If Safari keeps returning to the wrong search engine, set the default in Safari’s settings on the device you’re using. On Mac, check both the regular and Private Browsing search-engine settings; on iPhone, change the Search Engine setting in iOS Settings. If the choice still seems to change, compare profiles and check extensions before altering device-management settings.

Fix the search engine on a Mac

  1. Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings > Search.
  2. Under Search engine, select the engine you want for regular browsing. Apple’s Safari User Guide identifies this as the place to change the setting.
  3. If the wrong engine appears only in private windows, set Private Browsing search engine separately. Mac Safari has a distinct control for private browsing.
  4. If the issue continues, note whether it occurs in a particular Safari profile. Review extensions for the relevant profile and turn off an unfamiliar or unnecessary extension, then test again before changing another. Profiles can manage extensions separately. Apple explains Safari profiles.

For a one-time search with a different engine, clear the Smart Search field and choose an engine from its magnifying-glass menu. This changes the selection from that field’s menu; use Search settings to set the regular preference. See Apple’s toolbar customization guide.

Fix the search engine on an iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Search > Search Engine.
  2. Choose the engine you want, then return to the previous screen. Apple’s iPhone User Guide says users can select an alternative search engine as the default for web searches.
  3. If the selection seems to change, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions. Review the installed extensions and what they do. Turn off a suspect extension and retest before changing another. Extensions can customize Safari, but that alone does not establish that one caused the search-engine change.
  4. Check which Safari profile you’re using and which extensions are allowed for it. Profiles are managed in Safari settings, and an extension can be enabled for selected profiles. Apple says profiles can appear on other devices using the same Apple Account when Safari 17 or later is in use and Safari is enabled in iCloud settings. That profile documentation does not establish that the search-engine preference syncs.
  5. If the device is managed or a setting is unavailable, open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and identify any configuration profile. Profiles may be used for work or school networks and accounts. Don’t delete a work or school profile without understanding its purpose or consulting the administrator: Apple says removing one also deletes its associated settings, apps, and data. See Apple’s configuration profile guidance.

How to narrow down what is changing

First compare the exact context where the unexpected engine appears: regular or private browsing on Mac, the active Safari profile, and the extensions allowed in that profile. On iPhone, check extensions and profiles, then consider whether a configuration profile manages the device. These are useful checks, not proof of a particular cause. The available Apple guidance describes settings and controls; it does not establish a universal cause or diagnose a specific device.

  • Only Mac private windows: check Private Browsing search engine, not just the regular Search engine.
  • Only one profile or browsing context: compare that profile’s extension state with the one where the intended engine appears.
  • iPhone setting unavailable or managed: inspect VPN & Device Management, and ask the organization’s administrator before removing a profile.

The setting is built into Safari and iOS; a separate utility or hardware purchase is not needed to change it.
