If ROLLA crashes, opens to a black screen, or ignores your controller, troubleshoot in this order: restart Steam and the PC, verify the installed files, identify whether the game is still running, then test one display or input change at a time. For controller failures, disconnect every other gamepad, wheel, joystick, and virtual device before testing Steam Input with only the intended controller connected. ROLLA has partial general controller support, while its Steam Deck test reports a fully functional default configuration; neither label guarantees every Windows, Bluetooth, or display setup.
Start by identifying exactly where ROLLA fails
The symptom determines the safest branch. Record what happens after you click Play and repeat the test after each change so you know which action mattered.
| What you see | What it usually tells you to test first |
|---|---|
| Steam shows the game briefly, then it closes before a window appears | Steam restart, computer restart, and installed-file verification |
| A window is black but audio, keyboard input, or the Steam overlay still responds | Display mode, focus, overlay, capture, or graphics conflict rather than an immediate process exit |
| The picture freezes while sound continues | Check focus and overlays, then test one graphics or display change |
| The menu appears but buttons do nothing | Isolate controllers and virtual devices, then test the per-game Steam Input setting |
| Buttons work but prompts are wrong | Compare the selected Steam Input state and the connected controller type |
A black display does not prove that ROLLA crashed. Press a menu key, move the mouse, or open the Steam overlay. Continuing audio or a responding overlay means the process may still be alive and the problem is more likely rendering, focus, or an overlay conflict.
What is confirmed about ROLLA on Steam
ROLLA is an action and arcade horror game from Tyrmä Games, published by Pantaloon. SteamDB records its Steam release on 13 October 2026. The game is built around rolling, eating, and growing from a small nuisance into a city-ending problem. The BONE & SINEW EDITION contains ROLLA, a special skin, and the official soundtrack; the edition does not change the troubleshooting sequence below.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Current Steam metadata lists partial controller support. It specifically identifies DualShock Controllers over USB and DualSense Controllers over USB. That is narrower than a promise that every Windows controller, wireless connection, Bluetooth stack, wheel, or remapping utility will work.
SteamDB’s Steam Deck test, recorded on 18 September 2026, marks ROLLA Playable. The test reports a fully functional default controller configuration, matching controller glyphs, good performance with the default graphics configuration, and successful operation on SteamOS with Proton stable recommended. These are compatibility-test results, not a guarantee for every external display, dock, custom control layout, or Windows installation.

Prepare a reversible troubleshooting session
- Close ROLLA completely before changing a setting. If Steam still says it is running, wait for the process to exit or restart Steam.
- Write down your platform: Windows, SteamOS, or Steam Deck; note whether the controller is wired USB, Bluetooth, wireless with a receiver, or virtual.
- Change one variable per launch. If you disable an overlay and change resolution at the same time, you cannot tell which action affected the result.
- Back up the save file before deleting, editing, or resetting anything.
- Keep a short test log with the time, Steam Input state, display mode, controller connection, and result. This prevents repeating the same combination and gives support a reproducible sequence.
Fix ROLLA crashes or failure to launch
1. Restart Steam, then restart the computer
- Exit ROLLA and quit Steam from the Steam menu. Reopen Steam and try ROLLA once.
- If it still closes or never creates a usable window, restart the computer.
- Launch ROLLA again before changing any other setting.
This is Steam’s first-line procedure for a game that will not launch. It also clears a stuck Steam client, pending controller state, or a process left behind by an earlier failed launch.
2. Verify the installed files
- Open the Steam Library and right-click ROLLA.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch ROLLA after verification completes.
Verification replaces missing or damaged files; it does not reset your graphics configuration or prove that a driver, overlay, or controller utility is compatible. Run it after the restart, not at the same time as several unrelated changes.
3. Separate a game failure from a Steam-client failure
If ROLLA still fails after a restart and verification, use Steam’s general client troubleshooting and the game’s community or support channels. Record the exact stage, whether an error appears, and whether the process remains visible in Steam. The available documentation does not provide a developer-confirmed ROLLA launch flag or a universal crash workaround, so avoid adding random launch options as if they were official fixes.

Fix a ROLLA black screen or frozen picture
Check whether the process is still running
With the black screen visible, press a menu key, move the mouse, and open the Steam overlay. Listen for continuing audio. A responding overlay or ongoing sound indicates that ROLLA may be running behind a rendering or focus problem. If the window immediately disappears and Steam reports the game stopped, return to the crash procedure instead.

