If Siri misunderstands you or does not answer, first identify what is failing: wake-word activation, speech recognition, spoken replies, or the request itself. Check that the device is online, then follow the matching steps below. Apple’s guide, “If Siri isn’t working on your iPhone or iPad”, recommends checking Siri settings, updating software, and restarting when appropriate.
If Siri does not wake or start listening
First check the connection: Siri requests require internet access, and Apple says Siri will usually report a connection problem when the device is offline. Confirm Wi-Fi or cellular data is working by opening a webpage or another online service.

- Check Siri is enabled. Open Settings and tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri; the label varies by iOS release. Confirm listening for “Siri” or “Hey Siri” is enabled.
- Retrain voice activation. Turn listening off and back on, then complete the on-screen voice setup prompts.
- Test without the wake phrase. Press and hold the side button on iPhone or the top button on iPad. On older models with a Home button, press and hold Home. If Siri responds this way, the issue is more likely wake-word activation than Siri being entirely unavailable.
- Try typing instead. Type to Siri can help you make a request when voice activation is not working or speaking is inconvenient.
Apple’s iPhone Siri guide says an internet connection is required to use Siri.
If Siri hears you but misunderstands
Try the request again with different wording. For an unfamiliar name or unclear word, spell it out. If Siri displays the recognized request on screen, tap the text and edit it before continuing. If you are composing a message that has not been sent, you can say “Change it” to revise it.

For a request that keeps being misheard, use Type to Siri rather than repeating the same phrase. If recognition problems are limited to Siri while calls and recordings sound clear, focus on request wording, Siri’s language, and its listening setup rather than assuming the microphone is faulty.
If Siri responds but does not speak
Open Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Siri Responses, then select Prefer Spoken Responses if you want spoken answers, including when Silent mode is on.

On iPhone, button-activated Siri responds silently in Silent mode by default, while voice-activated Siri responds aloud. The response preference lets you change that behavior.
If Siri cannot complete a request
Some failures are not speech-recognition problems. A request can depend on internet access, supported features, device settings, or availability in your language and country or region. Apple notes that “Siri availability, features, and commands vary by language, and country and region” in its Siri troubleshooting guidance.

Check Siri’s language
Go to Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Language and confirm the selected language matches the one you are using. A language or locale mismatch can affect how requests are understood and which commands are available; not every feature or wake phrase works in every locale.
Check connection, VPN, and software
- Verify the device has an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection and retry the request.
- If Siri settings are missing, restart the device and check VPN settings. Apple cautions that some VPN profiles might not allow Siri; this is a check for missing Siri settings, not evidence that VPN is a routine cause of failed requests.
- Install available iOS or iPadOS updates. Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance recommends updating software.
When to investigate the microphone
Look beyond Siri settings when audio is unclear in calls or recordings too. Apple’s microphone checks are iPhone-specific; exact instructions may differ by iPad model.

- Remove a case, screen protector, or film that may cover an opening, and clear debris from the iPhone openings.
- Record a short clip in Voice Memos and play it back to check whether the sound is clear.
- If the problem involves speakerphone audio, record video with the Camera app and compare playback.
- If audio remains unclear across calls, recordings, or apps after these checks, contact Apple or an authorized service provider to ask about service.
When only Siri misunderstands and other audio is clear, a broader microphone problem is less strongly indicated; continue with Siri’s language, activation, and request phrasing first.
