If Slay the Spire 2 crashes, will not launch, opens to a black screen, or has sound or controller problems on Steam Deck, start with updates, a full shutdown, and file verification. The cause depends on the game and Deck configuration: Steam lists SteamOS + Linux support, but that does not mean every issue has the same fix. Try Proton only as a controlled comparison, not as a guaranteed remedy.

Start with the low-risk checks

Work through these steps in order, retrying the game after each one. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.

  1. Update the game and SteamOS. Install any available updates for Slay the Spire 2 and the Deck’s system software.
  2. Fully shut down the Deck. Open the Power menu, choose Shut Down, wait for the device to turn off, then turn it back on and launch the game again. A full shutdown is different from simply putting the Deck to sleep.
  3. Temporarily undo recent changes. If the problem started after a BIOS change, performance tweak, plugin, or third-party utility, restore the previous defaults or disable the change for a test. Restore changes selectively afterward.
  4. Verify the game files. In Steam, open the game’s Properties > Installed Files and choose the option to verify the integrity of the installed files. Let the check finish, then retry the game.

These steps follow a checklist reproduced by a Steam Community user who said it came from Steam Support; the reviewed Steam Support game page does not itself publish a game-specific Deck crash remedy. Steam Community discussion · Steam Support: Slay the Spire 2

Check whether storage or recent system changes are involved

Test internal storage if the game is on a microSD card

If the installation is on a microSD card or another external drive, move it to the Deck’s internal SSD and test again. This is a diagnostic comparison suggested in the reproduced support checklist, not evidence that external storage is generally incompatible and not a reason to buy an SSD. If moving the install changes nothing, return to the other checks rather than treating storage as the cause.

Compare stock settings with your current setup

When the failure began after BIOS or performance changes, plugins, or third-party utilities, test with those changes temporarily reversed. If the game works, re-enable changes one at a time to identify what affects it. If other games also become unstable, that points to a broader Deck configuration issue rather than a problem isolated to this game; it still does not identify a specific cause by itself.

Should you force Proton?

Steam lists Slay the Spire 2 as supporting SteamOS + Linux, so forcing Proton is a comparison to try only if the default setup continues to fail. A user-reproduced support checklist suggests trying a recent Proton release, then the previous release if needed. The exact available labels may change as Steam updates its compatibility tools.

  1. In Steam, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility.
  2. Enable the option to force a compatibility tool, then select a recent Proton release from the list.
  3. Launch the game and note whether the symptom changes. If it still fails, try the previous release as a separate test.
  4. If the change makes the problem worse or has no useful effect, disable forced compatibility and return to the default setting.

Change only the compatibility setting between tests. Proton is not a universal fix: a ValveSoftware/Proton report describes loading or main-menu crashes on a specific Intel Broadwell system running Fedora and Mesa, and reports that Proton Experimental, Proton 9.0-1, and Proton 6.3 did not resolve that case. That report is not a Steam Deck diagnosis, but it is a reason not to assume that switching Proton will solve every Linux launch failure. ValveSoftware/Proton issue report

Match the problem to what is known

Mega Crit’s June 19, 2026 v0.107.1 notes document fixes for several specific issues. A fix in those notes does not establish the cause of a similar symptom on a particular Deck, or show that every crash of that type is resolved.

Symptom or condition What the dated notes establish What to do
Crash during Linux combat The v0.107.1 notes say a Linux combat crash involving UI elements removed mid-frame was fixed. Update the game, then record when and where any remaining crash occurs. Do not assume another combat crash has the same cause.
Linux crash when ICU libraries are unavailable The notes list a fix for this named condition. Update and retest. The available evidence does not support telling Deck players to install libraries manually.
Launch failure or black screen The notes mention fixing a feedback screen stuck on launch, but do not establish a universal fix for current black-screen or startup failures. Try the basic checks and, if needed, a controlled compatibility comparison. Record whether the game shows a logo, reaches a menu, or stays black.
Controller or input trouble The notes list fixes including stopping rapid switching between detected input types and several controller-navigation issues. Update and retest. A controller bug does not by itself explain a crash.
Sound problem The notes also mention Linux audio behavior; they do not establish that every missing-audio report has the same cause. Note whether sound is missing only in this game and whether the problem began after an update or configuration change.

The notes are reproduced in the SteamDB record for v0.107.1. Steam describes the game as an Early Access release from Mega Crit, released March 5, 2026, and says further bug fixes and broader hardware compatibility are planned. Slay the Spire 2 on Steam

Work out whether the failure is game-specific

Try another game marked Verified on your Deck. If it has similar crashes or instability, focus your report on the wider system behavior and recent Deck changes. If other games work normally while Slay the Spire 2 fails, document the issue as specific to this game so support can distinguish it from broader instability.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Also compare Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode if you can reproduce the problem in both. Neither comparison proves a cause, but it helps describe whether the failure follows the game across modes or appears only in one environment.

Collect useful details before reporting a persistent issue

  • The exact symptom: crash on launch, loading crash, black screen, crash during a particular action, missing sound, or controller problem.
  • When it began and whether it happens every time or intermittently.
  • Whether it occurs in Gaming Mode, Desktop Mode, or both.
  • Your Deck and SteamOS versions, the game version, and whether the install is on internal storage or microSD.
  • Any forced compatibility setting and recent BIOS, performance, plugin, or utility changes.
  • Whether other Verified games show a similar problem, and which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior.

Steam’s game support page links to community discussions and guides. Mega Crit says its Early Access development uses player feedback and includes an in-game feedback tool; the developer’s page states, “Slay the Spire requires a lot of player feedback so we can balance content, add quality of life features, and make sure the game runs without issues.” Use the in-game feedback option when available, or the Steam community and support routes to describe a reproducible problem.
