Most reSOT failures fall into one of four areas: the Windows executable cannot start, the recompilation cannot read a valid original-game data set, Windows is sending or processing audio incorrectly, or the graphics driver and display settings are incompatible. Start with the reversible checks, then verify your original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time files, and only afterward change drivers or replace data. reSOT is an in-progress Windows recompilation that requires files from your own original game copy, so a normal installation and a valid reSOT source dump are not automatically the same thing.
What reSOT is—and why the fix depends on the symptom
reSOT is described as a native Windows port/recompilation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The project rebuilds executable code but reads the original game’s art, audio, and level data from a copy supplied by the player. You therefore need both a compatible reSOT build and readable data from your own original game release. The project is still in progress; a 2026 RecompHub listing records 10 GitHub stars, and build behavior can change as development continues.
That architecture creates three different failure classes:

Keep the distinction in mind: a Steam verification can repair a Steam installation, but it cannot prove that a separately copied or dumped source directory contains every file reSOT expects.

Do these checks before changing the game
These steps are low-risk and reversible. They are adapted from general Windows and PC-game support guidance, not guarantees issued by the reSOT project.
- Record the failure. Note whether the launcher opens, whether a window appears, the exact error text, and the point at which the failure occurs. Take a screenshot if the message disappears.
- Confirm the build and source location. Make sure the executable and launcher belong to the same reSOT build. Keep the original-game source in a path you can read, and avoid moving or renaming files while diagnosing.
- Check the computer against the stated requirements. Use the requirements published for your reSOT build and the original game. If the machine is close to the minimum, plan to lower resolution and quality only after the program opens.
- Temporarily test security interference. Add the trusted reSOT folder and executable to your antivirus and firewall exclusions only if you obtained the files from a source you trust and understand the security exposure. Do not disable protection permanently or whitelist an unknown download.
- Try the appropriate administrator setting. Right-click the launcher and the game executable, choose Properties, open Compatibility, and use Run this program as an administrator for a test. If it makes no difference, turn the setting back off; elevated rights are not a universal fix.
- Update Windows and the GPU driver. Restart after updating. On a laptop or a desktop with integrated and discrete graphics, assign the executable to the high-performance GPU in Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Remove manually enabled compatibility mode. In the executable’s Properties → Compatibility tab, clear compatibility mode if you enabled it yourself. An old compatibility layer can interfere with a modern recompilation.
When reSOT will not launch
Separate a blocked executable from a bad data set
If Windows never creates a game window, begin with permissions, security software, GPU selection, and driver state. If a window opens and then reports missing data, skip to the file section instead of repeatedly reinstalling the executable. This separation prevents you from replacing valid source files to solve a Windows problem.
Check the launcher and executable as a pair
Use the same build for the launcher and game executable. Start each once from its normal folder rather than from a shortcut whose Start in directory may point elsewhere. If the launcher works but the game does not, inspect the target path in the shortcut and then launch the executable directly. Do not invent command-line flags: no official reSOT flag list was established, so an unverified option can create a second problem.

Test permissions without permanently weakening security
Windows security products can quarantine or block a newly compiled executable. Review the protection history and firewall prompts first. If you trust the build, create a narrow exclusion for its folder or executable, test once, and remove the exclusion if it has no effect. A successful launch after this test identifies an access-control conflict, not proof that every security warning was a false positive.

Use the correct GPU
On dual-GPU systems, Windows can start the program on an integrated adapter even when the machine has a faster discrete GPU. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the reSOT executable if necessary, choose Options, select High performance, save, and relaunch. Driver-control-panel names vary by manufacturer, so use the Windows assignment as the stable baseline.
Undo a manually forced compatibility mode
Right-click both the launcher and executable, choose Properties → Compatibility, clear Run this program in compatibility mode, apply, and try again. Keep administrator testing separate from compatibility testing so you know which change affected the result.
When the launch still fails
After Windows, security, GPU, and compatibility checks, capture the reSOT build or commit, Windows version, CPU, GPU and driver version, original-game release, source format, and the first visible error. That information distinguishes a reproducible project defect from a machine-specific setup issue.

Use an original, readable source copy
reSOT depends on the art, audio, and level data from your own original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time copy. Confirm that the source directory is complete, that Windows can open the files, and that the release matches one supported by your current reSOT build. The project listing does not provide a complete supported-build table or file-hash list, so do not assume that every regional, store, or patched release is interchangeable.

