Most RoomBattle failures on Switch can be isolated without replacing hardware: first reconnect and test the controller, then run the Switch internet test, record NAT type and latency, and finally separate Wi-Fi trouble from router or ISP trouble with a wired test. A Pro Controller or wired connection is not established as a RoomBattle requirement; they are useful alternatives for diagnosis.

Work through the checks in order. The step that changes the symptom—controller reconnecting, NAT improving, or a wired match succeeding—identifies the layer that needs attention.

Start with this 10-minute checklist

  1. Open Controllers from the HOME Menu, choose Change Grip/Order, and reconnect the controller.
  2. Charge the controller, move it close to the console, verify that it is paired, and turn off flight mode.
  3. Run the Switch internet connection test. Record NAT type, download speed, and upload speed; Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting flow shows 3 Mbps or higher as the download-speed threshold.
  4. If the connection test is reasonable, move the Switch about 3 to 5 metres (10 to 15 feet) from the router, remove nearby interference, and power-cycle the network.
  5. If possible, test with Ethernet. A dock without a built-in LAN port requires a USB LAN adapter.
  6. Note whether the failure affects every opponent or only one friend. A one-friend failure often requires checks on both players’ networks.
  7. For error 2318-0006, move the console closer to the router and create a new internet connection, selecting the correct network and confirming a strong signal.

Do not jump straight to a replacement controller or a new router. The sequence above distinguishes pairing, radio interference, NAT, latency, Wi-Fi, and wider internet problems.

Fix a controller that disconnects or is not detected

Reconnect through Change Grip/Order

From the HOME Menu, open Controllers, select Change Grip/Order, and reconnect the controller using its normal pairing action. This forces the console to rediscover the controller before you test RoomBattle again.

While in this screen, check that the intended controller appears and that no unwanted controllers are occupying the console’s connection limit. Nintendo says a Switch can have up to eight controllers connected at once. Disconnect unused controllers if several are paired.

Charge, reduce distance, and check flight mode

  • Charge the Joy-Con or other wireless controller before diagnosing a radio fault.
  • Use the controller close to the console during the test. A connection that works nearby but fails at normal seating distance points to range, obstruction, or interference rather than RoomBattle matchmaking.
  • Confirm that the controller is paired with this Switch.
  • Turn off flight mode; wireless controller communication will not work normally while wireless radios are disabled.

Reset a problematic Joy-Con

Nintendo lists intermittent response, lost connection, and desynchronisation as common Joy-Con symptoms. Press the Joy-Con’s SYNC button to reset it, then reconnect the controller wirelessly. Charge it, keep it close to the console, and remove nearby sources of radio interference before trying RoomBattle again.

Interference can come from microwaves, cordless devices, audiovisual equipment, or a metal TV stand. Move those items away from the console and controller for the test. If the Joy-Con continues to disconnect in the HOME Menu or in other games after resetting and charging, Nintendo’s guidance is to arrange service rather than treating RoomBattle as the cause.

Use a Pro Controller as a diagnostic, not a requirement

In TV mode, connect a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to the dock with a USB charging cable to pair it. This gives you a second controller path: USB-to-dock pairing avoids the initial wireless pairing step and helps determine whether the fault follows a particular Joy-Con.

If RoomBattle works with the second controller, test the original controller in another game. A failure that follows the original controller indicates controller hardware, battery, pairing, or radio conditions. If both controllers fail in several games, return to the console’s wireless and network checks. No developer documentation here establishes that RoomBattle requires a Pro Controller.

Check whether the Switch network can support matchmaking

Run the built-in connection test

Use the Switch’s internet connection test before changing game settings. Record the displayed NAT type, download speed, and upload speed. These values are more useful than a generic statement that the console is “online”: a console can browse or reach the eShop while peer-to-peer matchmaking still fails.

Nintendo describes NAT Type A as preferred and generally suitable for connecting with other players. Type B is compatible with most other NAT types. Type C can have difficulty with more restrictive peers, and Type D is generally limited to connecting with Type A. The exact combination of two players’ NAT types matters, so compare results when only one friend cannot connect.

