Most PC problems in Red Dead Redemption 2 fall into a small number of causes: an unavailable Rockstar service or blocked connection, an outdated graphics driver, damaged game files, incompatible graphics settings, or a corrupted Rockstar Games Launcher. Work through the symptom-specific path below rather than changing every setting at once. Start with service status and network checks, then update Windows and your GPU driver, verify the installation through the storefront that owns the game, and only then reset graphics files or reinstall the launcher.
These steps apply to copies activated through the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The exact verification button differs by storefront, while graphics and launcher repairs are performed in Windows.
Start with the failure you actually see
Use the message or behavior on screen to choose the shortest route. A crash that occurs before the main menu needs a different fix from a download that stops during content verification.

Check service availability and remove connection blockers
Before changing files, open the Rockstar Games Service Status page and look for an outage affecting authentication, downloads, or online services. If the launcher says Rockstar services cannot be reached, disconnect any VPN and clear or disable proxy settings in Windows. Rockstar identifies error 0x99380000 as a connectivity problem that prevents downloading or verifying user-generated content, so a local reinstall will not repair an unavailable service.

Test the connection without adding variables
- Close the game and launcher.
- Turn off a VPN and any manually configured proxy, then retry the launcher.
- If the error is limited to online entitlement or Red Dead Online, test from a wired connection when possible.
- Only after the service is operating normally should you continue with file verification or graphics changes.
Do not treat DNS changes, port forwarding, or an Ethernet cable as universal crash fixes. Rockstar presents those measures for connection-specific failures, not for every launch or graphics error.
Apply the baseline PC fixes
Install current Windows updates and the latest driver for your graphics processor before diagnosing a game-specific crash. Rockstar describes an outdated video driver as the most common cause of the “Red Dead Redemption 2 Exited Unexpectedly” launch error. Close overlays, recording utilities, and other programs that hook into games while testing; they can change the result between attempts.
Use administrator mode for a controlled test
- Browse to the folder containing
RDR2.exe. - Right-click
RDR2.exeand choose Properties. - Open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Run this program as an administrator and Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Select Apply, then OK, and launch the game again.
These compatibility settings are especially relevant when the game exits during startup. They are also a useful secondary test for graphics initialization errors, but do not replace the driver and API steps for those errors.

Avoid a slow external-drive installation while troubleshooting
Rockstar’s general PC guidance advises avoiding slow external-drive installs. If the game is installed on a slow external drive, move or reinstall it to a reliable internal drive before drawing conclusions from repeated verification or launch attempts. Keep the launcher and game closed while moving files.
Verify the game files through the correct storefront
Damaged or incomplete files can cause crashes, failed updates, and launcher verification loops. Rockstar says that verifying integrity can resolve several kinds of issues and confirms that the game and supporting files are up to date.

Rockstar Games Launcher copy
- Open the Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open Settings.
- Under My installed games, select Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Choose Verify Integrity.
- Wait for the completion notice before launching the game or closing the launcher.
Verification may download replacements for files that are missing or different. Let the process finish even if the progress indicator appears unchanged for a while.
Steam or Epic Games Store copy
For a Steam or Epic installation, use that platform’s own game-file verification control first. The platform owns the installation record, while the Rockstar Games Launcher may still open for authentication. Running verification in the wrong client can leave the damaged files untouched.

Fix “Red Dead Redemption 2 Exited Unexpectedly”
This launch message is most often associated with an outdated video driver, according to Rockstar. Install the current driver supplied for your GPU, restart the launcher, and perform the administrator/fullscreen-optimization test described above. If the game then starts, leave the compatibility settings enabled while you test a normal session.
If the driver update does not help
- Close the game and Rockstar Games Launcher completely.
- Open
RDR2.exeproperties and confirm both compatibility options are enabled. - Disable overlays and recording tools for the next launch.
- Launch from the storefront that owns the installation.
- If the same message returns, verify the game files before changing graphics settings.
Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to know which repair worked. Perform one launch test after each group of changes.
Resolve ERR_GFX_STATE
ERR_GFX_STATE points to a graphics-state initialization problem. Rockstar’s specific remedy is to use DirectX 12 rather than the current API, then relaunch from a clean menu state.

- Start the game far enough to open Settings and Advanced Graphics.
- Set Graphics API to DirectX 12.
- Save the setting. If the game asks whether to restart immediately, choose the option that saves without restarting when prompted.
- Exit back to the main menu.
- Close and relaunch the game so the new API is initialized.
If the error continues, apply Run this program as an administrator and Disable fullscreen optimizations to RDR2.exe through Properties → Compatibility. Verify the files before attempting repeated API changes.

