Start with the requirements check: SCP: Project Pneuma requires a supported dedicated GPU, Windows 10 or 11, DirectX 12, 8 GB of RAM, and an SSD. Integrated graphics and hard-disk installs are outside the official specification. If your PC passes that gate, update Windows and the graphics driver, verify the Steam installation, disable overlays, and reset graphics settings. These are diagnostic steps rather than guaranteed fixes; the game is in Early Access and its developer acknowledges ongoing optimisation work and minor bugs.
This guide separates failures that happen before the menu, during shader loading, after the intro, and in larger environments. It also explains what evidence to collect when a black screen or repeatable crash remains, because no official Project Pneuma-specific hotfix or launch parameter is currently documented.
Check the official requirements before changing software
A crash can be caused by corrupted files or an overlay, but troubleshooting cannot compensate for unsupported hardware. Compare your system with the specifications published for SCP: Project Pneuma on Steam.

|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 | Windows 11 | Use a fully updated 64-bit installation; an older or 32-bit system is not within the listed target. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | Intel Core i5-12600K or AMD Ryzen 5 7600 | Large environments can expose CPU headroom limits, especially when background applications are active. |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM | Eight gigabytes is the floor, not a promise of smooth play while other programs are open. |
| Graphics | Nvidia GTX 1650 or AMD RX 6500 XT | Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti or AMD RX 6700 XT | Integrated graphics are explicitly unsupported. A GPU below the minimum may fail before the menu or during loading. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 | The adapter and driver must provide working DirectX 12 support. |
| Storage | 30 GB on an SSD | 30 GB on an SSD | An SSD is required; moving the installation from a hard disk is a relevant hardware fix, not an optional performance tweak. |
If you use integrated graphics
The official requirements do not support integrated graphics. If the game refuses to start, shows a black screen, or crashes while loading on an integrated adapter, treat the hardware as the primary cause. Driver changes and launch options may alter the symptom but cannot make an unsupported GPU a supported one.

If the game is on a hard disk
Steam may report enough free space while the installation still violates the requirement. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and use Move install folder if your client offers that option. Select an SSD with at least 30 GB free plus normal working-space headroom, then retest before changing other settings.
Understand the Early Access context
Project Pneuma is a single-player psychological survival-horror game set in the ruins of SCP Foundation Site-63. Steam identifies Chapter I as the available experience and says most players take around two or more hours to complete it. Zatun says it expects Early Access to last approximately six to 12 months, while also acknowledging active performance optimisation, frame-rate drops for players at or near minimum specification in larger environments, ongoing interface and quality-of-life work, and some minor bugs.
That status changes how you interpret a failure. A repeatable crash in one room is useful bug evidence; it is not automatically proof that your installation is damaged. Conversely, a machine below the listed GPU or storage requirement should be upgraded or moved to a compliant configuration before spending hours on software experiments.

1. Record your baseline
- Write down your Windows edition and version. Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and note the result. - Record the exact GPU model and driver version. You can use Settings > System > About for basic hardware information and the GPU manufacturer’s control panel for the installed driver version.
- Confirm the game is installed on an SSD and that at least 30 GB is available on that drive.
- Close unrelated launchers, browsers with many tabs, capture tools, hardware monitors, and RGB utilities before the first controlled test.
- Note where the failure occurs: immediately after pressing Play, during a splash screen, while shaders compile, after the menu, after the intro, or in a particular large environment.
Keep this baseline even if the first fix works. It makes a later regression or support report much easier to explain.
2. Update Windows and the graphics driver
- Open Settings > Windows Update, install all available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Install the current driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer for your exact model and Windows version. Do not use a driver intended for a different adapter.
- Restart again after the driver installation, even if the installer does not insist on a reboot.
- Launch Project Pneuma with no overlay or recording software active. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, record that fact rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers without a test plan.
A current driver is a prerequisite for a fair test, not proof that the game will run. Early Access builds can still contain title-specific defects after the driver is updated.
3. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click SCP: Project Pneuma and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Allow any pending game update to complete, then restart Steam and test again.
Verification replaces missing or altered files. It does not repair unsupported hardware, Windows components, a failing SSD, or a bug in the current build.
4. Remove overlay and injection variables
Temporarily disable Steam Overlay, recording software, RGB and hardware-monitoring overlays, frame-rate counters, and other third-party injectors. Re-test after each category is disabled. If the game launches only after a particular overlay is removed, re-enable the others one by one to identify the conflict.

- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
Do not leave every overlay disabled permanently without checking. The purpose is isolation: once you know which component changes the behaviour, you can decide whether to update, configure, or remove that component.
5. Reset the game’s graphics state
If you can reach the menu, restore the default graphics preset first. Then lower demanding options one at a time and test the same scene. Save the result of each test, especially when the failure happens in a larger environment where the developer has acknowledged frame-rate drops near the minimum specification.
If the game cannot reach its menu, use Steam’s launch-options field only for a documented option supported by your current build:
- Open Library, right-click the game, and select Properties.
- Stay on General and locate Launch Options.
- Enter one temporary windowed or lower-resolution option at a time, using syntax documented for the build or by the developer.
- Close the Properties window and launch the game.
- Remove the option after testing so it does not mask the normal configuration.
No Project Pneuma-specific launch parameter is established in the available official material. Avoid copying a flag simply because it helped a different game.

