Start by identifying which Windows release you own: the original Shrek 2 (retail release 4 May 2004) and Shrek 2: Team Action (retail release 3 November 2004) use different display fixes. Back up the game folder and DocumentsShrek 2, then work through crash causes before changing resolution or widescreen settings. The original game uses Default.ini and a field-of-view (FOV) adjustment; Team Action requires backed-up executable edits. Missing audio has no complete Shrek-specific repair documented, so verify files, Windows output, mixer levels, and sound drivers before trying community patches.
Identify your Shrek 2 release before changing anything
Display fixes are not interchangeable between the two Windows games. The Widescreen Gaming Forum (WSGF) identifies the original Shrek 2 as a 4 May 2004 retail PC release and Shrek 2: Team Action as a separate 3 November 2004 retail release. Use the executable name and installation layout to distinguish them.

If the folder contains a Team Action executable or launcher, follow the Team Action section rather than copying the original game’s INI instructions. If you are unsure, make a backup first and inspect the executable and folder names without deleting or replacing files.

Create recoverable copies before any edit. Copy the complete installation directory to another location, and separately copy the generated DocumentsShrek 2 folder. The game’s FAQ states that deleting this generated folder applies new configuration values but also removes saved games. Keep the backup outside the game directory so a reinstall or cleanup cannot remove it.

- Close the game and its launcher before copying files.
- Keep an untouched copy of the original executable and any original DLLs.
- Record your current resolution, fullscreen preference, and FOV values so you can restore them.
- Do not download replacement DLLs from an unknown mirror; use the files from your legitimate installer, disc, or platform source.
Fix crashes in a safe order
1. Recover from documented save-triggered crashes
The Shrek 2 FAQ documents two save-related situations that can crash the game. Saving during a cutscene and then loading that save can fail. It also reports a crash when a save is loaded twice into a level containing terrain. When either pattern matches your crash, load an earlier save that was created during normal gameplay. If no safe save exists, restart the level instead of repeatedly loading the problematic slot.
2. Repair a missing binkw32.dll error
If startup reports that binkw32.dll is missing, the FAQ attributes the problem to a corrupted or malformed game directory. Restore that file from a trusted copy of your own game media or installation source, or reinstall the game. Do not obtain a random DLL from a download site: a file with the right name can still be altered, incompatible, or unsafe.
3. Apply Windows compatibility settings
Older-PC guidance from SEGA Support recommends compatibility mode for games released before the current Windows version. Apply it to the actual game executable, not only to a desktop shortcut:

- Select Properties, then open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose the Windows version that matches the game’s requirements. If one choice does not help, test another older Windows option one at a time.
- Enable Run this program as an administrator.
- On the file’s General tab, make sure it is not marked hidden or read-only.
- Select Apply, then OK, and launch the executable directly to test.
Compatibility mode is a troubleshooting setting, not a guarantee. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which change affects the crash.

4. Prevent the fullscreen-to-windowed crash
The FAQ warns that a game started in fullscreen can crash when switched to windowed mode for a second time. While troubleshooting, force a windowed start by editing Default.ini and setting:
StartupFullscreen=FalseSave the file, launch windowed, and avoid repeatedly toggling modes until the other problems are resolved. If the game regenerates configuration files, use the backed-up copy of your settings and saves rather than deleting files without a recovery copy.
5. Test after each change
Run the same action that previously failed: start the game, load a known-good save, enter a level, and change no display options during the test. If the crash returns, undo the last change and continue with the next branch. This avoids confusing a save-file problem with a compatibility or display problem.
Restore missing audio on Windows
The available Shrek 2-specific material does not publish a complete, game-specific missing-audio recipe. Start with installation integrity because the documented binkw32.dll startup failure indicates that multimedia files can be missing or corrupted. Then check Windows audio routing before modifying game files.

- Verify the game files. Compare the installation with the original media or use the repair/verify function supplied by your legitimate game platform. If files cannot be restored, perform a clean reinstall after backing up saves.
- Choose the intended output device. In Windows sound settings, select the speakers, headset, or interface you actually use. Disconnect or disable an unwanted display-audio device temporarily if sound is being sent to a monitor.
- Check both volume mixers. Confirm the master volume, the per-application volume for the game, and any hardware mute switch. Start the game before opening the mixer so its process appears in the application list.
- Check in-game audio controls. Restore music, effects, and voice sliders to audible levels and test a scene containing dialogue and effects.
- Update the sound driver. Microsoft’s general crash guidance includes updating the audio driver. Install the current driver supplied by your PC or sound-device manufacturer, then restart Windows.
- Retest an unmodified installation. Remove optional patches temporarily and test the original files. If audio works cleanly, add one community modification at a time and keep a rollback copy.
If audio is still absent after those checks, the evidence does not establish a universal Shrek 2 setting that fixes every Windows system. A clean reinstall with the original multimedia files is safer than replacing individual DLLs from an untrusted source.
Set 1080p and widescreen in the original Shrek 2
For the original release, the permanent resolution method is an INI edit. The values below are examples for a 1920×1080 display; substitute the exact target mode you want.
Edit the viewport values
- Close the game.
- Open the game’s
Default.ini. - Find the
[WinDrv.WindowsClient]section. - Set all four viewport values to the same width and height:
[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=1920
WindowedViewportY=1080
FullscreenViewportX=1920
FullscreenViewportY=1080Use a plain-text editor and preserve the section name and spelling. For 2560×1440, for example, use 2560 for both X entries and 1440 for both Y entries. Do not claim a mode your monitor or Windows display driver cannot provide.