Resolve ERR_GFX_INIT by rebuilding graphics settings and caches
ERR_GFX_INIT requires a more thorough reset than ERR_GFX_STATE. Update the GPU driver first, then close both the game and launcher so that settings files are not locked.
Reset the settings files
- Close Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Open the game’s settings folder and identify
system.xml. - Delete the other settings files in that folder, leaving
system.xmlin place. - Open
system.xmlin a text editor and change the graphics API entry from Vulkan to DirectX 12, or from DirectX 12 to Vulkan. - Save the file, close the editor, and launch the game.
Switching between Vulkan and DirectX 12 is a diagnostic step; use only one API for each test. If the game starts, change additional graphics options gradually rather than restoring a complete old settings set.
Rebuild the shader and pipeline cache
- Close the game and launcher again.
- In the same settings location, delete files whose names begin with
sga_. - Launch the game and allow it to recreate the shader/pipeline cache.
The first launch after deleting sga_ files can take longer while the cache is rebuilt. Do not interrupt that rebuild. If the error remains after the driver, API, settings, and cache steps, verify the installation and then move to launcher troubleshooting.
Repair a Rockstar Games Launcher that will not initialize
A launcher failure can block activation, downloads, verification, and game startup even when the game files are healthy. Rockstar warns that a corrupt launcher can cause crashes or prevent contact with its services, including game activation services.

Separate service downtime from local corruption
- Check Rockstar Games Service Status.
- Remove VPN and proxy settings and retry the launcher.
- Confirm that Windows is current and that the launcher is not being blocked by an overlay or recording utility.
- Try the launcher’s file verification for the game if the launcher opens far enough to show Settings.
Reinstall the current launcher
If the launcher still will not initialize or repeatedly crashes, reinstall the current Rockstar Games Launcher. Rockstar release notes record fixes for launcher initialization, preload decryption, unexpected exits, Epic startup crashes, and the message “Unable to launch game, please verify your game data.” A launcher reinstall addresses the launcher component; it does not substitute for verifying the game files through Steam or Epic when those clients own the installation.
After reinstalling, sign in with the account that purchased or activated the game. If the launcher opens but the game is missing, treat that as an entitlement or account-selection problem rather than immediately reinstalling the entire game.

A download that stops, loops, or fails while verifying content can result from service availability, a blocked connection, or incomplete local files. Start with the service-status and VPN/proxy checks, then verify the installation through the correct storefront.
Error 0x99380000
Rockstar associates 0x99380000 with connectivity that prevents downloading or verifying user-generated content. Remove VPN or proxy settings, test again when services are operational, and use a stable connection. If the launcher still reports damaged content after connectivity is restored, run Verify Integrity in Rockstar Games Launcher or the verification control in Steam or Epic, depending on where you bought the game.
When an external drive is involved
Slow external-drive installations can make downloads and verification appear stalled. Rockstar’s basic PC guidance recommends avoiding them. Use a reliable internal drive for the installation or move the game before repeating verification.

Fix “not entitled,” ToS, and failed entitlement checks
Entitlement errors mean the service cannot confirm that the signed-in account may use the game or online content. They are different from a graphics crash: changing Vulkan, DirectX 12, or fullscreen settings will not restore an entitlement.
- Check Rockstar Games Service Status for an authentication or entitlement incident.
- Sign out and back in with the account that actually owns Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Confirm that the storefront account and Rockstar account are the linked accounts used for the purchase.
- Test a wired connection if available.
- Try DNS changes only if the failure is clearly connection-specific and persists after service status is normal.
- For Red Dead Online, review the required UDP ports below with the network administrator or router documentation.

Rockstar Games Customer Support listed these targets in 2024 for entitlement troubleshooting:

These numbers are not a guarantee that every account or network will connect, and opening ports is not a general remedy for single-player crashes. If you do not control the router, ask its administrator to review the listed UDP traffic rather than changing unrelated firewall rules.
Choose the right intervention for your storefront
The storefront changes where you verify files, but it does not change the order of diagnosis. Use the least disruptive intervention that matches the symptom.

Collect the log and contact support
If the same failure survives service checks, driver updates, verification, graphics resets, and a launcher reinstall, stop repeating the same steps and provide a log. The newest launcher log is stored at Documents\Rockstar Games\Launcher\launcher.log.
- Close the game and launcher after reproducing the error once.
- Open
Documents\Rockstar Games\Launcher\launcher.log. - Attach the newest copy to a Rockstar Support request.
- Include the exact on-screen message, the storefront used, whether the failure occurs before or after the main menu, and which intervention last changed the behavior.
