If Slack loads normally but one app does not, check that app’s authorization and installation status; for custom integrations, inspect event delivery and API responses. These checks separate a client or network problem from an app problem and point you toward the right fix.
First, determine whether Slack or one integration is failing
Check Slack in the desktop app and in a browser, and note whether other apps and workspace features work. If Slack itself will not connect or load, troubleshoot the client, network, or Slack service before changing an integration. If Slack works normally and only one integration is affected, start with that app’s authorization and status.
- Slack will not connect across the workspace: check network access and Slack’s service status.
- Slack loads, but one integration fails: check the app’s permissions, installation, and authorization.
- A custom app receives Slack events inconsistently: inspect its request URL, endpoint logs, and response time.
- API calls return HTTP 429: follow the Retry-After instruction rather than retrying immediately.
Fix Slack connection or loading problems
Slack’s desktop and browser clients use a persistent WebSocket connection over port 443. A proxy or firewall can interrupt that connection, making Slack appear broken even when an integration is configured correctly. Slack’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends checking network settings and security devices; ask your network administrator to review the route if you cannot change those settings yourself.
- Reload Slack. If Slack reports a server error, check Slack Status before treating the issue as an app configuration failure.
- In the desktop app, clear the cache and restart Slack. In a browser, clear the cache and try Slack in a private or incognito window.
- If Slack works in the private window, check whether browser extensions are interfering.
- If Slack still cannot connect, review any proxy, firewall, antivirus, or VPN settings with your network administrator and run Slack’s connection test.
Check the app’s permissions and installation state
Slack app scopes determine what workspace information an app can access and which actions it can take. If an integration is installed but no longer performs a task, review its granted permissions and authorization against what it needs to do. Slack explains scopes in its API scope documentation.

- Open the workspace’s app management or approval settings and confirm the integration is still installed and active. Workspace owners or app managers may control these settings; ask one to review the app if you cannot manage it.
- Review the app’s granted permissions and authorization. If the integration’s required access is missing or has changed, a workspace owner or app manager may need to approve or restore it.
- Check whether the member who installed or authorized the app was deactivated. Slack says deactivation revokes that member’s API tokens and can deactivate apps that require that member’s permissions. A workspace manager with the necessary access may need to reactivate and configure the app.

For custom apps, diagnose Events API delivery
If a custom app uses Slack’s Events API, begin with the request URL configured in the app. Slack requires the URL to be confirmed before it can be saved, and the URL is case-sensitive. Verify it in the app settings using Slack’s Events API documentation.

- Check endpoint logs to determine whether Slack’s requests arrive. If none arrive, recheck the configured URL, its verification status, and the service’s availability.
- For requests that arrive, inspect the HTTP response and how long the endpoint takes to send it. Slack expects an HTTP 2xx response within three seconds. Failed deliveries are retried three times with exponential backoff.
- Return the acknowledgement promptly, then move longer-running work to a queue or other asynchronous processing. This prevents slow downstream tasks from delaying the response to Slack.
- If event subscriptions have been disabled after delivery failures, re-enable them in the app settings and check Slack’s Events API FAQ.
- Check event volume and downstream capacity. Slack documents a maximum of 30,000 event deliveries per workspace per app per 60 minutes. When that limit is exceeded, Slack sends an
app_rate_limitedevent describing the affected workspace and time.
Respond correctly to HTTP 429 rate limits
If an HTTP API call returns 429, read its Retry-After header and wait the stated number of seconds before retrying that method for that workspace. Slack applies limits in the context of the method, app, and workspace, and details can vary by feature. Use Slack’s rate-limit documentation to check the relevant method rather than assuming one limit applies to every call.
For Events API delivery-limit signals, investigate event volume, subscriptions, and the capacity of the service handling events. Repeated immediate retries do not address a rate limit and can add unnecessary load.

When the integration still fails
If Slack is connecting normally, the app remains authorized, and a custom endpoint is acknowledging events on time, the fault may be specific to the third-party service or its account. Check that provider’s service status, account settings, and logs, and compare any recent changes to its API or configuration. The appropriate next step depends on which integration is affected.