The FAQ says the game reads these changes after the generated DocumentsShrek 2 folder is deleted. Because that deletion removes saves, copy the folder first as described above. After removing the generated folder, launch the game and allow it to recreate its configuration. Restore saves only if they are compatible with the newly generated files.

Use the console for a temporary test
If the console is unlocked, the command below changes resolution for the current session:
SetRes 1024x768This is a temporary alternative, not the permanent INI method. Replace the dimensions with the mode you need when testing. If the command is unavailable, return to the INI procedure rather than altering unrelated files.
Correct the 16:9 camera zoom with FOV
A resolution change alone can make a 16:9 image look excessively zoomed because the original camera field of view was designed around narrower displays. For widescreen, the FAQ gives 101.403290 as the default FOV value instead of 85.0. WSGF also documents changing DesiredFOV and DefaultFOV in User.ini.

- Back up
User.iniand the generated configuration folder. - Open
User.iniin a text editor. - Find the entries named
DesiredFOVandDefaultFOV. - Set the relevant default FOV values to
101.403290. - Save, launch at the target 16:9 resolution, and inspect gameplay rather than only the title screen.
FOV changes affect the camera view, not the game’s underlying art. If the image still appears wrong, check that both viewport axes were changed and that the game did not regenerate an older configuration after you edited it.

Set widescreen in Shrek 2: Team Action
Team Action does not use the original game’s INI workflow. WSGF documents hexadecimal edits to Shrek 2.exe for common targets including 1920×1080, 2560×1440, 2560×1080, 3440×1440, 5760×1080, and 3840×2160.
Use the executable-edit workflow
- Exit the game and launcher.
- Make an untouched copy of
Shrek 2.exeand note its version or file date. - Use a hex editor to locate the byte pattern specified by the WSGF guide for your target resolution.
- Replace only the documented bytes, save the edited executable as a separate working copy, and retain the original.
- Launch the Team Action launcher and select 800×600, as the guide instructs after the executable edit.
- Test gameplay, menus, cutscenes, and loading. If the game fails to start, restore the original executable immediately.
Offsets can shift between Team Action versions. If an offset does not match, do not write bytes at that address blindly; search for the listed byte pattern in the file and verify that the surrounding data matches the guide. A different executable build may require a different pattern or may not be covered by the documented edit.
Optional community widescreen DLL method
The PCGamingWiki Community listing describes modified Engine.dll files used with dgVoodoo2 for several aspect ratios. Treat this as an optional workaround, not a required fix. Keep an untouched copy of the original DLL and remove the modified files if the game becomes unstable.

Test a complete level, a cutscene, the pause menu, and save/load screens before deciding whether the visual gain is worth the interface distortion.

Symptom-based troubleshooting
- Crash while loading one particular save: avoid saves made during cutscenes and the documented double-load situation; use an earlier save or restart the level.
- Crash when switching fullscreen and windowed: set
StartupFullscreen=FalseinDefault.iniand begin in windowed mode. - “binkw32.dll” missing at startup: restore the file from trusted game media or reinstall; do not use an untrusted DLL mirror.
- Game will not start after a resolution edit: restore the backed-up INI or executable, confirm the mode is supported by Windows and the display, and retest without other modifications.
- Game runs but the 16:9 view is too close: for the original release, adjust the FOV values as well as the viewport dimensions.
- Menus look stretched after a widescreen patch: this is a documented limitation of the modified
Engine.dllapproach; restore the original DLL if the interface is unacceptable. - No sound but the game otherwise runs: verify the Windows output device, application mixer level, in-game sliders, installation files, and sound driver in that order.
What to keep when you finish
Store the untouched executable, original DLLs, edited INI files, and save backup together with a short note identifying the game release and target resolution. That makes it possible to undo a patch after a reinstall or Windows change without losing progress. The safest order is always: identify the release, back up, repair crashes and files, apply the smallest display change, then test audio and gameplay before adding optional widescreen components.
