For reproducing that old setup, the historical workaround was to use Chrome 72 with a matching ChromeDriver release. For a maintained test environment, move to a supported Selenium/browser combination instead; do not treat Chrome 72 as a current general-purpose recommendation.
What the Chrome 73 screenshot failure looked like
A documented Windows incident reported a timeout while Selenium captured a screenshot from Chrome launched by Jenkins or a similar service. The error included Timed out receiving message from renderer; ChromeDriver retried the screenshot, then Selenium raised a timeout from the screenshot call.
The example environment was Chrome 73.0.3683.86, ChromeDriver 73.0.3683.68, Selenium 3.11.0, and Windows 10. This is one reported configuration, not evidence that every Chrome 73 screenshot fails. The incident report is at Stack Overflow.
Why ChromeDriver was not identified as the root cause
The Stack Overflow answer reproduces statements attributed to John Chen, identified there as a ChromeDriver owner. The quoted diagnosis says Chrome 73 had issues taking screenshots when started by a service such as Jenkins or Task Scheduler on Windows, and that the root cause was in Chrome 73.x rather than ChromeDriver. The attribution is secondhand: it is reproduced on Stack Overflow and points to Chromium issue 942023.

ChromeDriver 73.0.3683.68 is listed as supporting Chrome 73, but its published fixes do not name this screenshot issue. Its release entry is available at ChromeDriver downloads. A matching browser/driver pair is sensible compatibility practice, but installing that driver alone was not documented as a fix for this incident.

The historical Chrome 72 workaround and its versions come from the incident report above. The current compatibility guidance is in Selenium’s Chrome documentation. The sources do not establish Chrome 72’s current security or support status, so do not deploy it as a general browsing configuration.

Diagnose the failure before changing versions
- Record the versions from the failing run. Capture the exact Chrome, ChromeDriver, Selenium, and Windows versions. Do not assume the browser and driver versions installed interactively are the ones Jenkins runs.
- Record how Chrome starts. Determine whether it runs in a Jenkins process, Windows service, scheduled task, or an interactive desktop session. The reported issue specifically involved a service-style launch on Windows.
- Verify the failure is in screenshot capture. Selenium exposes screenshot capture as an API that saves the current window as PNG. In the reported stack trace, the failure occurred at
getScreenshotAsin a listener. Check whether navigation and other test actions completed before that call. - Compare a service run with an interactive run. If the same test works interactively but times out under the service account, that difference is useful evidence that your setup resembles the reported launch context. It does not by itself prove the same underlying browser defect.
- Change one variable at a time. First verify the actual versions and launch context; then test the historical workaround only if reproducing the legacy case, or migrate the stack if maintaining current tests.
Historical workaround: test Chrome 72 in an isolated environment
For the legacy Chrome 73 setup, the reported workaround was to downgrade the browser to Chrome 72 and pair it with ChromeDriver 2.46 or 72.0.3626.69. Use a disposable machine, VM, or otherwise isolated test environment so this version experiment does not alter unrelated jobs.
- Preserve the failing job configuration and record its current browser and driver versions.
- Install Chrome 72 in the isolated test environment and select one of the reported driver versions: ChromeDriver 2.46 or 72.0.3626.69.
- Configure the test job to launch that browser and driver pair, rather than relying on whatever executable happens to be on the machine’s default path.
- Run the same screenshot test under the same Windows service or Jenkins launch context.
- Compare the screenshot result and logs with the Chrome 73 run. If it still fails, do not assume the historical issue explains your failure; investigate the service account, browser startup, page state, and other errors independently.
This workaround is useful as a historical reproduction or a constrained legacy test, not as evidence that the older versions are suitable for a present-day production or internet-facing machine.

For a maintained setup, use a supported Selenium and Chrome pair
Selenium’s Chrome documentation says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome 75 and later by default and advises matching the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions. Use that guidance when moving away from the legacy Chrome 73 environment. Check the documentation for the Selenium version and setup you actually deploy; do not infer compatibility for Selenium 3.11.0 from guidance written for Selenium 4.
- Choose a Chrome version supported by the Selenium version in your project.
- Install or manage a ChromeDriver whose major version matches Chrome’s major version.
- Confirm the Jenkins or service account launches the intended browser and driver binaries.
- Run a minimal test that opens a page and captures a screenshot, then run the full job.
- Keep the selected browser and driver versions explicit in your environment management so a machine-level browser update does not silently change the test stack.
For current compatibility guidance, consult Selenium’s Chrome browser documentation. The cited sources do not establish a universal fix for all renderer timeouts; if a supported pair still fails, diagnose the specific job rather than attributing it automatically to Chrome 73.

Separate screenshot errors from page and test errors
A screenshot timeout means the capture operation did not finish as expected; it does not necessarily mean the page failed to load or that the test’s assertions are wrong. Locate the first failing operation in the Selenium log. If the exception occurs at getScreenshotAs, investigate capture and browser responsiveness separately from earlier navigation or application failures.
- If navigation itself times out, address navigation and page readiness before treating the screenshot as the cause.
- If the page is available but only the capture call times out in a Chrome 73 service launch, compare the environment to the reported incident.
- If capture fails in a different browser version or launch context, do not assume the Chrome 73 diagnosis applies.
