Most Shroud of the Avatar failures become easier to isolate when you first separate the Steam and standalone clients, then test whether the patch server is reachable. The standalone client uses BitTorrent for patches, so a firewall, antivirus, router, ISP filter, or parental-control service can stop an update even while normal websites work. Steam has a different installation, account, and repair path.
Follow the workflow below in order. It distinguishes a launcher that cannot start, a patch frozen at 0%, a rejected login, a crash after loading, and a connection failure during play without treating an old forum workaround as a guaranteed cure.
Start by identifying how you installed the game
Do not diagnose a Steam installation with the standalone executable, or use standalone launcher advice for a Steam copy. Write down which path you are testing:

Close both clients before switching tests. If you have shortcuts for more than one executable, remove the ambiguity temporarily: launch from the Steam Library for Steam, or from the current standalone patcher for a standalone account.

Fix a standalone launcher that will not start
Install the current patcher
A September 30, 2026 official update says the old patcher is being redirected to the Chaos patcher and provides separate Windows, Mac, and Linux downloads. If an old desktop shortcut opens nothing, points to a missing file, or loops while checking for updates, obtain the current platform download from that announcement rather than continuing to troubleshoot the obsolete executable.
The same update reports: “If the new patcher gives you trouble, try running it as administrator; that fixed it for one new player.” Treat this as a reported workaround, not a universal fix. On Windows, right-click the new launcher, choose Run as administrator, and test once. If it works only with elevation, check whether the installation directory or security software is preventing the normal user account from writing patch files; do not leave broad administrator use as your only diagnosis.
Check local security controls
- Exit the launcher and any game process.
- Open your antivirus and firewall history and look for a blocked or quarantined launcher, updater, or game executable.
- Restore a file only if you have confirmed it came from the official installer, then add a narrow allow rule for that executable and its installation folder.
- Temporarily disable one security layer at a time, launch, and immediately re-enable it after the test. A successful test identifies the blocking layer; it does not justify leaving protection disabled.
- Retry the launcher without mixing in a Steam shortcut.
Sandboxing, controlled-folder protection, DNS filtering, and parental-control products can also prevent a patcher from creating files or contacting its service. Record which setting changed and reverse it after the test.
When the patch is stuck at 0% or never finds files
Use the patch-server reachability test
The developer explains that the standalone client distributes game patches through the BitTorrent internet protocol. In the official troubleshooting discussion, Ravalox wrote: “If you cannot display this list of files, then something is blocking you from reaching our server.” Open the non-Steam torrent seed-list directory identified by the official support material in a normal browser while the launcher is closed.

- The directory loads: basic access to the patch server works. Investigate the launcher installation, permissions, corrupted local metadata, or a security rule that blocks the updater specifically.
- The directory does not load: the failure is more likely upstream of your password. Check the router, local firewall, antivirus web protection, DNS or content filter, ISP policy, and any work or school network. A blocked directory points to a reachability problem rather than incorrect login credentials.
This test is valuable because ordinary HTTPS browsing can succeed while BitTorrent traffic is filtered. A patch frozen at 0% therefore does not prove that the account is locked or that the game files are corrupt.
Work from the least invasive fix to the most specific
- Restart the computer, modem, and router. Wait for the router to reconnect before starting the launcher.
- Try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, only long enough to compare behavior. If the patch works there, your home router, ISP, or filtering policy is implicated.
- Allow the trusted launcher and game through the operating-system firewall and antivirus. Prefer an application rule over opening every inbound port.
- Check router security, DNS filtering, and parental-control logs for blocked torrent or game traffic.
- If the seed-list directory remains unreachable on multiple devices and networks, contact the ISP or network administrator. If it loads but the patch remains at 0%, return to local permissions, disk space, and launcher files.
Check storage and write access
Confirm that the target drive has room for both downloaded and temporary patch data. Verify that the account running the launcher can write to the installation directory. A read-only folder, a full drive, or a partially quarantined file can look like a network stall. Avoid deleting the entire installation until you have preserved the exact error and confirmed that a clean current installer is available.
Published ports and what they do (without unnecessary port forwarding)
The Shroud of the Avatar FAQ lists three launcher ports and six game-service ports. These are published requirements, not a promise that every home network needs manual forwarding.

On a typical home connection, an application allow rule permits required outbound traffic without port forwarding. Port forwarding changes the router’s inbound behavior and can create unnecessary exposure. If you are on a managed, campus, corporate, or carrier-grade-NAT network, you may not control the relevant filter; give the administrator the exact protocol and port list instead.

Fix Steam launch, update, or login problems
Use the Steam desktop workflow
- Start the Steam desktop client, not a standalone Shroud shortcut.
- Open Library, select Shroud of the Avatar, and choose Play or install it there if it is not present.
- Let Steam finish its own download and update before diagnosing the game.
- If Steam crashes, silently closes, or fails to update, use Steam’s client troubleshooting for that failure rather than applying standalone patcher changes.
Steam’s published guidance includes refreshing the modem or router and updating the operating system and hardware drivers. Restart Steam after each change so you can tell which step affected the result.
Verify files when the Steam installation starts but behaves incorrectly
In the game’s Steam properties, use Steam’s installed-file verification command, then allow the process to complete before launching again. Verification can replace missing or damaged files; it cannot repair a blocked network, an incompatible driver, or an account-authentication problem. If Steam reports a download-region or client error, resolve that in Steam first and only then test the game.
Separate account and client questions
A successful Steam update does not prove that the game service can be reached, and a standalone account’s credentials do not automatically explain a Steam client failure. Record whether the login screen appears, whether credentials are rejected, whether authentication succeeds but the character list fails, and whether Offline Mode works. Those stages identify different causes.