6. Reproduce the failure deliberately
Once the baseline is clean, perform the smallest repeatable test. For example, note whether the crash happens every time after selecting New Game, only while a shader screen is visible, or only when entering one named area. Record whether audio continues behind a black display, whether the application closes to desktop, and whether Steam shows a crash notice.
Repeat the test after only one change. This distinguishes a file-integrity problem from a driver or overlay conflict and gives the developer a usable reproduction path.
7. Preserve evidence and report it
Do not delete crash files or clear temporary folders before collecting evidence. The searched official information does not publish a fixed Project Pneuma crash-log path, so look for files created at the time of the failure in the game’s installation and user-data locations without claiming a path that has not been documented. Include the file name and timestamp if you find one.

Choose the branch that matches your symptom
The game closes immediately after pressing Play
- Re-check the dedicated-GPU requirement, DirectX 12 support, Windows version, and SSD location.
- Verify files, install the current GPU driver, reboot, and test with overlays disabled.
- If the crash persists, note whether Steam briefly shows a running state and whether any error dialog appears.
- A system using integrated graphics or a GPU below GTX 1650/RX 6500 XT is outside the official minimum; software changes may not solve the failure.
The game reaches a splash screen, then shows a black screen
- Wait long enough to distinguish a temporary shader or loading pause from a permanent hang, while watching whether audio continues.
- Try one documented windowed or lower-resolution launch option, then remove it after the test.
- Disable overlays and capture hooks, verify files, and retest after a clean reboot.
- Record the GPU driver, Windows version, resolution, and whether the black screen is reproducible.
A Steam Community post about the different game SCP: 5K reports that entering -ngxdisable fixed one user’s black screen. That is anecdotal, title-specific evidence and is not a confirmed solution for Project Pneuma. Do not treat it as an official Pneuma launch parameter.
The crash occurs during shader loading
Capture the exact stage and whether the crash happens on every launch or only after a driver change. Verify files, update the driver, disable injectors, and test at a lower resolution or in a temporary windowed mode if a documented option exists. Because no official Pneuma-specific shader reset procedure is published, avoid deleting arbitrary folders or registry entries; preserve the original state for diagnosis.
The game crashes after the intro or in a large environment
Compare your hardware with the minimum and recommended tiers, close background applications, and lower graphics settings after reaching the menu. The developer specifically warns that players on or near minimum specifications may see frame-rate drops in larger environments. A repeatable crash at one location should be reported with the area, preceding action, settings, and whether reducing the load changes the outcome.
Steam reports an error or refuses to start the executable
- Complete the file-integrity check and any pending Steam update.
- Confirm the install drive is an SSD and has free space beyond the listed 30 GB requirement.
- Restart Steam and Windows after updates.
- Remove temporary launch options and third-party injectors.
- If the error remains, quote the exact wording in your report instead of paraphrasing it.
Make a sensible hardware decision
Use the following comparison to decide whether continued software troubleshooting is worthwhile.
| Your configuration | Interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated graphics | Not supported by the official requirements. | Use a system with a dedicated GPU before expecting a software fix. |
| Dedicated GPU below GTX 1650 or RX 6500 XT | Below minimum graphics capability. | Upgrade or test on a compliant PC; document the current hardware if reporting the failure. |
| GTX 1650/RX 6500 XT class, 8 GB RAM | Meets the minimum target but has little headroom. | Use an SSD, close background programs, keep drivers current, and expect that larger environments may expose performance limits. |
| RTX 3060 Ti/RX 6700 XT class, 16 GB RAM | Matches the recommended tier listed by Steam. | Continue software isolation if crashes persist; hardware alone does not rule out an Early Access bug. |
| Game installed on a hard disk | Fails the stated storage requirement regardless of free capacity. | Move the library to an SSD and retest from the clean baseline. |
What not to do
- Do not present a tip for SCP: 5K as a Project Pneuma fix.
- Do not assume a black screen proves the GPU is defective; audio, repeatability, and the point of failure provide more useful evidence.
- Do not change drivers, launch options, graphics settings, and overlays simultaneously.
- Do not delete unidentified folders or registry keys when the developer has not published a reset procedure.
- Do not describe a machine below the official minimum as a supported configuration merely because another game runs on it.
- Do not keep an experimental launch option enabled after testing; remove it so future results reflect the normal build.
Prepare a report that can be acted on
Include the following in one post or message:
- Game title and the point of failure: before menu, shader loading, after intro, or named environment.
- Windows edition and version.
- CPU, GPU, RAM amount, DirectX 12 support, and whether the game is on an SSD.
- GPU driver version and the date the problem began.
- Whether Steam file verification completed successfully.
- Which overlays or injectors were disabled.
- Whether audio continued during a black screen.
- Exact error text, crash timestamp, and any preserved log filename.
- The shortest sequence that reproduces the problem.
This level of detail is especially important while the project remains in Early Access. It lets a small development team separate unsupported configurations, local installation problems, and reproducible build defects.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing software settings when the machine is below the official GPU requirement, uses integrated graphics, or runs the game from a hard disk. Move to supported hardware first. If the system meets the requirements and the crash survives updates, verification, overlay isolation, and a clean graphics test, preserve the evidence and report the reproducible steps. At that point, repeated reinstalls are less useful than a clear bug report and a future game update.
