If Call of Duty shaders are stuck compiling on Steam, first leave the game at its main menu and let shader preloading finish. If it does not complete or the error returns, verify that specific game’s files in Steam, then check the driver and conflict guidance for your exact Call of Duty release. The steps differ between games, so do not apply a driver version listed for one title to another.
Before troubleshooting, identify the exact Call of Duty release
“Call of Duty” covers several games with separate PC troubleshooting pages. In Steam, note the full game title, then record the complete shader error message and whether the game is still compiling, has stopped responding, or crashes. Also note your GPU model and installed driver version. This information helps you follow the right release-specific advice and report the problem clearly.
Activision’s Warzone PC troubleshooting page includes a game selector for multiple Call of Duty titles. Use the page for your actual game where available; Warzone’s instructions are not automatically the right fit for another release.
1. Let shader preloading finish at the main menu
Start the game and stay at its main menu while shaders preload. Activision describes shader preloading as part of the first boot process and advises waiting for it to complete before playing. Its Warzone guidance also warns that leaving the main menu stops preloading and can lead to performance issues. Similar instructions appear on its Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare II PC troubleshooting pages.

If the progress appears slow, give it time rather than repeatedly restarting or switching away from the menu. The official pages do not give a universal completion time, and they do not promise that waiting fixes every shader error.
2. Verify the game files in Steam
Activision recommends verifying Steam game files for the reviewed releases. This checks the installation and can repair or redownload files that Steam finds damaged or missing.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the specific Call of Duty game, then choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete its check and any repair or download, then launch the game and let shader preloading run at the main menu.
Steam may need to download files after verification. Let that finish before testing again.

3. Check the driver recommendation for your game and GPU
Driver guidance is release-specific and changes over time. Use the PC troubleshooting page for your exact Call of Duty game and GPU manufacturer; do not install a version simply because it appears on another title’s page.
Recommended Free Tools
For context, Activision’s Warzone page, dated 03/11/26 and accessed 2026-10-03, lists AMD 25.12.1, NVIDIA 591.59 for desktop/notebook and 582.08 for workstation, and Intel 32.0.101.8531. Those are Warzone recommendations, not universal Call of Duty requirements. Activision’s Black Ops 6 page lists different recommended versions and advises rolling back to its listed recommendation if a newer driver causes issues. Check the current matching page before changing your driver.
4. Check for software conflicts
Activision advises Steam players to disable programs that may interfere with Steam. Close unnecessary overlays or other background apps, then test the game. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects shader preloading.

If closing apps is not enough
The release-specific pages suggest a clean boot as a way to isolate background software. Black Ops 6 guidance also calls out device-control or peripheral software, overclocking utilities, and tuning software. Temporarily disable or exit relevant tools, test, and restore your usual settings afterward. Avoid making several system changes at once.
Handle antivirus exceptions carefully
Activision’s Warzone page suggests a game-folder antivirus exception when antivirus interference is suspected. Do not turn off antivirus protection wholesale. Only consider an exception for the exact game folder, and only if you understand the security trade-off.
5. Contact Activision if the error persists
If preloading, Steam verification, the matching driver guidance, and conflict checks do not resolve the issue, use Activision support for your specific game. Its support pages provide a PC crash report option where available. Include the exact error text, game title and build, GPU, driver version, whether the game stalls or crashes, and the steps you already tried. That gives support concrete details to investigate rather than a general report that shaders will not compile.
Activision’s reviewed troubleshooting pages do not establish a guaranteed fix or a typical resolution time for every shader compilation error. The right next step depends on the release and the details of the failure.