Keep a clean backup of the source. Work from a copy when experimenting, and do not “fix” a missing-file message by downloading individual game assets from an unrelated site. A partial replacement can mix releases and make later diagnosis harder.
Verify a Steam installation
- Open Steam and select the game in your Library.
- Open Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to compare the installation with its content manifest and download replacements for files that are missing or have different checksums.
This process repairs the Steam-managed installation. It does not establish that a separately dumped or copied source directory is in the format reSOT expects, and it does not validate a reSOT executable.
Check path and access issues
- Use a local drive with enough free space and read permission.
- Avoid placing the source in a location where cloud synchronization or removable-drive disconnections can change files while the game is running.
- Check that the account launching reSOT can read every source subfolder.
- If the error names one file, compare its spelling and extension with the original source; do not rename it unless the current reSOT documentation explicitly requires that name.
Know when the evidence is insufficient
If Steam verification succeeds but reSOT still reports missing data, the unresolved variable is usually the source format, release, or expected hash—not Steam’s download. Check the current official reSOT repository for the supported release and dump instructions before changing more files. Because those exact requirements are not published in the project listing described above, a successful verification alone cannot certify compatibility.
When reSOT has no sound or distorted audio
Route Windows audio to the intended device
- Open Settings → System → Sound and select the speakers or headphones you actually want to use.
- Check physical connections, hardware mute controls, and the device’s own volume.
- Open Volume mixer and verify that reSOT is not muted or assigned a different output.
- Set the intended device as the default output. This matters when HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, or a monitor is connected.
- Start another application to confirm whether Windows audio works outside reSOT.
If other applications are silent, fix Windows routing before investigating reSOT. If only reSOT is silent, continue with the game-specific checks below.

Turn off audio enhancements
In Settings → System → Sound, select the output device, open its properties, and set audio enhancements to Off (the exact label can vary by Windows version). Microsoft notes that enhancements can cause audio issues and that disabling them may resolve the problem. Test with enhancements off before changing sample rates or installing third-party audio utilities.
Update Windows, drivers, and audio services
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers, update the audio device driver, and restart.
- If the vendor driver behaves incorrectly, test the generic Windows audio driver or reinstall the current driver.
- Press
Win + R, enterservices.msc, and restart Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) if they are stopped or malfunctioning. RPC is a Windows dependency; do not disable it.
Interpret distortion separately from silence
Crackling or distortion that disappears when enhancements are disabled points toward Windows processing or the driver path. Distortion that follows the reSOT window to every output device, while other applications remain clean, is more consistent with a reSOT-specific issue. Record the exact build, Windows version, output device, and driver version rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. No confirmed reSOT audio backend or known distortion bug was established, so a reproducible report is more useful than an assumed fix.

Update or clean-install the GPU driver
Install the current driver for the selected GPU and restart. If a normal update does not help, use the driver’s clean-install option to replace corrupted components. Outdated graphics drivers can prevent games from starting or cause rendering problems; this is general PC-game guidance, not a reSOT-specific guarantee.
Regenerate shader caches
Close reSOT and delete its shader-cache files if the build creates them. Do not delete arbitrary game data or the original source. Relaunch and allow the cache to rebuild; the first start may take longer. A damaged shader cache is a known general cause of graphical issues, but the exact cache location is build-dependent, so use the folder documented for your current reSOT version rather than guessing.

Test display settings one at a time
Change one variable, relaunch, and record the result:

Do not change all four at once: you will lose the information needed to identify the cause. If flicker or a blank screen continues on both the integrated and discrete GPU after a clean driver installation, preserve the exact settings and capture a report rather than adding random launch options.
Decide whether the project or Windows is at fault

This comparison is a troubleshooting aid, not a diagnosis. A project defect and a platform conflict can coexist—for example, an unsupported source release can stop loading while an outdated driver causes a separate black screen.

What to include when you report an unresolved problem
A useful report lets a maintainer reproduce the first failure instead of guessing which file or setting changed. Include:
- reSOT version, build number, or commit;
- the original-game release and how its source was obtained and copied;
- the exact missing-file message or crash text;
- Windows edition and version;
- CPU, GPU, GPU driver version, and whether integrated or discrete graphics was selected;
- audio device and audio-driver version for sound reports;
- display resolution, window/full-screen state, HDR state, and quality settings for graphics reports;
- the first visible failure, what you changed, and whether the change was reversible;
- a crash log or Windows Event Viewer entry when one exists.
Check the current official reSOT repository for its issue tracker and supported-source instructions before filing, because the supported hash list and exact tracker location can change with the project.
