Start with eligibility: Resident Evil Requiem requires 64-bit Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, a discrete graphics card around the GTX 1660 6GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB level, and an SSD. If the game is on a hard disk, move it to a suitable SSD before treating the symptom as a software bug. Then work through Windows and GPU updates, security exclusions, file verification, shader-cache cleanup, overlay removal, and finally a clean driver reinstall.
The sequence below separates launch failures from in-game crashes and stutter. It also explains when a D3D error points to the graphics stack, which laptop and integrated-graphics configurations are outside Capcom’s guarantee, and what evidence to collect if support is necessary.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Note exactly when the problem occurs. A game that never opens has a different first suspect from one that reaches the menu and crashes after ten minutes. Write down the error text, the location or scene, whether the problem happens every time, and whether restarting Windows changes it.
Recommended Free Tools
| Symptom | Most useful first checks | Evidence to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Launcher or game does not open | Windows 11 eligibility, SSD installation, antivirus/firewall exclusions, updates, compatibility mode | Any security alert, launcher message, and whether running as administrator changes the result |
| re9.exe crashes at startup or in a repeatable scene | Verify files, remove overlays, clear shader cache, update or clean-install the GPU driver | Exact location, reproduction steps, screenshots, and the newest CrashReport ZIP |
| D3D, DirectX, or driver error | DirectX 12 support, current GPU driver, clean driver reinstall, Windows updates | Full error text, GPU model, VRAM amount, driver version, and display configuration |
| Stutter or sudden frame-rate drops | Compare hardware with the targets, reduce graphics load, check shader cache, overlays, power, and ventilation | Whether drops occur during a particular effect or only after prolonged play |
Do not change several variables at once if you are trying to find a cause. Apply one stage, restart the game, and record whether the symptom changes.

Check that the PC is eligible
Steam’s 2026 listing gives the following baseline. The minimum figures describe a 1080p image rendered with upscaling at 30 frames per second; Steam warns that frame rate can fall when processing load is high. The recommended figures target 1080p with upscaling at 60 fps.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11, 64-bit | Windows 11, 64-bit |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Graphics card | GeForce GTX 1660 with 6 GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT with 8 GB | GeForce RTX 2060 Super with 8 GB or Radeon RX 6600 with 8 GB |

How to check your configuration
- Press Windows+R, enter
dxdiag, and check the operating-system and DirectX information. - Open Task Manager > Performance to see installed memory, GPU model, and GPU memory. A graphics card that borrows system RAM is not equivalent to a card with the stated dedicated VRAM.
- In File Explorer, right-click the drive containing the game, choose Properties, and confirm that it is an SSD rather than an HDD.
- Compare the exact GPU model, not just a family name. A laptop version can perform substantially below a desktop card with a similar label.
Why an SSD matters
An SSD is a stated requirement, not merely a performance suggestion. If Requiem is installed on a hard disk, use the launcher to move it to an SSD with adequate free space. For a system that needs additional storage, 1TB NVMe SSD is a practical search phrase, but confirm that the motherboard or laptop supports the required M.2 size, interface, and physical keying. Moving to an SSD can address streaming-related pauses and loading problems; it cannot guarantee that every crash will disappear.
Hardware Capcom does not guarantee
Capcom says onboard graphics and devices that share video memory with main memory are not guaranteed. Many mobile GPUs are also outside the same performance expectation as their desktop counterparts, even when the model numbers appear similar. If the computer is below the published minimum, Capcom does not warrant or officially support technical operation on that configuration.

Fix a launch failure caused by security software
Capcom reports that antivirus or firewall false positives can prevent the executable from launching and can also cause frame-rate drops. Security software may quarantine a file, block a child process, or restrict the launcher while leaving no obvious in-game message.
- Open your antivirus and firewall management screens.
- Add the Resident Evil Requiem game executable, the launcher executable, and the launcher AppData folder to the allowed or excluded items list.
- If those items were already listed, remove the old entries and add them again. A stale path, changed executable signature, or incomplete update can make an existing exclusion ineffective.
- Restart Windows and try the game normally.
Only for diagnosis, right-click the launcher and the game executable, open Properties > Compatibility, and test Run this program as an administrator. Administrator mode should not be treated as a permanent fix if it weakens normal account protections. If it changes the result, check folder permissions and security logs instead of leaving every launch elevated.
Update Windows and the graphics stack
Install ordinary updates first
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates, including optional driver updates only when they are appropriate for your hardware.
- Install the current driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer for your exact desktop or laptop model.
- Restart Windows, even if the installer does not insist on a reboot.
A D3D or driver error after a major game update can result from an incomplete driver installation, an old shader compiler, or a Windows component that has not been updated. Rebooting also releases files that an installer may have left locked.