- Exit ROLLA, restart Steam, and restart the computer.
- Verify files through Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Launch with your normal display and controller setup to establish a clean result.
Do not start by deleting the save or applying several graphics tweaks. The documented Steam procedure is restart and verification; no searched source proves that one particular ROLLA resolution, renderer, or launch option is the official black-screen fix.
Remove overlay and capture conflicts
Temporarily disable nonessential overlays, screen-capture tools, GPU monitoring tools, and input utilities, then test ROLLA again. Steam’s controller guidance identifies screen-capture software, Razer Synapse, XInput emulators, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, Skype or Skypehost, and ZoneAlarm among programs that can interfere with controller behavior. Similar hooks can complicate a black-screen diagnosis even when they are not the root cause. Close one category at a time and relaunch after each change.
Test one display change at a time
If the game is running but the image is unusable, change a single display option, such as windowed mode or a different resolution, using the game’s available settings. Relaunch and record the result. If one change restores the picture, keep that setting while you investigate other conflicts. Do not claim that windowed mode or a particular resolution is a guaranteed ROLLA fix; the evidence supports only controlled testing.
Fix ROLLA controller detection and wrong buttons
1. Strip the setup down to one physical controller
- Exit ROLLA.
- Disconnect every other gamepad, steering wheel, joystick, arcade device, and virtual-gamepad device.
- Close XInput emulators and remapping utilities.
- Connect only the controller you intend to use.
- Start ROLLA and test the menu.
Steam’s controller guidance recommends this isolation method because some games prioritize one input style or device. A second gamepad, wheel, virtual XInput device, or remapper can take the slot ROLLA is trying to read.
2. Test the per-game Steam Input state
- In the Steam Library, right-click ROLLA and select Properties.
- Open the Controller page.
- Change the per-game Steam Input setting to a different available state. Depending on Steam’s current client labels, you may see a default, enabled, or disabled choice.
- Close Properties, restart ROLLA, and test the same controller.
- If the result is worse, return to the previous state and test the next available option only after another restart.
Steam Input is configured per game, so a global controller preference does not necessarily match ROLLA’s setting. Changing the state can alter whether Steam presents a physical device directly or exposes a translated input device, which can also change button prompts.

3. Prefer a wired USB diagnostic connection
Because ROLLA’s metadata specifically lists USB DualShock and USB DualSense support, a wired USB controller is a useful diagnostic replacement for a Bluetooth or wireless setup. It is not a promise that every wired model will work, and it is not evidence that buying a particular controller will cure a crash. The purpose is to remove wireless pairing, battery, receiver, and Bluetooth-driver variables from the test.
4. Reconnect devices one at a time
If the isolated controller works, close ROLLA, reconnect one additional device, and relaunch. Repeat until the failure returns. The last device or utility added is the likely conflict; leave it disconnected while playing or investigate its remapping and virtual-device settings separately.
5. Interpret button prompts carefully
Working input with unfamiliar glyphs does not necessarily mean the controller is broken. Prompts can vary with the physical controller type and the Steam Input state. First confirm that every face button, stick, trigger, and menu control responds; then choose the Steam Input state that presents the clearest prompts for your setup.

Steam Deck and SteamOS checks
SteamDB’s recorded Deck test marks ROLLA as Playable, with a fully functional default controller configuration, matching glyphs, good default-graphics performance, and SteamOS operation with Proton stable recommended. Start with the default configuration rather than importing a community layout.
- Use the recommended Proton stable configuration unless you are deliberately testing a different compatibility layer.
- Keep the default controller layout for the first launch.
- If input fails, disconnect external controllers and docks, restart ROLLA, and test the built-in controls alone.
- Verify files from the game’s Steam Properties if the Deck build will not launch.
- Reconnect one external device at a time if the built-in controls work.
The Playable label describes the tested Deck setup. It does not guarantee every dock, monitor, Bluetooth controller, custom layout, or Windows controller arrangement.
Back up the Windows save before any reset
SteamDB lists the Windows save file at %USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/Tyrmä Games/ROLLA/rolla_save.json. To protect progress, close ROLLA, paste that path into File Explorer, and copy rolla_save.json to a separate backup folder with the date in its name.