When login fails
Determine whether it is authentication or connectivity
- Login form never appears: treat it as a launcher, Steam, or patch-service problem.
- Form appears but credentials are rejected: check account details and service status; do not change firewall ports as a first response.
- Credentials are accepted but the game cannot enter the world: investigate game-service connectivity, router or ISP filtering, and temporary service interruption.
- Offline Mode works but online play does not: your local rendering and much of the installation are functioning; concentrate on the online path.
Do not repeatedly reset a password when the patch-server directory itself is unreachable. A blocked patch service is evidence of a network path problem, not of a bad password.

Check for a service-side event before changing your computer
The September 2026 server-migration notice estimated six to eight hours of targeted downtime. That window is historical, not a current outage prediction. If an official notice lists maintenance, wait for the stated window to end before making invasive changes. Port lists and patcher endpoints can change after migrations, so use the latest FAQ and official announcement when a current notice conflicts with older instructions.
Fix crashes during startup or after loading
Capture the exact crash stage
Before changing settings, write down the platform, CPU, GPU, graphics-driver version, RAM, the exact point of failure, and whether the crash occurs before login, while loading a scene, or after entering the world. Note whether Offline Mode starts. This evidence prevents unrelated network and rendering fixes from being mixed together.
Apply reversible graphics and client checks
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s supported release and restart the computer.
- Disable overlays temporarily, including chat, recording, performance-monitoring, and GPU overlays. Retest with one change at a time.
- Turn off sandboxing or controlled-folder restrictions only for a short, controlled test, then restore protection.
- For Steam, verify installed files after the driver and overlay test.
- Lower or reset graphics settings if the crash happens during rendering or scene loading, then test the same location again.
A forum crash report discusses driver and rendering changes, but those suggestions are anecdotal. They are useful experiments, not universal fixes or proof that every crash is a GPU defect.
Mac-only diagnostic: -force-glcore
A 2019 community thread suggests entering -force-glcore in the launcher’s Launch Arguments field. This is old guidance, not a current official guarantee. Use it only as a reversible diagnostic: add the argument, test once, and remove it if there is no improvement or if another problem appears. Do not combine it with several other rendering changes, because you will lose the ability to identify the cause.

Interpret the publisher’s performance statement correctly
The September 2026 migration update says the game reaches 60 FPS in most places on a modern video card and CPU. That is the publisher’s performance statement, not an independent benchmark and not a guarantee for every resolution, driver, scene, or computer. A crash, freeze, or severe stutter should therefore be diagnosed from your hardware and reproducible stage rather than assumed to be normal performance.

Compare online and Offline Mode
Offline Mode removes the live-service connection from the test. If it runs reliably while online play times out, focus on the router, firewall, ISP, wireless interference, DNS filtering, and game-service ports. If both modes crash at the same rendering stage, prioritize drivers, overlays, files, and hardware instead.
Use controlled network comparisons
- Test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if possible.
- Stop large downloads, cloud synchronization, VPNs, and streaming during the test.
- Restart network equipment and check whether other devices lose connectivity at the same time.
- Compare your normal connection with a temporary mobile hotspot. A difference strongly implicates the original network path, though a hotspot is not a long-term performance recommendation.
Do not infer a game-server outage from one disconnect. Record the time, frequency, region or location in-game, and whether reconnecting the client changes the result.

- Exact error text, copied rather than paraphrased, and screenshots where useful.
- Whether you use Steam or the standalone Catnip/Shroud launcher.
- Operating system and version, CPU, GPU, graphics-driver version, and installed RAM.
- The exact time and stage of failure: launcher start, patch, login, loading screen, or in-world play.
- Whether Offline Mode works.
- Whether the official non-Steam patch-server directory loads on your network.
- What changed during testing, such as an administrator launch, file verification, driver update, overlay disablement, or alternate network.
Do not send passwords or unnecessary personal information. This detail lets support distinguish an account issue from a blocked patch path, Steam client failure, or rendering crash.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Launching a standalone executable while trying to repair a Steam installation.
- Assuming a 0% patch means a wrong password before testing patch-server reachability.
- Forwarding every published port before allowing the trusted application through the local firewall.
- Leaving antivirus, firewall, sandboxing, or administrator mode permanently disabled after a test.
- Applying several driver, overlay, rendering, and launch-argument changes at once.
- Treating a 2019 forum suggestion or an individual player’s workaround as an official guarantee.
- Using a historical six-to-eight-hour migration estimate as evidence of a current outage.
The Bottom Line
Use the client-specific path first: current Chaos patcher and BitTorrent reachability checks for standalone, Steam’s own repair workflow for Steam, and driver/overlay diagnostics for crashes. The decisive early split is whether the patch-server directory loads; if it does not, investigate the network path before changing credentials or reinstalling the game.
