First find out whether the buffering affects one viewer or many. If it is just one person, check that viewer’s connection, playback quality, app or browser, and device. If viewers on unrelated connections report the same interruptions, investigate the broadcaster’s encoder and upload path. YouTube identifies widespread reports across different connections as a possible encoder problem.
Use the checks below in that order. A viewer’s download connection and the broadcaster’s outbound upload connection are separate paths, so changing settings or buying equipment before identifying the affected side may not help.
1. Find out who is affected
Ask whether buffering happens for one viewer, several viewers using the same network, or viewers on different networks. YouTube’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream guidance says reports from viewers on different internet connections may point to an encoder problem.
- One viewer: Begin with that person’s playback connection, quality setting, app or browser, and device.
- Several viewers on one network: Check whether that network or its devices are the shared factor; compare playback on a different connection if practical.
- Viewers on unrelated networks: The operator should inspect stream health, encoder output, and outbound connectivity.
2. If you are watching the stream
Change one thing at a time and replay the stream. That makes it easier to tell whether a particular check helped.

Try another connection and lower playback quality
- Switch to another available internet connection, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, if practical.
- In the YouTube player, open the playback quality controls and select a lower quality manually. If buffering stops, the current connection or playback conditions may not be sustaining the higher quality.
YouTube’s computer troubleshooting page lists 7 Mbps as the minimum recommended connection speed for HD streaming. The page does not state a publication year. This is a general recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted live playback: congestion, live-stream delay, and device conditions can still matter. Refresh the app, browser, or device
- In the YouTube app, clear the app cache, reopen YouTube, and try the stream again.
- Restart the app or device. Install available device system updates.
- On a computer, update the browser, close excess tabs, and retry. YouTube lists Chrome as one troubleshooting option.
Check Wi-Fi conditions before buying equipment
If Wi-Fi seems weak, move closer to the router and reduce nearby interference or competing network use, then retry. YouTube’s viewer guidance starts with these checks; it does not establish that buying a router, mesh system, or cable will solve a particular viewer’s buffering. 3. If you operate the study-room stream
Check what the encoder sends before changing the audience’s playback settings. The operator’s upload path delivers the broadcast to YouTube; each viewer’s download path carries YouTube playback to that person.
Inspect Live Control Room and encoder output
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health, including timestamped error messages. YouTube explains live metrics in See your live stream’s metrics – Computer and describes error messages in Live streaming error messages.
- Check the encoder’s own preview or output. If video or sound is already degraded there, inspect source routing and encoder errors, check CPU load, and review the local archive file.
- Update the encoder software and retest. If encoder output looks and sounds healthy, investigate the outbound internet connection; YouTube notes that a healthy-looking stream may still have an outbound connection issue. If tests indicate a problem, ask the ISP to investigate it.
A local archive can help establish whether the recording itself is affected before it reaches YouTube. Test the channel’s watch page as well as a mobile device, so you are not relying on a single playback setup.

Match output quality to the upload connection
Choose an encoder quality that the available connection can reliably sustain, then test before going live and monitor stream health while broadcasting. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Those are encoder settings, not household internet speed recommendations. The page’s bitrate table varies by resolution and frame rate; for example, it lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. Use the relevant row for the actual output format rather than treating that example as a universal setting. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check keyframes and latency
YouTube’s live error guidance says keyframes not being sent often enough can cause buffering. Confirm the encoder’s keyframe interval is set appropriately; YouTube’s general recommendation is two seconds and no more than four. Don’t assume latency is the cause: YouTube warns that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” For a quiet study room that does not need immediate audience interaction, test normal latency and compare stream health and viewer reports. Test failover without disrupting a live session
If the setup uses a backup encoder, YouTube’s live-stream tips describe testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Treat that as a planned test, not an action to take during ordinary production. See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

For viewers, try connection, quality, cache, software, and router-position checks first. For operators, inspect stream health, encoder output, CPU load, archive, upload stability, quality settings, keyframes, and latency. A wired Ethernet test may be useful for the broadcaster if diagnostics point to an unstable Wi-Fi upload path; it is not a universal fix for viewers or every stream. YouTube’s guidance does not specify a cable category, brand, or guaranteed improvement.