The path is documented, but deleting the file is not documented as a crash or black-screen fix. Treat a save reset as a last-resort experiment only after a backup and after restart, verification, overlay isolation, display testing, and controller isolation have failed. If removing the file changes the symptom, restore the backup to recover your progress and report the result through the game’s support channels.
Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid
- Assuming black means crashed: check audio, keyboard input, mouse movement, and the Steam overlay before force-closing the game.
- Changing several settings at once: a resolution change, overlay shutdown, and Steam Input switch in one launch provide no reliable diagnosis.
- Leaving extra devices connected: wheels, arcade sticks, second gamepads, and virtual XInput devices can change which input ROLLA receives.
- Confusing partial support with universal support: USB DualShock and DualSense entries do not certify every Bluetooth pad or remapper.
- Deleting the save too early: the documented path is a backup precaution, not proof that a reset repairs launch or display problems.
- Treating a community workaround as official: there is no confirmed ROLLA-specific crash signature, black-screen cause, or universal launch flag.
Choose the next test by failure stage and reversibility
| Situation | Next action | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|
| Crashes before any window | Restart Steam and the PC, then verify files | Documented Steam procedure |
| Black screen with audio or overlay response | Check focus, disable overlays, then test one display setting | Controlled diagnostic; no confirmed ROLLA-specific root cause |
| Menu ignores all input | Disconnect every other device and test the per-game Steam Input state | Steam controller isolation guidance |
| Wireless controller fails but wired works | Use the wired connection while isolating Bluetooth, receiver, and remapping variables | Practical diagnostic based on ROLLA’s USB metadata |
| Nothing changes after reversible tests | Back up the save, then contact Steam or ROLLA support with your failure stage and steps | Escalation; no guaranteed workaround established |
What to include when asking for support
- Whether the failure occurs before the first window, at a black screen, during a freeze, or at the menu.
- Your platform and whether you are using Windows, SteamOS, or Steam Deck.
- Controller connection type and every device or utility connected during the failure.
- Whether audio, keyboard input, mouse movement, or the Steam overlay still responds.
- Whether Steam restart, computer restart, file verification, overlay shutdown, and Steam Input changes were tested individually.
- The approximate date and time of the test and whether the problem is repeatable.
- Whether a wired USB controller changes the result compared with Bluetooth or wireless play.
- Whether the default Steam Deck configuration and Proton stable were used, if applicable.
This information lets support distinguish a launch failure from a rendering, focus, or input conflict without risking an unnecessary save reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does ROLLA crash immediately after I click Play?
Restart Steam, restart the computer, then use Steam Library > ROLLA > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Relaunch after each step. No universal ROLLA-specific crash flag has been confirmed.
Is there a confirmed fix for the ROLLA black screen?
No single official cause or guaranteed fix is established. First determine whether audio, keyboard input, or the Steam overlay still responds. Then restart, verify files, disable overlays and capture tools, and test one display mode or resolution at a time.
Does ROLLA support controllers?
Steam lists partial controller support, specifically USB DualShock and USB DualSense categories. That does not guarantee every Windows, Bluetooth, wireless, wheel, or remapping setup.
Should Steam Input be enabled or disabled for ROLLA?
Steam Input is configured per game, and the correct state can depend on the controller. Test a different available state in ROLLA’s Properties > Controller page, restart the game, and compare results with only one controller connected.

- USB Wired Gamepad (PS architecture) - Does not support the Xbox 360 / Xbox One / Mac OS
Why are my ROLLA button prompts wrong even though the controller works?
Prompts can change with the physical controller type and Steam Input state. Confirm that buttons, sticks, triggers, and menu controls respond, then test the per-game Steam Input options to find the clearest matching glyphs.
What should I do if ROLLA ignores my controller?
Exit the game, disconnect every other gamepad, wheel, joystick, arcade device, and virtual gamepad, close XInput emulators or remappers, connect only the intended controller, and relaunch. Reconnect devices one at a time if it works.
Is ROLLA verified on Steam Deck?
SteamDB’s test marks it Playable. The tested setup reports a fully functional default controller configuration, matching glyphs, good default-graphics performance, and SteamOS operation with Proton stable recommended. Custom docks, displays, layouts, and external controllers can still differ.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Where is the ROLLA save file on Windows?
SteamDB lists it at %USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/Tyrmä Games/ROLLA/rolla_save.json. Copy rolla_save.json to a separate folder before attempting any reset. Deleting it is not an established crash fix.
Would buying a wired controller fix ROLLA?
A wired USB PC controller can be a useful diagnostic because ROLLA’s metadata names USB DualShock and DualSense support. It removes Bluetooth, battery, receiver, and pairing variables, but no brand or model is guaranteed to fix a crash or input problem.
The Bottom Line
For ROLLA on Steam, use the reversible path first: identify the failure stage, restart Steam and the PC, verify the installed files, and change only one setting per launch. For black screens, check whether the process is still responding before treating it as a crash. For controller problems, isolate one device, test the per-game Steam Input state, and use a wired USB connection as a diagnostic when possible. Back up rolla_save.json before any reset, and report the exact platform, devices, and steps to Steam or ROLLA support if the documented procedures do not help.