Perform a clean driver reinstall when normal updating fails
Use this escalation when the current driver is already installed but crashes continue, or when the problem began immediately after a driver change. Capcom’s detailed procedure is:
- Download the latest driver for the exact GPU from its original manufacturer before removing the existing one.
- Download and run Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) according to its documentation. DDU removes the existing display-driver package and its remnants; use it carefully and follow its prompts.
- Restart Windows when DDU finishes.
- Install the latest OEM graphics driver, choosing the clean-install option when the installer offers one.
- Restart Windows again.
- Run the latest DirectX installer, then restart once more.
Do not interrupt the display while the driver is being removed or installed. Laptop owners should use the driver package that supports the laptop’s graphics switching and manufacturer firmware, rather than assuming a desktop package is interchangeable.
Repair damaged files and remove software conflicts
Verify the installed files
In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam will compare the local installation and redownload missing or damaged data. Let the process finish before launching; repeatedly starting the game during verification can leave the diagnosis unclear.

Close overlays and resource-heavy programs
Temporarily disable overlays and recording features from the game launcher, chat clients, GPU utilities, capture software, and monitoring tools. Close browsers with many tabs and any application that consumes substantial CPU, memory, disk, or GPU time. A clean test should leave only the launcher, the game, and essential Windows services running.
If the crash stops, re-enable programs one at a time. That identifies the conflicting hook instead of forcing you to leave every useful utility disabled.

Delete the shader cache
Shader compilation data can become stale after a game or driver update. Delete the game’s shader-cache files using the cache location supplied by the launcher or Capcom’s support instructions, then start the game and allow shaders to rebuild. The first run after clearing the cache can stutter while compilation occurs; judge stability after that initial rebuild rather than during it.

Turn off compatibility mode
Right-click re9.exe and the launcher, choose Properties > Compatibility, and clear any compatibility-mode selection. A setting left over from another game or an older Windows version can interfere with DirectX initialization and permissions.
Reduce stuttering and frame-time spikes
If the PC is close to the minimum rather than the recommended specification, aim for consistent frame times instead of maximum image quality. Start with the game’s own graphics preset, then make controlled changes.
- Use the recommended upscaled 1080p target as a reference. If the minimum-class GPU cannot sustain 30 fps, lower the render resolution or upscaling quality before raising other settings.
- Check display mode and test exclusive fullscreen, borderless, or windowed mode as appropriate for the monitor.
- Test HDR off and on. A display or driver path that mishandles HDR can produce instability even when ordinary rendering works.
- Test vertical synchronization off and on. Keep the setting that produces stable frame pacing on your monitor.
- Lower the settings that increase processing load, then retest the same scene. Steam specifically warns that frame rate may drop when processing load is high.
- Keep the computer ventilated. Check that fans and vents are clear and that temperatures are not forcing the CPU or GPU to throttle.
- On a laptop, connect the compatible AC adapter and select the manufacturer’s performance power profile. Battery or an incompatible adapter can impose a lower power limit.
Do not interpret a brief shader-compilation hitch as proof that the final settings are unusable. Conversely, repeated pauses accompanied by disk activity can indicate an HDD installation or insufficient system resources, both of which should be addressed before fine-tuning visual options.

D3D or DirectX initialization failure
- Confirm that Windows 11 64-bit and DirectX 12 are available.
- Update Windows and the GPU driver, reboot, and run the latest DirectX installer.
- Perform the clean DDU procedure if the error survives an ordinary update.
- Disable overlays and compatibility mode, then verify the files.
- Check that the selected GPU is the discrete adapter rather than integrated graphics, especially on a laptop.
Crash after reaching the menu or entering one area
- Verify files and clear the shader cache.
- Reproduce the same location with overlays and recording tools disabled.
- Lower graphics load and test HDR, V-Sync, display mode, and resolution individually.
- Record whether restarting Windows temporarily changes the result; that distinction helps separate a resource leak or driver state from a deterministic file or scene problem.
Intermittent crash with no message
Check security-software logs, re-add the three Capcom-recommended exclusions, close background applications, and monitor temperatures and power. Intermittent failures are harder to diagnose when several overlays or hardware-monitoring tools are active, so test with a minimal background environment.
Prepare a useful Capcom support report
If the sequence does not resolve the issue, avoid sending only “the game crashes.” Capcom requests enough detail to reproduce the failure and correlate it with a driver or hardware configuration.
- CPU model.
- Desktop or laptop model.
- GPU model and dedicated VRAM amount.
- Graphics-driver version.
- Total system memory.
- Windows edition and version.
- Security software installed and whether exclusions were tested.
- Connected display models.
- Your region.
- The game’s
config.inifile. - The exact symptom, error text, and the location where it occurs.
- Numbered reproduction steps, including whether restarting changes the behavior.
- Screenshots or video when available.
- The newest ZIP file in the
CrashReportfolder generated after a crash.
Preserve the newest CrashReport ZIP rather than an older archive created before the latest test. Include the driver and Windows versions from the same session in which the crash occurred. This gives support a reproducible state instead of a list of changes made at different times.
