve coverage. | The bottleneck follows the wireless path, not the broadband service alone. |
| Wi‑Fi and Ethernet are both slow on the console | Compare another device, reboot router and console, check platform status, then contact the ISP or platform support if it persists. | The problem may be router or ISP congestion, a platform outage, or a console/platform-specific issue. |
| Several devices are slow at the same time | Stop heavy household traffic, reboot the router, and compare results again. | The home network or ISP is more likely than a single console. |
| Downloads repeatedly stall or fail to install | Check service status and use the documented cache-clearing procedure for the platform or publisher. | Temporary data or a service condition may be involved; do not delete saved data without explicit instructions. |
Platform and home-network checks that are easy to miss
Check service status before changing settings
Platform maintenance or an outage can mimic a bad console connection. Check the current PlayStation or Xbox service-status page when downloads slow across multiple titles or when the network test looks normal. A status problem is outside your home network; changing DNS, resetting the console or buying hardware will not fix it.

Reboot in a useful order
- Pause the game download.
- Turn off or restart the console using its normal power controls.
- Restart the router and wait until its internet connection is fully restored.
- Run the console network test again.
- Resume one download and observe it before reconnecting other devices.
This sequence clears transient router and console states without erasing games, saves or account data.
Compare the console with another device
Use a device connected to the same router and, ideally, the same wireless band. If both are slow, gather timestamps, test results and whether Ethernet changed the result before contacting the ISP. If only the console is slow, provide those same details to platform support. Mention whether the issue affects one title or every title; that distinction helps support separate a game-server problem from a network problem.
What not to expect from common “speed fixes”
- No guaranteed percentage gain: Neither PS5 nor Xbox has a universal download-speed improvement that applies to every ISP, router and game.
- Rest Mode is not a speed boost: On PS5 it permits downloads while idle only when “Stay Connected to the Internet” is enabled.
- Ethernet is a diagnostic as well as a connection: It can remove Wi‑Fi interference, but it cannot fix an ISP outage, platform maintenance or a busy game server.
- A faster broadband plan may not change one title: Once your available bandwidth exceeds what the current server or platform path can provide, more advertised speed has no effect on that transfer.
- Do not delete saves to clear a cache: Follow the platform or publisher’s documented process and verify synchronization before any data-removal step.
PS5 versus Xbox: which troubleshooting path is clearer?
| Comparison point | PS5 | Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in diagnostic depth | Network settings provide a connection test and a clearly documented wired setup path. | Network settings provide connection tests; current menu wording should be confirmed in Xbox’s support guidance. |
| Wired-versus-wireless testability | Use Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, then compare one download. | Run the Network settings test over Wi‑Fi and Ethernet under the same conditions. |
| Idle-download behavior | Rest Mode downloads require Stay Connected to the Internet; Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode are separate controls. | Use the console’s current power and download settings, then follow Xbox’s support instructions; this guide does not assume undocumented labels. |
| Platform-status visibility | Check PlayStation service status when multiple downloads are affected. | Check Xbox service status when multiple downloads are affected. |
| Identifying the bottleneck | A wired comparison and Sony’s documented placement guidance make Wi‑Fi isolation straightforward. | The dedicated slow-download and connection-speed troubleshooting flows provide the next steps after the wired comparison. |
A concise checklist to keep beside the console
- Pause other downloads, updates, streams and backups.
- Run the PS5 or Xbox network test and note the result.
- Pause and resume the affected download once.
- Close a running game and retry with the console idle.
- Connect Ethernet directly to the router and compare.
- If Ethernet is faster, improve placement, band selection or coverage.
- If Ethernet is not faster, compare another device, reboot router and console, and check platform status.
- If multiple titles repeatedly stall, follow the documented cache-clearing process without deleting saves casually.
- Contact the ISP or platform support with test results, timestamps, affected titles and the wired-versus-wireless outcome.
The decisive evidence is not the speed advertised by your internet plan; it is what changes when you remove Wi‑Fi, household traffic and temporary console conditions one at a time. That comparison tells you whether to adjust placement, wait for a service issue, call the ISP, or seek platform support.