Interpret latency and speed correctly

Download speed alone does not prove that matchmaking will work. Nintendo warns that a large amount of latency can make matchmaking time out. Use the test as a baseline, then compare it with the actual symptom: a fast result with repeated timeouts suggests latency, NAT, or router behavior rather than insufficient bandwidth.

Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting flow shows 3 Mbps or higher as its download-speed threshold. Treat that as an operational threshold from Nintendo’s guidance, not a guaranteed RoomBattle requirement; the game may use different traffic patterns, and upload quality and latency still matter.

Apply the low-risk wireless fixes

  1. Temporarily turn off IPv6 on the home network if the Switch test and other checks do not explain the failure.
  2. Place the console about 3 to 5 metres (10 to 15 feet) from the router during testing. This distance is a troubleshooting position, not a permanent placement rule.
  3. Remove metal objects and electronic devices that could interfere with the wireless path.
  4. Power-cycle the home network: shut down the modem and router, allow them to finish powering off, restart them, wait for internet service to return, and then repeat the Switch connection test.

After each change, run the test again and try the same RoomBattle action. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to tell which condition mattered.

Separate Wi-Fi trouble from router, cable, and ISP trouble

Perform a wired test

A wired test is the fastest way to isolate wireless conditions. In TV mode, connect the Switch dock to the network with Ethernet. If the dock has no LAN port, use a USB LAN adapter. Repeat the internet test and then try the same matchmaking or friend connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Wired succeeds, Wi-Fi fails: investigate wireless distance, interference, channel conditions, or the console’s position.
  • Both wired and Wi-Fi fail: investigate NAT, router configuration, modem service, or the ISP.
  • Neither test reaches the internet: check the selected network and the modem or ISP before changing RoomBattle settings.

Bypass other networking equipment

Nintendo recommends connecting directly to the modem when possible, bypassing additional routers, mesh nodes, switches, or other networking devices. This is a temporary diagnostic arrangement; reconnect your normal equipment after the test.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If the direct connection works, the bypassed router or intermediate device is the likely source. Check that device for firmware updates and, only after recording your current settings, consider a factory reset. A reset erases custom Wi-Fi names, passwords, port rules, and other configuration, so it should not be the first step.

Check the Ethernet path

Try another Ethernet cable if the original may be damaged. A link that drops or negotiates unreliably can look like a matchmaking timeout. Confirm that the USB LAN adapter is seated securely in the dock and that the network test is actually using the wired connection before drawing a conclusion.

Know when to contact the ISP

If a direct-to-modem test still fails, contact the internet service provider. Provide the recorded NAT type, speeds, times of failure, and whether the problem affects every online player. If the direct test works but the normal router path fails, contact the router manufacturer instead and ask about firmware and configuration for peer-to-peer connections.

Diagnose failures by who can or cannot connect

Observed pattern Most useful next check What it tells you
Controller disconnects in the HOME Menu or multiple games Reset and recharge the controller; remove interference; test another controller The fault is probably pairing, battery, radio, or controller hardware rather than RoomBattle
RoomBattle fails with every opponent Run the internet test, inspect NAT and latency, then test wired The local Switch, router, or internet path remains the main suspect
RoomBattle fails only with one friend Have that friend repeat the same NAT, latency, and wired/Wi-Fi checks Either player’s network can block the peer-to-peer session
Matchmaking times out despite acceptable speed Check latency, NAT type, IPv6, distance from router, and interference Bandwidth is not the only condition controlling matchmaking
Wired matchmaking works but Wi-Fi does not Reposition the console and router; remove interference; improve the wireless path The wireless segment is the differentiator
2318-0006 appears Move the console closer and create a new internet connection Follow Nintendo’s dedicated procedure before broader router changes

When testing with a friend, change one side at a time and record which NAT type and connection method each player used. That prevents a successful change on one network from being mistaken for a RoomBattle server fix.

Fix error 2318-0006

Nintendo associates error 2318-0006 with being unable to complete matchmaking, being disconnected from an online match, or being unable to start a local wireless game. Use this focused procedure:

  1. Move the Switch closer to the router—Nintendo’s guidance uses about 3 to 4 metres (10 to 15 feet).
  2. Open the Switch internet settings and choose to create a new internet connection.
  3. Select the correct Wi-Fi network, enter its password if requested, and confirm that the signal is strong.
  4. Run the connection test and note the new NAT type, speeds, and any latency-related failure.
  5. Retry the same RoomBattle mode. If the error returns, perform the wired or direct-to-modem isolation tests rather than repeatedly recreating the same wireless profile.

If the error occurs only when joining one person, have that person complete the same procedure. If it occurs with everyone, keep the focus on the local network and the console until a wired or direct test changes the result.

Choosing between controller and network options

Option Pairing or connection path Battery or distance considerations Best use
Wireless Joy-Con Wireless pairing through Controllers > Change Grip/Order Requires charge; sensitive to distance and radio interference Normal handheld or docked play after a clean pairing test
Pro Controller USB cable to the dock in TV mode for pairing, then wireless use Charge state and wireless conditions still matter after pairing Diagnostic comparison when a Joy-Con is suspect
Wi-Fi connection Switch connects to the router wirelessly Distance, metal, electronics, and latency can affect sessions Convenient testing after the connection test is acceptable
Ethernet through the dock Ethernet cable; USB LAN adapter if the dock lacks a LAN port Avoids the console-to-router wireless segment; cable and adapter must work Separating Wi-Fi faults from router or ISP faults
Direct-to-modem test Switch network path bypasses other networking devices Temporary diagnostic arrangement Determining whether a router or intermediate device is responsible

These are troubleshooting paths, not proof of RoomBattle compatibility requirements. The available evidence does not establish that the game mandates a Pro Controller, Ethernet, a particular NAT type, or a specific router model.

When the usual fixes do not work

Keep a short test record

  • Controller used and whether it was reset, charged, or paired by USB.
  • Whether the controller fails in the HOME Menu, another game, or only RoomBattle.
  • NAT type, download speed, upload speed, and any latency indication from the Switch test.
  • Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, approximate console-to-router distance, and whether IPv6 was disabled.
  • Whether every opponent fails or only one friend, plus the exact error code and time.

This record lets Nintendo, the router manufacturer, the ISP, or the game’s own support team reproduce the relevant condition instead of receiving only “online play does not work.”

Use the game’s support channel for game-specific faults

If the controller works in the HOME Menu and other games, the Switch connection test is stable, and a wired or direct network path still fails only in RoomBattle, the remaining possibility is game-specific matchmaking, maintenance, or compatibility behavior. No RoomBattle developer or publisher support page, server-status notice, error list, or confirmed controller-compatibility document is established here. Check RoomBattle’s own support channels for current service notices and version-specific instructions rather than assuming that a Nintendo network error proves a RoomBattle server outage.

Escalate hardware only after isolation

Replace or service a controller when it continues to disconnect after reset, charging, close-range testing, and interference removal, especially if the same behavior appears in multiple games. Consider a new Ethernet cable or USB LAN adapter only when the wired test itself is unreliable. A replacement router is justified only after direct and alternate-path tests implicate the router; otherwise it can add cost without addressing an ISP, NAT, or controller problem.

Recommended order for a reliable diagnosis

  1. Controller layer: Change Grip/Order, charge, reset SYNC, move closer, remove interference, and test another controller.
  2. Console network layer: Run the internet test and write down NAT, speeds, and latency symptoms.
  3. Wireless layer: Use the 3-to-5-metre test position, remove electronic or metal interference, power-cycle the network, and temporarily disable IPv6.
  4. Wired layer: Use Ethernet with a USB LAN adapter when needed; try another cable.
  5. Router and ISP layer: Bypass other devices, test directly to the modem, then contact the router manufacturer or ISP based on the result.
  6. Peer or game layer: If only one friend fails, test both networks; if all hardware and network paths pass but RoomBattle alone fails, consult the game’s support channel.
